What areas are best to move to in Rapid City SD?

I am planning on moving my family with 4 children to the Rapid City area to attend the School of Mines. We are looking at rentals in the area and want to take into account the quality of the area we move to. Every place has its good and its bad sides, we are aware that there is a gang presence in the city and we are aren't interested in living anywhere where that activity is concentrated. Looking for a nice middle class area where the kids can ride their bikes down the street and make friends in the neighborhood any ideas? What schools are the best in the area? What areas would you recommend and which would you warn against?

Answer
Questions about Rapid City are always welcome! I try to keep an eye out for them. ;)

I answered a similar question awhile back so forgive me for copy/pasting my neighborhood information:

Here is a general breakdown of the parts of Rapid City. I left out downtown as it is mostly just very small apartments and not really suitable for family living. Also, anywhere outside of the city limits and into the country is going to provide you with a more "open" feeling, and there isn't a general "good and bad neighborhood" rule there. (Feel free to open Google Maps and follow along.)

West Side - The West Side is referred to as anything west of Mt Rushmore Rd (also called 8th street). This tends to be referred to as one of the nicer sides of town and usually holds middle class to upper middle class residents. There aren't really any areas here that I personally wouldn't feel comfortable raising a family in.

Along Sheridan Lake Rd are some of the newer houses. These are really nice/family friendly neighborhoods. The further along you drive down Sheridan Lake Rd, the more expensive the houses get. Red Rock Subdivision is located about 10 minutes out of city limits and contains some huge houses that are home to upper class residents. This area is beautiful.

South Rapid - Also known as "Robinsdale Area" to some. It is basically anything South of E St Patrick Street. This is usually home to middle class residents but there are some upper middle class that live here as well. My dad lived on this side of town, and when I was growing up I never felt unsafe here. The houses between E Fairmont Blvd and E Minnesota St are probably the nicest on this side. Between E Fairmont Blvd and E St Patrick St you will find that these houses tend to be smaller.

North Rapid - North Rapid is basically anything north of Omaha Street. I honestly do not recommend living the areas between Omaha and I-90 nor the areas directly west of Lowes and Best Buy. These places are usually home to the lower income residents of the area and there tends to be higher crime rates here. The houses are also very small and often poorly maintained. Now, N Haines Ave (North of Lowes and Best Buy), has some nice houses. This area is newly developed and are nice neighborhoods consisting of about middle class to upper middle class residents.

Rapid Valley - This area is hard to give a recommendation too, and I even live in this area. It's a mix of old and new houses and nice and not-so-nice neighborhoods. Basically all the "newer" areas around Reservoir Rd and Twilight Dr are nice neighborhoods. However there are some streets that look less than lovely. Thankfully, the good and bad areas can pretty much be determined by just driving down the street here.

As far as schools go, Stevens High School is generally the school that is regarded as higher class. The classroom sizes are smaller, allowing for more individual attention. Central High School is currently a bit over crowded, but is getting an extension. I went to Stevens and loved it, but also had friends who went to Central and had no complaints. Both schools have a lot of security for the safety of the students. (Also, a side note that the elementary and middle schools often are determined by where you ultimately decide to live.)

I wish you guys the best of luck in finding a good rental home! :)

How can you loose weight in the section under your belly?

yopude

Usually when you have kids, some women get fat just underneath the belly. What can you do to get rid of that other than surgery?

Answer
When we want to get rid of body fat, there is no way to specifically burn fat from one part of the body. Doing situps won't burn the fat that is covering your abs and doing tricep extensions won't get rid of the fat that is covering your triceps. The only thing you can do is lose weight all around and eventually the problem area will also improve. The way to burn fat is through a calorie restricted diet in conjunction with an exercise routine that will burn calories. Activities that burn calories include running, biking, swimming and other high intensity activities.

I've been looking around, and there doesn't seem to be a rain cover for my kid's bike seat, so the kid is going to get soaked next time it rains and we're out for a bike ride.

Its been suggested to get a trailer which will be under cover, but that's not really an option since I can't get through the gates near where we live with a trailer behind my bike.

Answer
I don't think one exists but how about the old school rain poncho that the kid can wear and it will also drape right over the seat. If you can't find one small enough then maybe modify one to fit. Good Luck.

Answer
you are in bicycle heaven in the bay area so maybe you should ask a bunch of people in the bike industry to see what they could do for you. maybe make a flyer and pass it around to the bike shops. talk to the managers and the shop workers. my husband was a messenger and a bike mechanic for years and the bike community is close i'm sure they could help you out in some way.

try handing out flyers at a critical mass or a turkey day ride. they have a huge one in sacramento. try bike co-ops and maybe infiltrating a century ride. lots of people with a lot of pull do those.

I'm 16 now and ever since I was a little kid, I've loved racing. I remember watching NASCAR races and dreaming about how amazing it would to be like Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart. I would always ask my parents but they didn't have a clue on how to get me started. Well I'm still dreaming and I really want a chance to race. Does anyone know how I can make it possible?

Answer
Yea do what grizzly boy says. He knows much more than anyone else about everything. He's a racer a street bike pro & a quad mechanic. He knows where every bolt & nut on every machine was made. He's so much cooler on-line. Btw... Don't have an opinion about anything at all because it's wrong. If cub bear boy doesn't agree then it can't be right.

How to build a wagon to pull with a quad?

Q. i need to build a wagon, have very limited resources, old lawnmower, i can take axels off of and tires, any ideas for a hitch as well?
i have 4 front lawnmower tires and axels

i want to BUILD it not BUY it

I desperatly need a hitch idea

Answer
The tires from a lawn mower will leave you with little clearance. The front tires from a coupe of BMX type kids bikes would work better. Just bolt the tires to the sides of your box about 1/3 of the distance from the back.

For the hitch a Pintle Hook type is the simplest to make with a basic hook and ring setup.

Add:
Find or bend two pieces of iron. One needs to look like a question mark that is almost a complete ring and having some way to connect to the quad with the opening facing up. An eye bolt with a cut in the eye about 45degs away from the bolt would work also. You then need a complete ring to attach to the cart in a horizontal position to drop in to the hook. Add a cut section of pipe to cover the opening in the hook so the trailer canât pop out when braking.

What is the most comfortable mountain bike seat for a woman with a big bottom?

kids bike seat parts image

Myra G

I just bought a seat that looks comfortable but is not. Any suggestions???
yes, it has been a while since I have used a bike.

Answer
Hi Myra,

First let's get some basic terms squared away. Bike seats are called "saddles"... For the most part "seats" are found in bleachers, office buildings and in cars.

I have been an active cyclist since 1985, currently logging 200-250 miles per week... Now it is true that I am not a woman, nor do I have a wide bottom, but I can help you out a bit. Saddles are now being made women-specific. Most of these are narrower models, but as someone else pointed out, women naturally have a wider pelvic region (the whole birthing thing), so they will be shaped differently from a male saddle. If you went to a decent bike shop, you would see saddles with sections that look like they are missing, cut out or perhaps the maker forgot to finish building it. That however is the way they are suppose to look. The cut out region is to alleviate pressure on your pelvic region - and to weight weenies (what they call people who count every gram of every part that goes on their bikes) it is cool because that saddle will weigh less than solid ones.

If you weren't completely sold on a mountain bike, I would recommend a recumbent for true comfort while riding.. Those are the bikes that you sit in a very wide chair-like "seat", with your legs extended out to the pedals in front of you. Riding a recumbent would work certain muscle groups harder than a regular bike would. Your gluts (butt muscles) would be worked (abused - LOL) hard along with your leg muscles of course. The saddle on a recumbent is light-years more comfortable than a standard bike.

If you are already sold on the mountain bike idea, or perhaps you have one and saddle discomfort has become the principal issue at hand, then first thing I would recommend is to look at Performancebike.com. Click on the SADDLES link on the left. Then select WOMEN'S SADDLES. You will see a very wide shaped saddle there for sale for $39.99 (12% off) called "The Seat" by Ergo. It probably doesn't look anything like any saddle you have ever seen (and yes it is ok to call this one a SEAT! It is advertised as:

"Extra wide for unbelievable support and comfort"

"Short length provides a non-restrictive pedal stroke"

"Integrated rear reflectors for added visibility"

"Gel padding dissipates road vibration while providing plenty of padding for comfort"

Keep in mind that "The Seat" is a saddle that supports your body the same way as when you sit in a chair.

Shoot that almost sounds good enough for me! If it could recline and give me a massage I would be set! LOL! Just kidding of course.

Another thing to keep in mind that if you are riding a department store bicycle, you really should get properly fit on your bike. It sounds like you have a passion that makes you want to ride, but the dang pain in the butt part (sorry) has discomforted you and irked you enough to have you post a question here. A reliable bike shop can help you "Saddle Up" properly. They can tell if your saddle is too high or too far back. They can help if your crank arms are too long, or if the distance to your handlebar is too far away, too low or too high. All of the stated issues above can contribute to a sore backside.

Also on the Performance website you can see the Forté EasyRider Saddle. For the Forte EasyRider follow this link:

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=14747&PID=1204522

It too is on sale $19.99 (50% off the regular price)

You can also check out another famous online cycling catalog @ NASHBAR.COM for the following saddles:

Selle San Marco Travel Delux Womenâs Saddle

Selle Royal Ergo GEL Mid Cruiser Saddle

A little more insight can be found at: about.com (See below)

http://bicycling.about.com/od/equipment/a/saddlechoice.htm

If I can help further in any aspect of the sport please don't hesitate to contact me... HOW? Just answer any of the questions that "I ask" with the answer "BIKE HELP NEEDED" and I will do my best to get you the answers you seek.

Can I use a rear mounted bike seat (for baby) with a 3 wheel bike?

girlsun69

I want to use a 3 wheel bike when riding with my baby, but I can't find any info on using an adult trike with either a baby trailer or a rear mounted seat. Having the third wheel seems like it would provide the extra stability to make a bike mounted seat safer, but I'm not sure if it's possible to properly and safely attach one to the frame of a three wheel bike? Or if I decide to use a trailer, would that attach to the frame of my bike successfully? Any info or experiences with this are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
There are a range of different bike mounted kids seats. There are also a heap of different styles of trailers. There will be some that will fit easy and ones that will need to be modified. The style of trike will determine which will fit best.

Most upright adult trikes have a large wire basket mounted between the back wheels. If this is removed it leaves plenty of potential mounting points. to securely mount one or more child seats. Of course caution needs to be observed to make sure that all moving parts are well shielded from little fingers and feet. I've seen three mounted across the back of a trike. (fitted with a custom made frame). I've also seen infant car seats mounted.

The best trailer option I can think of of the top of my head would be this style. They usually mount on a bike's rear axle, but there will be plenty of options at the back of a trike to securely mount these.
http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDetails.asp?productID=7572
http://www.actionbent.com/twtrailer.html

There are others that mount off the seat post that should work also. The most common trailers clamp onto the left chain stay, they won't be any good on a trike.(with out major rework)

Yeah; there are plenty of options. You should be able to get something pretty much "off the shelf". An extra dollar or two on different mounting clamps might be necessary. Or you could go to town and do something totally original.

Answer
--Have each of the *dozen* richest nations contribute 5% of their combined economic wealth, so that basic food, clean water, clothing, shelter, literacy, and healthcare could be provided for free to every man, woman and child living on the planet.

Yes, it's doable. Yes, the difference in wealth between the richest twelve nations and the rest of the world is *that great*.

--Come up with decisive proof, once and for all, that fundamentalist fanaticism really *is* a mental illness, and not just a faith. Really, if we can only get the worst, most antisocial and destructive 5% of the world's religions--yes, *ALL* of them--under some control, we'd all be a lot better off. Yes, *ALL* of us. Did you know Malaysia has freedom of religion, yes, in spite of being an Islamic republic? Point is, it's about the fundies and whackjobs....not about the quiet faithful who are given a bad name by the nutjobs day in and out.

--Find a cure for post-traumatic stress....not just for the soldiers, but for the women who survive rape and abusive husbands, and for the *kids* who survive trauma only to be too fragile to have their own lives as women and men....Keyword: CURE it. Finish it. Don't just bury it under pills and paperwork, actually solve the problem. Same for depression too...

--Create a simple motor scooter or motorized bicycle....that runs on a fuel that *Pulls* carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. That actually reduces global warming instead of increasing it. It's not chemically impossible....

Consider that people suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning in part because CO chemically bonds to hemoglobin better than straight oxygen--O2--does. That's what the fuel needs to do, it needs to have a molecular form that *bonds with* CO and CO2 more easily than it does to oxygen...it needs to do that, and then produce enough energy to run a motor scooter.

Then offer the scooters *for free* to End Users. There are ways to do this too. ^__^ It's all about sponsorship.

But yeah, that's what I'd do, or at least try to do.

Thanks for your time, and have a star! ^__^

Where in Malaysia can i rent a supermarket for one night only?

Racing with bicycle on the road outdoors has been so boring. Racing indoors is really fun. I've done it before in some big houses. Overtaking bikes is a challenge indoors. On the streets, you just need to be more physically fit and make more speed. In indoors, It's like F1 drivers trying to find a way to get through the car ahead of them.

Any supermarkets would allow me to do this? Or any of you guys have big house capable of making a track inside and you are willing to allow me to have a bicycle race in it?

My questions are:

Is there a better frame that I could use? Specifically

What wheels would you reccomend?

Is there anything else I would need to buy?

How much would it cost to have a bike shop assemble this bike after I buy all the parts?

Answer
Well, you know how and where you are riding better than me, so if you believe those parts are what you want, go for it.

In my shop, a frame-up build not including wheel building STARTS at $250. It is ALWAYS more expensive to build a bike from parts than to find a comparable model from any of the many builders... thats right, you could save half or more from your budget just by buying a ready-built bike!

Also, you need to make absolutely sure that everything is compatible- do you even know what bottom bracket length you need, or the seat post diameter, or the steerer diameter?

By the way, you forgot some important (and potentially expensive) parts like the wheels, chain, crank, bottom bracket, seat post, saddle, tires, tubes, rim strips, headset, hand grips, pedals, spacers, quick releases, seat binder, and kickstand.

OK, I'm kidding about the kickstand. Kind of.

"Hey Dad," one of my kids asked the other day, "What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?

jd

"We didn't have fast food when I was growing up," I informed him. "All the food was slow."

"C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?"

"It was a place called 'at home,'" I explained. "Grandma cooked every day and when Grandpa got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it."

By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it:

Some parents NEVER owned their own house, wore Levis, set foot on a golf course, traveled out of the country or had a credit card. In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears AND Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died.

My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow). We didn't have a television in our house until I was 11, but my grandparents had one before that. It was, of course, black and white, but they bought a piece of colored plastic to cover the screen. The top third was blue, like the sky, and the bottom third was green, like grass. The middle third was red. It was perfect for programs that had scenes of fire trucks riding across someone's lawn on a sunny day. Some people had a lens taped to the front of the TV to make the picture look larger.

I was 13 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called "pizza pie." When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had.

We didn't have a car until I was 15. Before that, the only car in our family was my grandfather's Ford. He called it a "machine."

I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home. But milk was.

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers. I delivered a newspaper, six days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which I got to keep 2 cents. I had to get up at 4 AM every morning. On Saturday, I had to collect the 42 cents from my customers. My favorite customers were the ones who gave me 50 cents and told me to keep the change. My least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day.

Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. Touching someone else's tongue with yours was called French kissing and they didn't do that in movies. I don't know what they did in French movies. French movies were dirty and we weren't allowed to see them.

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing.

Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?

MEMORIES from a friend:

My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to "sprinkle" clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old.

How many do you remember?

Head lights dimmer switches on the floor.
Ignition switches on the dashboard.
Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall.
Real ice boxes.
Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner.

3. Candy cigarettes
4. Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles

I don't know why this wouldn't let me say this before now but I'll leave it up a little longer.
I stole this. Although like most of you I remember it all too. It could be me.
But it wasn't.

Answer
Oh, brother, what memories. I remember all of them and the party line. My number was 6399R. I loved those metal ice trays. My sister used to make this frozen lemon stuff with graham crackers in one, and that was our dessert. My brother had comic books with "pizza pie" in them, and our neighbors who owned a TV Shop had a television with the different colored plastic thing over the front. We did not get a TV until I was 14 or 15. We had an ice box and an ice man, a milk man, and a coal man. A pipe for the icebox ran to the outside and made a nice birdbath for the birds.

The Coke in bottles was much better. I remember one machine that you had to run the bottle around to the front before you could get it out. That was the oddest one I remember. I remember drive-ins (we still have one in Waynesville, NC), cork popguns and roller skate keys. I took my skate key to school and turned up the water fountain with it because the water ran so low. I just looked at the thing and knew my skate key would fit it. We also used jar rubbers to hold our skates on better if we had thin soles on our shoes (which we had a lot).

My sister-in-law got her hair caught in a wringer of one of those old washing machines and we had to cut her hair to get her out. I remember them all. Thanks for the memories

Teen party ideas??!!

Fashion `a

Okay so sorry. This question is probably asked a lot. But I need some party ideas for my 14th birthday. I want something like really unique... not like "have a sleepover." Most of my friends aren't tooo girly, so maybe something somewhat active.

P.S. I've already had a mall scavenger hunt, since that seems to be a popular idea. lol.

Thanks!!
One more thing. No "dance party" or "pool party" ideas either please. Sorry if I'm coming off rude! I just don't want those regular ideas.

Answer
Gaming. Whatâs one of the fun spots in your area? Like a game themed restaurant or entertainment center? Ideas include: laser tag, video gaming, miniature golf, paint ball. Obviously, this costs money, but it often means no prep or clean up at home, since you can have the cake and present opening there.

Hiking. Most areas have cool places to go, even if itâs just a park. Combine it with a scavenger hunt that requires each team to have a disposable camera or (if the teens have camera phones, they can use them) to âcaptureâ items on the list.

Mystery Meal. This is an at home party, and youâll need a few volunteers to help you serve. Assign ânewâ names to each food item, each piece of silverware, napkins, toothpicks, beverages and make a menu using these ânewâ terms. Names can be nonsensical or fit a theme (motorcycles, movie idols, music artists). Each teen sits at the dinner table and is provided a menu of enough items to make 3 to 4 courses. A waiter or waitress takes each personâs order for the first course. In the kitchen the serves know what the code is and load up the plates appropriately. One guyâs choices give him a glass of juice, a toothpick, and a fork. The girl beside him receives dessert, salad, and a napkin. Kids find what they get pretty hilarious. (Menu items can only be ordered once per teen.) Mystery meal invite idea.

Bike Rally. Bicycle that is. Teens have to go in pairs. Each pair is given different directions (i.e. turn right at the T in the road, or turn left after the fifth house on the left, or at the swimming pool, go west). One partner has the odd numbered directions and the other the even number, so they must stay teamed. The goal is to see which pair can get to the destination in the shortest time. Of course, you want the actual âmileageâ to be similar for each route. You may also need some adult spotters at key locations to make sure the teens are on the right route. Of course, an adult host should be at the arrival point, too.

Concert. Many areas have free concertsâtheyâre the bands who havenât made it big yet, or the concert may be a benefit for a community food bank. For afterwards find a nearby restaurant where you can bring in your own cake and just buy beverages.

Lights, Camera, Action. Have a video camera or two and have the teens make their own videos. It could be a new music video for a favorite song, a commercial for some item, a short skit. Provide them with some starter ideas, some costumes and/or props. If you want something different than what you have around your house, thrift shops are a good source (except near Halloween). You can even take the teens to a thrift store or dollar store and give them each a few bucks to buy whatever they think theyâll need. And donât forget the popcorn!

How can I get the front brakes on my bike from rubbing against the tire?

kids bike 3 wheels image

Zook

A kid messed with my bike and now the front brakes on it slightly rub against the tire, causing it to slow down much faster. How can I adjust them to fix this problem? Also the tire itself seems a little loose.

Answer
It might not be the brakes. Check these 2 below before adjusting the brakes.
1. Check that the wheel is firmly attached and aligned properly. Place bike on the ground. If it has a quick release lever then release it, make sure the axle is firmly in the fork, and then close the lever making sure there is medium resistance. The medium resistance ensures that the lever won't simply vibrate open. If it has axle nuts get a properly fitting wrench, loosen both nuts first and then tighten down.
2. Check the straightness of the wheel. Do this by spinning the wheel and watching for a wobble side to side. If it wobbles a lot, that is from one brake pad to the other, go to your local bike shop and get you wheels trued.

If neither problem above exists, then adjust your brakes.
For V or long arm brakes, see the first link
For cantilevers, see second link
For race bike sidepull brakes (ones where the arms reach from the top and pinch the wheel like a hand and thumb), see 3rd link

If all this doesn't help or is the least bit confusing, go to your local bike shop. They should be able to help you easily and quickly if it is a single simple thing.

What is a good age for kids to start riding their bike?

Nicnac

What age do u think a child should be taught to ride a bike with training wheels? without training wheels?
What age do u think is appropriate for a kid to ride their bike into town with an adult or an older kid like a teenager maybe?
What age do u think is appropriate for a kid to be able to ride a bike downtown themselves?

any other thoughts about kids riding bikes?

Answer
it varies and depends how motivated the child is. my kids started riding w/ training wheels at 3 and w/o between 4 and 6 (some of my kids were more cautious and others were more motivated). they biked into town (maybe 4 miles for us) with an adult from about 5 or 6. as for by themselves, they haven't yet. my oldest is 10 and she sometimes bikes short distances around the neighborhood with a friend.

other thoughts: helmets are not optional. (speaking as someone who got a concussion riding my bike!)

Does this sound like typical 3 1/2 year old behavior?

Okay basically my son will be 3 1/2 in October, and I was wondering if he seems to have typical three and a half year old behavior and when the nonsense will end. Ever since my child was small, I have always had the same set of rules, and he use to listen to me and why I didn't want him to bother/touch certain things but lately he has been placing his hands over his ears and going "lalalalalala" singing to himself so he doesn't listen. Another thing he has been doing is wanting to use everything as an object to hit, it could be anything a plastic shovel if it looks like it's a weapon chances are he will try to use it like one even when you tell him to stop. Also the attitude on a daily basis, he has lately been telling both his dad and I to shut up as well as when he is sent to his room, calling me "stupid mommy" (of course an immediate time out). I am just wondering what is going on with my three year old little boy and when it gets better cause I stand my ground with rules and regulations and give him just as much free roam as long as he don't hurt himself but man this has been ridiculous lately. Please help!

Answer
well...a few things...he wouldn't know to use the term "shut up" unless he's heard it, and he wouldn't know how to use the term "stupid" unless he's heard it. Children project what they learn, especially at such a young age, at this age, they really in all essence have no sense of self, which is why they are so liable to mimic others. Basically? what I'm saying is that he would have no concept of using a bad attitude..unless he is learning one. He would not know how to place his hands over his ears and sing unless he saw someone else do so. my advice? watch what you say in front of him, watch how you talk in front of him (tone, attitude, etc) be careful of what you allow him to watch on tv.

Continue discipling when something is wrong, however, realize..he's 3. You speak of having the same rules and him always listening. I have a 2 year old...there is no such thing..they have no concept of "rules" nor of listening. They follow by example. That is how they learn, examples. You can't simply tell a child..do this, do that, don't do this, don't do that..say this..say that..don't say this, don't say that. They only learn it by watching who is most around them.

In my household, "stupid" is considered a curse word, we don't say it, we don't allow others to say it in our home or around our kids. Other words as well are off limits. My husband and I never ever argue in front of the kids, and we never ever question each other's ability in front of the kids. They are not allowed to watch any shows that do not hold the same values as we value in our home. And in some cases, this means that certain shows that others would think are totally harmless, are off limits. You'd be amazed at what kids pick up from tv. For example, my daughter who is 9 for a while watched zack and cody...harmless right? two twin boys living with single mom in a hotel and getting into trouble. Harmless....except they thought it was funny to get in trouble, they thought it was funny to try and outsmart mom, they thought it was funny to make fun of each other....now, yes, my daughter can seperate fact from fantasy..but then what do we want to fill her time up with? mindless tv with out of control kids that appears to be funny? or more family oriented things? bike riding, reading, games, etc.

my point is..he's learning from somewhere, he didn't pick it up on his own....pinpoint where he's learning it, remove it, it will take a while, but you will see a difference.

anyone have any embarrassing period stories and or first period stories?

Ask.Kali

you can share as many as you want and i will pick a best answer so you will get 10 points :)

you can tell your own or a friends :) haha

here are a few of mine:

the first one is when i was hanging out with my ex and my bestie and my current boyfriend (zack) and i was sitting on zack's lap and i forgot that i was on my period and that i hadn't changed my tampon for a while (and it was like the first day so it was really heavy) and when i got up there was a huge red spot on his leg and he knew what it was because he knew i was on my period and he went home really fast and changed but it was soooo embarrassing with my ex there ha ha

the next one is i was at an amusement park and i was in line to go on the biggest roller coaster in the park and i started getting really bad stomach pains (cramps) i told my sister but she said i was just nervous and then when we sat down on the car thing i felt wet down there and by the time the ride was done i felt soaked so we went to the bathroom and sure enough there was a big red stain in my undies and i didn't have any tampons with me so i had to use one of my sisters pads and i felt like i was wearing a Dipper for the rest of the day

another time me and my family were on vacation in utah and we were on a hike in the mountains and i had to pee really bad and there were no bathrooms near by because we were in the mountains so i had to pee behind a bush and guess who came to visit.... its a good thing i was prepared that time.....

ha ha another time i was in bed with zack...not having sex or anything just relaxing cuz i had really bad cramps and i thought my period was over but it wasn't because i went to the bathroom and was still bleeding and zack biked to the drug store to get me some tampons aha

and recently on a hot day me and my friend decided to go to the local pool and when there was a safety break she pointed out that i had blood running down my leg then later she got her period when we were changing and she goes sh*t anyone have a tampon and a whole bunch of people in the locker room threw them at her ahah

and also if you have any questions about period or boys or any girl problems feel free to email me at girl.advice2327@yahoo.com

you can also email me your stories if you dont want to post them on the internet :)
<3
oh and if you have and questions or need advice you can email me at the address above ^^

How do I ride downhill?

.....

I know how to ride a bike but I have trouble riding downhill( I get really scared and feel like I have no control over it because it's just going down on its own very fast) and especially when there's a turn I have to take while going downhill. I've fallen really badly while riding downhill, but wasn't hurt badly because i landed on grass, so I'd really appreciate some tips on riding on a very steep downhill. Thanks

Answer
Build up to it by starting on less steep hills. One of the keys to keep in mind is your body's position over the bike. If the hill is steep you're going to first of all be standing OK? Long before you head down that white knuckle descent try coasting down a neighborhood hill to practice a few skills. First note which foot you always put out in front of you. Yes that's right, in front of you. You should NEVER have one foot up and the other down-not unless you'd like to wear cast for six weeks. This is how it is. You are either left foot forward or right foot. Got it? Now the ride. As you start coasting down the hill (while standing with your blah..foot forward) let your arms extend so that if you need to you can easily slide to the back of the seat or even behind it. Stay low-that is keep your butt down. This lowers your center of gravity (CG). This is very important information which preceeds the following-braking. Your best friend for bleeding speed on cheeky descents is your front brake. Yep! Front. If properly applied this is one heck of a savior when the going gets freakishly speedy. With your weight set back and your (CG) low you can yard on those front brakes like there's no tomorrow. But note that if you attempt this behavior while standing tall over your handle bars you can fly weightlessly through the air without your bike. Get back and low. This is not to say that you should overlook the rear brakes. They're highly useful when dragged. This is why they wear out quicker than the front brakes-from all that dragging. Squeeze hard on these on steep terrain and you'll skid like a kid. Not an effective stopping technique. An excellent gravel cornering manuever though. know this, that your angel of mercy will deliver your carcus to ride another hill, perhaps that same day, if you heed this advice. Chances are if you don't encounter any large objects in your pathway as you descend your Goliath you'll do fine. Practice builds faith. Faith and experience walk together. Go get it.

How much should your feet touch when sitting on a dirt bike?

J

Should a person be able to plant there feet on the ground when sitting still on a trail bike? OR should they be able to just touch the ball of there foot? What is the the rule of thumb.

Answer
Dirt bikes need a lot of suspension travel and a lot of ground clearance, so they tend to be tall in the saddle. Most people cannot get both feet down on a modern dirt bike. Some kids ride dirt bikes and they can't touch at all.

It can be a problem if you get into a tight spot and can't get a foot down, but it happens to riders of all heights. The nature of offroad riding dictates that sooner or later you will get into a spot where you can't touch, or can't reach the kick star lever, or can't get up into the saddle from where you are standing.

For some terrain, I prefer an old-school twin shock bike where I can touch down more easily. Of course, that means I will have to give up some speed on the wide-open rough stuff. I also prefer an electric start, in part because of crusty old knees, and in part so that at least I can always start my bike wherever it is.

Should I buy a toddler bike seat that fits in front of me or behind me?

bettiebee4

I'm not sure whether to buy the new style toddler bike seats such as those at: http://www.weeride.com.au/ or the more traditional style that sits on the back of the bike.

I know they don't take as much weight, but thats about the only negative I can see so far.

Any feedback on them for those that have them?

Answer
Many parents like the top tube mount seats because of the "closeness" with the child. Being able to talk easier. Having their arms around -- to protect the child so to speak.

Like you said the seat isn't rated for as much weight, but they also have a size limitation. The larger child should be behind you, especially if the parent is petite.

If you get the rear seat the child can ride in it longer, say from 1 yr to 4+ years old. Usually, somewhere between 4 and 5 the kid learns to ride a bike on their own.

What is the name of the old kid's bikes that had a seat on the back for another child?

I used to have one when I was a child and would like one for my kids but don't know what they are called? It was a red metal bike with a little seat on the back. They also came in blue. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
I may have been a 3 wheeler.

Answer
Sounds like your bike had a banana seat, could ride 2 kids.If so,check out links, maybe you'll see yours. Many bike makers had those seats so hard to pin down which one you had.Popular in late 60's through today.

Edit
Google three wheelers from the years you remember. There were at least 12 manufacturers who made trikes.

How long should it take to teach my 6 year old to ride a bike (without training wheels)?

I actually have an almost 6 year old daughter, and an almost 7 year old daughter... we tried a few times last summer... and it was too hard for them...i'm not sure how to help them... I hold the bike seat and run... but i don't think they pedal fast enough.... HELP!

Answer
Ditch the training wheels all together and make sure their bikes are low enough to the ground that they can flatly place their feet on the ground and stop themselves from falling while they try.

We started doing this for our kids when my son learned how to ride a bike in less than a day when he was at a neighbor's house for the afternoon. They had a bike that was actually a bit too small for him and he mastered it with no problem. After that, we got him a bike that was more his size.

I have never known training wheels to be of much use for anyone.

What kid of bike is good for an adult beginner?

tothepoint

I never learned how to ride a two wheeler as a kid just a tricycle.

I've tried the Giant Suede and the Schwinn Town and Country Trike and was looking at the Townie. $500 is about my price range.
By tried I mean I hopped on and sat on it while the saleswoman held the front wheel. The trike I was able to get on an d go obviously =D

Answer
You will have to judge if a three wheeler will meet you needs.

I will tell you how to learn to ride a two wheeler. Buy a low cost Dahon folding bike and get a bike helmet. Drop the seat way down so you can stand up while sitting on the seat. Wear your helmet and long pants. Go to a local park during quiet hours when no one is there. Drop the seat on the Dahon so low that it can be used as a scooter with both of your feet flat on the ground. With helmet on and riding in the soft grass in the park walk around with your weight on the seat and getting the hang of the steering. Don't use the pedals at all and in fact they can even be removed from the bike. When you get too far leaned to one side use the leg on that side to right yourself and start again. This will take most adults about 1-2 weeks of visits to the park to get the hang of it. After a while you will be able to coast and hold your legs off the ground for several seconds before the bike loses speed and leans over. At that point you can try to actually start pedaling.

I decided to get a bike to commute to work. I live very close now (less than 2 miles) and would like to bike instead of walk. Doing some research leads me to believe that I have to spend about 300 to 400 dollars on a bike.
Any thoughts on that?
I would like a bike with some gears, but nothing fancy.
Thanks for the input.

Answer
Just like $150 basketball shoes don't make you able to slam dunk; a $1000 bike will not make you Lance Armstrong. There is a happy medium of bike quality and price. Walmart and Target don't have anyone that is skilled in bike assembly, just a high school kid that can kinda follow directions when he feels like it, when he's not too pissed off at his girlfriend. Try Performance bike, its a chain bike store that has qualified mechanics that put your bike together, they have much better bikes overall and yes you will spend more on a bike you will have something that will stay in adjustment. Remember you are trusting your life to the bike, brakes, steering etc are critical components, especially if you are going to bike to work a few days a week. Performance has lifetime tuneups on their bikes so you get the long term value compared to the discount store.

How do I know what the best bike for me is?

southernbe

I am looking to get a bike to give me a cardio alternative to walking or running. I haven't ridden a bike since I was a kid, so I am trying to figure out what kind of bike to get -- mountain bike, road bike etc. How do I make sure that I get the right bike for me --- kind and size?

Answer
Start by reading "Bicycles: How to Choose"
http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bicycle.html

It's all based on "where & how" you will be riding. Road bikes will be your fastest choice but for the streets & smooth roads ONLY. Mountain bikes or all-terrain bikes basically suck on the streets because of the knobby off road tires & suspension parts zapping your energy. Knobby tires slow you down. And with every turn of the pedals, part of your energy is absorbed or soaked up by suspension parts. All-terrain bikes are OK on the streets ONLY if they have a smoother "street friendly" tread design & "lock-out" front forks. This (in essence) turns the suspension fork into a rigid fork with the simple twist of a switch.

Hybrids are a good "all around" type bike. They are great at nothing - but still good at many things. They can be ridden on the streets or light (man-made) groomed off-road trails of finely crushed stone.

"How do I make sure that I get the right bike for me --- kind and size?" Nine very, very simple words... See your authorized, independent, knowledgeable, friendly, local BICYCLE shop! Not K-Mart, Wally World or Target. At a REAL bicycle shop you can TRY B4 you BUY! You can test ride as many bikes as your little heart desires before the sale!

Other advantages are...
1) Professional sales - not some minimum wage "associate".
2) Professional assembly of the bike by a certified mechanic - again, not some minimum wage associate.
3) FREE service after the sale. ALL new bikes require a tune-up as shift & brake cables stretch a bit during the break-in process. Some shops do this only once. Some for a year. A bike shop near me does this for LIFE!
http://bigshark.com/about/policies-and-shipping-pg11.htm
4) Vastly better quality. Wally World lists bicycles on their website in the TOY Dept.! Does that give you a clue? A quality bike from a REAL bicycle shop - taken care of properly - can last a lifetime. Those from discount stores are "disposable bikes", meant to be ridden a year or so - then into a dumpster.

See link below. This is my "pride & joy" - a 2011 Raleigh Sojourn touring road bike. Time spent in the shop for repairs? ZERO. Money spent after the sale? A bottle of chain oil (about $8.00) and a set of new tires when the original ones wore out. And I replaced them with the SAME tires. Flat tires to date? ZERO - none - nada. Sure - you'll need to do routine maintenance & cleaning on any type of bike. But getting a quality bike from the start cost LESS in the long run.

kids bicycle baskets image

Lalala.

Or is it an exaggeration? And if it's true, why do they cycle so much in the Netherlands in particular? And for what do they use it? Only for recreation?

Answer
No it's not an exaggeration. It is incredibly common to use a bicycle for pretty much any journey within reason rather than a car or public transport. Those who are able will readily cycle to work & back every day (and virtually all kids attending local schools do so by bike), or at least to the local train station (and some have fold up bikes so they can use the other end as well)

It starts young. e.g. my 3 year old cycles his bike to playschool and my younger daughter has a seat on the back of my bike. Again completely normal thing to do for them. We go to our town centre by bike normally as a family because it is just as easy (and a lot cheaper when you consider the cost of parking), and with the exception of the Saturday shopping then I do all other shopping by bike as well (saddle bags on the back of my bike and a basket up front).

Of course people use them for recreation as well. There are some lovely national parks around the country (e.g. the Veluwe http://www.hogeveluwe.nl/default.asp?language=2) and other areas that are lovely to cycle around. I live in a area that within 2 mins by bike we can be in wide open green spaces and cycle for hours in the countryside.

Why? Well you have to consider a few factors. Firstly the Netherlands is incredibly flat and as a result it's very easy to cycle pretty much anywhere. I have lived in Norway and the UK and the idea of doing the same simply was not realistic in comparison

Secondly it's a small country with a lot of people for the small space and as a result very population dense. This means that if everyone did everything by car it would be a worse nightmare on the roads than what it is. To get to the playschool, shops, town centre then it's actually quicker by bike than car. I have also lived on the outskirts of Amsterdam and cycled into the centre all the time overtaking cars doing the same journey.

The country is very bike friendly and cycle lanes are normal as well. Motorists (generally) respect this fact and the traffic laws are in the favour of the cyclist most of the times. Again this is completely different to many other countries

So yes it's normal, yes it's great - but something that's not as easily replicated elsewhere in my opinion :0)

EDIT - I just posted mine and saw pretty much the same answer from Thijs, but ok at least this way you are sure of the facts and reasoning :0)

I want a bike basket for my Boston Terrier (20lbs). Does anyone know of a basket that will hold my fat dog?

kpetrovich

I've looked into front mount wire baskets on a bunch of different sites but none of the descriptions tell how much weight it will hold!! Any suggestions for a front mount basket that will hold 20lbs?

Answer
If you're set on a basket, look for the kind that newspaper boys used to use. But remember - 20 pounds of moving, unstable weight on your handlebars can cause a serious wreck. The safest way is to get one of those bicycle trailers parents use to tow their kids. They have an enclosed, screened in top so the dog can't jump out. Just be sure you make wider turns when you go around corners, so you don't flip the trailer. Target stores have them for less than $100.
