How do I fix up a kid's bike?

Lexie

Okay, so I gave my childhood bicycle to my mom's friend's kid and she THRASHED it! The once beautiful leather seat is trashed, the chain is rusty and I'm guessing I won't be able to use it, she took the back tire off, and the bike's been sitting in the hot sun for a few months now. I am not happy right now. My mom wants to take it to the dump, but I'm not letting that happen. So can anyone please tell me what I should do! I know I need a new bike and both the front and back tires need to probably be replaced, since she won't give me back the tire she took off. So can you tell me what I need to get and how I need to put it on. Like doesn't the back tire have to connect to the brakes? Thanks.

Answer
Hey Lexie!

I'm sorry to hear something so precious to you was so abused. =(

From the details you provided, it looks like you will need a new:
1. Chain
2. Back rim + tubing + tire
3. Front rim + tubing + tire
4. Seat

Honestly, repairing yourself is not hard at all. Just be prepared to get a little dirty.
And since I do not know the following:
Bicycle type (beach cruiser, bmx, mountain bike, etc)
Size
Make and model...
I wouldn't be able to provide any more information than what I already have said. =/

Your best bet is to go to a nearby Bike shop and see what they have to say as far as repairing your bike. And be careful, they may want to charge you an outrageous price just for assembly...

Email me if you'd like help with the assembly, or anything else.
Take care!

What would cause a kid's bike to stop cranking?

Josh R

Bought a little Huffy for my daughter's first bike. Went together easy, looks pretty good. However, after so many revolutions, it stops pedaling forward. I have to violently go back and forth with the crank to get it to loosen up, and sometimes this knocks off the chain. I've tried tightening the chain by moving the wheel back, but that didn't help. It "feels" like it's getting snagged in teh rear tire, not the crank, but I'm not 100% sure. Does it just need a good greasing? Why would it work for a while after getting freed up though?

Answer
If the chain is not falling off & getting lodged somewhere - it's most likely a bad bottom bracket (crank bearings). Real bicycle shops give free estimates. Find one.

I hate to say this but...your first mistake was - "Bought a little Huffy..." Very cheap discount store bicycle. If it's new, take it back for a full refund. Then go see a REAL bicycle shop.

Question about an accessory for a bike?

Is there a such thing as an adult carrier for a bike?

This might be a dumb question but here is why I asked, my uncle comes to stay with us sometimes and he is mentally challenged. He LOVES to go for rides and go places but sometimes we cant afford the gas for the whole time he stays, instead of him staying in the house all the time, it would be nice if I could take him for a bike ride or something, he cant ride one on his own and he wouldnt be able to do it even with training wheels so that isnt an option. He isn't very good on his feet so he probably wouldn't like to walk to places, so I was wondering, you know how they have those kid carriers? Not the ones directly on the back of the bike but the ones that sit on the ground, and drag behind the bike, do they have those for adults? Thanks for any help you can give!!! I've asked this question before and got no answers! please help!

Answer
I've never heard of that, but you could try a tandem bicycle. The only thing if moves around he could make you crash.

I know they have the rickshaw or pedicab bikes for sale, those are the ones you see at touristy places. Some have the passengers in the front others have the "driver" up front.

Also look into mulitpassenger bikes or even adult trikes.

Answer
The Columbia Cricket model 9161 cost $49.95 new. It's a small children s bike it has the 16" wheels, a one piece crank with coaster brakes, both Boys and Girls shown on site below.

If the bike is in good shape it could be a collectors item and worth big money to the right individual I'd do a lot of research before I sold that bike, you could have a gold mine and don't know it.

How do you construct a Bicycle Air-Pump? (Class Project)?

j

I'm trying to organize a project for my kids and have done much research, but seemingly nowhere on the internet does it explain the actual process of piecing together a working air pump. One that would pump a basketball is perfect, but I'll settle for any type. A pictured step-by-step manual would be perfect, but I'll take a video, a link, anything. ANY HELP WOULD BE AMAZING! Thank you.

I've found out you need a handle, a piston to push air, a cylinder, a flexible tube, a connection valve attaches, a second smaller cylinder, an air transfer valve that fills the tires w/o emptying it, and a ball that blocks incoming air that is in the valve.

Here are some videos if it helps any of you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiHpsg6wksc

http://science.discovery.com/tv-shows/deconstructed/videos/deconstructed-how-bike-pumps-work.htm

And here are some basic mechanistic type of information I've found:

The cylinder holds air. The handle moves air in the cylinder when pressed. The connector connects the cylinder with your bike's tire valve. The locking lever locks the pump on the valve. All you need is two pieces of pipe, leather, and two one-way valves. Then you need some hose of course and the part that attaches to the Schreider valve on the bicycle. The pipes have to fit one inside the other. The pumping leather is just some unfinished leather attached to the end of the inner pipe so that it seals it to the outer pipe. Usually the leather also acts as the first one-way valve by leaking when the handle is pulled up. The outer pipe has to be under 2" or else it will be too difficult to operate by hand. The second one-way valve is at the bottom of the pipe and attaches it to the hose so that the air in the tire doesn't come back out through the pump.

Answer
here is one for water. Should not be too different than for air.

http://www.instructables.com/id/Homemade-WaterAir-hand-pump/

I would use a 1" pvc pipe with a cap and a tee..
Use a threaded rod for the piston plunger (or a 1/4" rod with theaded ends will be easier on the pipe cap but you will have to cut threads on the rod -- easy to do with a die)
bolt a piece of leather to the end of the rod using two washers and two nuts.
drill a hole in the cap so that the rod can go through.
attach another piece of pipe (or wood) at right angles to the end of the rod for a handle.
Attach it with nuts.
put a tee at the end of the pump tube and put a pair of check valves at the ends of the tee.
One set up to let air in and the other to let air out. Could be as simple as a ball bearing over a hole..
Your check valves could be as easy as taking a piece of 1/2" pvc pipe and cutting a flat piece of pvc plastic into a circle with a hole saw -- the diameter of the plastic disk should be the same as the outside diameter of the pipe. Put a ball bearing (or marble) with a soft compression spring inside the small piece of pipe and glue on the two disks each with a small [1/4"] hole in it -- one will be plugged with the bearing. On the inlet valve one end can be a pvc cap since it is open to the air.

An adaptor down to a 1/4" hose barb fitting some plastic hose for the air hose. and some hose clamps to hold everything tight. And one inflation needle. If you get a hose with an insdide diameter the same as your fitting to the inflation needle (1/16" pipe?) then you can just clamp it on.

Do I really have to spend that kind of money on a bike?

Emmi

I decided to get a bike to commute to work. I live very close now (less than 2 miles) and would like to bike instead of walk. Doing some research leads me to believe that I have to spend about 300 to 400 dollars on a bike.
Any thoughts on that?
I would like a bike with some gears, but nothing fancy.
Thanks for the input.

Answer
Just like $150 basketball shoes don't make you able to slam dunk; a $1000 bike will not make you Lance Armstrong. There is a happy medium of bike quality and price. Walmart and Target don't have anyone that is skilled in bike assembly, just a high school kid that can kinda follow directions when he feels like it, when he's not too pissed off at his girlfriend. Try Performance bike, its a chain bike store that has qualified mechanics that put your bike together, they have much better bikes overall and yes you will spend more on a bike you will have something that will stay in adjustment. Remember you are trusting your life to the bike, brakes, steering etc are critical components, especially if you are going to bike to work a few days a week. Performance has lifetime tuneups on their bikes so you get the long term value compared to the discount store.

Upgrading my bike???

Kelly

I use this bike for leisure but every now and then I take it for long distances. It's a cruiser with foot brakes but I LOVE it!!!! The seat is uncomfortable and my hands are starting to tingle after holding on to the handle bars for so long. And it's a heavy bike to put on my bike rack... Is there another type of bike like this with a comfortable seat and handlebars? And also lighter? I was going to look at the bike shop but I don't want to spend $500.00 on a bike.. Do you think Toys-R-Us, Walmart or Target has a good bike.... I don't even know what brand I should stick with.
Thank-you!!! Good advice!! I have no problem spending $200-$300 on a bike and I can ask my dad to put it together!!! I defiantly need a lighter bike to put on bike rack and also hang it on the wall during winter!!! Thank-you!

Answer
I think you will be dissapointed with a Toys-R-Us, Walmart or Target bike. They are put together by a highschool kid in the back room. I don't think its worth risking your life on the mood of a 15yr old. Performance bike is a bike shop chain that is pretty good. Has reasonable quality on bikes and good service, they offer lifetime basic tune ups. But understand if you want lighter you will need to spend more...

Here's a women's cruiser that is $230

I store my new bicycle in the balcony under a roof, in Dallas. Will it get ruined if I keep storing it outside?

vargasdfw

I bought a bicycle (paid more than what I had planned), I store it outside in the balcony under a roof, I live in Dallas (more dry than humid), I ride the bike every day. Will it get ruined if I continue storing it outside?

Answer
Being outside long term will promote oxidation. Also, if the sun hits it for a substantial amount of time rubber and vinyl will take a beating from UV rays. So I don't recommend long term outdoor storage.

Best you can do is keep the sun off and very lightly coat bare metal with a light oil. With my kids bikes, garage kept, I spray a little WD40 on a rag and wipe it down, then take a dry rag and wipe it again. It leaves a very minute oil coating which really helps and minimizes dirt attraction. Don't cover in plastic it can promote condensation.

Is there any home cures for this?

astoriasho

(Excuse me for any spelling mistakes)
Well...
I need a way to become less afraid, and be more happy, and not have the constant fear of my mom.
I use the word "mom" instead of "grandma" due to mom is faster to write, but my real mother and father deserted me, and so did my grandfather. Well, I was in school awhile ago, then I got homeschooled (cyberschooled) and that took away my school friends. Then, a while later, my 4 friends at my apartment complex, 2 of them got BB guns and they played with them once. All 4 got botted out of the apartment complex (they were all my cloest friends, too)
We moved to a different state, with my aunt.
Since then, my grandma has become more tempermental and angry. I have become afreaid of her and never go a night without thinking if she was going to kill me tonight. She now dosen't allow me to go outside because I'm going to get kidnapped or raped or something.
When I was rideing my bike, it was an open area with a long strip of houses, no cars
in sigh.
So I decided to let my energy out, and sped up a tad bit, makeing out distance around 50 feet away, and I slowed down, and she jolted by me, and I was grounded and she cept on screaming at me.
I got a C in something in my school, and she threw a big fuss over it, I was grounded, and she yelled at me and said so many hatred things to me.
She has made me Antisocial, not having any friends, or even going outside.
My mom blames me for being anti social and havving no friends, she says that it's from me never wanting to go outside. I am afraid to tell her "I want to go outside! Let me outside, I'm so lonley!" the last time I gave her a command she got scary, I hid in my room the whole day.
She just got some surgery on her face, so she's out cold in her bed, that's why I'm writeing this.
I have overheard some of her conversations of how she used to take out knives in the middle of the njight thinking "My kids would be so much better if I did this" but for some reason she never
did it.
I'm about to be 11...
Is it realy my fault like she says that I am antisocial, not havving any friends, or going outside because I'm not allowed to?
We moved in with my aunt, and she gives me some confort, but she has a tight scedule and I don't have the chance to talk to her that often.
My Aunt got a puppy and wants me to train it, I was glad due to the fact I didn't have to ask to go in the backyard to let the dog out.
My grandma is 67, according to my Aunt.

Answer
There aren't really any home cures.

My biggest concern is the remark you made about the knives. If that's true your grandmother probably has at least some emotional problems. At the same time, I can understand why she would worry about you if you're out and around by yourself.

One thing that makes your situation difficult is if you're not in school. Kids who go to school get to have a little social life there (not to mention get an education). They also get to talk about problems/worries they have with a school counselor. If kids can be out playing some sport (even if its organized) or taking dancing lessons or doing some other activity they get to meet more kids too.

Is there any way you can talk to your grandmother, tell her you'd like to go to counseling "to be able to talk about what you can do with your life" or else "because you're feeling really lonely". Would she let you go to a counselor, so you could start by talking to them about what's going on?

In fairness to her, she may be exhausted and frustrated with whatever is going on in her life and with having to worry about keeping you safe.

What about your aunt? Is she someone sensible and reliable? Could you talk to her?

Believe me, when I make this guess its important you realize I pretty much don't know what I'm talking about. Still, I'm going to guess that maybe you're feeling tense and anxious with whatever is going on; and having "stress chemicals" going on as a result of being tense could be making you worry about your grandmother killing you more than you really would have to.

Could you talk to some adult (even your grandmother) and ask if you could go to school if you promise to stay out away from any kids who do anything they shouldn't? Could you ask if you could just go to school and maybe join some things for after school? Tell her you're lonely, and you promise you will not do anything you aren't supposed to do; but you just want to go to school and join some activities.

Could you say something about how you know its a lot for your grandmother to have her worries, and how you'd like the chance to have her worry less about you because you'd be in school, you'd come home and do your homework, and you'd just be involved with group activities at school? Maybe you wouldn't be out riding wherever you want on your bike, but you'd meet friends, have things to do, and get good grades if you did your homework.

I don't know your grandmother, but think about this: If she doesn't let you go out because she worries you'll be kidnapped or raped or something - don't you think it must be because she loves you and would die if anything awful happened to you? Do you even know that the thing about what she said about the knives is true?

If you can't do anything else, and if you're really that afraid; maybe if you could call your state's children's services (DCFS or DSS or DCS, depending on the state) and ask the people you talk to what ou can do they may be able to help. You should not be in fear, and maybe your fear isn't even fear you should have; because maybe your grandmother would never, ever, do anything. Still, if you're afraid you need to ask some sensible adult to help you.

What if you say to your grandmother, "I keep wishing I could talk to a counselor about my mother and father not being around ever. Do you think I could see one?"

What things make you think the most of the 80's?

Answer
Memories of when I was a little girl:

(I was born in 1973)

You had that Fisher Price Doctor 's Kit with a stethoscope that actually worked.

You owned a bicycle with a banana seat and a plastic basket with flowers on it.

You learned to skate with actual skates (not roller blades) that had metal wheels.

You had nightmares after watching Fantasy Island .

You had rubber boots for rainy days and Moon boots for snowy days. YEAH! ~ You owned a "Slip-n-Slide",on which you injured yourself on a sprinkler head more than once.

You owned "Klick-Klacks" and smacked yourself in the face more than once.

You had either a "bowl cut" or "pixie," not to mention the "Dorothy Hamill". People sometimes thought you were a boy.

Your Holly Hobbie sleeping bag was your most prized possession.

You wore a poncho, gauchos, and knickers. And now they're back in style!

You begged Santa for the electronic game, Simon.

You had the Donnie and Marie dolls with those pink and purple satiny shredded outfits.

You spent hours in your backyard on your metal swing set with the trapeze. The swing set tipped over at least once.

You had homemade ribbon barrettes in every imaginable color. (Oh yeah!)

You had a pair of Doctor Scholl's sandals (the ones with hard sole & the buckle). You also had a pair of salt-water sandals (AKA: Jellies!)

You wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder really bad; you wore that Little House on the Prairie-inspired plaid, ruffle shirt with the high neck in at least one school picture; and you despised Nellie Olson!

You wanted your first kiss to be at a roller rink.!

Your hairstyle was described as having "wings" or "feathers" and you kept it "pretty" with the comb you kept in your back pocket.

~ When you walked, the "wings" flapped up and down, looked like you were gonna "take off"

You know who Strawberry Shortcake is, as well as her friends, Blueberry Muffin and Huckleberry Pie.

You carried a Muppets lunch box to school and it was metal, not plastic. With the thermos inside!

You and your girlfriends would fight over which of the Dukes of Hazzard was your boyfriend.

YOU had Star Wars action figures, too!

It was a big event in your household each year when the "Wizard of Oz" would come on TV. Your mom would break out the popcorn and sleeping bags!

You often asked your Magic-8 ball the question: "Who will I marry...Shaun Cassidy, Leif Garrett, or David Cassidy..?"

You completely wore out your Grease, Saturday Night Fever, and Fame soundtrack record album.

You tried to do lots of arts and crafts, like yarn and Popsicle-stick God's eyes, decoupage, or those weird potholders made on a plastic loom.

You made Shrinky-Dinks and put iron-on kittens on your t-shirts!

You used to tape record songs off the radio by holding your portable tape player up to the speaker.

You had subscriptions to Dynamite and Tiger Beat.

You learned everything you needed to know about girl issues from Judy Blume books (Are you there God, It's me, Margaret.)

You thought Olivia Newton John's song "Physical" was about aerobics.

You wore friendship pins on your tennis shoes, or shoelaces with heart or rainbow designs.

You wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer.

You drowned yourself in Love's Baby Soft - which was the first "real" perfume you ever owned .. .

You glopped your lips in Strawberry Roll-on lip gloss till it almost dripped off.

What bike should I get for my kid?

Ben

This morning I ran over my kids bicycle when I backed out of the driveway. I was thinking about getting him a walmart junk bike but I figured that maybe I should just go out and get him a good one instead. Are there any good aluminum framed BMX bikes for 7 year old kids? His destroyed bike is an 18" walmart Mongoose ship anchor.

Answer
Bike shops are usually the best place to get an entry level bike for any age. Sure the price will be more than a department store, but you will be getting a suitable vehicle as opposed to a disposable toy.

Childrenâs bikes are usually cheep and disposable no matter what. Some BMX companies (freestyle & race) have invested some money into making childrenâs bikes more reliable for performance. Childrenâs mountain bikes have come a long way as well. Expect these bikes to be more expensive than normal childrenâs bikes.

Take him to a bike shop and hook him up with whatever he likes that fits him. At 7 years old a bike is usually a bike. If you have money, buy it. If you donât find something in your price range at the bike shop, check out craigslist. Hook up with a few sellers that are selling something similar to the bike you found at the bike shop. Do some test riding, and low ball the best seller with cash.

If you donât know anything about bikes, take the craigslist bike back to the shop for a solid once over.

I hope this helped!

tag along with existing kids bike?

Kilino9

I saw on the street a kids bike attached to an adult's bike with a sort of a tag along pipe kind of a thing. Does anybody know where to buy it or what it is called

Answer
There are two different types. One is called a Tag A Long that is made to attach to the seat post of an adult bike and the other is a boom type device that lifts the front wheel of the childs bike off the ground. The tag a long is a much better design.

Do a Google seach for.

how safe are bike trailers for kids? the carrier that attaches to your bike?

Descarada

Answer
bike trailers are the safest for your kids with out a doubt! i would not recommend a babykiller (baby seat). alot of trailers have a pivot point where it connects to the bike so if you fall the trailer does not tip over

What measurement are people referring to when they list their bike size?

jobeken

I'm looking to break into the sport of road biking. I bought a mountain bike thinking I was gonna hit some trails but the only time I have to ride is at night and, with my daughter's kid trailer, weekends are out of the picture too. I've been using my mtb on the road for the last few months, and while it's still fun, I know the bike is pretty heavy and and slow compared to a road bike. With sizing different between the two and understanding that a proper fitment is key, I want to make sure I choose a bike with the right sizing. I'm just under 5'9" and, according to thesizing calculator at competitivecyclist.com, a bike with a top tube length of 57cm, a seat tube length center to center of 52-53cm, and a seat tube length center to top of 54-54.5cm is my ideal fitment. I understand that by going to a local bike shop they could take into account my measurements then order a nice bike for me accordingly. However, I have also taken to looking for used road bike due to the lower cost and the fact that, for the same money as a new entry level bike, I could get one with better components and frame construction. When people list a bike for sale they typically refer to a single measurement of 52cm, 54cm, and so on. What specific measurement are they referring to? I would obviously test it out before buying but any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Road bike frame measurement is not standardized so you have to know a) the fraame size designation of a particular bike you see for sale and b) how that measurement is made and what are the other dimensions ( top tube length, reach, and head tube length for that particular size.) A " size" that you see in an ad usually refers to the seat tube length although that could be a virtual size if you are talking about frames with sloping top tubes. This is why the frame geometry chart for a particular model is important. Some bike manufacturers only give sizes as small, medium, large etc. so the frame geometry chart is even more important. One of my road bikes and my time trial bike are both from the same company, yet the road bike is a size large and the TT bike is a small, yet they both fit properly. My son's first road bike was a 54 cm. He had a chance to buy a much better bike second hand that was a 52 cm. We measured both frames and they came out pretty much identical so he bought it and has been riding it for several years. A 57 cm top tube sounds very very long for someone on 5' 9" in height and you would find it very difficult to find a 53 or 54cm frame with that long a top tube unless it was custom built. You really should consult a bike shop for a proper fitting of any bike you are considering. As for ads for second hand bikes, don't count on the owner knowing the correct size of a bike, you have to take your own measurements

how can I teach 5 year old to ride his bike?

sarahjane1

I just took the training wheels off his 12 inch two wheeler. Any tips on helping him learn to ride?

Answer
Assure him that you will run beside him and hold the seat of his bike so that he won't fall. Once he gets going, you can let go of his seat for a time. Don't tell him that you're doing that. Once he gets up to about 10-20 seconds without you holding onto the seat, show him your hands and tell him that he's been riding without your help.

My dad taught every kid in the neighborhood how to ride that way. He took pride in it.

How to explain this to a 6 yr old?

Athene

I'll try to be brief.

We used to be friends with the neighbours, our kids are the same age and were always seeking each other out to play together. My son idolises their older boy. As a result we ended up often having coffee together, dinners together at each other's houses, babysitting each other's kids in turn almost every afternoon etc.

2 Months ago they went all unfriendly, gave us the frosty treatment. I went over a few times as my son wanted to play and the wife didn't open the door though I could see her inside - her little boy opened it himself, all delighted to see my son, so she was obliged to let us in but the frosty reception I got was embarrassing - though my son didn't notice.

I invited her son over to our house but she said no, though I could not get my son away from her kmids and she said he could stay. I tried one more time, hoping she's talk about what was bothering her, but it was the same. After that I have not let my son go over there, adn her kids have never ever come to seek him out at our house... they used to come over by themseves literally every single afternoon.

Problem is my son still wants to go there and, since the kids round here all play outside on their bikes, we see them outside and my son always wants to go inside their house like he used to.

Frankly I don't care about not being friends with her, she has done all kinds of rude and nasty things too long to mention here - the only reason I was ever friendly was because the kids were so crazy about each other.
The question is, how do I explain to my son that we are not welcome there any more and to not go into their house? And not think he's going to get invited to his ex-best friend's birthday party etc?
It's reached the point where I think I will have to say something to him to try to make him understand...
To those who've left silly answers, please, MY SON IS 6 YEARS OLD. I want serious ideas about what I can say that would be appropriate for a kid that age, and that he will be able to understand.

Answer
Having gone through almost the same situation in the last year, I can tell you that is just as difficult with an eleven year old son. It's been just over a year and my son still misses his best friend.

I can tell you what has worked long term, but in all honesty, those first few months were really rough. My son had no idea what had happened and I was unable to explain to him what had happened. His feelings were hurt, his social circle outside of school was gone, and I couldn't fix it.

I began pushing him to contact friends from school. He was able to establish a new friends that were his age and still in elementary school. It took some work at first because not every "play date" worked out for both boys. Over time, he developed better friendships with the boys in his class that have also moved beyond the classroom.

When he was really missing his friend, I made sure I found time to help him bridge past the hurt. We played board games together, he taught he some basics on his xbox games, and we read. He worked in the garage with his Dad and learned how to weld. His Grandparents picked him up and he helped with yardwork (earning his own money) and learned how to sew and fish.

In the end, the move past the friendship with the older boy was good for everyone. My son spent additional time with his grandparents and with us, learning from us and forming lasting bonds. The friendships that my son formed at his grade level have followed him on to junior high and are more equal than the friendship he had with the older boy. I lost a one sided friendship with the child's mother which freed up considerable time.

Give your son time, support him as he grieves the lost friendship, and help him regain social footing by encouraging other friendships.

Pedal fell off kids bike?

peterngood

We bought a used bike and the left pedal fell off. I bought a package of new pedals and installed the left pedal (backward thread) but it too wore threadbare in a week and fell out. I drilled and tapped the pedal shaft with 8/32 thread added a washer and screw and the screw broke. I do not want to invest in a crank, any ideas please?

Answer
Obviously the crank threads are stripped. Assuming you're too cheap or broke (nuthin wrong with that - it happens) to buy a new crank (not that expensive for a kids bike), you should be able to garbage pick a bike with similar cranks.

Hand brakes vs brake pedals on kids bikes? Please read?

archuletae

Which is better- buying a bike with hand brakes or foot brakes? Someone I know said you can flip over if you use hand brakes, are they dangerous? Thanks.

Answer
This depends on the age of the child. Notice that most smaller kids bikes, 12'' through 20" have the coaster (foot) brake. They also probably have one hand brake, usually not a very powerful brake. This allows the child to get used to the concept of braking by hand. Bikes with only hand brakes will have more powerful brakes. These are very responsive and generally work well when kids understand and are comfortable with their use. Engaging only the front hand brake suddenly will cause the bike to stop abruptly in the front end, causing the "endo" flip you are referring to. Always using the rear brake in conjunction with the front brake will prevent this dangerous situation.
