I want to participate in the Bike Across America fund raiser in summer 2011. I work out regularly now but no riding where I currently live. I won't be able to ride until I'm back living in the US in March. Will three months be enough time to train for the 3000 mile ride? I'll have March, April, May to train. Is it doable?? Thanks

Answer
wow

What a great event. Why cant you ride now? At least a stationary bike would be advised.

The most important thing is saddle time. Getting used to being on a bike all day takes some work. Ride and work your way up to a 100 mile day. This will get you ready for the event.

The website has some great training tips.

I participate in the RAC with my children for five years now next year will be six. We take 5th graders from the Colorado River acroos the dessert of Southern California up and over the Laguna Mountains and to the coast in Carlsbad.

I am always amazed at these kids. The event is well organized and I have seen all types of children succeed. We have an environment for success and the kids love it.

Your mindset is important and you have taken the first step of desire. Now you need to train for success.

YOU CAN DO IT.

Whether you will or not depends on you.

Get a bike that fits. Get some riding gear and go for it. Your local bike shop should help if you ask

I wish you the best of luck and hope you go for it. Should you take the next step and train I will be more than glad to donate a small amount to your fund raising should you decide to go.

I am disappointed in those of you that do not encourage Erin in this endeavor.

What is the best way to go about starting a road bicycle youth club in Western PA?

There are not any local clubs and/or events that really promote the sport in our local high schools or colleges for that matter. I think it could generate a legitimate interest but not sure who or how to go about introducing into the system.

Answer
Go to some local bike races... www.usacycling.org . Look for kids and ask 'em. And i KNOW there's racing around there, look where they held Nationals for example. (seven springs)

Why do many kids bicycles' pedals not rotate freely in reverse direction?

Nash R

I have to buy a kids bicycle (20"). I noticed that pedals in many of these bicycles do not rotate freely in reverse direction. Is that a feature or a bug? It's useful to have them rotate freely so that you can easily bring to them to starting position when you're just starting your ride.

Answer
As others have noted that style of brake is known as a 'coaster' brake and is very common with bicycles designed for younger kids. It operates much like a drum brake in that when operated by pedalling backwards small internal plates are pressed against the internal shell of the rear hub. Kids bicycles have coaster brakes because smaller children for the most part do not have enough hand strength or have not developed enough coordination to operate a hand brake that you would see on most adult or larger kids bikes. Yet they do need to be able to stop, hence the coaster brake. On larger kids bikes -- with 20" wheels or BMX style frames -- you will often see a combination of a front hand brake with a coaster brake. This is sort of an inbetween bike, if you will, designed to allow the developement of the hand strength and coordination necessary to operate a normal hand brake.

What is the best kind of comfort bike?

Cap'n Salt

I'm 14, and 4 foot 11. So, I need something that I can reach the pedals on [but, not a little kid's bike D:]

I want a good bike for just riding for fun [hence, comfort bike] I've been looking at Schwinns and Electras. I have to buy it myself... I get $25 a week from my parents, I'd like to get the bike as soon as possible...

Any suggestions?
I like the Raleigh Circa I3. Is that a good one?

Answer
Cap'n

They make bikes in different frame sizes, to fit all riders. If you but your bike at Walmart.... They will have a one size fits all bike that will be too tall for you. You need to get the proper size frame for your height. If you settle for too small of a bike frame it is your error. You now know better.

I am going on holiday to Majorca soon, and was wondering if anyone knows if there are restrictions on rentals?

I am 17 without a driving licence if that makes any difference?

Thanks for your answers.
Also, is it any different why hiring a quad?

Answer
You won't be able to hire anything in Spain without a driving licence. The law has tightened here in Spain because of the high level of accidents. Just two years ago kids used to go on their bikes without helmets, but not now. If they get caught and can't pay the fines the bikes get confiscated. I'm not certain about quads, but if they come in the same category as a car, then you will need to be 25 years old to hire one.

Holiday in Wales - Treco Park Kiln Park?

Hi I have recently wanted to go to these two holiday parks in South Wales. They are called Trecco Park, Kiln Park if anybody can tell me some information about them such as, is the food good, good / bad swimming pool, cost of most things there is it a good place to stay. We will defiantly be going to stay in a stationary caravan not a tent or portable caravan, what is the accommodation like? I have a 13 / 14 year old daughter and a 10 year old daughter do you think they would enjoy the park. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hope the hear from you!

Answer
Hi! I can't believe you asked. I went to Kiln Park years ago and it was GREAT! I know it was some time back but I had an amazing time. I can't say much about Trecco as I haven't been there but Kiln was excellent.

I remember Kiln as I was with my friends and we did all sorts. They have evening entertainment and a cabaret, loads to do (activities) and the beach is within walking distance. They do bar / nightclub nights almost every night and the crowd is generally quite friendly. They have a small convenience shop (which accepts credit cards) and though there are a few places to eat, the best and most economical food is to make your own. Every stationary caravan has a small kitchen. The convenience store can be a little pricier than your own regular convenience store or supermarket so you might find it better to take a trip down to Tescos or something before you get there.

The staff are friendly and if you go to the shows / cabarets and talent contests within the park, it's free of charge but if you want to do activities like hiring a surf board or quad bike, you'd have to speak to a local company who would then organise that for a charge. I'm not sure if your ten year old daughter is too old for this but they also have a guy dressed in a teddy bear costume (my friends terrorised him!). He was very friendly until my mate jumped him and then this angry bear started chasing my friend around the restaurant - it was hilarious (but I guess you had to be there).

I believe that both holiday parks are owned and operated by the same company. I won a talent contest at a different holiday park (called Pendine) and the prize was a short break at Kiln and a chance to take part in the grand final. If there is something your daughters (or indeed yourself or your wife) are brilliant at, take part in the contest. Even if nothing comes to mind, do it - it'll be a laugh!

Though you do get some kids that can be pests, I think you'd get them anywhere you go. My verdict: recommended!

I came across these sites on the net so you might want to do a little more research and even ring them and ask for brochures:

http://www.parkdeanholidays.co.uk/wales-holidays/trecco-bay/trecco-bay-holiday-park.htm

I hope you and your family have a good time.

If the kids are around 12-14 what is the best jobs that they can do to help out in their community and environment if we don't live in or near a neighborhood?

Answer
You mean you live on a farm? You have no neighbors at all? The nearest town is miles away? And you are home schooled and therefore never interact with other kids?

I suspect not.

NetAid has programs specifically for students in North America who want to help in the developing world. NetAid is now a part of MeryCorps
http://www.netaid.org
Many kids get involved with NetAid as individuals, then start a group at school to get other kids involved.

TakingIT Global is another resource for young people in the USA who want to do something to affect the situation positively in developing countries
www.takingitglobal.org/

http://www.change.org can help you know what causes are out there and how you can get involved with them.

You can also type in your city or zip code into:
VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org
Idealist, http://www.idealist.org
CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com
Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org
http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/
ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

You can also look for ways to change your own family's practices regarding the environment: do you compost? do you have a garden? do you use your own cloth bags when you go to the grocery or other shopping instead of paper or plastic? have you replaced some of your light bulbs with energy-saving ones? do you put on a sweater when you are cold instead of turning up the heat? do you turn off the water while you are brushing your teeth? do you ride your bike or walk or take mass transit instead of always riding in a car? do you turn off the TV when you aren't watching it? do you unplug things when they are not in use?

How does this sound as a rental cover letter?

Chris M

We recently toured an apartment we really like, however we recently had to short sale our home to move out of state for work. It was suggested that we write a cover letter. Please let me know if this sounds ok without sounding desperate (I've taken out info such as town, names, etc for privacy):

Thank you for taking the time to allow us to view your lovely townhome at XXX America Street in Certain City, USA. We have been searching for quite awhile for the perfect three bedroom in Certain City, and feel that we would very happy in the one you are offering. Along with this letter, please find our completed applications and current pay stubs. Since applications can give a very generic overview of possible tenants, please allow us to tell you a bit more about our family:

We are a family of five who recently made a big move to Second State from First State! Ryan graduated from Big University in the spring of last year with a degree in elementary education and, with the job market not being so great, decided to apply for positions out of state as well as in state. He ended up landing a job at Awesome Elementary in Certain City and we packed our belongings and moved up here in July of last year. Our intention was to settle in Certain City, however we were very limited in our time and choices when selecting our first apartment and ended up in Another City. We like Another City, however we still wish to be in Certain City. With Ryan working in the Certain City community and Sophia working in A Closeby Town, we feel it would limit our commute time and allow us to gain more family time. It will also be convenient to be closer to the commuter rail as Ryan will be starting his masterâs program at Another University this summer. With our current lease coming to an end, we feel this is the perfect time to move into the city and community weâve grown to love in the past year.

As previous homeowners, you can be assured that we will respect and care for your home as if it were our own. Being a very active family, we also feel that your location is perfect for us, being in close proximity downtown and also on a street that we feel comfortable allowing the kids to ride bikes on.

We also wanted to point out a few things from our application. Sophia is a kitchen designer currently working part time. As of June, she will be going full time and her income will increase to $900/week. If needed, we can provide a letter from her boss stating this. We also wanted to point out the fact that we recently had to short sale our home in First State. With the amount of foreclosures in our area, our home depreciated in value almost $100,000 and it was a last option for us to sell to move up here for Ryanâs career. Please know that, while we realize this may be a red flag, we have never been late on our rent and could provide proof of that. We would also be willing to give a security deposit or pay a little more per month in rent to make you feel more comfortable with us. We really love your home and would be willing to discuss any possible ideas and hope that you will find us to be suitable candidates for your beautiful unit.

Thank you for your consideration,
(our names)
The last paragraph is included because the short sale has affected our credit, and they will see it on our report, so we'd like to address it beforehand. It is saying that, in spite of the short sale, we can afford the rent and would be willing to pay an additional deposit to ease their minds. We also wanted to explain the situation a bit - we didn't short sale because we could no longer afford the home, we HAD to sell the home due to moving out of state for a job and after it being on the market for a year, had to go to a short sale to be done with it.

Answer
That last paragraph of yours is a red flag paragraph.

You sound as though you need to convince them that you can afford their rent, which suggests that perhaps you can't.

Sorry, but it doesn't work for me - there's a 'fakeness' about it.

How to balance a Schwinn conversion bike trailer/jogging stroller?

I just purchased a bike trailer and I can't get my bike to stay up while putting the kids in it. I thought maybe the front wheel was supposed to be on and it did help with support perfectly, but after looking it up it's only supposed to be used for the jogging stroller. How can I balance my bike while strapping the kids into the trailer?

Answer
Have you tried just lying the bike down on the left side, it would be better then knocking it over.

What's the best bicycle for my kids to learn to ride without training wheels?

Gina W

My husband says we should get a lighter weight bike for my daughter but I think that would be even more likely to fall over. Is there a brand of bike that has a low center of gravity or something similar that would make it easier to learn to ride? She's 6 and has a rather heavy "Cool Ride" by Dynacraft.

Answer
Your husband is right - a lighter bike would be easier to balance on: less weight = less work to balance. With a heavy bike she has to balance her weight plus the bike. Unfortunately though, they don't really make lightweight bikes for kids - they all seem to be horribly heavy.

A low center of gravity might help a bit, but you're not going to find a bike like that - all the weight goes into the structure, and anyway, the heaviest thing she's balancing is herself - the bike is only a minor part of the weight.

What you may want to do is get a 'balance bike'. These bikes train the child to balance - they have no pedals and the kid runs the bike along. The idea is to get the child to pick his/her feet up and start to learn to balance. After that, you can buy her a regular bike and she'll already have the balancing skill.

What age do kids normally learn to ride a bike without training wheels?

kids bike age 6 image

Jazmyn

My daughter is almost 7 and doesn't know how and is scared she will fall. I'm just trying to figure out if she is behind other kids.

Answer
It is just fine that kids are learning at 4 or 5, but 7 is not too old either. There are so many factors, most of which are exposure and opportunity, that come into play. The avid rider's kids may ride much more often than someone else's so that one kid has 40 hours on a bike by age 4 when it takes another child to age 7 to get 40 hours. My main point is not to be concerned with being behind; many kids learn up to age 9, with the average age being around 6.
If her fear is really preventing her from trying, suit her up with helmet, elbow and knee pads. Tap the pads while on her so that she can know what it feels like. Be silly about tapping the pads, like it hurt your finger or something.

Would you rather parents be blissfully ignorant or paranoid of dangers?

Victor

In the world today, information travels fast, extremely fast. We know that children are killed, kidnapped, murdered, etc from big things to small things. We know the story of a child (one child out of millions) who was kidnapped from a school. We also know of the dangers and crimes everywhere around us. We now know everything! All this knowledge should help us make better rational choices about our children, right?

Well, some parents do make rational and good decisions for their children. The rest? Mass paranoia. Because of this knowledge, a lot of parents nowadays are paranoid of everything and puts their kids in a bubble making sure their kids do nothing.

Lots of kids are loosing their childhood because because their parents just are afraid of knowing what can happen to their kids. Even letting the kids bike around the neighborhood (let a lone letting them walk a mile to school) is dangerous because some mean person will kidnap them!!

Was it better before, when we didn't know about the kidnappings five states away or is it better now that we know everything out there - every danger no matter how small or rare?

Answer
I think this whole "stranger danger" thing is blown way out of proportion. Child abductions and molestations have sunk to an all time
low and they are becoming less and less. I think its wrong that some parents mainly "paranoid" Moms teach their kids to "fear" strangers. 99.9% of strangers would never harm a child, or is even sexually attracted to it for that matter.

I was at my friends grandson's t-ball game and he is 5 turning 6 this May and these\ 2 women sitting next to me started getting into the whole stranger danger thing amongst themselves because one of the teams didn't have the boys names on the back of their jerseys and they were like "yeah that is probably so some wacko or whatever can't just go out and call a kids name or whatever" and she used the name Matthew because that was her kids name. I was thinking to myself, "oh my god get over your paranoid self." That had nothing to do with stranger danger by the way. Some of the teams (because its t-ball) just didn't have the kids names on the back of their jerseys. I told this right to these 2 dimwits. They said like 3 things that got me to turn my head and chime in because of the stupid stuff they were saying. You know the parents of the kids were at the game for crying out loud and everybody trusts one another there. You get some of these "paranoid" Moms and just women in general but mainly Moms and they go so over the top with the stranger danger thing. Its not fair to the kid that these Moms and even some Dads, but mostly Moms make them fear strangers. It just isn't right. Kids approach strangers all the time and once they talk to them and get to know them, they aren't strangers anymore are they? II ts like ok you don't want your freaking kids to get to know anybody because you are this paranoid and un-trusting? Even my friend agreed with me that these 2 ladies were "over the top." Some of these Moms who are this way need to come to grips with reality and that is that the
chances of their kids getting abducted is slim to none. The problem is, the news just over-does it. They take 1 abduction and then drag it on for months and then another one and drag it on for months, so it makes it seem like there is nothing but child abductions. Damn, there are more important things that the news channels need to be showing. Like I said, child abductions have gotten less and less and soon there won't even be any.

I would rather parents be right in middle (balance is the keyword here) and teach their kids when they are young like age 4. As soon as they can talk and they know right from wrong you just give them the whole "don't touch me in the no no spot" talk. Don't teach them to fear anything and that includes strangers. Strangers are people and don't you want your children and your kids to know people? Damn, do you want em to be sad little loners becaase you are paranoid and too over-protective? Now I just noticed you said dangers and at first I thought it said strangers. Well same topic for the most part. Yeah, I don't think parents should be blissfully ignorant nor should they be paranoid and shelter to an extreme. Kids are going to talk to strangers plain and simple and if you teach them to fear strangers, then that makes you a bad parent, or parents, but like I said, the paranoia tends to be "ALL MOM". They need to be able to experience things first-hand. That is how they learn things. Parents teach their kids everything they know, but when they aren't at home and they are out and about, they are constantly learning things that "they" didn't teach them, or maybe something that "they" did, but with a slightly different spin on it. Basically children, kids and teens have to experience things firsthand for themselves too, so they can get their own take on things. They learn things from other people other than their parents and that 9 times out of 10 is a good thing. They need to be able to survive when they get out there into the real world and when they're on their own and how is that going to happen if they are over-sheltered and over-protected? Simple, it isn't folks. Like I said, balance is key in everything you do in life and that also goes with the raising of kids.

Concerned people that see kids going as fast as they can without helments on, on four wheelers, call the police. The police come out and just look and do nothing. Also the kids suddenly go into their houses.

Answer
Yeah, you're in the wrong section. This is a Cycling section. 2 Wheels with pedals.

Cops don't always let this by, but in some cases they do. I've seen multiple 5-8 year olds ride a bike without a helmet in a park which is right across a police station. Now some cops just don't always bust people when they see something wrong. I once road on a sidewalk to get through a intersection on my bike and a police officer just starred and took a grin at me. He knew i saw him, yet i still didn't get a ticket.

If you are so concerned, maybe you should just call and make a complaint the next time you see them

jamil w

My mom refuses to buy me a good quality bmx bike because i usually break them because they are not good quality. Shes not cheap because she just bought me an ipod touch. does anyone know where can i get a job at 15?

Answer
First off:

Your mom is just like every other good mom on the face of this planet. She doesn't want to let you get involved in something dangerous or expensive in hospital bills. She may also be concerned that you will become one of those dead beat hippy bmxers that wont be able to take care of her when she gets old. Either way she doesn't realize that limiting your physical activities to jockish teem sports increases her chances of raising a complete dutche bag.

So
Second of all:

Tell your mom you don't want an Ipod, and beg for the bmx bike. To sway the argument hit her with bargans from the internet like these:

http://rochester.craigslist.org/bik/1237706907.html

http://rochester.craigslist.org/bik/1236439631.html

http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/bik/1256971506.html

All of which will beat ther F out of buying a brand new bike from a bike shop or dans

but if shes to prissy for a deal just go for dans and make sure you get a complete where the frame is 100% 4130 chromo.

http://www.danscomp.com/serve.php?serve=html&html=bikes.html

Lastly:

thousands of immigrant kids died back in the late 18 to early 1900s so you wouldn't have to. so enjoy school, and take it seriously. but if you need some spare bux start asking for cash for holidays and birth days. You can also start working extra hard around the house to guilt trip the parents into doling out a bigger allowance.

so stay committed to the cause and see if your friends can help you get into bmx if they can.

Do we need to start home schooling or sending our kids to private schools?

clhen37

Judging from all the grammatical errors I see on this site I think we should.Spelling errors, punctuation errors and improper word usage is rampant here.I sometimes think they are speaking a different language!!!
Our government schools are ruining our children's quality of education.

Answer
While I'm all for homeschooling (I homeschool my own son and teach homeschooled kids), I wouldn't say that government schools are to blame for poor communication skills. Rather, uninvolved parents and a societal shift toward pawning off the parenting of our kids to "experts" is more to blame.

When I was a kid, I wouldn't have even considered not doing my homework, or doing it to the best of my ability, as I would have disappointed my parents and lost every liberty I held dear. (You know, the ability to hang out at the mall or go bike riding.) My parents checked my assignments every night and kept in contact with my teachers. If I started slacking, privileges were pulled immediately and I didn't have a life outside of getting my grades up.

Today, there are still conscientious parents, but they are becoming fewer and farther between. There seems to be a general attitude that since teachers are the "experts", they should just be relied upon to parent the kids, too. (However, let a public school teacher try to discipline one of the little darlings, and wow...talk about fireworks. Parents become VERY involved at that point!)

Between uninvolved and ignorant parents (ignorant of their children's actual behavior, that is), ludicrous government restrictions and regs, and kids who just plain don't give a rat's behind about their education, teachers are doing everything they can...but they're people too, not miracle workers. If the kids don't want to learn, and the parents don't enforce their studies, there's not a lot that any school - public, private, or home - can do.

What is the best barefoot starter shoe?

I understand this could be a little misleading but let's just put it this way. I want to buy a pair of barefoot shoes because I think they might be better for me than the running shoes that I wear now, which are just basic New Balance running shoes. Which are also 5 plus years old. I know I don't want the toe shoes. I find those ridiculous. A few of my family members have Merrell walking shoes and they love them. I've tried them on too and I also like them a lot. So I looked into their barefoot shoes and they have mixed reviews of course. I have also heard about this vivobarefoot brand which seems nice even though from the looks of it you're paying for foam. I haven't seen them in person so maybe the pictures are misleading. Also I see New Balance has a version too. Anyway here is my situation. I love lightweight shoes and the majority of my running will be on a trail in the woods that is basically small pebble. Nothing too rough. I haven't thought about running on concrete. I live in a city so sometimes I run the sidewalks but I don't plan on doing that too often. Other than running I also ride my bike in which case I also like a lightweight show. So overall, can anybody recommend a good barefoot shoe for me? Brand and model if you can, and maybe a good place to buy online. I can barely find any in stores and the only pair I did find were Merrells which fit quite well in a size 10. Thanks in advance

Answer
There is only one barefoot solution: barefoot.

Wearing any kind of footwear is not being barefoot, so dont kid yourself.

What can I do to get information about a Western Flyer road bike?

dannycrous

Answer
There are no online resources to give you this info but I can give you a hint.

Western Flyer midweight bikes (with wider tires, fenders, and maybe a tank) were made by Murray in the US while the kids bikes and lightweight models were made in West Germany, Poland, and perhaps Hungary by the same company that made Derby, Executive, and President bicycles. There were also some made by AMF in the US.

So, look on the headbadge and see where it was made then post it- preferably with a picture of the right side (the chain side)- and I'll edit my answer.

Organ Donation
Picture this. A young girl, like you or me, cycling down a deserted road in broad daylight. A 4wd motor vehicle comes up behind her and knocks her flying 6 feet in the air and 17 feet across the tarmac. Her head hits the ground and her brain starts to swell. She was left there as the offender drove away. Soon after, a member of the public helps and an ambulance was called. Bike crushed, helmet shattered into a million pieces and a young girl, dying on the side of the road. Her brain dies and her heart slows to a stop. She was dead⦠The ambulance officer tried everything but as a last resort, he gives her one last shot of adrenaline. They got a pulse. She was alive.
In hospital, alive solely because of life support, the young girl lay lifelessly on the hospital bed, with her loving family surrounding her. The neurosurgeon confirmed that she was 100% brain dead and explained what that meant to the family with two small children. He explained that nothing could be done to save this girl, but said that she was perfect for organ donation. He asked if they would consider, and they said yes.
What is it? What is organ donation? Well, do you need your heart when youâre dead? No you donât, but someone else might. Organ donation is a way of trying to help the sick and giving your organs could save or help up to 50 people. People every day die of liver failure or kidney failure, yet so many people die in the right criteria but still end up getting buried or cremated with perfectly good, useful organs.
Every year, hundreds of people are on the waiting list for organs. Not all of them survive. Theyâre waiting to die, and their families are waiting for the day when the nurses say âIâm sorry, they're not going to make it.â The little hope they have, is hoping that someone will die so they can have another shot at life. They need hearts, lungs, livers and kidneys. But as only a small percentage of New Zealanders donate, sadly, they wonât all make it.
How many New Zealanders die every year? A lot. If so many people die, why arenât many organs donated? Because, only certain situations can organs be used, because your organs have to be alive and have blood still pumping through them. For instance; if you die inside and been on life support, organs can usually be donated, but if someone dies outside hospital, and has not been on a life support machine, internal organs cannot be used for organ donation. However, corneas, heart valves, and skin or bone may still be donated. Why canât they be donated? Because, for organs to be donated, they have to be alive. If your brain is dead, it doesnât necessarily mean that everything else is. Your organs need to stay alive if they are going to be transplanted into someone else. People are depending on the people who tick the box and die in the right situation to live. Well, not so much anymore.
With all our new technology, medical experts have introduced live donors. Living people donating one of their organs. Well a kidney or piece of liver anyway. Firstly, they will match the blood type and they can undergo the operation of getting a piece of a vital organ and donating it to a much loved friend or family member.
When a loved one dies, and their organs can be donated, a lot of people are still in great shock. They get asked if they would consider donating and if they say yes, they just leave it at that (well the family). But the OPTN (organ procurement and transplant network) has a huge job. They need to search for matching recipients. They manage the Australia-New Zealand organ donation database of all the patients in Australia and New Zealand. They must match the donor and recipient by blood type and tissue type.
After they matched up the donor to the recipients, they had around about 6-10 hours to get the organs into the recipient. The young girl had only three major scars. A âYâ shape. She donated all her organs and saved six lives.
Although not everyone is suitable for organ donation, I think everyone should consider it. Itâs a way that we can save lives even after our own is over. That young girl, Ayla, was influenced by her cousin who was just our age when she died of leukaemia. No-one would donate for her. I think everyone should talk to their mum, dad or friends about organ donation. Itâs an amazing thing and we should all think and try to help change the future.

Answer
I don't know of any bike helmet that would scatter like that.

Here are some facts that may make your speech even
more interesting.

In the USA:
1)When someone is to be declared brain dead, testing is done
to prove this and two doctors outside of the Transplant Team
(with no connection to it) would have to sign papers stating
this is so. The patient would be kept on life support to keep
oxygen and blood reaching the organ.
2)If someone wants to be an organ donor after they die, In
the USA, they should tell their parents or relatives about it...
as in some areas, they relative could stop the donation of all organs.
Some relatives don't want their loved ones to donate organs
when they are brain dead, they want them to wait until they
remove all the life support and see if the heart stops beating.
This is the only way they know for certain their loved one
has passed on. However, waiting till the heart stops beating
means the organ may become more damaged because
of lack of blood and oxygen reaching it...but, if the life support
is started right away..it still could be used for transplant.
3)Most Transplant Centers recommend living donors to be
18 years of age or older. Some exceptions are made if
a relative wants to donate younger than this because
another relative need to live..The transplant team and the
parents have to approve of it.
However, there is an evaluation process that the
recipient goes through (of seeing many doctors and
having much testing done) to be placed on the Transplant
list. A Living donor is also required to go through a similar
process in order to give their organ. Even though a
recipient has a living donor, they still have to go through
the process to be placed on the list because a donor can
back out of giving the organ at any time.
4)Different organs have different time periods that they can
be out of the body and transplanted:
Heart 4-6 hours
Lungs 4-6 hours
Pancreas 12-24 hours
Liver 12-24 hours
Intestine 12-24 hours
Kidneys 48-72 hours
Just because someone is willing to give their organ(after death)
doesn't mean that the organ will be used. The Transplant Team is
notified an organ has become available. The surgeons
check the organ to see what condition it is in and can refuse
it if it is not suitable for transplantation. Remember, the organ
is not new, it has been in someone elses body and may have
growths, tumors, or be damaged in some other ways by
hereditary conditions, disease, etc.

Best wishes on your speech

I wanna go to new zealand for my internship but is it true?

vanhalen

I have chosen new zealand because i've always wanted to go there.. My dream when i was a child was going to Australia or new zealand.
When my friends knew about it, they told me that new zealand is real boring and that Australia is much better. They said that they been there and that it was awful. I don't believe them but who am i to know? ive never been there. I saw videos and pictures about it and i noticed big cities and stuff.
But i live in the Netherlands so i don't think it would be worse huh?

Answer
i guess it really depends what you re into.
New Zealand is very, very beautiful, and is the dreamland for a particular type of person. there are alot of different landscapes and climates rolled into one small place. you can see mountains, volcanoes, lakes, glaciers, fjords, beaches, forest etc etc. so basically, if you like skiing, hiking, surfing, biking or are just generally an outdoorsy kind of person you ll love NZ.
the people are pretty much the same on both sides of the Tasman but Australia is bigger, warmer and has larger cities. if you are really more interested in living in a vibrant city id say go to melbourne or sydney, that said, Wellington and Auckland are ok too,

Would you rather parents be blissfully ignorant or paranoid of dangers?

kids bike age 3
on Kids Bike - And more Kids Bike Factory information
kids bike age 3 image

How much has life changed over the years for kids?

Forever_Lo

In my opinion kids and young teens deal with so much in this generation. Sometimes it's almost unbelievable what some of them go through. Do you think the amount of pressure and/or stress on younger people has grown over the years? Your opinion?

Answer
i love this question so much! i grew up back in the nineties. And when i reflect on my childhood, i just smile. Life was so much more simpler! I could just ride on my bike everywhere and be home to watch Mr. Roger's on tv at 3. We had a movie store in town and a candy store! My grandma mostly watched me.

Now life is GO GO GO! People are stressed, anxious, angry, depressed. It shows through our television and just our whole lifestyle. The shows aren't fun for kids anymore, everything has to be educational! I believe that kids should grow up with fun not a strict schedule! I miss the nineties! The eighties were a fun time, too as my parents say.

This is only coming from a kid, but i hope you get what i mean. I'm 15 now but i feel like people my age can probably answer this question the best. i want life to slow down a bit. less stress, less worries, more fun. you only live once!

god bless,
brittney xoxo

What route should I take to drive through all 48 states without using the interstate system?

best kids bikes canada
on Snow Bike Recalled | My TV20 Detroit News, Weather, Entertainment and ...
best kids bikes canada image

Trey C

Me and a friend are planning on motor-biking across the country with the goal of at least entering all 48 contiguous states. We will be riding motor-bikes that will only be able to achieve about 30-40 miles per hour, so we will need to avoid the interstate system. We will have plenty of time to complete the trip, so no worries about time constraints. Anyone that could suggest a possible route would be a great help. Thanks and have a great day.

Answer
You've really put a lot of thought into this, haven't you?

Okay, sorry, look, you're talking about a landmass that is 3,000 miles by 1,000 miles (4800km x 1600km). The interstates were built because it was so difficult to construct a route across the nation.

No joke, in 1919, Lt. Dwight D. Eisenhower was part of a military experiment to see how hard it was to drive from Washington, D.C to San Francisco. It took him more than two months. When he took-over Germany 25 years later and saw the Autobahn, it was, literally, a revelation. When he became president, he built the interstates.

It is extremely difficut to hit all of the lower 48. I've moved cross-country about six times and driven cross-country more than a dozen times, and there are states I've never entered. In my entire life, I've known about a half-dozen people who have even claimed to have been in all 48, and I don't know that I really believed all of them. (Odd point, the three who basically proved it to me by showing me their travel logs were all Canadians).

Also, if you're doing this on scooters/mopeds or something similar, realize that, in a lot of the western U.S., the next gas station is 60+ miles away. My cycle has a six-gallon gas tank and I've been on reserve more than once. I knew a guy in Utah who tried to ride a scooter to Mardi Gras. He killed the scooter (literally, last day was done in the back of a friendly person's pickup) to make it across the Texas border so that he could at least say he'd gotten an entire state away from Utah.

Some suggestions:
. Buy a Rand-McNally type road atlas and study it, in depth, before you do any other planning
. Look for the scenic routes
. Realize that different states have different helmet laws
. Realize that you may not be able to get scooters repaired in a lot of places. Travel with a support truck or use some brand with a broad suport base in the U.S., such as Honda. Honestly, it would probably be less headache to do this on bicycles than on Vespas. Why not get real motorcycles and do the interstates at least part of the trip?
. Don't get hung-up on hitting all 48, or you will probably miss some really oustanding sights. F'rinstance, you'll want to see south Florida, but that will add 1,000 miles to your trip. California Highway One will take a day or three on scooters, and you will only transit about a quarter of the length of the state.
. Weather. March in Texas is pleasant. Other parts of the states are receiving six inches of snow. North Texas may be receiving six inches of snow.

Here are some roads that may be useful:
. 93/91/89 through Montano, Idaho, Utah, Arizona goes through a lot of scenic places
. Forget Route 66. Much of what exists is under interstates. Most of it goes (actually, "went")through very boring places.
Oh man, I'm having a hard time finding non-interstate routes that traverse more than one or two states. Seriously, talk to people and put some thought into this. I think you'll want something that can do more than 40 miles per day for any real travel in the U.S.

@MrDanger -- If you'd read what I wrote, you'd realize I'm trying to tell the Asker to use some other form of transportation. But anyway, I know people who have bicycled 89/85 from Canada to Mexico. I've ridden and driven most of it, and for most of it, it's a slow, pleasant drive. Just 'cause you drive like a jomoke doesn't mean everyone is a discourteous law-breaker. Speeding fools kill kids in schoolzones all the time, where the speedlimit is only 15MPH.

What are some places to see from toronto to niagara falls?

HEYHEY

Hi there,

I am planning a trip to see Niagara Falls with some friends from outside Canada. We are driving from Toronto, and I was wondering what interesting places there are to see along the way!

Maybe nice farms or stores! If anyone knows points of interest along the way, I would love to hear some!

Thanks! :)

Answer
If this is going to be a day trip, your best bet is to just get there and "do" Niagara Falls. There is enough there to keep you busy all day. There is the Maid of the Mist (do it now while you can, this attraction is in jeopardy), the Whirlpool Rapids, lots of trails, shops, Clifton Hill (if you have kids - this area is a bit cheesy with its wax museums, etc.), there's a butterfly conservatory and an aviary, a tower with a restaurant to see Niagara Falls from above, the flower clock, there's a really great magic show at one of the hotels, etc.

Be sure to take a drive along the Niagara River to Niagara-on-the-Lake - there are several stunning places to stop and see the views.

Along the QEW on the way to Niagara, you will pass several wineries where you can stop and take a wine tasting tour (check for times in advance), as well as several fresh fruit stands with plenty of in-season, farm fresh fruits and veggies. There is the wine and cheese festival in St. Catharines and the Peach Festival in Winona, depending on what time of year you are planning your trip.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is a great place to start or finish the day with its fine restaurants, artist's galleries and quaint, interesting shops. You can even just go to the grocery store, grab some fresh buns, cold cuts, sliced cheese and some fruit and have a picnic lunch by the lake.

If you're planning on spending a few days in the area, there is Marineland (though its getting terrible reviews lately so may not be worth the time), a few small private zoos, and of course across-the-border shopping. Depending on the age range of guests you are going with, you could stay at one of the hotels with access to one of several indoor water parks. There is also a casino and shows.

Along the way, I would find time to stop in to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington for a day (if your guests are the outdoorsy types). They have everything from rose gardens to marsh boardwalks, an arboretum and nature trails in the woods. Bring some sunflower seed and watch the chickadees feed right from your hand!

There is Wild Waterworks just off the QEW in Hamilton - a huge wave pool and water slides and tube rides. (again, depending on the age range of your guests). There is also a very long waterfront trail for walking, biking or roller blading. Someone already mentioned the Aviation Museum at Hamilton Airport (which is a bit out of the way).

Far out of the way is the African Lion Safari (in Cambridge). It is expensive, but worth visiting at least once in your lifetime. The kids will have a lot of fun. (they have a nice splash pad and water climbers, so make sure the kids bring their bathing suits).

Check out the Tourism Ontario website for other points of interest and HAVE FUN!

I've been looking around, and there doesn't seem to be a rain cover for my kid's bike seat, so the kid is going to get soaked next time it rains and we're out for a bike ride.

Its been suggested to get a trailer which will be under cover, but that's not really an option since I can't get through the gates near where we live with a trailer behind my bike.

Answer
I don't think one exists but how about the old school rain poncho that the kid can wear and it will also drape right over the seat. If you can't find one small enough then maybe modify one to fit. Good Luck.

How can I get drops of spray paint off of a pair of sneakers?

parle58

I was spray painting my kid's bike with my favorite sneakers on (terrible idea) and the spray cap exploded and I got paint drops on the leather part of the sneakers. What are a few options to get the paint off? I've already tried detergent. What are some other options? Thanx in advance!

Answer
Get some nail polish remover and apply it to a cotton ball. Gently rub it on the spray paint splatter. It should get rid of the stain. - You may have to go through several cottons balls, depending on the amount of spray paint.

How to get a Six pack and biceps?

was wondering what the best way is to get a six pack without going to the gym (I don't mean without exercise, just without having to drive to the gym). I am a skinny kid and it seems that with a little bit of effort I can easily get a six pack, but I don't know how. Can you guys help? What sort of exercises are best to do? What type of diet? etc...
Also, how do you build arm strength?

Secrets for better ab results: First you want to breath in. Then you want to simultaneously flex your abs hard while breathing out. Here is the trickâ¦you want to purse your lips and make it a bit hard to force the air out. It should take you about 5-10 seconds to force all of the air out. As you let the air out of your lungs your abs should have the ability to flex harder and harder. This will it teaches your body and your mind how to show six pack without having to flex.

Only do these exercises once every other day. Only when you are resting then you can gain strength and do the breathing exercise everday.
