why do people ride bikes on the road?

thank you

Answer
Oh no...not this ridiculous question - AGAIN. Because a bicycle (by law) in all 50 states & Canada is defined as a "vehicle". Vehicles belong on the streets - pedestrians belong on the sidewalk. The first paved roads in America (after the Civil War) were built for bicycles. Because it's actually safer for a cyclist to be on the streets vs. the sidewalks. People pulling out of driveways & alleyways do NOT look for cyclists on the sidewalk. Because (as a cyclists) we would have to yield to ALL pedestrians. Because in many parts of the country - it's the LAW! Sidewalks in the 'burbs may be OK for a kid to learn on. Once past the age of 12 or so - everyone should ride their bicycle on the streets. In California - it's against the law to be on the sidewalk - period - suburbs or in the city (business district). Where I live - here's the law word for word...Copy & Paste:

300.347. Riding Bicycle On Sidewalks, Limitations - Motorized Bicycles Prohibited
(1) No person shall ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk within a business district; (2) Whenever any person is riding a bicycle upon a sidewalk, such person shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give audible signal before overtaking and passing such pedestrian; (3) No person shall ride a motorized bicycle upon a sidewalk.

And a bicycle doesn't "dose" anything. A "dose" is a measure - as in a "dose" of medicine. A road bike (with thinner, taller tires) "does" go faster because the tires roll easier with less resistance & the bike is just plain lighter in weight. Road bikes can achieve speeds of 30 to 35mph (on flat land) with the right person on it. Road bikes are the epitome of speed, performance & technology in today's cycling world. Why do you think this type of bike is ridden by all in races like the Tour de France?
