Answer
Breakfast: 8:30am
Get Dressed, brush teeth, etc: 9am
9:30-10:30 play
10:30 snack
10:30-12:30 play, read, go outside (weather permitting)
12:30 lunch
1-3 nap
3:00 snack
3:00-5:00 play
5-5:30, tv, movie
5:30: dinner
6-7 play
7: bathtime
7:30 snack
7:30-8 reading, quiet time, brush teeth
8:30 bedtime

some things to do with your 2 year old:
-coloring
-puzzles
-art activities
-outside: swings, balls, slide, bike
-reading
-play kitchen
-play dollhouse, barbies
-dance to music

*if she doesnt listen, do time out, if she throws a toy, and u say no we dont do that sweetie, if she does it again, time out for 2-3 minutes
*if she throws a tantrum, ignore it, let her cry, even in public, there are tons of moms out there doign errands, that have small children, or had small children, they understand

-sign ur saughter up for a dance or gymnastic class
-have a playdate with other kids her age
-sign her up for preschool 3 mornings a week, not daycare, but a preschool mon, wed, fri from 9-12 sort of thing
*preschool at that age will teach sharing, listening, starting friendships, etc, it might be good for your daughter

-schedule is best for children because it helps with discipline as well as teachign them time constraints and that they dont have all day to just lounge around and do nothing.
it helps with focus to, and as they grow older it will help because they will know what comes next throughout the day with no unexpectedness

-also, schedules have to be altered for other activities and errands, or if u enroll her in a class of a preachool, if she goes to preschool, they might be served lunch, so at 12:30 she'll just need a snack, but continue on with nap at 1...
if u have a playdate, u may need to move thigns around ,be flexible, but make sure u have some solid routine

What are fun things to do with a kid your babysitting?

I will be babysitting a 5 year old all summer long. What are fun things to do with him? He is very energetic :) thanks.

Answer
My 6 yr old loves video games, although, we try to keep that to a minimum. The swimming pool is a great idea. So is taking him/her to the park. You can go on a bike ride if he's got a bike. Also, there's tons of free activities that are offered by my local library for young kids... you might think about checking in your area for that. You can go on a scavenger hunt for things like cool leaves, sticks, stuff you find in nature then have him glue it to some construction paper after your walk to find these things. That would also be a good time for a snack and juice. You might want to ask him what he likes to do as well... get him in on it :)

Have FUN!

like all they did was ride bikes go hiking climb trees play sports (ugh think how dirty and sweaty they got!)

they swam in the sea (ugh! how knows what was in that water!)

and they always read books (ugh boring)

why didn't they go shopping? im sure theere were clothes stores back in the 40s. 50s 60s 70s 80s and 90s!

Answer
No videogames back then. I can't imagine how sucky that would be :)
And they probably didn't have any money to shop either.

When did harley davidson become a status symbol?

Nazgul

This has been going on for a while but why are so many suburban yuppies riding Harleys!? Squeaky clean leathers and dude rags with collage logos trying to look like a mean sob's.

Answer
Don't forget to include BMWs because they too have a long history of being status symbols as well, especially in the 1960s to early 1980s. In the 60s and 70s, HD and BMW were both aimed at the touring/non-sporting market, but were at opposite ends of the spectrum. BMWs were light, extremely reliable, they handled decently, the boxer engine was a 50+ year old design but they lacked serious horsepower and speed. HDs, especially the dressers, were heavy, very unreliable, poor handlers, the V twin engine was a 60+ year old design and they too lacked horsepower and speed.

The people that rode both makes were also at opposite ends of the spectrum. Many HD riders tended to be the rough and tumble tough guys, which makes since considering the poor ride quality their bikes had and the mechanical abilities the riders needed to keep their bikes going. The only mechanics that could hold a candle to them were the Brit bike riders, whose bikes were always experiencing electrical failures, especially at night when the lights would go out. BMW riders tended to be the more sharp dressed guys, which I guess makes sense considering Beemers were shaft drive and didn't leak oil. A HD or Brit bike would have left their close oil soaked. I rode a Japanese bike back then and many of the BMW riders I met were snobby (I heard the same thing from other Japanese bike riders as well). Apparently they knew their bike cost twice as much as my bike did.

The old joke back then was that you could tell how reliable a bike was by looking at the factory supplied tool kit. BMWs were the most relaible and had a very complete tool kit, Japanese bikes were fairly dependable and had so-so tool kits, Brit bikes were very unreliable and had poor tool kits and HDs were extremely unreliable and didn't even come with a tool kit.

One thing BMWs and HDs had in common was that they both cost more much more than the British or Japanese competition, which put both into a more monetary elite class, thus making them consider their bikes to be a status symbol. Today, look at how many BMW car drivers tend to turn up their noses at non-German autos, excepting the Volkswagen. Some things never end. Something HD has that most other bike builders wish they had is name recognition. Ask any grade schooler or non-riding adult to name a motorcycle brand and they will tell you "Harley". Same thing with farm equipment, as a kid or urbanite to name a tractor brand and they will answer "John Deere."

Help! My ninty dollar walmart bike makes my butt bruise! What should I do?

kids gel bike seat cover image

Annoying G

I'm going to college in a biking town. But I was scared of bike theft, and i found a bike that fits in my dad's small car. The bike was from walmart and was ninty dollars (should I worry about safety if i'm going to use if for at least 2 years?). Anyways, the seat is really really hard, and yesterday after riding for about 45 minutes, my butt cheeks(hardly considered my butt cheeks since it's so close to my vaginal area, sorry if too much info). I've seen those gel seat covers that you can put on your bike seat to make them more comfy, but I'm scared that kids at my school would just take them off my bike and steal it from me. Is there something I can do that can do that would make my bike seat more comfy for my butt, but at the same time would be hard or impossible for someone else to steal that something that changed the bike seat from me?
Also, my feet can barely touch the ground. only my toes can touch the ground, so i need something that when added on, won't add the distance from my feet to the floor too much.

Answer
The

First, your feeet should not touch the ground. When you come to a stop, your slide off the saddle and straddle the bike.

Second, cycling is an exercise. You over did it the first day in the saddle. If you did that in the gym, you shoulders and arms would feel 'bruised'. Slow, down, and get in short rides until you are both saddle and cycling fit. I am surprised that your legs aren't killing you too! It is amazing how out of shape your butt and legs get just walking around.

It is not Walmart's fault., The saddle is just fine. Padded saddles, gel pads don't help. Getting in shape will. When you ride, do not put 100% of the weight on your butt. You spread it out at contact points of the pedals, handle bars, and seat. You always keep weight on your pedals at all times.

Bicycle Seats: What do you get for your money?

Jim

Bicycle Seats: What do you get for your money?
At Nashbar and Performance Bike I see saddles for 29.95 and for 259.99. I think a saddle can be very important on long rides and I donât mind paying a little more. But what do you really get when you pay $100 or $200 dollars for a saddle? Can the gel (or foam) or covering really be different enough to make it feel better after a long ride? I've purchased bikes for less when I was a kid.

Answer
Saddles are subjective. You won't find a consensus. Some people rave about their $29 generic, while others wouldn't be caught dead on anything costing less than $150, even if it's not the most comfortable or most practical for their purpose. As for $300 saddles, there are also $900 cranksets, $2900 wheelsets, and $600 bars with integrated stems. People that have the money and the passion (or possibly ego) for the most expensive items can find a multitude from which to choose. For the average cyclist, a terrific saddle can be had for $100, and a good saddle can be had for half that. Your butt needs to be the judge. And contrary to what others may say, Brooks saddles are comfortable, though not necessarily light. The leather adds more comfort than what you can get from synthetic-covered saddles. Anyone that thinks maintaining a Brooks is difficult shouldn't own a bicycle. Both foam and "gel" padding deteriorates, often much sooner than is reasonable for an expensive saddle.

Get a road bike. You will get much more use out of it and if you keep riding who knows. Trust me Im 16 now and when I was ur age I wanted a bmx or mtn bike so I saved up and used it for bout 3 months and got bored. Then I was out riding on the road seeing who could get two top of hill first when this cyclist flew by on a trek madone. I sold the mtn bike got road bike and started racing bout 3 months later. Now I have a cross bike, track bike and two road bikes and I raceing at a pretty good level. So please dont waste time on bmx ( no offence to bmxing but most kids just ride it for few months then get bored) get road bike and ride ride ride. Maybe youll get into 2012 thats what Im goin for.

What BMX bike should I buy?

Should I buy the 2013 Sunday Spark or the 2012 Fit VH1? Please Respond. Thanks!

Answer
The Fit out-specs the Sunday, and goes for a better price, but I suggest looking into something different as the Single walled rims and unsealed front will not do you any good. Plus it has a 20" TT, which is quite small. Good luck!

@Lucky ~ Mongoose makes kids bikes, and also develops professional equipment as they do have a bmx team. Their top of the line models out there compete with many of the leading company's. Do a bit of research as any respectable biker knows that mongoose does in fact develop/sell high quality bikes.

What are the pros and cons of a Border Collie?

kids bike reviews

kids bike reviews image

Cory

I have a medium size yard.
i would take it to the park here and there.
I got 2 cats
No kids or anything like that.
the only time it would be alone is when im at school.

Answer
DON'T base your breed choice on looks, WRONG move.
Number 1; a lazy walk down to the park here and there is wrong for this breed. You have one destructive and bored border collie
Number 2; BORDER COLLIES REQUIRE LONG WALKS-TWICE DAILY TOTALLYING A MINIMUM OF 4KM DAILY WALKS AND LOADS OF PHYISCALLY AND MENTAL STIMULATION DAILY.
Number 3; Border collies need a large yard, or acreage.Medium yard is NOT suitable.

Providing enough exercise and mental stimulation. Border Collies MUST have frequent opportunities to vent their energy and to use their busy minds to do interesting things. Otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored -- which they usually express by barking and destructive chewing. Bored Border Collies are famous for chewing through drywall, ripping the stuffing out of sofas, and turning your yard into a moonscape of giant craters.

If you simply want a pet for your family, and don't have the time or inclination to take your dog running or hiking or biking or swimming, or to get involved in herding, or agility (obstacle course), or advanced obedience, or tracking, or a similar canine activity, I do not recommend this breed.
Border Collies were never intended to be simply household pets. Their working behaviors (chasing, nipping, poking, barking) are inappropriate in a normal household setting. Trying to suppress these "hardwired" behaviors, without providing alternate outlets for their high energy level, can be difficult.
Compulsive chasing and stalking. Most Border Collies are obsessed with stalking and chasing anything that moves -- children, joggers, bicycles, cars, cats, birds. Some Border Collies, unfortunately, go further than that and will seize and kill small running animals, including cats.

So not a Border Collie is NOT a bred for you.
http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/reviews/bordercollies.html
BCâs are extremely active and intelligent which is a difficult combination to live with unless you can give it a lot of exercise, attention and training. These Collies are extremely fast and agile and can be readily trained to be great competitors at agility trials. Border Collies really should be herding livestock on a farm but if this isnât possible you must substitute lots and lots of advanced obedience or agility, jogging, biking and Frisbee playing. Without lots of physical and mental activity, BCâs will become hyperactive and impossible to live with These Collies can get very destructive and bark continuously if they are left along in the yard. However if BCâs have the right owners, they can become great family dogs which are good with older children. BCâs are not a suitable dog for a novice or first-time dog owner.

Your obviously not that active from the fact you only want a dog to take to the park here and there. Most dog breed require daily walks of at least 30mintues twice daily. Alot of the herding breed do require 4km or more

If you want a pet, make sure it suited to your lifestyle

Dog breed 30mintues twice daily and a good run in fenced in yard
Cardigan Welsh Corgi
Scotch Collie
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Shetland Sheepdog
Shetland Sheepdog

Dogs that require short daily walks-Much more suited to lazy owners.
Pugs
Pugs are strong dogs with short straight legs. They need to be taken on daily walks.

Affenpinschers
Although it is an energetic and active little dog, a lot of its exercise needs can be met with indoor play, HOWEVER, like all dogs, the Affenpinscher should be taken for daily walks

Brussels Griffons
These little dogs are very active indoors, however, like all dogs, they still need to be taken for a daily walk

Chihuahua
Although it is tempting to carry these dainty creatures about; these are active little dogs, who need a daily walk. Play will take care of a lot of their exercise needs, however, as with all breeds, play will not fulfill their primal instinct to walk.

English Toy Spaniel
Play will take care of a lot of their exercise needs, however, as with all breeds, play will not fulfill their primal instinct to walk.

How long will it take for me to lose the weight?

I walk Around a whole block which is about 4 street lights( about 2-3 miles ) i wear a plastic sweat suit, 2.5 lb. weights on my ankles, sweat shorts, a sweat waist band, a hooded sweater. or i sometimes bike ride from my house to a street named lampson - dale-chapman-katella-beach blvd and back to my house. about 3-6 miles. and i sweat about half a gallon.

Answer
The following healthy living recommendations will help you if youâre trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:

*1) Burn more calories then you're consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm

Get a diet and fitness calculator that you can put on your computer or cell phone. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.

Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:
Adults: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
Teens/Children: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/exercise/weight/bmi.html

It is difficult and unhealthy to lose more than one or two pounds per week. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. If you eat 500 fewer calories per day for a week you will lose one pound. If you burn through exercise 500 more calories per day for a week you will lose one pound.

*2) Eat natural and organic foods found on earth versus something created by a corporation to make money. Eat meals in small portions throughout the day and take a good multi-vitamin supplement.

Avoid âHigh Glycemic Load Carbsâ (sugar, pastries, desserts, refined starches such as breads, pasta, refined grains like white rice; high starch vegetables such as potatoes) and drink lots of water. Read this article for more information on high GL Carbs:
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/carbohydrates.html

Do not try fad diets or diet pills. Here is an excellent food pyramid that anyone can follow: http://www.rayandterry.com/html/images/PyramidLRG.gif?osCsid=26a424be471d1337e7c2f105d5c64d9d

*3) Exercise on most days by doing cardiovascular training and/or resistance training activities.

Read a book or find a certified trainer to make sure your doing all resistance training exercises correctly. A great book to buy that teaches you the resistance training basics is âWeight Training for Dummiesâ. A superb magazine to buy with resistance training routines that will not get you bored is "Muscle and Fitness". Signup for the free newsletter. An excellent free online resource is at http://www.exrx.net/

A good book to buy that teaches you the cardiovascular training basics is âFitness for Dummiesâ.

*4) Get plenty of sleep. Sleep experts say most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for optimum performance, health, and safety.

*5) Educate yourself continually on health issues and make a life long commitment to good health. A great free publication is âDietary Guidelines for Americans 2005â. A superb book to read is âYou The Ownerâs Manualâ. An excellent periodic publication is the âNutrition Action Health Letterâ. A reputable test you can take to measure your biological age is at http://realage.com

Look at all areas where you can enhance your health. For example, make improvements in the quality of the air you breathe. Review outdoor air quality forecasts where you live and get an indoor air purifier. Send me an email or yahoo instant message to "gainbetterhealth" if you want an indoor air purifier recommendation and if you have any questions.

How much should I sell my Chrome Haro F3 for?

best kids bikes 2010

best kids bikes 2010 image

James

How rare are all Chrome bikes?
How does it only sell for 200$ when, I just checked the price to get a bike chromed and it was at least $500?

Answer
The last Haro F3 was made in 2010 and the last chrome one was made in 2005. Then it sold new for $220. That means your bike is at LEAST 8 model years old.

Value is about $70.

EDIT: The cost of chroming a bike frame IS very high. Thats due to several reasons.

First, a special anode has to be cut just for your frame and it can only be used once. Production frames are set up so many can be done, cutting the cost WAY down.

Second, I can't think of any platers that are set up to immediately take care of a bike frame so they have to do a setup, again costing a lot of money for just one unit.

Third, most platers do a triple plating- first copper, then nickel, then chrome. Production bikes only get a flash chrome which is why it looks lousy around the bottom bracket and "hidden" areas of the frame. This area is caused by what is called a Faraday Cage. If you want to know what that is you can look it up.

Finally, the platers really don't want to do it so they make you pay out the nose. I can tell you first-hand the number of kids that call a place like that and expect a frame to be chromed for the cost of a spray paint can. Chrome plating is NOT paint.

How can I get my bike to do this?

What changes after school gets out for the summer?

children riding bikes video
on Bike Safety for Kids > 4 a Kid

Patti

Do you notice more kids in the neighborhood than through the week? Nothing here like when I was a kid. No kids in the parks during the daytime, riding their bikes up and down the streets, playing in the sprinklers, running down to a little store to get a Coke or something their mother was out of. I have seen some going early in the day to the grocery stores or right before dark. We played outside most of the day unless we were doing chores or running errands. About the only difference is more kids are in the stores and malls, some running wild and others with their mother.

Answer
I have to push my 11 year old grandson outdoors, when he is not on the computer he is playing up stairs on his video games or psp. There are no children close by as we live way out in the country. He is a tv watcher too. We have a park with a public pool that I take him to so he can be with other children every Saturday in the summer. We also have a place at the beach we love to go too. Being an only child can have a lot of drawbacks, but we try to make it easy for him to be with children when school is out. Poppy

Is it just me, but is the number of people able to ride a bike decreasing?

Khalif

I bunch of my classmates said that there parents never taught them how to ride a bike because it's to "dangerous". I respect parents decision but I am look down upon because I am doing a dangerous activity. Is there anything wrong with riding a bike?
Also is it true America is getting fatter?
Because I barely see anyone at the park anymore. Not even little kids. But I do hear people playing video games at night with the sound turned on REALLY loud.
Some people have seen ride bikes, but not many kids in my area.

Answer
The number of kids riding bicycles may be down. But the number of people commuting by bicycle is up about 20% in the past few years in the USA.

I agree with what you're saying though - and for at least two reasons. 1) Parents don't trust their own neighborhood or over-protect the child. There's a lot of weirdos out in the world today. 2) The allure of video games & TV keeps kids away from riding a bicycle. 3) And the one I get most upset over...parents are too damn lazy to spend any quality time with their own child & teach them the proper way to ride a bicycle & do so safely!!!

Pardon me while I air out some dirty laundry. My "ex" wife being guilty of #3. Because my kid had/has Asperger's Syndrome (a form of autism) she felt he (our son) would NEVER be able to do anything more than ride around the block on the sidewalk. I proved her wrong. End of rant.

My wife and I want to ride bikes during the summer and need to buy everything, 2 adult bikes, a child seat, three helmets, and a bike holder for our car. We noticed prices at walmart are really cheap compared to other stores in the area. I understand they are of lesser quality, but do you recommend Walmart bikes and extras for a family of beginners?

Answer
Getting a bunch of quality bikes for the family all at once can be rather costly. Being you know these are not top of the line, my suggestion is to go there and buy what you need to get into biking. Then as you can afford it or find out how much riding you and your family will be doing upgrade. The problem with kids and some activities is that when you start you do it a lot then it tapers off and then after a season the bikes, boat, etc just collect dust from lack of use.

There are two different types. One is called a Tag A Long that is made to attach to the seat post of an adult bike and the other is a boom type device that lifts the front wheel of the childs bike off the ground. The tag a long is a much better design.

What is the most comfortable mountain bike seat for a woman with a big bottom?

kids bicycle online shopping image

Myra G

I just bought a seat that looks comfortable but is not. Any suggestions???
yes, it has been a while since I have used a bike.

Answer
Hi Myra,

First let's get some basic terms squared away. Bike seats are called "saddles"... For the most part "seats" are found in bleachers, office buildings and in cars.

I have been an active cyclist since 1985, currently logging 200-250 miles per week... Now it is true that I am not a woman, nor do I have a wide bottom, but I can help you out a bit. Saddles are now being made women-specific. Most of these are narrower models, but as someone else pointed out, women naturally have a wider pelvic region (the whole birthing thing), so they will be shaped differently from a male saddle. If you went to a decent bike shop, you would see saddles with sections that look like they are missing, cut out or perhaps the maker forgot to finish building it. That however is the way they are suppose to look. The cut out region is to alleviate pressure on your pelvic region - and to weight weenies (what they call people who count every gram of every part that goes on their bikes) it is cool because that saddle will weigh less than solid ones.

If you weren't completely sold on a mountain bike, I would recommend a recumbent for true comfort while riding.. Those are the bikes that you sit in a very wide chair-like "seat", with your legs extended out to the pedals in front of you. Riding a recumbent would work certain muscle groups harder than a regular bike would. Your gluts (butt muscles) would be worked (abused - LOL) hard along with your leg muscles of course. The saddle on a recumbent is light-years more comfortable than a standard bike.

If you are already sold on the mountain bike idea, or perhaps you have one and saddle discomfort has become the principal issue at hand, then first thing I would recommend is to look at Performancebike.com. Click on the SADDLES link on the left. Then select WOMEN'S SADDLES. You will see a very wide shaped saddle there for sale for $39.99 (12% off) called "The Seat" by Ergo. It probably doesn't look anything like any saddle you have ever seen (and yes it is ok to call this one a SEAT! It is advertised as:

"Extra wide for unbelievable support and comfort"

"Short length provides a non-restrictive pedal stroke"

"Integrated rear reflectors for added visibility"

"Gel padding dissipates road vibration while providing plenty of padding for comfort"

Keep in mind that "The Seat" is a saddle that supports your body the same way as when you sit in a chair.

Shoot that almost sounds good enough for me! If it could recline and give me a massage I would be set! LOL! Just kidding of course.

Another thing to keep in mind that if you are riding a department store bicycle, you really should get properly fit on your bike. It sounds like you have a passion that makes you want to ride, but the dang pain in the butt part (sorry) has discomforted you and irked you enough to have you post a question here. A reliable bike shop can help you "Saddle Up" properly. They can tell if your saddle is too high or too far back. They can help if your crank arms are too long, or if the distance to your handlebar is too far away, too low or too high. All of the stated issues above can contribute to a sore backside.

What should I know about commuting via bicycle?

loved

My fiancee and I recently purchased a new home. It is close to the grocery store and our places of employment. I was thinking about buying a bicycle to commute to work and the grocery store. What are some basics that a first timer should know? i.e. Accessories I'll need, traffic basics, securing my bike, etc.
Oblivion: Grow up. I know how to ride a bike. I've just never used it as a means of commuting. Only during trail rides, etc.

Answer
The first thing you need to know is that your life is about to improve dramatically and in ways you may not even realize!

No gas. No insurance. No parking costs and bonus workout time so you might get to cancel that gym membership!

This is totally exciting and I am stoked you'll be joining me in the bike lane!

First the bike. Go test ride at your local bike shop and fearlessly ask a ton of questions. No intimidation allowed and never go to a big box store for your bike.

You need to make sure that your fitted properly for your ride. Have them fit you even if you don't purchase and give you the dimensions.

Now get a helmet and some simple front and rear lights - even if you don't think you'll ride at night... get them, put them on, use them!

Wear whatever you are comfortable in- there's no rule about lycra! - watch the chain for loose clothing. Experiment prior to your commute if you wear skirts - some are OK, others... well you can imagine. (I don't mind, but you might!)

You might want a basket or a bike rack with saddle bag(s) for the grocery store.

If there is a secure place at work to lock your bike (only you and coworkers have access) you can get by with a cable lock. If not find the best bike rack around and definitely use a "U Lock".

Do a Google search for "Sheldon Brown" - he's got more advice on this stuff too.

Try this site to plan a route or hook up with a local bike club online to see where you can get a map.

Does it rain a lot where you live? Fenders!!! 90% dryer I kid you not.

You might also join an online bike forum for more tips.

Good luck and happy riding!

What is the best type of bike to put a baby seat on?

I am not comfortable putting the baby seat on the back but since they have the ones where my son can be in front of me, I was just wondering which type of bike works best. Thanks!

Answer
Not sure that I would use any seat where the child would be sitting on the bike itself. There are several good trailers that are on the market that I would feel much better about my kids in. I purchased a Burley brand trailer with no regrets. It is very stable and if I wreck my bike the trailer arm compensates so that the kids don't flip also. Not sure how old your son is but that would play a big part in what you buy also. Shop around and check the local bike shop too. They can be very helpful.

How can I learn to ride a bicycle?

Danielsan

I tried riding a bike as a kid but fell and was traumatized to the point that I never got back on a bike. Now I feel, as an adult ready to take on the challenges, but that little fear keeps encroaching back in. How can I make this a successful feat overcome, and finally learn how to ride a bike?

Answer
I had trouble learning to balance a bike and I know someone who thinks correct reach to the pedal is more important than reach to the ground and put my kids on bikes too big for them and they had nasty accidents that put them off for ages.

Here are some tips:

Get a trustworthy bike-shop or sensible and knowledgeable friend help you to work out a good frame size for you. Although most adult bikes are 26" (which is the height of the wheels) the length needs considering as well. But for now, as long as it doesn't seem too hard or too easy to reach the handlebars, that should do. When you are riding well and regularly for some distance, you'll work out what, if anything, is wrong. A call to a bike shop to tell them your height should be enough for them to tell you if you should be on a 26".

Make sure the front and rear brakes are working well and mainly rely on the rear brake for now. Preferably no back pedal brakes unless you feel that lacking in skill. If so, as soon as you feel ready, get onto a bike without because it will be easier to get fully competent.

To work out a good height for the saddle, sit on the bike and make sure that you can put both feet almost completely on the ground at the same time. Best not to be able to put both fully and completely on the ground because that will make pedaling very cramped and if you are too cramped, it will affect your balance. This is an excellent height for being able to stop yourself falling over in most situations or give you some control of the fall if you do lose your balance. This will help with confidence which is key to learning.

To learn to balance a bike, find a gentle slope with a safe ending, either going uphill or just levels off. Start at the top of the slope and sit on the bike saddle with your legs hanging out to the sides, not on the pedals. Let the bike roll and use your feet to lightly push you back towards centre if you start to go over. (If necessary, take the pedals off for this stage but children upwards of about 7 and adults probably don't need to.) Keep going back to the top of the slope and rolling down again; as you feel more confident about your balance, try putting your feet on the pedals (but don't worry about turning them yet). The slope doesn't need to be very long - the dead-end I learned on only had about 3 houses on each side. When you can balance the bike and get your feet on the pedals, start trying a bit of pedalling. Soon after this, you're ready for a longer slope or a piece of quiet straight road.

When you have mastered your balance and are starting to ride fairly confidently, start raising the seat a bit at a time, never going beyond what you feel safe doing, until your legs are just slightly bent as you sit on the seat and put your feet on the pedals.

It took me most of an afternoon to finally get my balance. My family had spent quite a bit of time helping me but I still hadn't got it. That afternoon of rolling down the slope was pretty much what finally got me going.

Also, stay away from bumps until you feel really confident and then just small ones until you work out what you can handle. And of course, *never* jump your bike up onto a kerb unless you have special wheels - they'll get damaged and go out of "true" and then the brakes won't work properly.

Ive always wanted too but I never really made the effort to make this dream real. Im a 15 year old girl, I live in Victoria BC, and I don't have much cash, but im looking for a job and I would be willing to save to buy a bike. I don't know about local places, but I do know there is one or two because a kid from my neighbourhood bikes, and its the area for it I presume. I don't think my dad would let me though, he has this thing against bikes.

But man, it looks amazing. I've always wondered what it feels like to get big air and cruse through the dirt, not having to worry about all the stupid problems in my life, it would just be me and my bike. As you can see, i've been thinking about this for years. :/

A little info about cost would be helpful to please :)

Curious

You see a lot of pale blonde hair kids and red hair kids that grow up in small farm towns. You hardly ever see dark hair kids with olive complexion who grow up in rural america.

But once you get closer to big cities, you see kids with dark hair and darker skin complexions, who are white.

Why?

Answer
that is a pretty good observation Curious. I really think its because they don't get to play outdoors enough. nwhen we were younger we went swimming and biking, but these only play video games, so a little rain is exciting for them.

maybe we should try to change that. but safety is still important, so maybe we should encourage them to do a safe sport like swimming with their needed equipment like goggles

What if he never leaves the house & is "afraid" of the sun because he's never gone outside?

My 7 year old son is curious if other kids have this problem and wants to know what other parents would do! Thanks!
BTW: My son is asking about a friend of his... not him. We have a Wii that just SITS there off all but one or two hours a week! =)

Answer
That's really sad. It's sad but it's true, children are victims of society, gaining a lot of weight, and the most disappointing observation I've made is most can NOT solve problems without the aid of an adult or a computer. You may not think of this as an answer, but more like an ode to simpler time that really wasn't very long ago.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and drank kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because we were always outside playing. We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were okay.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We didn't have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, not even a Gameboy. No 150 channels on cable, no cel phones, internet, DVD's, MP3's, or PC's. We had FRIENDS and we went outside and found them, even on rainy days where the worst part would be getting a soaker.

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with the disappointment. Imagine that.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law.

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever. The past 20 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. If you are one of us . . . congratulations.

Share this with your kids so they will know how brave, and lucky, their parents were.

I went to walmart today to look at their bikes and I found this bike that was so cute and unique looking, but It's a little to tall for me. It's a beach cruiser bike by Panama Jack:

https://www.t-mobilepictures.com/myalbumâ¦

This is the style of bike I want, but my question is am I going to have a hard time finding a beach cruiser that is less than 26"? All of them were that size and I went to 3 different stores. Also, is there a way to lower the bike?

Answer
Hey there!
Glad you found a cruiser you like!

First off, the link you provided is not working.
Generally a 26" is suited for anyone 5 feet and above. Give or take a couple of inches.
It also depends on how long your legs are and the style of the Beach Cruiser.
Anything below 26" is generally considered a kids bike. Go for the 26"
and change it to fit you.

Lower the seat post, and you can also lower (and swivel) the handlebars to accommodate the low seat.

Good luck!
I hope this helps and feel free to contact me and I will gladly help out.

I don't need anything fancy. I just need it to get around to nearby places like the library and the record store, since I'm only 14 and can't drive.

Again, nothing fancy.

How much should I pay for a used bicycle in decent condition?

Answer
This is a good question, but it is hard to answer. There are an incredible number of factors that will influence how much you will have to pay for a bike. I always found getting a bargain really is a matter of how much time and effort you are willing to put into the pursuit. If you need something right now, you usually will pay top dollar. If you have time and are willing to spend some effort looking around you can scout out all sort of deals.

Here is what I've noticed about bicycle prices. A 2 to 5 year old bike should never sell for more than half the price of a comparable new one. Older bikes can be easily had for $20-$50, but may need some work to get on the road. (Tires and brake pads often need to be replaced, but these are pretty cheap and easy to deal with.) The more someone simply wants to get a bike out of their house, the less it will cost. Nearly every one who has kids has a couple of old bikes collecting dust in the garage that they may want to get rid of.

Here are the places to find a decent used bike:

- bike store expect to pay top dollar
- used bike cooperative - lots of places have cooperatives that rebuild and sell bikes
- thrift store
- police and/or town sales of abandoned and stolen/recovered bikes
- craigslist.com
- neighbors - try sticking a note in all of your neighbors mailboxes or doors stating you are looking for a decent used bike. (You may get one for free.)

Good luck and happy hunting.

Can I use a rear mounted bike seat (for baby) with a 3 wheel bike?

girlsun69

I want to use a 3 wheel bike when riding with my baby, but I can't find any info on using an adult trike with either a baby trailer or a rear mounted seat. Having the third wheel seems like it would provide the extra stability to make a bike mounted seat safer, but I'm not sure if it's possible to properly and safely attach one to the frame of a three wheel bike? Or if I decide to use a trailer, would that attach to the frame of my bike successfully? Any info or experiences with this are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
There are a range of different bike mounted kids seats. There are also a heap of different styles of trailers. There will be some that will fit easy and ones that will need to be modified. The style of trike will determine which will fit best.

Most upright adult trikes have a large wire basket mounted between the back wheels. If this is removed it leaves plenty of potential mounting points. to securely mount one or more child seats. Of course caution needs to be observed to make sure that all moving parts are well shielded from little fingers and feet. I've seen three mounted across the back of a trike. (fitted with a custom made frame). I've also seen infant car seats mounted.

The best trailer option I can think of of the top of my head would be this style. They usually mount on a bike's rear axle, but there will be plenty of options at the back of a trike to securely mount these.
http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDetails.asp?productID=7572
http://www.actionbent.com/twtrailer.html

There are others that mount off the seat post that should work also. The most common trailers clamp onto the left chain stay, they won't be any good on a trike.(with out major rework)

Yeah; there are plenty of options. You should be able to get something pretty much "off the shelf". An extra dollar or two on different mounting clamps might be necessary. Or you could go to town and do something totally original.

I want a bike basket for my Boston Terrier (20lbs). Does anyone know of a basket that will hold my fat dog?

kpetrovich

I've looked into front mount wire baskets on a bunch of different sites but none of the descriptions tell how much weight it will hold!! Any suggestions for a front mount basket that will hold 20lbs?

Answer
If you're set on a basket, look for the kind that newspaper boys used to use. But remember - 20 pounds of moving, unstable weight on your handlebars can cause a serious wreck. The safest way is to get one of those bicycle trailers parents use to tow their kids. They have an enclosed, screened in top so the dog can't jump out. Just be sure you make wider turns when you go around corners, so you don't flip the trailer. Target stores have them for less than $100.

Hello,

i live in nyc. and not really a bike person. and read into that... my idea of a "bike" is something i dumped in the front yard as a kid, and a beach comber as a teenager.

but i live in nyc. and as much as i'd like another beach comber, that's a little too williamsburg hipster douche for my tastes.

doing some reading on brands for mt bikes etc. and cruising those police auction sites to nab a deal. seeing a lot of bikes with sizes in the 17-19 in range. but also seen a couple that're like 21 "

size charts i've seen... tend to vary a good deal.

so.. looking for advice. on what's best. or more so ...what would equate to a horrible ride. ie. a 17 would be a night mare. but anything under 23 would be manageable.(something like that)

like i said. i'm 6ft ish... i'd say. a fairly solid 6ft 1. maybe 6ft 2. although not very leggy. pants. size. tends to be. 30-32 long.

thanks for any help.

I only had one bike in life, which was a present. It was a kids bike so there was no gears I could use and stuff. But now that I have outgrown the bike, I am shopping around for a new one. I see the handlebars have this controller thing that appears to be gears or something, and I have no idea what they mean and how they work. Also, I see bikes advertised as "21-speed Bike" and etc, what does that mean?

Answer
You have led a sheltered life, haven't you.
The gears are used to make cycling easier. Higher gears are used downhill to gain speed without pedaling like mad, while the lower gears are for going uphill where you pedal faster but expend less effort.
A 21 speed bike has 21 speeds available. That one would have 7 speeds on the rear wheel and 3 on the pedal sprocket 3 x 7 =21. The 3 pedal sprocket gears are used for general speed range changing. The lowest for use in hilly country, the second for flat and the top speed range for downhill. The (7) rear wheel gears are used for uphill and downhill as I described before.

Is it ok riding a bike under the influence?

I got really trashed last night and I stole some kids bike, and rode it to my house, I accidentally crashed it into a parked car on the way home going about 1-25mph. And now there's a big bruise above my left eye.

I feel kind of guilty not leaving a note for the big dent I left in someones buick but I got to admit it was allot of fun, and it was better than calling for a ride. Should i do it again?

Answer
You can actually lose your Driver's License for it. So you might as well drive drunk instead of riding your bike drunk.

Is there an infant seat system for bike trailers?

kids seat on bike
on BETO CHILD SEAT SPARE Bicycle Bike Rear CARRIER RACK | eBay
kids seat on bike image

Arwen

Years ago we sold our car to get a slower lifestyle in our suburban town, and for 10 years we lived by bike and bus. We used the bike for short trips and for going places the bus didn't go. At the time the bus service didn't run on Sundays or holidays, so if we wanted to go anywhere, we had to take the bikes.

At the time we had three children - age 7, 4.5 and a newborn. The 7 year old rode his own bike, the 4.5 year old rode behind his dad on a trail-a-bike, and we jury-rigged an old infant seat into a bike trailer for the infant. I also carried all our groceries in that trailer, and once, a door (without the baby!). Eventually they all rode their own bikes, but it started this way.

My brother's wife is about to have a kid, and I want to give them a bike trailer to go riding with their new baby.

Has anyone invented/marketed a better system for infants in bike trailers? If so, what bike trailer does it work with, and where can I get it?

Answer
Most bike systems are designed for babies 9 months and over. It's an issue of being able to hold their heads up enough to prevent the sort of jostling that biking creates. Even a carseat in a bike trailer, isn't secure enough to hold them steady, especially not in the case of a spill or accident. I also wanted something for our five month old to use with our bikes in the spring, but no such luck. Now she's 16 months, and we've gotten her a bike seat.

I think maybe just buy them a bike trailer and let them decide what they are going to do to. It might've been a risk you and your husband were willing to take, but each parent should decide for themselves.

Good luck!

What kid of bike is good for an adult beginner?

I never learned how to ride a two wheeler as a kid just a tricycle.

I've tried the Giant Suede and the Schwinn Town and Country Trike and was looking at the Townie. $500 is about my price range.
By tried I mean I hopped on and sat on it while the saleswoman held the front wheel. The trike I was able to get on an d go obviously =D

Answer
You will have to judge if a three wheeler will meet you needs.

I will tell you how to learn to ride a two wheeler. Buy a low cost Dahon folding bike and get a bike helmet. Drop the seat way down so you can stand up while sitting on the seat. Wear your helmet and long pants. Go to a local park during quiet hours when no one is there. Drop the seat on the Dahon so low that it can be used as a scooter with both of your feet flat on the ground. With helmet on and riding in the soft grass in the park walk around with your weight on the seat and getting the hang of the steering. Don't use the pedals at all and in fact they can even be removed from the bike. When you get too far leaned to one side use the leg on that side to right yourself and start again. This will take most adults about 1-2 weeks of visits to the park to get the hang of it. After a while you will be able to coast and hold your legs off the ground for several seconds before the bike loses speed and leans over. At that point you can try to actually start pedaling.
