Hi all!
I would really appreciate your help.
I am a 25 year old female, 5'6, 180 pounds. I am thinking of buying a road bicycle, mainly to lose some weight. I gained about 40 pounds after my 2nd baby, and I am having trouble shredding these annoying pounds!

No matter what I tried, I am so busy that I cannot exercise on a regular basis. With housework, kids, and full time school, I simply do not have time to set aside for exercise...

However, a crazy idea popped into my mind. I go to school that is about 6 miles away from my house. The road is absolutely flat and straight, no hills, for 5 miles, and there are some turns for the last 1 mile. There is also a bicycle lane for the whole 6 miles.

Would it be crazy to try and bike to school? Would I be able to bike for 6 miles in under 1 hour at a comfortable pace without killing myself? I did ride a bike as a teenager a lot, but that was a while ago. Now, I am not that physically fit, but not a couch potato either. I walk a whole lot, and walk up/down the stairs a lot too.

Another advantage to buying a bicycle is the fact that the road is pretty congested in the mornings when I drive (3 schools on that road), so it takes me about 45 minutes to get through these 6 miles anyway.

So... please share your opinion. Considering my weight and fitness level, should I try? Would it kill me to bike for 6 miles? (comfortable pace, straight good road).

Lastly, which bike would you recommend? I would love a good comfortable bike, good wheels, and good speed.

Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks in advance!
*** Thank you very much, JerryJ. I am thinking of borrowing a bike from my friends - both of them have expensive great bikes. I'll have it for a week, if I do find the bike comfortable and see that I can do it, I'll certainly go and buy an expensive bike. Great answer!

Answer
- Would it be crazy to try and bike to school

No. Any exercise that is performed at your target heart rate for an extended period will burn fat. Walking, cycling, and rowing are some of the best. Use a pulse meter to ensure that you are exercising at the correct intensity. Too intense and you just burn sugar, not fat.

- Would I be able to bike for 6 miles in under 1 hour at a comfortable pace without killing myself

Yes.

- Would it kill me to bike for 6 miles

No.

- Lastly, which bike would you recommend

Get the best bike you can afford. There is a big difference in ridability between cheap and good. If it's a pain to ride you won't ride much. Get a diamond frame (not a girl's bike) and get one that fits properly and don't get one from a chain store. Bikes from chain stores, department stores, discount stores, etc. often have non-standard parts to make them cheaper. These generally break sooner and are not repairable.

And get a helmet that is Snell approved. Don't even think about riding without one. Also get a good lock, such as a Kryptonite. (The kind with solid bars and a circular key, not with a chain)

Join your local bike club too. Most bike clubs have rides for all fitness levels. Once you get a reasonable amount of fitness, consider randonneur riding http://www.rusa.org/

Why is wearing a seatbelt a law?

zzcwefc

I'm from Missouri and recently I was pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt and given a ticket. I'm not mad about the fine (it's only 10 bucks) but am about why someone can fine you for it because it doesn't make sense.

Your seatbelt is their for your own safety, if I choose not to wear it I understand the morbid consequences however it is MY choice. The same goes for wearing a helmet for a motorcycle.

Why doesn't an officer then fine someone for not wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle on the street then? Is it not also a moving vehicle? Why the fuck didn't I have to wear a seatbelt (not even provided one) as a kid on the bus for so many years!?!

Basically I fail to see how the state can fine you for this unless I'm missing something like an insurance reason...is it because your a danger to other people in an accident if your body goes flying out the windshield??

Please help shed some light on this issue, thanks!!
I've been a driver for 10 years, never been in an accident, and have drivers insurance. No one will be paying 'tax dollars' for my decision not to wear a seatbelt and/or whatever consequence might entail from it, that is just ridiculous. How would I be putting others at risk? How is it the state's responsibility?

Answer
The courts have repeatedly examined mandatory seat belt laws and have consistently found that they serve a "public" interest, not merely protecting (or not) the person who wears them (or not). This is based on research that demonstrates that those who wear a seatbelt are in a better position to maintain control of the vehicle in the event of an emergency and/or crash. This increases the likelihood that someone OUTSIDE the car can also be protected. Thus, it is NOT only the safety of the person who chooses to wear or not wear a seatbelt that is a concern or target of these laws.

The very short story deals with a boy in India, who, along with his older brother and mother, are at a festival of Divali, where he sees a bunch of street kids being bullied a group of older street kids. The boy also realizes that, while he is at the festival, he is carrying his father's golden watch (who is now dead). As he is with his mother at the festival (it is his first time) his watch gets stolen by a street child in the crowd.
The boy runs after the street child, but he loses his track. Meanwhile the boy's mother is also running after him, and when the three of them get home, she beats him for running into the crowd like that. His older brother also yells at him. While the boy tries to explain his situation, he feels that his mother isn't seeing the way he wants her to see it. He is sent to his room to await his punishment for the next day.

A few months pass, and the boy is on a bicycle, going to his uncle's house for the summer, who lives in Delhi. As he goes there, he spots the kid who stole his watch from him at the festival.
the boy follows him on his bike, then confronts him, but the stealer's friends join in, and beat the boy up, and throw him off. A local stret kid ( the same one who was collecting the trash at the festival) helps him, and comforts him. he tells the boy that the one who stole his watch was named Ali. He claimed himself as the gangster of the delhi streets, and bullied all the street kids. he would take their food, or their clothes, or any other thing. All his friends helped him out.
Understanding this, he has a plan as to how to get his watch back. he tells the kid to assemble all his street friends.
Once they assemble, he states that they are going to approach his hideout, (where he lives) and forcibly drive him out of the city.
They arrive at the his hideout, and the boy tells him to leave the streets with his friends, or suffer the consequences (each of the kids has a stone or stick, ready to beat him). Ali isn't afraid of the kids, and says that he and his big kids will help him out, but the big kids back away.
Eventually, they drive Ali away, and the kids are all happy that the bully is gone.
However, when the boy enters his hideout to find his watch, he sees that the watch is broken. his last great memory of his father, gone. He starts crying, but is glad to know that within it is a picture of his father and him at the festival when he was two, which he pockets.

do you think this is good?

Answer
It's not a bad idea. It reminds me a bit of the watch story in Pulp Fiction. But there are some inconsistencies. In the beginning, the kid is at the festival for the first time...but when he gets the watch back, there's a picture inside of him and his father attending the festival when the kid was two.

And, if Ali really is the baddest kid on the block, why do all the other street kids simply agree to cast him out? Aren't they afraid of him? And, how are they going to make sure Ali stays gone after they throw him out? He's not afraid of them, so why not just come back?

How likely is it a street kid would hold onto a gold watch instead of selling it?

Just some things to consider. Keep working at it.

Beta readers, help please?

Where will I find readers who will give me feedback about my writing? Here is one paragraph. What do you think? Does reading it make you feel to read what happens next in story? Thank you.

âSuccess is a moving targetâ

âKalpane, you made us so proud. You will be first girl Engineer in our family.â
Kalpana was happy to hear it too but she didnât know after ten years this will be saddest day of her life. There was nothing to be sad about at that movement. After taking her education from Hindi medium, it was very hard for her to adapt to English medium junior college with kids from affluent families. In first year of college she barely got class C so nobody expected in second year she will get A Class. Her parents were so overjoyed they decided she would join Engineering studies.
Kalpana never had a future plan. Why not? Her view of world was very limited. Day started with mother calling to get up and help collect water from tab. Within one hour tabs will go dry and nobody in town gets water until next morning. Then help mom with household chores like swiping floor and cutting vegetables. Getting very good education is not as necessary as knowing house hold chores after all she is a girl. After all that is done get ready to go to extra coaching classes. She had to travel five-six miles daily on bicycle like all others. Yes in this part of India bicycle is main form of transportation. She had wished last two years only one thing â To show her classmates that she is smart, intelligent and can master English. Her aim was never to go to Engineering College but to have some friends or lots of friends. She had friends but only three. She always wondered how come everybody talks with my best friends but nobody other than these three girls talk with me. Anyway today she was very proud of herself and happy and in no mood to think about how joining Engineering College will affect her.

To marry unequally is to suffer equally.

Now fast forward to four years. It is last year of Engineering college. What happens when you donât have long term goals? What happens when you do things that you donât like? What happens when your parents donât have time to talk to you? Thatâs what happened to Kalpana. Her grades fell from A to D.

Answer
Look for an online english tutor with one-on-one sessions.

Look for a book or reading club in your town or city. A Public Library is a good place to search.

Buy Wren and Martin for high school and make it a point to complete one exercise per day.

Join a online support group or forum for English writing.

I have read similar short stories in magazines published in Delhi. You can google "Delhi magazines" and send your articles to them

There are lots of books you can purchase and read on how to to get the reader's attention.

If you have time and cash you can attend night courses on Englsih as a Second Language at your local college or university. YMCA/YWCA is also a good source.

If you want to learn for free then there are several online resources. Just google "English for hindi speakers".

Join British Council LIbrary if you have one in your city. Or just join some library.

When reading a book, keep a concise dictionary beside you, not a pocket one.

Listen to BBC Radio and Television. The subject can be anything.

Watch English movies with subtitles on your PC or Mac. With technology You can even slow down the frames so you can understand what the characters are saying..

how can i speed up my 7 year olds metabolism?

kids bikes 7 years image

Jeff H

he isn't really fat right now,but all of his close cousins are. he just started playing football and he loves it. would like to see him gain muscle mass instead of fat. he is a bit taller and bigger than most 7 year olds and much stronger. just want to use this oppertunity to motivate him to get healthier. thank you.

Answer
You can't speed up his metabolism. You can teach him a healthy life style. Eating a healthy diet, limit snacks, no soda, exercising on a regular basis, etc. At his age, all you really need to do as for as exercising is limit indoor time. Have the kid outside playing. Riding a bike, swimming, or even just playing with other kids can keep a kid in good shape.

How do I deal with obnoxious, badly behaved neighborhood kids?

Jehn

My family recently relocated to a new area. We chose a house we loved and everything was great until a couple of months ago. I have one 7 year old son who I love dearly but I really don't like children at all. I don't mind children as much when they have good manners and you can tell that their parents took the time to be good parents.
I have a couple neighbors with really bratty, rude kids. They are always messing with stuff on my property, touching our cars, and trying to take stuff that's outside that doesn't belong to them. There are absolutely no boundaries. I've given them the rules of our house and when they are on our property but it's completely disregarded. Recently they just started trying to come into my house whenever. I try to make sure the doors are always locked but sometimes it's necessary to leave one unlocked if someone is outside doing something. They do still try and get in when the doors are locked though. I walked into my living room the other day and found two kids jumping on my couch trying to figure out how to get my TV to turn on. I just about flipped out and wanted to scream at them. These kids completely ruin my son's time when he goes out to play with other friends. I want him to be able to play outside but I don't need a kid ringing my doorbell (20 times in a row) and "telling" because my son won't let them ride his bike or play with his toys, etc. If I wanted to listen to kids tattle on one another for no reason I would have had more than one. I don't want to be the bitchy mean lady in the neighborhood but my patience is completely gone. I find myself hardly able to address them without sounding really mean anymore. I have tired to talk to the other parents about how it's not okay for them to just come in our house or mess with our stuff, but the only thing that changed is that they aren't as nice when they see us. It's obvious to me that they consistently send they're kids out every day to roam the neighborhood because they don't want to deal with them at home. Who let's 6 and 7 year old kids play completely unsupervised (you can't see my house from their house so I know the parents aren't watching them)?
Any ideas on how I can deal with this before I go insane? I don't feel it's okay to discipline other people's children. It's not like they would listen anyway.
HELP!!

I've spoken to the parents three times. I've very firm. The more I speak to them the more defensive they get and the less they take action. I'm not the only one in the neighborhood having these problems. The kids aren't EVER supervised so they just run around and do whatever they want.

Answer
if the kids arent being supervised call cps, they might move them elsewhere, also thats tresspassing and the parents could get in trouble for that,

Help Buying a Road bike?

kids bike seat toys r us image

hi, im a college kid, freshman year and im in need of a road bike. im sick of my 7th grade mountain bike from toys r us. its rusted and heavy and tires are fat as hell.

I just want a bike thats thin, with wheels as thin as my finger. I don't need anything fancy. if it has brakes and it works. I want it. I don't need some 26 speed crap.

But i found this on craigs list

http://richmond.craigslist.org/bik/2177557920.html

the owner is a littler over 6 and with the seat all the way down he couldn't straighten out his legs. And im 5ft 10 so i might be able to fit this bike nicely.

And i need to replace the brake pads in the front
how much would that cost me?

do u think this is a good deal or a shady rip off? Like idk much about bikes but all the bike shops i check out online are like 1,000 dollars. If u pay 1,000 dollars for a fucking bike ur crazy unless ur trynna get into the tour de france.
No the guy that is 6 ft said HIS KNEES BEND if he sits on the seat lowered all the way down and he tries to straighten his legs out.

Which means if he puts the seat up a few inches his legs will be straight.

if i can keep the seat at the bottom position it might be perfect or maybe just a little shorter, which i could easily fix by raising the seat.

and i'm 5 ft 10 and hes a littler over 6. so only a 2 inch difference or so.

so he can fit the bike
what do u guys think about this bike for 90 bucks?

http://richmond.craigslist.org/bik/2199116122.html

another poster said anything made before 1981 would be horrible from this company
one person said the bike fram was too small for a 5'10 person ( my height )
and i have to straighten out the rear wheel.

So could u guys give me feedback on this bike too?

Answer
Post states, "Only problem is that the rear wheel is out of alignment, needs to be taken to a bike shop to be trued out but this is no big deal."

That's just plain BS. Be very, very careful buying anything from craigslist. Test the bike extensively. Talk him/her down on price.

Upgrading my bike???

Kelly

I use this bike for leisure but every now and then I take it for long distances. It's a cruiser with foot brakes but I LOVE it!!!! The seat is uncomfortable and my hands are starting to tingle after holding on to the handle bars for so long. And it's a heavy bike to put on my bike rack... Is there another type of bike like this with a comfortable seat and handlebars? And also lighter? I was going to look at the bike shop but I don't want to spend $500.00 on a bike.. Do you think Toys-R-Us, Walmart or Target has a good bike.... I don't even know what brand I should stick with.
Thank-you!!! Good advice!! I have no problem spending $200-$300 on a bike and I can ask my dad to put it together!!! I defiantly need a lighter bike to put on bike rack and also hang it on the wall during winter!!! Thank-you!

Answer
I think you will be dissapointed with a Toys-R-Us, Walmart or Target bike. They are put together by a highschool kid in the back room. I don't think its worth risking your life on the mood of a 15yr old. Performance bike is a bike shop chain that is pretty good. Has reasonable quality on bikes and good service, they offer lifetime basic tune ups. But understand if you want lighter you will need to spend more...

Here's a women's cruiser that is $230

nossum

I have a 3 year old, he loves watching it on tv, riding his bike fast. What do I do? I would love to get a dirt bike as well, I only have street experience, I just want to keep up.
What is your experience?

Answer
You can get childrens off road bikes. 3 is a bit too young. They have all sorts of levers and gears to remember what to do to or with, as well as tricky things like steering and staying upright. My daughter is 4 and still forgets to look where she is going on a push bike with stabilizers.

I would say that he should be OK at about 10 or so. At this age they have enough understanding to do cope everything, as well as understand what happens if you fall off.

As a juniour sport this has a lot going for it, primarily specific safety gear and supervised places to ride.

However, you can also get mini motos. These were originally designed as an adult fun bike (See mini moto racing at the next BMF). But many parents buy them for their children. Something capable of 60 mph that is unstable and tricky to ride and you are going to give this to your under 10? I wouldn't. Stick with the off road bikes. Go to your local motorcycle shop (Not the big places with lots of salesmen who may/may not have taken their CBT, but the sort of place where the owner used to race bikes and has a refreshingly gruby mechanic.) and ask their advice.

How do you discipline your 9 year old?

Savvy

My kid is generally very well-behaved, and always has been, but in worst-case scenarios he was the kind of kid who needed a spanking. Now he's too big for that, and time-outs and talking-tos don't work. I love the kid to the ends of the earth, and he's really a good boy, but sometimes I wonder if he's deaf or just doesn't care what I am telling him! Sometimes this can even be dangerous, as he has a 2-y-o sister and if he doesn't listen to what I tell him, she could be hurt. What can I do? How do you discipline your tween?

Answer
He's at the age where you start taking away privileges - TV, video games, music, computer time, his bike, grounding from friends' houses, etc. It has to be something he really enjoys, and you HAVE to follow through on it and be consistent. The old way was "to bed without supper!" but you don't take away a true necessity like supper, rather take a privilege such as dessert. He's more than old enough to understand consequences, even consequences that might not be immediate (like restricting him from an event he wants to attend). Before you arbitrarily take away a privilege, make sure you talk to him in advance about the rules and what the consequences will be for breaking them. Be sure he understands why the rules are in place.

If he has tv, radio, cd player, video games, etc. in his room, you will have to physically remove the item for the duration of the punishment. Around our house, a typical first offense is usually met with 24 hour tv privileges suspended. That goes up to 3 days or a week - really, you know him best. Some kids could care less about losing tv privileges and are more concerned about other things - you have to find the right restriction and have the punishment fit the crime.

A friend of mine has an additional discipline tool tied to her childrens' allowances. At the beginning of the week, she puts the entire allowance into a jar for each child, which is on the kitchen counter. For every infraction, she removes a portion of the money - this really works as it is visual. In her case, she may start out with $5 in the jar for her son, 3 singles and 8 quarters. Forgetting to clean up, or whatever the infraction, has a 25-cent deduction. Back-talking is a dollar. Etc. Talk it out with your kids before hand so they understand exactly what's going on.

Trixies Ma

I'm on a good basis with most of the neighbors closest to my house, it's just a 1 way street.

My neighbors that live down one, and across the street have 2 kids. One is a daughter about 9 years old, and a 5 or 6 year old son. They ride their bikes up and down the street a lot, and even though it some times upsets my dogs (and the neighbor's dogs right next to me), no one complains, because none of us are total jerks.

However, lately the son has been riding up on the grass that is right up next to my fence. I have no doubt that he is doing it to rowdy up my dogs and make them upset. Because I don't want to listen to them bark their brains out, I end up having to bring them in.

Is there a proper way to address this issue? Should I talk to his parents about it, or should I just talk to the kid?
(I know some people will say I should just train my dogs not to bark, but I believe that since they are inside a secure fence, they have just as much a right to bark as kids do to make noise in their yards.) But they don't deserve to be egged on to bark because this kid is bored (or for whatever reason).

Answer
I don't think you should say anything to the boy, just to his parents. At 5/6 yrs old, he's still a little young to realize what he is doing so even though he is doing it on purpose, I don't think it's to be mean. He thinks he is just playing with them. The reason I think it should be addressed immediately with his parents is because if he gets too close to your dogs, they might bite him. I'm sure they are not vicious dogs and you probably have them trained but they are still animals and if they view him as an intruder, they will protect their turf. If they bite him, his parents might decide to sue you even though you did nothing wrong.

Does anyone know what the motorcycle laws are in Kentucky?

zil28ennov

Is a 9 year old allowed to be a passenger on a motorcycle on the highway? I tried looking the answer up and I can't find it. If you look the answer up and find it, please let me know where you found it at. I need to copy it so I can give it to my nephew's mother to prove to her that the kid shouldn't be on the back of a bike. Thanks!

Answer
there is no age restriction on a passengers age to ride in kentucky

it really depends on the maturity level of the child and of the driver... i have had my daughters on my bike with me sence they were 6 and 9 (they are twins by the way) i based when they could ride on how well they listened to my instructions for how to act on the bike and what they could and could not do.

though when i do have any passenger, i find i watch for blue hair trolls that cant see over the stearing wheel, sccocer moms in there suvs applyin makeup/eating/drinking/talking on the cell phone/ and turning around to yell at all the kids in their suv, first year drivers... etc etc... more so and people wonder why bikers have loud pipes and extra bright head lights

my source to answer your question is from the AMA website which servies most of the bikers here in the US and fights for our rights at the state and federal level while providing info for us

How to increase the power in a lawn mower engine?

best kids mini bikes

best kids mini bikes image

Mako

Right now I have a craftsman flathead engine making 5.5 hp.

I'd like to put it in a go cart or mini bike sometime, so more power would be more fun.

Any tips?

Answer
Get rid of those crappy mufflers and get a tuned exhaust from a 4-cycle small motorcycle engine (125-175 cc).

Put an extension on the air cleaner and grab air from a place away from the engine.Use low restriction air cleaner. Engine vicinity air is to hot, and hot air doesn't have as much oxygen in it as colder air. Ideally you could run your air thru a box with ice cubes in it so the air enters your engine as cold and dense as possible.

If you have access to a welder and grinder and drill press you can make an induction manifold for your carburetor. The longer the tubes between your carb and your intake valve the more time the gas has to completely vaporize and burn stronger. In an engine you want top heat production to make more power.

Use synthetic 50W oil and wrap a little insulation around the cooling fins. Since the lawnmower engine is made to run at walking speeds it has excess cooling fins to handle the heat of burning gas. Since your go cart moves, it doesn't need as much cooling. This is a trade off though. You want to keep your engine as hot as possible but not so hot you melt the valves or cylinder dome. So you got to experiment. Put a little insulation on engine..if's its ok with that, keep adding more until it smokes to much or power goes down (from oil not staying on cylinder walls)

Get a spark plug with multiple electrodes on the tip.

And most importantly and this is not the engine.. get a variable speed transmission (torque converter) and not a friction clutch. This transmission will make sure your engine is getting the optimum torque output no matter your speed. It's like having a hundred gear transmission.

Try to copy the design of a 125 cc four cycle motorcycle engine. These engines are smaller in cc's than a lawnmower engine but get about 15 hp out of them. Lawnmower engines are built for longevity and dirt and cheapness and heat. So they limit the horsepower on purpose so the engine lasts longer.

In all honesty you would be a lightyear ahead by just grabbing a used motorcycle engine and transmission and sprockets, chains and controls out of a wrecked bike rather than trying to use a lawnmower engine.

You could spend a 100 hr of labor and several hundred dollars trying to make your 5.5 hp engine put out 15 hp and Yamaha and Honda do this all day long. Don't reinvent the wheel and start with a proven engine and transmission. When I was a kid I tried those lawnmower engined mini-bikes and go-karts...they always disappoint. The clutches wear out quick and the motors arent designed for the high loads you put on them, so they break quick

How can a 13 yr old kid make 600$ in 2 months?

Brandon

I really want to get my first mini bike. Obviously my parents can't buy it for me because it's too much money to spend on me. So I have been trying to save up money. Except it's just not going as quickly as I thought. I do have chores that I do. I get about 15$ each week. Except it's not enough to get 600$ in 1 or 2 months. I know the goal of 600$ in 1 month is a little extreme, but I will be getting out of school soon, so the fster I can get the bike the better. I also have a really busy schedule so it will be hard to make time for work. So can you please give me a few suggestions on how I could make 600$ in 2 months? It would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I have started to sell some stuff on craigs list (it won't get me anywhere near 600$) and as of right now I have about 100$.
So yeah, thanks.

Answer
You can't. Sorry!

Will I need a double stroller for a 4year old and newborn?

Mommy

We are planning on walking (45 min) to and from preschool and walking/jogging a lot on the beach, so it would be nice to have a seat in case his legs get tired. He will be 4 when the new baby is born. I do like the phil and teds, but I'm thinking that 4 is too old? What would you suggest?

Thank you!

Answer
I had a phil and teds and loved it, but my kids were closer together. If your son is small for his age, then it could be fine, but I find the legroom on it wasn't great for the older child. It's also great for manuvering through malls and urban areas, but not so much for off-trail (wheels are too small/no suspension) or running (the lower seat interferes with your stride).

For the walks to and from preschool, a sit-and-stand one is great. It really depends on how much your little guy is used to walking. When my son was three, he hiked Sentinal Dome in Yosemite with us and had no problem. At 4, he wouldn't have wanted a stroller to go to preschool. Is there a place he could chain a little bike at the preschool or does he like riding a scooter? At three, my daughter whines to be carried from the car to the mall door. If I were to have another child I can guarentee that she would want to ride in a stroller. So, part of it is just knowing your son and how much help he's going to need.

I have a double schwinn running stroller that I love and still use for my 3 and 5 year old when I'm out for a 4 mile run (any more than that and it's too much to push and any less and I usually have them ride their bike/trike along with me). If you can find a Bob on craigslist, then I'd recommend it, but I couldn't afford it personally. For whether you really need the huge double jogger, it depends on how much you really want to run on the beach for your own exercise and how much of it is that you plan to take your son for walks on the beach and don't mind stopping to look at shells, throw sticks, and build sandcastles. ;-)

How do you ride a bike without training wheels?

Linda

I am nine and I can't ride my bike without training wheels! I have not rode it in years.I really want to ride it because I don't have any training wheels and I got a brand new bike that is my favorite color. I didn't want to until I went to the park and saw my friend and I was chasing her while she rode a bike without the spare wheels. Now I really want to! I will try her way tomorrow after I get to my house, but if I can't hang on to her way i'm taking my scooter to the park. If her way doesn't work, best answer deserves a lot of credit.

Answer
Well first of all, training wheels are for little kids. I doubt they even make them in a size you would need.

But actually training wheels are obsolete. The new way to teach a kid to ride a bike is what's called a 'gravity bike' (and I have NO idea why it's called that. It makes no sense to me. But that's what they call it.) What you do is take the pedals off a bike. You lower the seat so you can put both feet flat on the ground. Then you push the bike along with your feet. They make bikes for little kids that don't have cranks or chains or anything, just two wheels and adjustable seat height.

You push the bike along with your feet and learn to balance and steer. After not too long you could coast down a mild hill with your feet off the ground, you can steer by leaning without putting your feet down. Then you're ready for a real bike with pedals.

Training wheels will get you pedaling and all that, but you're not really learning to ride a bike, which has to do with balancing and steering. It's something nobody can teach you, you just get a feel for it.

The 'gravity bike' idea has resulted in kids learning to ride at a much younger age. In my day we all learned around 5 or 6 but these days I see three year olds on bikes! Which I think is great! I've never heard of a nine year old learning that way, but why not? A person your age actually has better balance than a five year old, so it should be even easier.

Riding a bike is a lot of fun! I do it almost every day. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Get a helmet, though, and expect to fall two or three times before you get good at it. It's all part of learning.

How do you make a bicycle trailer?

Meady

I am 14 and i wanted to know how to make a push-bike trailer, made out of wood, as it is close to hard rubbish time and i would like to collect some rubbish. If you know how to make it , please reply to this question!

Answer
The important parts of a trailer are the wheels and the hitch. The in between part is what makes it useful but you can tie things on with rope or attach a large plastic bin - like a rubbermaid style bin, or a clothes basket... but that can be done after.

Wood is a pretty heavy material and not strong in the ways you need for a bike. Using steel welded together from old bikes is best. Also you could use chopped up old bikes if you don't weld or have metal tools by using a simple plumbing tube cutter and hose clamps.

However, if you insist on using wood... you can be creative.

First you definitely need bike wheels. Try to find an old maybe even broken - children's bike. You need 2 wheels of the same size. Smaller wheels are stronger than bigger wheels so kids bikes are perfect. Also they are much cheaper and thrown away more often so you are more likely to find them.

Next you need something like a bike fork to mount the wheels in. This could be as simple as using the fork from the kids bike you got the wheel from - and then finding another matching fork from an identical kids bike. Finding matching scrap bikes is sometimes hard though. And it isn't wood. If you are using wood you basically have to make something similar to a fork but out of wood. You could use two beams of wood of the same size on either side of the wheel - then drill a hole for the axle in each size - you can drill both holes or even all 4 (for both wheels) all at the same time to make them match up. You will need either very strong wood or thick wood and it may take some figuring out to have it strong but thin enough for the axle to have the bolt fit on the other side.

Now for the decisions. How big a trailer do you want? I suggest basing your design around the container you are going to use. Do you have a large plastic bin of a certain size? Metal or wood would also do but would be heavier/stronger.

For instance, If you have a wooden bin or crate it might be strong enough to be integral to the bike trailer frame. Then you just attach the wheels with the forks to either side of the crate. Put the wheel in the middle of the crate so that your trailer will be balanced in the middle with the wheels carrying the weight. Have the crate be oriented with the opening at the top (of course) and the wheels in the middle of the longer sides so that the trailer is longer than it is wide. Place the Wheels such that the ground clearance underneath the trailer is about 6 inches. The lower you can put the mass to the ground the more stable and balances the trailer will be. However, you need about 6 inches of clearance to go over bumps in the road - etc.

If you are going to use a plastic (or other material) bin/crate/basket/bucket that is not strong enough to form the frame of the trailer you will have to make a frame for the bin to sit on top of or in. This could be a rectangle that supports the bin from the edges. Or it could support the bin from underneath with a U shape. It depends on the material you use. Mount the wheels in the centre on the long sides with about 6" of underneath clearance just as you would if the bin/crate were part of the frame.

Now you will have an almost finished trailer than should be balanced if you hold it. Now test it out and load something in it. Test to see if it is strong enough or you have to add more structure.

Next you make the arm which attaches the trailer to the hitch on your bike. Steel or wood this is pretty simple. Attach in to the middle on (what you decide is) the front of your trailer that you have so far. The easiest place to pull the trailer from is from the seat post. So you basically just need an arm that goes from the top/front of the bin support frame towards just lower than your seat. This should have a curve in it or even a right angle. You need to allow space for the wheel to pass underneath the bar. You need 6" clearance there also because as you ride a bike and turn or go over bumps that distance gets closer.

Finally you have to add the hitch. The hitch could be very complicated if you want it to be very convenient. But since you are using wood we will keep it simple. The easiest place to attach the trailer hitch to your bicycle is to your seat post. There are lots of options but it needs to wrap around the seat post. You could use old bicycle inner tube or bicycle tire to make a flexible linkage. Or you could drill a seat post sized hole in your thick wood. Keep in mind the trailer has to pivot in all directions ideally - up/down, side to side, and twisting. so you have to be creative.

You might also consider attaching the trailer hitch instead to a bike rear rack or "rat trap" style rear race rack. If you have one on your bike already. This will probably not be as strong as attaching to the seat post but it may be easier. If you do that make sure the pivot point that you attach to is exactly above the centre of the rear bicycle wheel because that will make it work b

How to build a miniature horse cart?

animal.lov

I want to build a miniature horse cart because I can't find one for less than 300. Any advice?

Answer
For $400-500 you can buy a metal "easy-entry" one already made and honestly I think it's the way to go. We've had our metal easy entry cart for 4 years or more and it's still fine other than that the seat vinyl was gnawed on by the goats. It's the kind that seats 2 adults. We bought a "size A mini" (or dog or goat) sized cart this year from American Cart and Harness and it's adorable. This size would carry one small adult or maybe two kids.

If you're good at working with metal or wood, though, you might still like to try to build your own. The trick is that you want the cart to be balanced so that not much weight is resting on the mini's back/withers and of course the cart needs to be both light and strong. If it were me, I'd go with the easy-entry style. The Meadowbrooks look cute, but are sometimes hard to get into, especially with a jumpy horse.

I think you can buy some cart components from American Cart and Harness.

Just one parting thought....if you can find the solid bicycle tires they are really worth it....no flats to worry about just when you're ready to ride. I love the look of wooden wheels, but haven't found any for a reasonable price.

I wish I knew of a place that offered a kit or a detailed schematic. The only person I know who built their own cart was a relative of our neighbors'- he built a little surrey-like wagon for their mini.

Email me if you have any more questions!

what are the different sizes in bmx bikes?

Nathan F

well im looking around for a bmx bike and wanted to know what is the size of a men's bmx bike would be.

Answer
Okay first off dont listen to those other kids that posted because any real rider knows haros are complete shit. Theres many different sizes of bmxes there 16inch wheels, 20inch wheels,
24inch wheels (cruisers). Theres also many different sized frames the two key parts of a frame that are going to make the bike feel big or small are CS length (chainstay) and TT length (toptube)
(look those up I dont want to explain what they are) so any ways most chainstays lengths vary from 13 inches to 14.25 inches and toptubes vary from 19.5 inches to 22 inches so the longer those tubes are the longer and more stable your bikes gonna feel.

good luck finding a bike.

What should I know about commuting via bicycle?

loved

My fiancee and I recently purchased a new home. It is close to the grocery store and our places of employment. I was thinking about buying a bicycle to commute to work and the grocery store. What are some basics that a first timer should know? i.e. Accessories I'll need, traffic basics, securing my bike, etc.
Oblivion: Grow up. I know how to ride a bike. I've just never used it as a means of commuting. Only during trail rides, etc.

Answer
The first thing you need to know is that your life is about to improve dramatically and in ways you may not even realize!

No gas. No insurance. No parking costs and bonus workout time so you might get to cancel that gym membership!

This is totally exciting and I am stoked you'll be joining me in the bike lane!

First the bike. Go test ride at your local bike shop and fearlessly ask a ton of questions. No intimidation allowed and never go to a big box store for your bike.

You need to make sure that your fitted properly for your ride. Have them fit you even if you don't purchase and give you the dimensions.

Now get a helmet and some simple front and rear lights - even if you don't think you'll ride at night... get them, put them on, use them!

Wear whatever you are comfortable in- there's no rule about lycra! - watch the chain for loose clothing. Experiment prior to your commute if you wear skirts - some are OK, others... well you can imagine. (I don't mind, but you might!)

You might want a basket or a bike rack with saddle bag(s) for the grocery store.

If there is a secure place at work to lock your bike (only you and coworkers have access) you can get by with a cable lock. If not find the best bike rack around and definitely use a "U Lock".

Do a Google search for "Sheldon Brown" - he's got more advice on this stuff too.

Try this site to plan a route or hook up with a local bike club online to see where you can get a map.

Does it rain a lot where you live? Fenders!!! 90% dryer I kid you not.

You might also join an online bike forum for more tips.

Good luck and happy riding!

What is the most comfortable mountain bike seat for a woman with a big bottom?

Myra G

I just bought a seat that looks comfortable but is not. Any suggestions???
yes, it has been a while since I have used a bike.

Answer
Hi Myra,

First let's get some basic terms squared away. Bike seats are called "saddles"... For the most part "seats" are found in bleachers, office buildings and in cars.

I have been an active cyclist since 1985, currently logging 200-250 miles per week... Now it is true that I am not a woman, nor do I have a wide bottom, but I can help you out a bit. Saddles are now being made women-specific. Most of these are narrower models, but as someone else pointed out, women naturally have a wider pelvic region (the whole birthing thing), so they will be shaped differently from a male saddle. If you went to a decent bike shop, you would see saddles with sections that look like they are missing, cut out or perhaps the maker forgot to finish building it. That however is the way they are suppose to look. The cut out region is to alleviate pressure on your pelvic region - and to weight weenies (what they call people who count every gram of every part that goes on their bikes) it is cool because that saddle will weigh less than solid ones.

If you weren't completely sold on a mountain bike, I would recommend a recumbent for true comfort while riding.. Those are the bikes that you sit in a very wide chair-like "seat", with your legs extended out to the pedals in front of you. Riding a recumbent would work certain muscle groups harder than a regular bike would. Your gluts (butt muscles) would be worked (abused - LOL) hard along with your leg muscles of course. The saddle on a recumbent is light-years more comfortable than a standard bike.

If you are already sold on the mountain bike idea, or perhaps you have one and saddle discomfort has become the principal issue at hand, then first thing I would recommend is to look at Performancebike.com. Click on the SADDLES link on the left. Then select WOMEN'S SADDLES. You will see a very wide shaped saddle there for sale for $39.99 (12% off) called "The Seat" by Ergo. It probably doesn't look anything like any saddle you have ever seen (and yes it is ok to call this one a SEAT! It is advertised as:

"Extra wide for unbelievable support and comfort"

"Short length provides a non-restrictive pedal stroke"

"Integrated rear reflectors for added visibility"

"Gel padding dissipates road vibration while providing plenty of padding for comfort"

Keep in mind that "The Seat" is a saddle that supports your body the same way as when you sit in a chair.

Shoot that almost sounds good enough for me! If it could recline and give me a massage I would be set! LOL! Just kidding of course.

Another thing to keep in mind that if you are riding a department store bicycle, you really should get properly fit on your bike. It sounds like you have a passion that makes you want to ride, but the dang pain in the butt part (sorry) has discomforted you and irked you enough to have you post a question here. A reliable bike shop can help you "Saddle Up" properly. They can tell if your saddle is too high or too far back. They can help if your crank arms are too long, or if the distance to your handlebar is too far away, too low or too high. All of the stated issues above can contribute to a sore backside.

Also on the Performance website you can see the Forté EasyRider Saddle. For the Forte EasyRider follow this link:

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=14747&PID=1204522

It too is on sale $19.99 (50% off the regular price)

You can also check out another famous online cycling catalog @ NASHBAR.COM for the following saddles:

Selle San Marco Travel Delux Womenâs Saddle

Selle Royal Ergo GEL Mid Cruiser Saddle

A little more insight can be found at: about.com (See below)

http://bicycling.about.com/od/equipment/a/saddlechoice.htm

If I can help further in any aspect of the sport please don't hesitate to contact me... HOW? Just answer any of the questions that "I ask" with the answer "BIKE HELP NEEDED" and I will do my best to get you the answers you seek.

I understand this could be a little misleading but let's just put it this way. I want to buy a pair of barefoot shoes because I think they might be better for me than the running shoes that I wear now, which are just basic New Balance running shoes. Which are also 5 plus years old. I know I don't want the toe shoes. I find those ridiculous. A few of my family members have Merrell walking shoes and they love them. I've tried them on too and I also like them a lot. So I looked into their barefoot shoes and they have mixed reviews of course. I have also heard about this vivobarefoot brand which seems nice even though from the looks of it you're paying for foam. I haven't seen them in person so maybe the pictures are misleading. Also I see New Balance has a version too. Anyway here is my situation. I love lightweight shoes and the majority of my running will be on a trail in the woods that is basically small pebble. Nothing too rough. I haven't thought about running on concrete. I live in a city so sometimes I run the sidewalks but I don't plan on doing that too often. Other than running I also ride my bike in which case I also like a lightweight show. So overall, can anybody recommend a good barefoot shoe for me? Brand and model if you can, and maybe a good place to buy online. I can barely find any in stores and the only pair I did find were Merrells which fit quite well in a size 10. Thanks in advance

Answer
There is only one barefoot solution: barefoot.

Wearing any kind of footwear is not being barefoot, so dont kid yourself.

What can I do to get information about a Western Flyer road bike?

dannycrous

Answer
There are no online resources to give you this info but I can give you a hint.

Western Flyer midweight bikes (with wider tires, fenders, and maybe a tank) were made by Murray in the US while the kids bikes and lightweight models were made in West Germany, Poland, and perhaps Hungary by the same company that made Derby, Executive, and President bicycles. There were also some made by AMF in the US.

So, look on the headbadge and see where it was made then post it- preferably with a picture of the right side (the chain side)- and I'll edit my answer.

Answer
You need to lose 50 lbs which you can do in just 5 mo. with this low-carb food/exercise plan:

Breakfast: Cook 9-grain cereal (from health food store) in water with rolled oats and wheat bran. Make a pot of it on weekends and nuke 1/2 cup each morning. Then stir in low fat milk or yogurt, banana, walnuts and berries. Drink hot Ovaltine. Breakfast should be your largest meal of the day to raise blood sugar level which falls during the night.

Lunch: Egg, tuna or turkey ½ sandwich on multi-grain (not just whole wheat) bread with bean or alfalfa sprouts, yogurt, fresh fruit. If you had meat loaf for dinner, bring a meat loaf sandwich on whole grain bread (NO mayo). On cold days, a squatty thermos of hot chili, split peas with ham, or beef stew.

Snacks: Fresh (not canned) fruit. Nothing ever from a vending machine.
Fruit smoothies.

Dinner: salad with white meat chicken and fresh (not canned) veggies: tomatoes, 2 kinds of lettuce, 2 kinds of shredded cabbage, shredded or sliced carrots, alfalfa or bean sprouts, zucchini, green or red peppers, hard boiled eggs, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, tofu, cottage cheese, spinach...Instead of dressing, squeeze 1/4 tomato over it.

Or homemade bean/vegetable soups; great way to recycle leftovers.
Or grilled fish with steamed veggies.

Or omelet: In blender, whip together eggs, tofu, cottage cheese, onions, garlic powder. Cook with mushrooms, chopped tomatoes and green or red peppers.

Avoid junk food, fast foods, gluten, pastries, desserts, syrup (even canned fruit in syrup), peanut butter, fat/grease (pork, wieners, chops, bacon, salami, pizza, chips, fries), pasta, potatoes, ramen, popcorn, white bread, rice, canned veggies, ice cream (itâs lard + chemicals), chips, tobacco, alcohol (kills brain cells).coffee (carcinogenic). no oil except olive and mac nut. Sodas (loaded with toxins; leads to stroke, obesity, kidney damage, high BP and inhibits bone growth in kids), anything with sugar (cancer cells feed on sugar, it wreaks havoc on your liver, mucks up metabolism, impairs brain function, makes you more susceptible to heart disease and diabetes),
To keep your skin clear, drink water, tea, veggie juice, unsweetened fruit juice.

Join a gym; they have all the equipment and staff to show you how to use it to get the look you want to achieve, but you have to ask them. Much cheaper than buying your own equipment. Go hiking, biking, jogging, bowling, swimming, rowing, jump rope, play tennis, badminton, volleyball, soccer, jumping jacks, lift weights, trampoline? To tone your tummy, do sit ups, push ups, pull ups, leg lifts, butt raises and crunches.

For more energy, take Super B complex. Try appetite suppressants.

My school's dress code is strict...outfit ideas?

unicornxma

Okay so I'm going into my freshman year and not just me, but a lot of people (even adults) think my dress code is too strict. Most people I know that go to the school have said that they enforce it quite firmly, which sucks because most of the things I own don't comply to the dress code. These are just the basics:
â¢No tank tops, spaghetti straps, tube tops, halter tops, racerback tops, or crop tops.
â¢Jeggings, leggings, sweatpants, yoga pants, and spandex/biking pants are not permitted.
â¢No manufactured or self-created holes, rips, or tears in clothing (including jeans).
â¢You cannot show any portion of your back or shoulders, and cleavage shall not be visible. (You can't even wear a top with a lace back with a cami underneath).
â¢Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be 4 inches above the knee or longer.
â¢No spikes or chains.
With that being said, how am I supposed to go back-to-school shopping if most things stores sell don't comply? Especially if most things I own don't either xD I'm not a sI*t and I get hot easily which sucks for me aha. So if anyone has some cute outfit ideas then that would be great!!! I'm into kind-of a mix between punk and girly, so a good example would be "pastel goth"-related fashion. For example, crosses, flowers, black&white, pastel colors, (I also enjoy neon colors), skinny jeans, maxi skirts&circle skirts, studs, tie-dye, cats, etc. Best answer will go to my favorite outfits / most variety :) Thank you guyss~ <3

Answer
I did that for 13 years!

Dress Codes should be enforced, so not one try to compete with the other, and I vote for UNIFORMS in all schools. Some people can't afford to buy new clothes, so they look 'normal' to other kids, and because of that, they ended up getting BULLIED!

It's time for you to go shopping, bring your list of Dress Codes with you! Ask a clerk to help you. I'm sure they still sell them, clothes I used to wear in the 60's.

BTW: Vintage is in, if you shopped @ Thrift stores, vintage stores, YOU'LL find tons of those!

HOW TO SPOT REAL VINTAGE:
1. Label will say: Made in the USA, (place of origin where you live) UK, Italy, places like that.
2. If it says: Made in China, Mexico, Turkey, the Philippines -vintage re-created from the 1920's.
3. Smells like they've been inside a trunk, attic, not as 'fresh as a daisy'.
4. It's very thin, signs of wear out, rips, stitching didn't pull the whole thread out when you pull a single thread.
5. Vintage zipper, buttons, lace. They don't look modern, plastic or reproduction.

When you see it, you'll KNOW IT'S the boots or dress or skirt for you. On VINTAGE:
Katy Perry on Vogue cover July 2013:
"She is in a girly-girl's flower-print dress in shades of mauve - is it vintage? Or is it a vintage-inspired knockoff of a 1960 dress? She shakes her head: Ach! It's just a . . . . little dress I found,' she says. "one of those little dresses everyone has. That you just throw on. And you're dressed."
