How do I loosen really rusty bolts on license plate?

Dan

I have to remove bolts from my car to get the license plate off, but they're really rusty. I'm really limited for tools too, all I've got is a couple of small screwdrivers and a hammer. My uncle's got a blowtorch, but I doubt he'll let me use it. I thought I could chisel away around the screw, and make it fit on the new car with a washer, but that might take too long. Also, a screwdriver won't lock into the groove, it's too rusted over. What do you think I should do?

Answer
WD-40

Water Displacement #40. The product began from a search for a rust
Preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was
Created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical
Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a "water
Displacement" compound. They were successful with the fortieth
Formulation, thus WD-40. The Corvair Company bought it in bulk to protect
Their atlas
Missile parts. Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is
Nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you.

When you read the "shower door" part, try it. It's the first thing that
Has ever cleaned that spotty shower door. If yours is plastic, it works
Just
As well as glass. It's a miracle! Then try it on your stovetop... Voila!
It's now shinier than it's ever been. You'll be amazed. Here are some of
The
Uses:

1) Protects silver from tarnishing.
2) Removes road tar and grime from cars.

And bumpers."
38) The favorite use in the state of New York -- WD-40 protects the
Statue of Liberty from the elements.
39) WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a LITTLE on live bait or lures and you
Will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it's a lot cheaper than the
Chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose. Keep in mind
Though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not
Allowed in some states.
40) Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and
Stops the itch.
41) WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and
Wipe with a clean rag.
42) Also, if you've discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and
Dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick
Spots with WD-40 and re-wash. Presto! Lipstick is gone!
43) If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace the
moisture and allow the car to start.

P. S. The basic ingredient is FISH OIL.

P. P. S. I keep a can of WD-40 in my kitchen cabinet over the stove. It
is good for oven burns or any other type of burn. It takes the burned
feeling away and heals with NO scarring.

Thinking of ways to deter vehicles from driving 2 inches from us at high rates of speed while we walk/run?

DKA

Thinking of ways to deter vehicles from driving 2 inches from us at high rates of speed while we walk/run around the lake even though we are all the way over on the correct side and including times we have kids with us. We have thought of sharpie markers, pepper spray (paint damage, maybe?). Any other ideas? Even if we got the license plate number do police have to have "proof" they put us in danger?

Answer
Make yourself highly visible. Wear reflective vests, flashing lights, even tie a helium balloon to your wrist or to the stroller. I got a pair of cheap flashing lights (originally for bicycles) which I tie to my ankles when I run at night. This helps tremendously when I try to cross the road; without it no one stops, not even at marked and well-lit crossings. It seems the periodic flash is enough to draw their attention from their cellphone or daydream or whatever else it is they're doing behind the wheel while going 50 in a residential area.

Don't try and get aggressive. You will always lose to a 2000-lb vehicle. And punishment by the police after the fact still puts you in danger. What you want to achieve is elimination of the hazard in the first place.

Talk with the local authority of installing speed bumps on this part of the road.

Family of 4--2 adults, 2 10 yr. old kids. August 2007. Something pretty nice, like a 4 star--NOTHING excessive like over $500/night for a plain, standard room! Something cool, good location, friendly staff--to assist in booking tours and tickets for attractions. Hyatt Century City? Beverly Hilton? W Hotel LA--Westwood? Shutters on the Beach? Loews? Casa Del Mar? Any of these OR anything else?????????

Answer
The advantage of the Beverly Hilton is it is centrally located to most things you will want to see and do. A double bed regular non smoking room is $392 per day and has a lot of parking and real good concierge service, so they can help you get to where you want to go....It is at the intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica Blvd...Have Fun....Oh, and it has a great pool for the kids....BTW, it is owned by Merv Griffin and has a Trader Vic's restaurant in it....Check on line for discount codes and coupons...With a 2 year old I don't think you will qualify for AARP, but you can try AAA codes....here are some things to do there:

Travel to LA questions?

?Who Am I?

I'm flying into LA from Australia with 2 teenagers. We will arrive on a Friday morning and leave late on Sunday night for our onward trip. The kids are 14 & 16. What should we do in that amount of time? I need to know possibilities without a car too, as I have not yet decided whether to rent one.
Also, I have been looking hotels. I need something for under $80/night. There is a Travelodge in Hollywood- any opinions? Some others I have found are in Reseda and Pico Rivera - are these safe areas? I know they are not central, but if I have to rent a car, I will.
Any advice on travel to LA would be very much appreciated. (Also, which areas should we stay out of?)
EDIT* I've already found several hotels in LA for under $80. Most of them have good reviews and seem to be in safe areas, I'm looking for the opinion of people who are familiar with the area. Thanks
EDIT#2*

OK, do you feel that we may be better off staying in Anaheim (where accommodation seems more reasonably priced anyway) and then renting a car for a day to see the sights like Hollywood walk of fame, santa monica etc.

Answer
The area around LA is pretty bad. Coastal cities are safest, LAX is coastal but right at the airport inside its limits is what you need. Get the car too. Dont go outside of home base which is the airport for hotels. Spend more if you need too.
Pay for the insurance also on the rental car. Try renting from Enterprise, they run a weekend special on the car, its a friday to monday rental, just park the car safe on sunday. Lock the keys in the car with the paperwork and then call Enterprise and let them know that the keys are under the seat.
Do you want to see our beaches with shopping areas? (cheapest option)
Do you want to see Hollywood and go to Universal Studios for thier movie theme park?
(more expensive)
Are you wanting to go to Disneyland and then beach and shop it?
Ok heres some itenerarys to make driving and timing good for you ok.
FRIDAY ITENERARY
Go to Santa Monica Pier. Drive PCH HWY1 north and eventually you will find the Pier, it has a ferris wheel. Park and relax, explore. Then right down the road is what is called the Prominade. Its a street where no driving is allowed and theres fun shops all along it. It is a few blocks n and east over, anyone at the pier will tell you the best place to park or how to walk over its so close.
Now you can just stay and PCH HWY1 and go up to Venice Beach too which isnt that far north of where Santa Monica Pier is, and you all will enjoy that also. All 3 can be done in one day or any combination. Its all generally non freeway driving and makes it very easy to return to your hotel at the airport.

FULL DAY Itenerary.
Go to Hollywood Blvd, and go to say Ripleys Believe it or Not Museum. Then travel on and go to Universal studios. Hollywood Blvd is basically a road to drive down. You will see places like Ripleys and others to stop at or stores etc. Then your simply traveling to an amusement park that is interesting and fun. It is not as huge as disneyland, so its something you can enjoy without rushing trying to take it all in.
SUNDAY
Would you all enjoy a few hours at a museum? The La Brea Tar Pits is a nice one to go to, its smaller, all about dinosaurs and there are tar pit displays where they pull the bones out of, not pricy and not a full day adventure either. You could then go to Rodeo Dr and oogle all the designers stores, where the stars shop. Its just one or two small blocks, but its neat seeing like a pair of gloves for 5000.00 and laugh at the prices, and oogle the beautiful clothes!
The cities you listed are unrealistic for a safe family stay. The prices are great, they will be drug infested area, not safe to park or have your family in for the most part. Driving through gang areas is very dangerous and its too hard to explain where the ghetto and gangs are, they have as much of the area of LA if not more than the safer areas. I am a parent would like you to not even have to see those areas, its not even safe to stop and ask directions, so staying along the coast line and then having itenerary like I suggested, keeps you out of harms way.
Our beach areas are the main focus around LAX and the fun shopping areas are the only places near by.
Renting a car is cheaper than a taxi with all the traffic seriously.
IF you have no money for a car and need to taxi to a hotel with something to do at the hotel, the only place I can think of to go is to the Venice or Santa Monica Pier area and you must stay on main roads. You can rent bicycles and ride down the beach walk way for miles, sun bathe, shop and be ok staying in those areas. Look on a map and get hotels at the beach, not just the city of Santa Monica. I hope this helps.

What is the difference between deja vu and premonition?

kids bike horn

kids bike horn image

Jesca

Answer
premonitions are hints into the future where as deja vu is a feeling of repeating the past (or rather an instance of the past).

For example, if a red car drives by and honks its horn at a kid on his bike and you have the strange feeling that that situation has happened before then that is deja vu.

If you had a dream that a plane was going to crash and so you didn't get on, then that might be a premonition.

What are some good song to listen to while cycling?

Briana

Oops it's indoor cycling.

Answer
If you're listening to music while you cycle, I hope you're cycling in the house. Stopping your ears with head-banging music while riding a bicycle is extremely dangerous. You can't hear traffic coming up on you until they are there. I was run off the road, brushed by a car, and had the crap scared out of me because I had headphones on while riding my bike some years ago. The driver didn't honk until he was right beside me and then laid on his horn. Of course, it startled me badly enough to make me run off the road and dump the bike. The driver? A teenage kid who thought it was funny. There was one more time before I learned to leave my ears open to the sounds around me. NEVER, NEVER COVER YOUR EARS WHILE RIDING A BICYCLE!

Ask some of the professional riders and they'll tell you the same thing.

Can I sue the police?

kids bike edmonton
 on Boys 12
kids bike edmonton image
Q. About a week or two ago my friends and I were skateboarding, longboarding, and biking in a parking lot on the south side of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Two people started yelling at us and told us we had to leave because it was private property, so we left (I'm not lieing to seem like a good kid with a better case, this is the %100 truth).

My friend and I decided to split up from the group of three other people we were hanging out with and go beatbox and rap old songs by Eazy-E, Snoop Dogg, NWA, and Tupac. When out of nowhere a police car pulled up right beside us, with the brake calibers burning. They quickly got out and asked us what we were doing. I replied, "We were just hanging out, we were going to go sit over there and rap." The officer then told asked if we had been in the parking lot behind us. we told them yes. They then asked if we had gone into the parkade, and we replied no. they asked for ID and one officer started typing our names into the computer, while the other continued to watch us. We were told to sit on the grass and wait, so we did. (by this time we were told there was a complaint about kids going into the parkade) The officer asked us if we were with anybody else, and we told them yes, three buddies, one from out of town. The officer then asked what was in my backpack, I told him I had some cologne, and a few other things, I couldn't exactly remember. The cop then asked if he could see, so I agreed. (I know I could have said no, but I really just didn't want to deal with this guy anymore) So I unzipped my backpack, and he looked in, asking me to pull things out, and I did. (I had a few loose papers that I had never cleaned out of my bag, a Dollorama cap gun frum a school project, two bottles of cologne, a flash USB drive, and a baton) The officer asked to see the baton, swung it out, and said, "You are under arrest for possession of an illigal weapon." He then asked me to stand by the cruiser, so I did, and he placed hand cuffs on me. I then told him I had bought it at Sanfransisco in West Edmonton Mall twice. but he refused to listen. My friend then butted in as I was saying it a third time, and vouched for me saying he was with me. (also the truth) The officer then turned to me and said alright then. meanwhile many other cruisers came and all the officers just stood in a circle and talked for a while. I was told to sit on the grass, where I was eaten alive by mosquitoes. Eventually the officer asked where he could find the other people we were with, and we tried calling them, but one of the kids lived across the street, so my friend pointed, and two officers escorted my two friends, and the one friends' parents out. One of the officers was carrying my baton, and my friends dad pointed to me, asked something, and then the officer replied looked at the baton, waved it to him, and then brought it back to his hand. Somewhere along the line we were told that we were being detained for break and enter, and I was under arrest.

Eventually my friends dad asked if My friend and I could get off the grass because the mosquitoes were swarming us. (previously an officer had reached into the trunk of the cruiser infront of us and sprayed himself with mosquitoe reppellant.) Another officer who came out of nowhere said sure, realeased me from my hand cuffs, and let us stand on the cement. The officer that arrested me then came back, said that there were no cars found broken into in the parkade, so we were free to go, and then told me that he was just going to confenscate my baton, and that would be the end of that, a small conversation followed, where I was told not to carry any weapons, becuase they are for empowering the user.

Here is my list of why I want to sue:
1. They had stopped us for no reason, we had never been in the parkade, and if the complaint said we were in the parkade, then they had no reason to hold us.
2. If I was placed under arrest with the intent to be let free, why was I placed in handcuffs. This is public embarrassment.
3. I bought the baton at a store, if it is for sale in a store, how could it be illigal.
4. They took my baton, and didn't arrest me? shouldn't I be getting it back?
5. We were forced to sit on the grass where the mosquitoes were, not even given the choice of standing, or sitting on the cement, or offered mosquitoe repellant. This seems like cruel and unusual punishment.
6. We had been detained for around 15 minutes before they told us why.
7. According to the YCJA (Youth Criminal Justice Act) my identity should be protected if I commited a crime. I'm not %100 sure, but I would assume that one of the officers had told my friends parents that I had committed a crime, and that it was possession of that baton.
8. We were detained for an unreasonable reason. Break and Enter. We were on a parking lot. To me that seems like the best they can do is tresspassing, That aside we left when we were told it
By the way I basically want to due it to make a point, I understand your answers so far, but I am doing this to tell cops they can't be dicks about everything. And My biggest point is that they told somebody that I was under arrest, that is illegal and I know it! somebody canadian please help out.

Answer
You're in Canada. Who knows what goes on up there. See, here in the US, we had the courage to kick the Brits out, which means we now have a Constitution and rights. Americans have learned to use that great legacy of law and freedom to sue each other over every little injury, real or imagined. You guys apparently enjoyed blowing King George, so you get whatever's good for you.

All that aside, I don't think you have a case. What are your damages? Your feelings are hurt? Listen kid, everyone on this board has been stopped by some pig and harassed. It's called life. Chalk it up as a learning experience. Just thank god you're not black in south central LA.

Sue? Ha! Boy, you definitely sound like one of us!

I am coaching a team for kids from 10-15 years old and want to give out awards at the end of the season...like MVP. What are some other awards I could give out?
I do plan to have an award for every racer

Answer
Get in touch with the local importers who deal with bike stuff. Where I one such is called monza imports and ask for some freebies. Also local bike shops and get stickers and odds and ends that don't cost much and do up some grab bags so all the kids can have one.

Don't just give out 'most improved' and such as while it is great to be achieving I find sometimes this only focusses on one or two riders and they get the pats on the back the whole way through. Did anyone have a big off in training as you could give out a 'bent handlebars award' One of the clubs I am involved with actually has this and it really is a set of bent handlebars. So make a few fun awards like this as well.

A lot of coaches I know get the kids to balance on their bikes and try to have a slow race. Those with good balance can stay upright with the bike basically not moving for ages. See who is best at this and give them an award. So you could make the end of year a fun things as well. Have a race where they have to start by putting their boots on before running to their bike and doing a lap. Again you can award a prize for it. You can do a tag team race where you put the riders in groups spreading the ability out and making sure each group has a 50cc bike to slow them down. See who gets over the finish line first with each member of the group doing a lap.

This way the day is fun and the kids go home, some with real achievement awards and others with just a fun award.

I'm looking for a new hobby. As a kid I used to really enjoy biking. Now I want to take up mountain biking. What is everything I will need to start? What gear and accessories? Also any general knowledge or advice for a beginer would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Step 1. Do you have at least $500 to $550 for a decent entry level bike? Yep, I said entry level.
http://www.fujibikes.com/bike/details/nevada_17_d

You'll also need an under-seat bag to store a spare tube, tire levers and multi-use folding bike tool. A good frame pump or mini-pump & of course water bottle cage & bottle.

And don't forget a good helmet. This is a decent one for the price.

Notice that most kids are today are doing the same or better stuff now than pros of the early 200s.

This is mostly because of the weight change in BMX.

This is one of the craziest BMX bikes you could buy, for street, dirt, park. This bike does not on the other hand stretch the imagination. It is very straight forward. If you wanted to spice things up you could get a free coaster, or hook up a left side drive system. but i figure i have given you a good sampling. Regardless, this is nearing the topmost shelf of BMX..

Consider this

My friend just recently told me not to buy this bike, because it was "on the low end side" of road bikes...

Last i checked a hard tail MTB of entry level quality would set you back at least $1600.

Consider yourself lucky to have such an affordable interest to BMX ; )

Is there a trailer for 3 kids? Would it be ok to have a "trail-a-bike" type option then connect a trailer to that? Or get a child seat plus the trailer? Kids are 4 mos, 2.5 yrs, and 5 yrs old.. The 5 yr old can ride a bike, but very slowly and not very far.. Thanks!

Answer
You have a few option, although I agree with those who mention 4 mos may be a little young for any kind of biking. The only way I would bike with infants is if I can either carry them very close to me, or if I can strap them into a reclined seat where they don't have to fully support their head while going over bumps etc.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Bend,OR&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=40.460237,67.763672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Bend,+Deschutes,+Oregon&ll=44.05157,-121.315155&spn=0.28771,0.529404&t=h&z=11 Front mounted seat.

In Denmark they often ride with the youngest in a front basket or cargo bay laying down in blankets.

I've tried my kids in trailers at 9 mos and found it didn't work for me with any of them because I couldn't watch how they were doing and couldn't attend to their needs at all without stopping, dismounting etc. AND until over a year they didn't do well enough with head control. The trailers actually ride fairly jouncy and bumpy because the kids are sitting right on top of the wheels.

Moving on....

I have seen people do the tag along and the trailer, but for regular use it seems to long and unwieldy to me.

I'd go the cargo bike / long tail route: Madsen Cycles has a model that seats 4 with seat belts (takes the optional extra seat to get to 4 - standard is 2) http://www.madsencycles.com/

How to do outdoor activities when you have kids?

Neyo

I have 2 kids and they are toddlers.I miss doing trekking, hiking and rafting activities..We do not have a nearby family but are willing to have babysitters. How much do baby sitters usually cost for a whole day?

Also, any tips to still have fun in life despite kids is appreciated.

Answer
If they're toddlers, they're still little enough to strap to your backs and go for a hike. Let them walk as much as possible, and you'll be amazed at how much they'll enjoy nature and how much they'll discover. I know plenty of people who hike and camp with small children. You might not be able to go as far as you used to, and you'll have to stop more often for snacks and/or diaper changes, but you can still have a good time.

My youngest is 4, and we have recently tried kayaking/canoeing, and he loved it, so it may not be long until you can do those things, too.

And if you like biking, just get a couple of child bike seats or a child trailer, and they'll probably love to ride along.

Actually, the more you gradually introduce them to these activities when they're young, the more interested they'll be in doing them as they get older.

I am 11 1/2 years old, female, and I weigh 179 lbs. I am always the one being picked on. I hate not having any friends! I'm sick of not feeling good either. I want to be able to run that mile in p.e class! I want to be able to keep up to all the toher kids. I'm sad, lonely, and fat! I want to lose weight before it becomes more of a problem!

I have no energy, and no friends.

PLease, Can you guys help me. I'm tired of being made fun of.

I have a horse, and I ride. My cupboards are bare, but my family eats out EVERY SINGLE NIGHT! AND MORNING

Answer
It all comes down to eating less and exercising.

Try starting with lower impact exercise. Your heavier weight might make you more prone to injuries.

Get yourself a bicycle and get riding. Great exercise, low impact. Also, if you have access to a pool, swimming might be good, although it is not as good for weight loss.

While you might be a little young, you might want to consider light weight training. Start with your body weight with squats, pullups, situps, pushups, etc. When you lose some weight, try some free weights and running.

If your school has a sports program, try going out for a team. I don't think they become really competitive until high school.

If you have a game machine that has Dance Dance Revolution, use it. I've heard that is a great and fun way for kids to control their weight.

Your family's habit of eating out every day is both expensive and unhealthy. I'd be suprised if the rest of your family wasn't overweight as well. You might have to start buying some of your own food for your own health if your parents refuse to take their responsibilities seriously. Maybe you should call child protective services. I think the way your parents feed you can be considered parental negligence.

In general, eat more salads, greens, vegetables, etc. Pass on white starchy foods and eat more whole grains and lean meats. Above all, avoid all processed foods. For example, if you eat popcorn, don't eat microwave popcorn, learn to make your own and you can control the butter and salt.

Above all, avoid sugary drinks! They are poison and probably do more to keep you overweight than anything. Stick to water, some milk and real juice and unsweetened tea.

But at the same time, remember to let yourself have a treat once in a while. If you want cake or ice-cream, eat some. But don't go overboard. Listen to your body and don't eat when you are no longer hungry and don't eat until you are full. You do not want to feel deprived at any time, nor do you want to feel stuffed.

You are in a vicious cycle. You overeat because you have low self-esteem. You have low self-esteem because you have no friends. You have no friends because you don't have the energy to do the things they do. You have no energy because you are overweight. You are overweight because you overeat and the cycle starts again.

Remember that the process will be slow. Do not get discouraged when you don't see results overnight. If you do start exercising and eating better, you will first feel much better about yourself, then you will start to look better. If you have a bad day and overeat, get over it and start anew the next day.

Good luck. Hopefully by this time next year you will be in a better state of mind and fitness. Remember that you are responsible for your own happiness.

BTW, check out the link below."Mistress Krista" is a Canadian who has a great site on women's fitness with lots of resources. It is geared towards weightlifting, but it might still help you.

Best pocket bike for kids?

Asia D

I want to purchase a pocket bike, mini dirt bike, or mini quad for my nephew's graduation present. He is 6 years old, about 60 lbs, average Height. I want to know the best thing to get him, if there are any with speed lock-outs or remote shut offs. A few good name brands would be awesome. I also need something I can get training wheels for. I'm looking to spend no more than 500. Please no comments about how he doesn't need one or that he needs to be supervised he is well taken care and we understand this isn't a toy. I just need advice on what to buy. Thank you!

Answer
Pocket bikes are Chinese made knock off's/clones of Japanese and European bikes. They are inferior to the bike they are cloned from. They do not have the reliability, dependability, quality or craftsmanship of the bikes they are cloned from.

With that said, I would recommend you look into a Japanese or European bike. He will fit on a 50cc to a 65cc bike. Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and KTM all make mini-bikes.

Since you do not have a lot to spend, you will have to look used. Check Ebay, Craigslist, CycleTrader and BikeFinds.

If you go with a used older bike, Honda used to make a MR 50 2-stroke and an XR75 4-stroke. The XR75 is built like iron and will last for your nephew's children.

The Yamaha PW50 has a restrictor that can be removed.

When it comes to training wheels, just Google mini-bike training wheels. There are a lot of different ones out there. Example: http://gokartsusa.com/EZ-Bike-Mini-Motorcycle-Training-Wheels.aspx
Training wheels are not cheap, they cost around $150. You can also look for used training wheels on Ebay and Craigslist.

If your nephew can ride a bicycle, he will be able to ride a dirt bike. I am not a fan of quads. When I taught my children to ride, I also let them ride my buddies quads. They all preferred dirt bikes to quads. Quads are super easy to learn to ride, but are very easy to tip over and if they do not keep their feet on the pegs can get run over by their own machine. Quads are also heavier than dirt bikes and if the child flips the quad, they may not be able to get our from underneath it without help.

This is the motorcycle racing section, so we mainly only recommend racing machines, but since he is just starting out a true mini-bike from say Sears or Pep Boys might fit the bill fine. These mini-bikes brand new cost under $400. Have large 4-stroke lawn mower engines on them and are perfect for trail riding and basic transportation. If your nephew likes riding though, he will outgrow the mini-bike within a summer.

Don't forget riding gear. Helmet, goggles and a pair of riding boots. Goggles, gloves, shoulder pads with chest protector, kidney belt, armored riding pants and racing jersey can come later. You can find used gear at Ebay, Craigslist, garage sales and flea markets. Does he need the protective gear for a mini-bike? Probably not, but a helmet and goggles are the minimum he should have.

If he ever needs tips on riding or maintenance, tell him to check Youtube. The amount of information on there is unbelievable. He can learn everything from fixing a flat to rebuilding an engine.

Mine was Ugg boots for my daughters... I know shame on me buying 2.5 year old Uggs but they looked so cute stomping around in them.. to make a long story short my kids play in the snow a lot and they did not even last our whole winter. My 7 year old son got an Ipod... lost it a few weeks after! Sure it will turn up but until then... whats the most expensive thing you bought your child that was unnecessary?

Answer
A bike trailer. Similar to this:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/InStep-Quick-N-EZ-Bicycle-Trailer/11072523?wmlspartner=GPA&sourceid=44444444440292013308

My daughter screamed in it while my husband pulled it with his bike and she thrashed around enough to slip out of the harness. She does like being pushed in it with her brother but when it is not attached to the bike. It works as a double stroller too but it is impracticable to bring anywhere. It does not fold easily or flat enough to fit in the trunk.

What are those things called that you pull kids in on the back of a bike they look like tents? and seat 2 kids?

I am wanting to start biking as a family this summer and i am trying to buy one of those things you pull your kids in behind your bike online but i have no idea what they are called

Answer
It's a child's Trailer. You can spend anywhere from a couple of hundred up to five or six hundred dollars for one at a bike shop or If you do not want to spend a fortune try the InStep Take 2 Bike Trailer http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5679648 from walmart $79.95 InStep makes trailers for those looking for a more affordable multi-use child trailer with more reasonable prices and yes you can buy them other places other than walmart.

Instep site: http://www.instep.net/Product/Bicycle_Trailers/
Burley Trailer site: http://www.bicycletrailers.com/Featured-Brands/Burley/index.cat?gclid=CLjlovG0s58CFQ-bnAodoBXX1g

The amount of money you spend should be based on how much you're actually going to use the trailer and the weight of the kids, all trailers have weight ratings, most up to 100lbs so be sure to check those out. If you buy the Burley it will have quick release hubs and sealed bearings and take down ability for storage which may or may not matter to you but it will be a better built trailer but also a lot more expensive. It's like everything else in cycling you get what you pay for.

Any advise welcome, im looking for a second hand field bike for my 10 year old daughter, there are so many different options, but it does seem that the what are called " child bikes" seem to have a seat height of around 24 inches. Can anyone recommend and ideal size that is not too big but will last a few years

Answer
well stated slipknot!!!

xr or crf 70 / 80 / 100 depending totally on her height and inseam. should be able to easily touch with both feet when she is sitting on the bike. this will enable her to gain balance and confidence while learning how to ride.

easiest thing is go to a bike shop and have her sit on several different models and sizes... then watch local newspaper classified, Craigslist in the area(s) you are willing to drive to. you should be able to find a decent used 4 stroke that will last a long time with low maintenance. then merely trade up as she grows.

as slipknot stated, drz, klx (both virtually same bike, even parts interchange on most), ttr would all be reliable bikes. there are 2 stroke race bikes in the same size ranges (50/60/80/85/100) but these are typically higher strung racing bikes but they will also have higher performance engine, brakes, suspension and lighter weight.

I need to come up with a problem and a proposed solution. Unfortunately, I can only have one solution.

At first, I though childhood obesity. My solution was throwing out video games and electronics to encourage children to participate in sports. However, I didn't have enough to write about.

Suggestions??
DUE TOMORROW!

Answer
Here is some information to help you with your chosen topic. You should be able to get way more information than you need on the topic of child obesity.
--------------------------------------------

The obesity epidemic among youth today only continues to escalate. Due to the increase in modern technology, more forms of entertainment involve sitting rather than moving. Children are exposed to more computers, video games, movies and television than ever before, which in turn decreases the overall time spent expending daily calories. The resulting weight gain among our youth heightens their risk for possible heart disease, cancer, diabetes and more. This makes it all the more important for children to start exercising as early as possible. Besides physical benefits, such as improved bone and muscle strength, exercise is also shown to also improve oneâs emotional and psychological state

By taking up physical exercise early in life, children have the advantage of a leaner, stronger figure, with lower risks of obesity. Running, bicycling, skating and swimming are several simple options that allow for aerobic activity, which improves overall heart strength. Stretching exercises will foster a studentâs flexibility and improve the functioning of joints. Push-ups and pull-ups help build muscle strength, as well as weightlifting workouts at the school gym. Kids can get a head start in managing their physical health by choosing from a wide selection of exercise options, which will only prove more beneficial as they mature

Students spend the majority of their school day in the classroom with limited time for physical activity. As important as it is for children to be well-rounded on subjects that increase class performance, there is another type of education that is just as important for their overall well-being. Physical education is a chance for children to put down their pencils and have fun as they work toward staying fit. It can also be the ideal outlet kids need to let loose, while providing them with lifelong benefits unlike any other in their schedule. Studies show that children who have physical outlets coupled with academics perform better in other areas of their life as well.

More schools are sharing the responsibility to encourage student fitness with their enhanced physical education programs. For example, SPARK, a well established and award-winning public health organization, is combating obesity through providing educators with research-based physical activity programs for Pre-K â 12 grade students. SPARK focuses on assisting teachers with implementing school games related to aerobics, jogging, sports and more. Teachers receive curriculum, training and equipment that outlines how to get the most out of each physical activity that their classes participate in. Emphasis is placed on proper nutrition for students, as well as the positive effects activities have on academic performance.

Schools that provide physical education for youth with an emphasis on the positive instill a lifelong motivation to stay fit. The American Heart Association recommends that children engage in a minimum of one hour of physical activity per day, and schools can easily assist in meeting that goal by providing just half of that important time. In addition, such classes help build teamwork among students and help participants find interests that they may choose to further pursue. It is important to note that studies have demonstrated that kids who are physically fit also perform better on standardized testing.

etc etc etc

What´s the best way to teach reading and writing to my 8 year-old?

brunnalin

I have a 8 year-old boy, and I´d like to know what´s the best way to teach him how to read and write. Is it buy flash card, pc software educational games, what could I do to help him understand the sound of each word and letter?
Thanks.

Answer
Because of the information you gave in your previous question, I know that your son has significant speech and language delays. Based on this information, I would suggest that you not rely only on phonetics based instruction. Lots of kids who are delayed in speech and language have a very difficult time with phonics - first with learning the sounds associated with the different consonants, vowels, blends, digraphs, etc., and then with the ability to fluently merge those sounds into a word. It's a very complex process that depends largely on skills that are delayed in your son.

I highly recommend a sight vocabulary approach to reading for children who do not have strengths in speech and language. In a sight vocabulary program, the child learns to look at a word and say it, not to sound it out. As a special education teacher, I use multiple approaches to reading instruction, dependent on the abillities of the particular child, and I have specifically found the Edmark Reading Program to be very successful with many kids who could not benefit from a phonics-based approach. (Type Edmark Reading Program into a search engine and you will find lots of info and sources to purchase the program if you are interested.) The child learns one new word at a time in a very systematic way. In just a few lessons, the child is reading short sentences such as "I see a horse." The activities also give practice in reading comprehension, so the child is not just saying the words aloud but also demonstrates that he understands the meaning of the words. I can't tell you how many times I have had a joyful child say something like, "Listen to this! I can read!" It really helps kids think of themselves as successful readers, which is a big part of the process.

I would still encourage phonics-based activities, because a truly fluent reader needs to be able to sound words out. And you can do it in lots of fun ways; I have collected boxes of different items that begin with different letters/ sounds; for example, our B Box contains things like Batman, bicycle, bird, bandaid, basketball, Barney, backpack, Blue (from Blue's Clues), etc. Then we play games with them, such as "I'm thinking of a B word. This is something that people read. There are many of them in the library. It's a ...." and then the child supplies the word "book."

And of course keep reading to him for pleasure. Computer games are also great. But I highly recommend that you focus your reading instruction on a sight vocabulary approach. Edmark really works for kids with learning disabilities and language delays.

I never see black people just riding bikes for fun. Just to go for a stroll around the neighborhood, or ride around town with their kids, stuff like that. I only see black people riding bikes because they have no car. I was thinking about the Brady Bunch, where the entire family was riding their bikes around, and it seemed cool to me to do it, but when I asked my wife she said "you crazy, thats white people stuff".

Answer
Bax...about to give up on you, again...black people ride bikes for exercise all the time...get out your neighborhood which appears to be limited...go to a cycle race, state park or local trail..and do you remember the behind the scenes mess with the Brady Bunch...homo father, oldest teen son trying to bed his tv mom, Mrs. Brady having an affair where she admits she got crabs, and the girls having sex with the tv brothers, drugs, and one in a porno...now you sound like some of the whites who believe their own myths...It was a frigging tv show!! If your 'wife' won't go, then take your kids on your own..dayumm

best place to buy kids bikes in nyc image

502EGL

We will be a mid to late 20's family with one kid and one dog relocating from FT. Benning, Ga. to New York, NY area. Wife is an accountant, I will seek employment with NYPD. Looking for a place that is relatively safe, good schools, house prices that match our jobs, backyard would be nice. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Unless your wife, as an accountant, makes buckets of money -- you can forget about Manhattan. The average one-bedroom apartment in a decent neighborhood is $2,000/mo rent. If you're looking to buy -- it's about 1,100 per square feet -- about 1 million for less than 1,000 square feet of space, plus taxes, maintenance and utilities. Ridiculously expensive.

Great alternatives to rent or buy are:

In Queens: Forest Hills, Astoria, Long Island City and Flushing.

Forest Hills is beautiful, extremely safe, there's plenty to do, it's only a short 25 minute train ride to midtown Manhattan, and it's very affordable to buy and rent.

Astoria is just across the bridge from Manhattan (a 5 minute train ride to Manhattan). Esthetically it's not much and it is pricier than most places in Queens because it is so close to the city.

Flushing is an Asian neighborhood and is pretty up-and-coming in terms of development. New things are springing up there left and right, but I certainly would not want to raise a child there.

Long Island City is very nice and culturally diverse. It's relatively cheap and you're pretty close to the city (only one train stop away). The only problem is that you will have to rely on the 7 train to get there (which is not very reliable) and it's the only train. If service goes out, you're cabbing it.

If I were you, I would focus on Forest Hills. When NYC was being developed they chose Forest Hills to be like a park with lots of trees and grass (which is great for kids to go and play). It's very family-focused, and there's plenty to do for everyone. There's a huge park (Flushing Meadow Park) with a lake in the center of it where you can rent paddle boats). Flushing Meadow Park has a few tennis courts, a basketball court, a few playgrounds, a place to have a picnic and BBQ, and there's also a place to rent bikes to bike around. It's about a 10 minute walk from Forest Hills. In Forest Hills, they have playgrounds, lost of places to walk, a Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, lots of shopping, etc. It's pretty awesome.

Good luck!

Good places to buy Road Bikes?

I haven't rode a bike in quite some time and the last one I owned was from Toys R US when i was a kid. The bike was extremely heavy but still good with no problems for over two years. I am 19 now and want to buy a new Road Bike for the city and just casual riding. Any good places to buy a bike? Online or local(NYC). Are the toys r us or other major companies good for bikes or are they bad?

Answer
Real bicycle shops do not sell toys and Toys 'R Us does not sell real bicycles - period.

Where to buy a good road bike? Google two words..."bicycle shop" and your zip code. Or Bicycle Shop New York City. Toys 'R Us and other discount/big box stores sell "bicycle shaped objects" of very low quality.

There's plenty of R.E.I. stores around the New York area. Check with them from time to time for close-out sales or your LBS - local bike shop. See Google link below.

Plenty of good brands to choose from starting in the $650 - $700 range. Raleigh, Specialized, Cervelo, Masi, Trek, Giant, Diamondback, Cannondale, etc., etc.

Answer
This question has been asked so many times on Yahoo answers I've actually lost count.

For the billionth time, it's NOT a New Kids On The Block song!! Ok? Geez!! It only MENTIONS New Kids On The Block. I mean, think about it, why would New Kids On The Block sing a song that says "New Kids On The Block had a bunch of hits" in it anyway? It doesn't make much sense does it? I didn't think so!

Anyway, the song you're asking about is called "Summer Girls" and it's by the group LFO.

"Summer Girls"

Yeah...I like it when the girls stop by.. In the summer
Do you remember, Do you remember?
...when we met..That summer??

[Chorus:]
New Kids On The block, had a bunch of hits
Chinese food makes me sick.
And I think it's fly when girls stop by for the summer, for the summer
I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch,
I'd take her if I had one wish,
But she's been gone since that summer..
Since that summer

[Verse 1:]
Hip Hop Marmalade spic And span,
Met you one summer and it all began
You're the best girl that I ever did see,
The great Larry Bird Jersey 33
When you take a sip you buzz like a hornet
Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets
Call me Willy Whistle cause I can't speak baby
Something in your eyes went and drove me crazy
Now I can't forget you and it makes me mad,
Left one day and never came back
Stayed all summer then went back home,
Macauly Culkin wasn't Home Alone
Fell deep in love, but now we ain't speaking
Michael J Fox was Alex P Keaton
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch

[Verse 2:]
Cherry Pez,cold crush,rock star boogie
Used to hate school so I had to play hookie,
Always been hip to the B-boY Style
Known to act wild and make girls smile,
Love New Edition and the Candy Girl
Remind me of you because you rock my world
You come from Georgia where the peaches grow
They drink lemonade and speak real slow
You love hip hop and rock n roll
Dad took off when you were 4 years old
There was a good man named Paul Revere
I feel much better baby when you're near
You love fun dip and cherry Coke,
I like the way you laugh when I tell a joke
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch

[Repeat Chorus]

[Bridge:]
In the summertime girls got it going on,
Shake and wiggle to a hip hop song
Summertime girls are the kind I like,
I'll steal your honey like I stole your bike

[Verse 3]
Bugaloo shrimp and pogo sticks
My mind takes me back there oh so quick
Let you off the hook like my man Mr. Limpet
Think about that summer and I bug, cause I miss it
Like the color purple, macaroni and cheese,
Ruby red slippers and a bunch of trees
Call you up but whats the use
I like Kevin Bacon,but I hate Footloose
Came in the door I said it before,I think I'm over you
but I'm really not sure
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch

[Repeat Chorus]

[Bridge:]
In the summer girls come and summer girls go
Some are worth while and some are so so,
Summer girls come and summer girls go
Some are worth while and some are so so,
Summertime girls got it going on
Shake and wiggle to a hip hop song
Summertime girls are the kind I like
I'll steal your honey like I stole your bike

[Repeat Chorus]

Why do people enjoy criticizing our kids' development if it's not up to par w/ their standards?

njboricua7

My son recently turned 2 and is very advanced for his age. He knows ALL the primary colors, shapes, can count from 1 to 10 (in order), knows his ABC's (in order), can dress himself, talks in full sentences (his fave now, "what did you say"), he recognizes tv characters, knows many kid rhymes/songs, loves to "read", enjoys coloring (he knows how to draw a circle & a cloud), he eats on his own using fork and/or spoon, understands if he did something wrong or right. Can recognize & understand a plethora of other things (I'll be here all day if I were to share all that he knows, he even shocks me). HOWEVER, there's 1 thing he has yet to master, leaving his bottle (that's my fault). Despite all he has achieved in so little time, people look at me as if I'm such a bad mom. I've a Jersey attitude: don't look at me wrongly & don't say anything stupid! Trying hard to learn to be nice, how do I NICELY tell people to mind their BIZ & stop assuming my child isn't smart b/c he's on a bottle?

Answer
Every child is different. And I have had this theory on how kids are for years now. I am a mother of an 11yr old boy, 9 yr old boy, 4 1/2 yr old boy, and 9 month old girl. From watching the 2 oldest ones, as well as friends kids, I have a theory. There are the book smart kids, and the common sense kids. The book smart ones can absorb knowledge like theres no tomorrow, but when it comes to everyday things they dont give in.

For example my now 9 year old, when he was 3, he knew all that stuff you are saying above here about your son. But he wouldnt use the toilet, and when it came to trying to teach him how to ride a bike with training wheels he would run into objects, and just DIDNT get the whole brake thing. Took years to teach him that.

Then with my oldest who is now 11. He could do anything if it had to do with common sense, like giving him boundries and staying in the back yard to play at the age of 4. He didnt test them, because he was told DONT, so he didnt. Also, if you physically showed him how to do a certain type of project and did it with him, he got it the first time. His brain got it, if it was hands on.

Now, my 41/2 year old is the same as the 9 year old. He didnt give up his bottle till just a few months ago. Granted he only had one at night just before bed, but none the less he WOULNT give it up! Same as potty training, he was the toughest so far! He just was set in his ways and smart as a whip, but he knew how to outsmart me on that one for a while. lol (He knew how to spell his name, by age 20 months. He was quick in the learning things.) As well as a test he took for preschool, he outsmarted a puzzle. The puzzle had the primary shapes of circle, triangle, square, and a rectangle. Well, this test was done just before he turned 3, and seems that most 3 year olds will recognize the first 3 objects. But I guess they told me, rectangle is something they dont get till they are 4, cuz its so close to a square. Anyways, when it came time to put the rectangle piece in this puzzle, he attempted it with the puzzle positioning the rectangle lengthwise. But he picked up the piece so that it was up and down long...... he tried to fit it in maybe 3 times. Well, as you can imagine it didnt fit. So, instead of turning the piece to fit the puzzle, he amazed us all by fitting the puzzle so it fit his piece! And seems that takes more thinking processes then the other way around. lol Imagine that. And to this day he makes things fit around him! haha!

But as you can see from the 3 examples I have showed you. Every child has different though processes, and they are just themselves. There are the book smart kids that lack the desire to give up the common sense things. And then there are the common sense kids that just take a little longer to learn the book knowledge that they need later in life.

It will all work out, and if others dont like it... heck with them! You are doing a great job raising your son no matter what others think! Just smile in knowing he knows more then their kids do! lol

Have a great day, and keep your chin up!!! Kids are not a competition, they are the PRIZE all in its own, daily too!

My daughter is 5 and she has terrible balance. How can I help her develop better balance?

She has terrible balance. She always has. She is trying to learn to ride a bike - it is terrible. She experiences just as much difficulty on ice skates and roller skates. Is there anything I can do to help her develop this?

Answer
have her ears checked! If there is no problem there, then yes, we found something we were able to do with one of our adopted sons who also had a real problem there. We built a 'balance beam' a few inches off the floor and helped him learn to walk it. It was just a 4 x 4 beam, as I recall, nailed on to a couple of 2 x 4 cross beams at each end. I don't remember how long it was, but maybe six feet? All the kids enjoyed playing on it. If you are worried too much about her slipping and hurting herself, put a couple of old folded up blankets on each side.

Play hopscotch with her. Play jump rope with her. Simple, easy stuff for you and me but it will be hard for her, so just do little short games.

Check her diet. Make sure she is getting enough good food. If you can, eliminate anything artificial: flavorings, colorings, preservatives... this can sometimes contribute to physical problems.

And enough sleep.

but first, get her ears checked. Not her hearing, but her ears themselves. Our main sense of balance is located in the inner ear.

How to get kids in shape for x-country ski season?

Frankie

My kids are considering cross country ski races next year, but just getting into it this year. They are taking beginning lessons now at the course where the Junior Nationals will be held in spring, so they are excited about that. My daughter is almost 8 and son is 10. What sort of things should they do over summer? What sort of games and exercises would be helpful? How to make it more fun so they don't get burned out?

Answer
First, place restrictions on their use of phones, tv, computer and the like. This will direct their focus to more physical activities, and they will train themselves. I recently attended an athletic training seminar, and one of the topics was training pre-teen athletes. The general consensus seems to be- don't. These young athletes' bodies are still developing, and by directing them to a more active lifestyle, they will keep fit by simply doing what kids do best- running, jumping, skipping, climbing trees, riding their bikes, etc.

Diet and rest are also important. Make sure they have a healthy diet, and limit their intake of processed foods. Let their body clocks dictate sleep and rest periods, when a child is tired, let them rest.

What is the hotel policy of a 6 month old baby? Are children that age counted as 1 guest?

tiger

My family is travelling in Berlin, GE this summer. I can't find a nice hotel centrally located in the city. We have 3 kids(ages;6, 3 and <1 y old). Are we counted as 2 adults and 2 kids? What is the hotel policy of a 6 month old baby? Are children that age counted as 1 guest?

Answer
Jason first off most places in Europe do not charge for children under 12 as long as they stay in the parents room.

Secondly try this site for a hotel in Berlin:
http://www.accorhotels.com/accorhotels/index.html
They have hotels all over Europe and spreading out across the world now.

Accror hotels offer everything from super cheap F1 hotels with shared baths upto 5 star hotels. We normally stay in the IBIS catagory when as a couple and if I am on the road with my bike and friends week book a step below in the ETAP hotels.

In January we stayed at the IBIS Potsdamer Platz. It was inbetween an ETAP and a SUITEHOTEL which are both Accor hotels. They offer a parking garage much cheaper then parking on the street. It is 2 blocks from Check Point Charlie and buses stop right infront of the hotels.

I would also suggest for your visit that you all buy the A,B,C, tickets for public trans. It cost Euro 6 pp per day and you can ride all over Berlin and surrounding areas like Potsdam (Sansucci Gardens and palace a must see!!). THe tickets are good on all modes of public transportation.
Bus = Bus Small square sign with route number
U-Bahn -Subway (sometimes above ground) Circle with "U"
S-Bahn - Trolley (but sometimes more like trains) Circle with "S"
Bahn - Trains Pinkish sign with "DB"
Here is a site for the S-Bahn with maps. They are color coded and within a few minutes most people can navigate with them. http://www.s-bahn-berlin.de/englisch/

Have fun... lots and lots to see and do here are some of my recommendations http://www.berlin.de/english/
Sight seeing deck of the Telecommunications tower at Alexander Platz
Potsdam, Schloss Sansucci garden, baths and building
Brandenburg Gate and surrounding area
Boat ride along the Spree River through the city
Templehof Airport - one of the worlds larges buildings

How do you stop a bike chain from rusting?

Dyslexia o

All my kids have bikes. We have no room in the house for them and no garage or carport. THe chains have all gotten pretty rusty from the rain and stuff.
How can we get rid of the rust?
How can we prevent it from happening again?

Answer
First, if the bikes aren't covered or protected for example under a porch, or in your basement, or an unused room buy some heavy plastic sheets (8X8) at your local Ace Hardware and cover them. Second, buy some WD40 lubricant and spray this on the chain. Then while holding the rear wheel off the ground crank the pedals and wipe the oil and dirt off the chain using an old rag (repeat several times). Lastly lubricate the chain with a good light weight oil. Suggestions "3 & 1" oil, light machine oil, or SAE Grade 5W or 10W motor oil. You don't want a heavy coat. A good light coat should do it. Avoide lithium grease as it collects dirt.

What was the nick-name for bikes with 4 flat plastic spokes instead of metal spokes?

Answer
