What charities are there where I can donate an old bike?

Today, I felt a calling to donate one of my older mountain bikes. I was not sure of how to do this. I didnt want to give it to the Goodwill. I want to give it to a charity that will give the bike to extremely poor children who really could use a bike. Does anyone know of charities that takes bikes and gives them to under-privileged children?

Answer
give it to a local church that will find the best way to use it otherwise most charities will send it to a donation center and resell it and the money they make from that sale will likely help those underprivileged kids anyway.

How can I get over a feeling of unwarranted guilt after I make a sale?

Harry B.,

I think when it comes to financial matters, I lose confidence a bit when aiming for the best price.

For example, in stating my worth to a company I work for and negotiating pay.

Or if I am selling something and make a profit.

I don't feel the sense of guilt if it is an online sale, or if I am doing the buying, but if I am the one selling.

For example, I sell ads for my newsletter, The Psychic Times, and, while I believe in the product, I always second-guess whether the advertiser is getting a good value or not after they pay for their ad.

Or, a more mundane example. I bought a bike at a thrift store for $10 but when I got home, I realized it was worth a lot more. I sold it to some guy on Craigslist for $200. I felt guilty about that, almost undeserving. I mean, the guy inspected it and probably knew its true value, but I got lucky.

Why do I feel guilt after I make a profit? I think this is holding me back. I'm sure people like Bill Gates do not have this problem.

Answer
It's because you are a good person. You are empathetic about what other people's needs and struggles might be and you don't want to be heartless and greedy. I am the same way, but there is a balance where you can be a good, successful entrepreneur and still care about others. When you offer someone the opportunity to place an ad in your newsletter, you are simply offering them a choice of whether they want to pay that price for their business to get some extra exposure. If they don't think it's worth it, they don't have to try it or after trying it one time, they can quit. As for finding an item at a greatly reduced price and then turning a profit on it, I say good for you! To the person who bought it from you, it was worth the $200. and they didn't have to spend time and money to go hunt down a good deal. (Something tells me it was probably worth a little more than the price you sold it for.) = )
I can totally relate to you on this because I don't like to take advantage of others, especially someone who might be facing tough times. Even in this economy, there are still people who are doing well. I just figure the people who are buying your items or services are able to afford it. You come across as a fair person, not selfish or greedy (like a lot of politicians and corporations). I don't think taking advantage of the opportunity for a good deal on the bike, for instance, makes you an opportunistic person, but a smart one. You do deserve your success, remember that.
Another thought: You probably do a lot of good deeds already, but if you want to feel good, you could always buy a child's bike at a thrift store and donate it to a needy child sometime.

How much room can be maid in the back of a 90's Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee?

kids bike fit image

sy greenbl

Can the seats be easilly removed? Is there enough room for 2 or 3 bikes to fit in the back?

Answer
There's not enough height. I couldn't get my kid's 16" bike in straight up. No way would my mountain bike fit, even with the seat down.

It's why roof racks or bumper hitch mounts are sold. Think about it, it will take a full sized van to gain enough vertical height handle bars to tread to just walk one in.

How can I get the front brakes on my bike from rubbing against the tire?

Zook

A kid messed with my bike and now the front brakes on it slightly rub against the tire, causing it to slow down much faster. How can I adjust them to fix this problem? Also the tire itself seems a little loose.

Answer
It might not be the brakes. Check these 2 below before adjusting the brakes.
1. Check that the wheel is firmly attached and aligned properly. Place bike on the ground. If it has a quick release lever then release it, make sure the axle is firmly in the fork, and then close the lever making sure there is medium resistance. The medium resistance ensures that the lever won't simply vibrate open. If it has axle nuts get a properly fitting wrench, loosen both nuts first and then tighten down.
2. Check the straightness of the wheel. Do this by spinning the wheel and watching for a wobble side to side. If it wobbles a lot, that is from one brake pad to the other, go to your local bike shop and get you wheels trued.

If neither problem above exists, then adjust your brakes.
For V or long arm brakes, see the first link
For cantilevers, see second link
For race bike sidepull brakes (ones where the arms reach from the top and pinch the wheel like a hand and thumb), see 3rd link

If all this doesn't help or is the least bit confusing, go to your local bike shop. They should be able to help you easily and quickly if it is a single simple thing.

How can I turn a coaster brake hub into a fixed gear hub?

Reptar88

I have a 12" rear wheel from a kid's bike (coaster brake hub/wheel) but I want to make it a fixed gear for a chain driven unicycle I'm building. Any suggestions on how I might accomplish this?

Answer
You can actually do this internally depending on who made the hub, but the fastest, easiest way to accomplish it is to have a weld shop tack weld the cog to the hub shell. 4 tacks around the perimeter should do it and keep heat to a minimum.

It would be far better for your needs to get a freewheel hub, add a fixed gear, and build the wheel.

How can a 12 year old make easy money with out approaching a lawnmower?

Evan

I am 12 and I am saving up money for a ps3 how can I make easy money without having to touch a lawnmower and take out the trash?

Answer
1. Go to craigslist and make an account\

2. Post a add under community/childcare or pet care be sure to make it sound like you can babysit very well, I say i will take attentive care of your child while you are away. be sure to put your cell-phone number, not your home phone, but if you don't have a cell than home phone is fine

3. make lots and lots of posters about your babysitting and use all the tips i said in step 2. Put them around places not near a highway, place them on posts around neighborhoods where people like to walk.

4. Bike or walk around until you see a women/man who has children and give them a "flyer" and ask if they need a babysitter. ( I got 2 jobs this way)

5. BE SURE TO BE ASSERTIVE!! Ask for an amount of money and STICK TO IT! if they don't want to pay you that much then tell them by. You DO NOT want to look like a kid that people can take advantage of.

Thank you for reading, hope it helps dude.

How can you loose weight in the section under your belly?

yopude

Usually when you have kids, some women get fat just underneath the belly. What can you do to get rid of that other than surgery?

Answer
When we want to get rid of body fat, there is no way to specifically burn fat from one part of the body. Doing situps won't burn the fat that is covering your abs and doing tricep extensions won't get rid of the fat that is covering your triceps. The only thing you can do is lose weight all around and eventually the problem area will also improve. The way to burn fat is through a calorie restricted diet in conjunction with an exercise routine that will burn calories. Activities that burn calories include running, biking, swimming and other high intensity activities.

How to increase the power in a lawn mower engine?

Mako

Right now I have a craftsman flathead engine making 5.5 hp.

I'd like to put it in a go cart or mini bike sometime, so more power would be more fun.

Any tips?

Answer
Get rid of those crappy mufflers and get a tuned exhaust from a 4-cycle small motorcycle engine (125-175 cc).

Put an extension on the air cleaner and grab air from a place away from the engine.Use low restriction air cleaner. Engine vicinity air is to hot, and hot air doesn't have as much oxygen in it as colder air. Ideally you could run your air thru a box with ice cubes in it so the air enters your engine as cold and dense as possible.

If you have access to a welder and grinder and drill press you can make an induction manifold for your carburetor. The longer the tubes between your carb and your intake valve the more time the gas has to completely vaporize and burn stronger. In an engine you want top heat production to make more power.

Use synthetic 50W oil and wrap a little insulation around the cooling fins. Since the lawnmower engine is made to run at walking speeds it has excess cooling fins to handle the heat of burning gas. Since your go cart moves, it doesn't need as much cooling. This is a trade off though. You want to keep your engine as hot as possible but not so hot you melt the valves or cylinder dome. So you got to experiment. Put a little insulation on engine..if's its ok with that, keep adding more until it smokes to much or power goes down (from oil not staying on cylinder walls)

Get a spark plug with multiple electrodes on the tip.

And most importantly and this is not the engine.. get a variable speed transmission (torque converter) and not a friction clutch. This transmission will make sure your engine is getting the optimum torque output no matter your speed. It's like having a hundred gear transmission.

Try to copy the design of a 125 cc four cycle motorcycle engine. These engines are smaller in cc's than a lawnmower engine but get about 15 hp out of them. Lawnmower engines are built for longevity and dirt and cheapness and heat. So they limit the horsepower on purpose so the engine lasts longer.

In all honesty you would be a lightyear ahead by just grabbing a used motorcycle engine and transmission and sprockets, chains and controls out of a wrecked bike rather than trying to use a lawnmower engine.

You could spend a 100 hr of labor and several hundred dollars trying to make your 5.5 hp engine put out 15 hp and Yamaha and Honda do this all day long. Don't reinvent the wheel and start with a proven engine and transmission. When I was a kid I tried those lawnmower engined mini-bikes and go-karts...they always disappoint. The clutches wear out quick and the motors arent designed for the high loads you put on them, so they break quick

We go biking one day, running the next, and swimming the third (ages 7 - 11). Any good routines for the swimming portion. We do "workouts" (no extreme) in the water for halt an hour then play games in the water or on the field.

Answer
Light gymnastics by the pool side before going in (stretching exercises and such). Then lengths in the pool from a few per day, to more, progressively.

Has anyone yet designed an infant seat for bike trailers?

Arwen

Years ago we sold our car to get a slower lifestyle in our suburban town, and for 10 years we lived by bike and bus. We used the bike for short trips and for going places the bus didn't go. At the time the bus service didn't run on Sundays or holidays, so if we wanted to go anywhere, we had to take the bikes.

At the time we had three children - age 7, 4.5 and a newborn. The 7 year old rode his own bike, the 4.5 year old rode behind his dad on a trail-a-bike, and we jury-rigged an old infant seat into a bike trailer for the infant. I also carried all our groceries in that trailer, and once, a door (without the baby!). Eventually they all rode their own bikes, but it started this way.

My brother's wife is about to have a kid, and I want to give them a bike trailer to go riding with their new baby.

Has anyone invented/marketed a better system for infants in bike trailers? If so, what bike trailer does it work with, and where can I get it?

Answer
@Old hippie, the infant car seat could be secured to the bike trailer and have it rear facing. In the car, it needs to be reclined no more than 45 degrees, but a parent could recline it more than this on a bike trailer to keep their newborns airway open and to prevent their child's head to their chest (especially going uphill)- more at 60 and 80 degrees from vertical on a bike. Remember that if the seat is installed in the car, it needs to be no more than 45 degrees.

This is because they aren't going to use the seat to withstand crash forces- just to secure the child for the ride.

Here is an article about the American Academy of Pediatric policy regarding bike trailers. They recommend that, "...adults should carry only children 12 months or older and weighing less than 40 pounds."

These are just recommendations and a parent can take what they want from what the AAP says. Because I don't agree with all policy decisions by the AAP.

Instead of having the child ride in the back with a jury-rigged infant car seat why not wear the baby with a wrap? There is the Moby Wrap or the Ergo carrier.

*Sigh* Many people haven't lived or visited Cambodia. You would never know how people ride on motorcyles and their bikes with their infants. That being said, I'm not sure if it is safe though. I just haven't heard about children dying in bike trailers.

Here is an article about why bike trailers may not be as dangerous as people think: http://www.mnn.com/family/protection-safety/blogs/bike-trailers-child-safety-and-the-medias-fear-
agenda

Whoops! Forgot to put the AAP article in: http://aapnews.aappublications.org/content/30/7/18.6.full

Why all the thumbs down? I haven't ever heard of many children getting killed being hit by a vehicle in a bike trailer. In contrast, I have heard plenty of children getting killed while in a crash being *in* the vehicle. Statistics just don't lie.

I'm all for safety, but I just don't understand by these trailers are just deemed as so dangerous. What magically happens when a child is 12 months old? If the car seat can be tightly tied down in the trailer, I just don't see how that would be any different.

How do I install training wheels around a rear derailleur on a 20" bike?

Just purchased Wald training wheels for kids bike (16" to 26"). The right side has a gear derailleur on it, which extends further than the axle. I can't put the training wheel bar on the axle since I don't have clearance.

Can this axle be extended out farther somehow?

Answer
There are better ways to learn how to ride a bike. Remove the pedals and lower the saddle so they can flat foot on the ground and push them self around and learn to steer. Then try coasting down a small slop with the feet down and then lifting the feet. Next replace the pedals and gradually raise the saddle.

What is the name of the bike accessory where there is a basket for kid and shopping on the front?

qbyrnes

I was in Amsterdam and saw a bike with a wagon like attachement. It was wooden and had a little bench where kids could sit. I did not get the name of it and have been looking online for it but can't locate anything like it.

Answer
If the thing you saw was wooden, my guess is it was homemade.

However, if by "wagon like" you mean it was something towed behind the bike, then there are lots of those available, and I guarantee they're safer and more comfortable than anything made out of wood. They generally are light weight, have a full frame around them and five point harness to protect kids in a crash, have rain/wind covers, have room for one or two children plus some cargo room, and are designed for "normal riding" meaning they can go 20+mph, and don't have much of an effect on the towing bicycle. They attach to almost any bike. For examples see http://www.burley.com/ although there are other manufacturers too. While the wooden one you saw may have been cute, I'm guessing it would be heavy, uncomfortable for the kids, and completely unsafe for anything but walking speed in an area with few or no cars (especially in the US where cars aren't generally looking for bikes).

If by "shopping on the front" you mean the thing was on the front of the bike (above the front wheel), then I would say its a bad idea. Unless the bike was specifically designed to have cargo in front (very rare in the US, but more common overseas), adding that kind of weight to the front will cause the bike to steer very unpredictably. It will also expose the child to full impact with any type of crash. Even hitting a dog or curb at low speed would be a problem, since the extra weight in front would tend to pitch the whole bike forward over the bars.

I want to know all the members personalities and your biases in each group and the reason? Mine are:
Girls generation:jessica
Shinee:key
Mblaq:joon

Answer
I don't know much about SNSD, but with SHINee and MBLAQ, I'd be glad to help. c:

I'm an A+ btw. c:

⢠Yang Leader [Seungho], the leader, and eldest, who is capable of anything (including fixing a bike, beat boxing, and taking care of children.) He's the perfect man. Don't get into a fight with Seungho, you'll lose; he's strong. He also has a natural aegyo, which comes out through blushes and silly mistakes. c: He was voted best dad on MBLAQ's Hello Baby. He's known for his dark circles and plump lips. :3 Also can somewhat speak English. Licks his lips a lot. ^-^

⢠Fur G.O, he-who-has-a-hairy-chest. G.O is the main vocal, but wow, his voice is so soft and makes hearts flutter! ^-^ G.O also is a perv. *sigh* G.O is sexy, and he knows it. He dropped out of school to become a singer. He used to have a mustache. He's had around 20 relationships. Pfft. Play boy. xD He also is a very good cook.

⢠Muscle Babo [Joon], he is pretty much a good-looking babo. His abs are... *~* But his brains are... o_o He sucks at math. Joon is sensitive and cries easily, like once he was pranked and he cried. :c Joon has a lot to say, and he says too much sometimes. He speaks honesty, and this is quite a bad thing because he usually tends to make fun of himself. He's really flexable and used to do ballet. [: He likes to act, and played a role in Ninja Assassin. Finally, Joon has this constant aegyo that doesn't seem to switch off. xD

⢠Aegyo Cheondoong [Thunder], he has a big aegyo. He is brother of Dara [2ne1], and his noona and him have a cat well-known named Dadoong. Cheondoong is quiet usually, but I think he's just a little shy. When Mir isn't around, Cheondoong plays as maknae. In general, he's a fake maknae. ;D But don't let Cheondoong's innocence fool you, HE IS EVIL. xD He's really good at dancing. Speaks an okay-ish English. Has a baby face, and lived in the Philippines.

⢠The Silly Maknae [Mirâ¥], ah how do I even begin to explain him? Mir is a derp. He is hilarious, and loves to do jokes. He raps, and because he is a rapper, he refuses to sing. Though, he sang trot...yeah. xD Mir is a parachute, he got into MBLAQ because his brother-in-law is CEO at J.Tune Camp. Mir is like a adorkable child but at the same time he is a sexy beast. One of his older sister's is actress, Go Eun Ah. Mir grew up on a farm; known as Farming Idol. OKAY, YOU SHOULD KNOW OF MIR'S ENGRISH. He specializes in Engrish. He's hyper, has a husky voice, and is an amazing rapper. His rapping is really unique. He looks like FT Island's Hongki. Mir has a HUGE manga collection. He shouts and screams when he's excited. He has sexy, honey thighs. *~* Mir is a fan of taking selcas. He hates needles. Mir likes to sleep, and it's impossible to wake him up. c:

You can tell Mir is my bias, right? ;D

As for SHINee and SNSD.
Minho and Sunny are my favourites. c:

This is what I know from SHINee...

⢠Dino Jonghyun, the cocky one. Lmfao, he knows he's so hot and he likes to flaunt it off! He's known for looking like a dinosaur. xD He's the main vocal of the group and his composing and singing skills are great! His laugh is.. well interesting LOL. It kind of sounds like a cute pig. Jonghyun is also muscular. JONGHYUN IS THE SHORTEST~ SHORTER THAN TAEMIN. had to be said. xD

⢠Flaming Charisma, Minho, who's the expert at sports. He's kind of quiet, but when it comes to sports he's super competitive! He's known for his 'flaming charisma' onstage. He's the rapper of and he's so muscular! His abs probably hurt many fans eyes; too sexy. *~* On SHINee's Hello Baby, you see this really kind and sweet side of Minho; it's adorable. ⥠Minho has a very original aegyo. He doesn't show it often, but in my opinion, it's cuter than Taemin's. *gets killed* Minho is both cute and hot. And on stage, there might as well just be a spotlight on him. *~* Although he is the second youngest, he is surely the tallest. ^-^

⢠Maknae Taemin, the aegyo prince! He's adorable and makes the noona fans' hearts explode. c: He's known as the dancing machine. He's the youngest in the group, and surely acts like it. Although he wants to be known as "manly", most of the fans still think of him as a very pretty person. TAEMIN IS PRETTY. VERY PRETTY. He's prettier than most girls, especially with hair-extensions. *~*

For Onew: He is clumsy, and whenever he does something clumsy, it's called the "Onew Condition",and he LOVES chicken.
For Key: He's a diva and the "umma" of the group.

~Don't know much about SHINee~

Mihihi, hope this helped. c:

i need to know what a day is like of a filipino child. where can i find info for my project?

abegail_ga

i have to compare a life of an 11 year old with another one in a different country and i chose philippines but i can't fine info and also no about their family.

Answer
FUN, and lot's of it. It depends on what area of the Philippines. An 11-year old rural child is basically a "nature kid." Activities range from catching shrimp, swimming, running, climbing trees, exploring, spelunking to cathing insects. A typical urban child spends time watching tv, biking, playing video games, socializing with neighbor kids. The weather is conducive to outdoor activities and games. Also when it rains, Filipino kids like to bath in the rain because its not too cold.

i just think that he'll enjoy the ride better in a carrier seat than in a trailer, he's 15 mo. by the way...

Answer
Back in the dear, dead, days of my youth, I carried my daughter around in a carrier seat.

As others have mentioned, a carrier puts your childs weight up high and has a tendancy to overbalance the bicycle. I never really noticed this as an issue once I was mounted and moving, but it was a problem trying to get her into the seat and settled. Generally, my wife and I found it a two person job. One person held the bike and the other got my daughter strapped in.

If you have ever ridder on the back seat of a tandem, you also know the frontal view is pretty limited. About all your baby will see is your back.

My little sister has a bike trailer. Her two kids seem to really enjoy riding in it.

Unlike a carrier, the kids have a great view forward and to the sides.

Being low down and having a low center of gravity, trailers are very stable.

While a trailer is somewhat heavier to pull about and bulky to store, it is a one person operation getting your kid comfortably situated.

Most trailers can be completely closed up to keep your child more comfortable.

Carriers, at least the one we had, are a real chore to put on and take off. For the most part, you install it and leave it there until the kid is too large. On the other hand, a trailer just clamps to the bike and is really simple to attach and detach. This also makes it easy to let someone else pull the trailer when you get tired.

Finally, at least for the carrier we had, there is a pretty definite size limit. After that, if you want to keep riding with your kid, you are likely to need a trailer until the kid is big enough for a tag-along.

Beleive it not, I am not really opposed to a carrier, but I really think trailers are better in most aspects.

Hope this helps.

which is better and safer for my 1 1/2 year old to ride with me?

Answer
I too have a Honda Civic and the Schwinn brand trailer folds to 3" flat on the floor of the trunk.

I carry a 4 yr old and 2 yr old grandsons in the trailer. The kids love it. They don't have to be enclosed in warm weather as the top acts as a convertible.

On cinder bike paths you will want a rear fender on the bike to keep the dirt from flinging up on your child.

As to what BobA said about the stability... I did drop my bike with the trailer attached. I got stitches in my leg. The kids sat there worried about me. They were fine, the trailer never lifted a tire. Can't say that about rear rack mounted seats.

Look around you can even find a fantastic deal on used trailers that are like new. Kids simply out grow them.

he isn't really fat right now,but all of his close cousins are. he just started playing football and he loves it. would like to see him gain muscle mass instead of fat. he is a bit taller and bigger than most 7 year olds and much stronger. just want to use this oppertunity to motivate him to get healthier. thank you.

Answer
You can't speed up his metabolism. You can teach him a healthy life style. Eating a healthy diet, limit snacks, no soda, exercising on a regular basis, etc. At his age, all you really need to do as for as exercising is limit indoor time. Have the kid outside playing. Riding a bike, swimming, or even just playing with other kids can keep a kid in good shape.

How do I deal with obnoxious, badly behaved neighborhood kids?

Jehn

My family recently relocated to a new area. We chose a house we loved and everything was great until a couple of months ago. I have one 7 year old son who I love dearly but I really don't like children at all. I don't mind children as much when they have good manners and you can tell that their parents took the time to be good parents.
I have a couple neighbors with really bratty, rude kids. They are always messing with stuff on my property, touching our cars, and trying to take stuff that's outside that doesn't belong to them. There are absolutely no boundaries. I've given them the rules of our house and when they are on our property but it's completely disregarded. Recently they just started trying to come into my house whenever. I try to make sure the doors are always locked but sometimes it's necessary to leave one unlocked if someone is outside doing something. They do still try and get in when the doors are locked though. I walked into my living room the other day and found two kids jumping on my couch trying to figure out how to get my TV to turn on. I just about flipped out and wanted to scream at them. These kids completely ruin my son's time when he goes out to play with other friends. I want him to be able to play outside but I don't need a kid ringing my doorbell (20 times in a row) and "telling" because my son won't let them ride his bike or play with his toys, etc. If I wanted to listen to kids tattle on one another for no reason I would have had more than one. I don't want to be the bitchy mean lady in the neighborhood but my patience is completely gone. I find myself hardly able to address them without sounding really mean anymore. I have tired to talk to the other parents about how it's not okay for them to just come in our house or mess with our stuff, but the only thing that changed is that they aren't as nice when they see us. It's obvious to me that they consistently send they're kids out every day to roam the neighborhood because they don't want to deal with them at home. Who let's 6 and 7 year old kids play completely unsupervised (you can't see my house from their house so I know the parents aren't watching them)?
Any ideas on how I can deal with this before I go insane? I don't feel it's okay to discipline other people's children. It's not like they would listen anyway.
HELP!!

I've spoken to the parents three times. I've very firm. The more I speak to them the more defensive they get and the less they take action. I'm not the only one in the neighborhood having these problems. The kids aren't EVER supervised so they just run around and do whatever they want.

Answer
if the kids arent being supervised call cps, they might move them elsewhere, also thats tresspassing and the parents could get in trouble for that,

Can I use a rear mounted bike seat (for baby) with a 3 wheel bike?

girlsun69

I want to use a 3 wheel bike when riding with my baby, but I can't find any info on using an adult trike with either a baby trailer or a rear mounted seat. Having the third wheel seems like it would provide the extra stability to make a bike mounted seat safer, but I'm not sure if it's possible to properly and safely attach one to the frame of a three wheel bike? Or if I decide to use a trailer, would that attach to the frame of my bike successfully? Any info or experiences with this are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
There are a range of different bike mounted kids seats. There are also a heap of different styles of trailers. There will be some that will fit easy and ones that will need to be modified. The style of trike will determine which will fit best.

Most upright adult trikes have a large wire basket mounted between the back wheels. If this is removed it leaves plenty of potential mounting points. to securely mount one or more child seats. Of course caution needs to be observed to make sure that all moving parts are well shielded from little fingers and feet. I've seen three mounted across the back of a trike. (fitted with a custom made frame). I've also seen infant car seats mounted.

The best trailer option I can think of of the top of my head would be this style. They usually mount on a bike's rear axle, but there will be plenty of options at the back of a trike to securely mount these.
http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDetails.asp?productID=7572
http://www.actionbent.com/twtrailer.html

There are others that mount off the seat post that should work also. The most common trailers clamp onto the left chain stay, they won't be any good on a trike.(with out major rework)

Yeah; there are plenty of options. You should be able to get something pretty much "off the shelf". An extra dollar or two on different mounting clamps might be necessary. Or you could go to town and do something totally original.

Is there an infant seat system for bike trailers?

Answer
Most bike systems are designed for babies 9 months and over. It's an issue of being able to hold their heads up enough to prevent the sort of jostling that biking creates. Even a carseat in a bike trailer, isn't secure enough to hold them steady, especially not in the case of a spill or accident. I also wanted something for our five month old to use with our bikes in the spring, but no such luck. Now she's 16 months, and we've gotten her a bike seat.

I think maybe just buy them a bike trailer and let them decide what they are going to do to. It might've been a risk you and your husband were willing to take, but each parent should decide for themselves.

Good luck!

What is the best type of bike to put a baby seat on?

I am not comfortable putting the baby seat on the back but since they have the ones where my son can be in front of me, I was just wondering which type of bike works best. Thanks!

Answer
Not sure that I would use any seat where the child would be sitting on the bike itself. There are several good trailers that are on the market that I would feel much better about my kids in. I purchased a Burley brand trailer with no regrets. It is very stable and if I wreck my bike the trailer arm compensates so that the kids don't flip also. Not sure how old your son is but that would play a big part in what you buy also. Shop around and check the local bike shop too. They can be very helpful.

What Do You Think of Mandatory Curfews for Minors?

Jim

Recently, an 11 year old girl from New Jersey was bike riding to her friends' house around early evening for a sleepover. She never made it and her body was found a few days later in a recycling bin.

Now many towns are considering setting up mandatory curfews for minors. Like if they see anyone under 14 alone walking the streets in the evening through the early morning they will be detained until picked up by someone over 21.

Is this necessary or are we (society) going overboard?

Answer
Society is overboard.

Society has risks. Life has risks. We just have to accept it.

If you cross the road, you have a chance of being run over by a drunk idiot with a 40,000 pound truck.

Then why don't we ban people from the crossing the road?

It's completely hypocritical.

And when serial killers are out there, spending resources to keep an innocent kid at home is a waste of time.

The US is a democracy, not a nanny state.

The curfews are also against the 1st Amendment of free speech. I recently camped outside government offices when I was 12. Overnight, without parents. If curfews were implemented, my free speech right would be gone. It also violates Article 19 and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 13 of the United Nations Conventions of the Rights of the Child, both regarding free speech.

****

UDHR

Article 19.

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

Article 20.

(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.
(2) No one may be compelled to belong to an association.

UNCRC

1. The child shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of the child's choice.

2. The exercise of this right may be subject to certain restrictions, but these shall only be such as are provided by law and are necessary:

(a) For respect of the rights or reputations of others; or

(b) For the protection of national security or of public order (ordre public), or of public health or morals.

Article 15

1. States Parties recognize the rights of the child to freedom of association and to freedom of peaceful assembly.

2. No restrictions may be placed on the exercise of these rights other than those imposed in conformity with the law and which are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security or public safety, public order (ordre public), the protection of public health or morals or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.

****

If a child wants to take part in a reasonable protest at nighttime, they have a right to do so. They have a right to peaceful assembly. If a curfew is implemented, they won't have to right to do so. That infringes their right.

Yes, Article 15, Section 2 of the UNCRC might state it is for ordre public. But under-14s protesting does not constitute that it will turn violent, and free speech does not constitute a loss of public health or morals.

I have even heard of people saying that kids don't care about their free speech rights anyway, and that only a small percentage of kids care. It's a false assumption. Even if that's the case, does letting citizens the right to run for Congress important just because a small amount of citizens want to have a seat? Is the right to file a Freedom of Information Request unimportant just because a small number of people want to do so?

The US is not a tyranny by majority.

I'm actually devastated that someone could think up such a law. It seems like we're not even humans! Are we that genetically inferior? No. I'm not 14 yet, so I'm abhorred.

Curfews should be implemented by parents, not the government.

I have a 3 month old daughter who has just started rolling over. She used to love her activity mat where she could bat at the toys hanging down and now it's of no use to her at all. When I lay her down she immediately rolls over and the grunts and almost cries because she can't really do anything else. I would love some suggestions on something I can do with her and she can do alone in this time before she can crawl.

Answer
Have you ever tried getting one of those bike thing you hook on the back and your baby rides it that as you pedal your bike? It is a very good thing because she will be able to see you having fun and also have fun. Also maybe try one of those bouncing things like this: http://about.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=30468764/search=fisher%20price%20rainforest%20jumperoo/mode=about_babyproducts/st=query
I used to have one like that when I was a little kid and my parents would put me in it and I would bounce all around and as I got older and could touch the ground it helped my balance and help me learn to walk faster.(not like speed time to learn)
Not sure what else,
But when she is like 6 month-1year to try get her to walk and talk. Once she can talk try to show her learning is fun and maybe learn a new language, my neighbor babysits a like 2 year old and is teaching her how to do sign language because she did that in high school and the baby as learned like half the ABC's in about 6 months.

What route should I take to drive through all 48 states without using the interstate system?

Trey C

Me and a friend are planning on motor-biking across the country with the goal of at least entering all 48 contiguous states. We will be riding motor-bikes that will only be able to achieve about 30-40 miles per hour, so we will need to avoid the interstate system. We will have plenty of time to complete the trip, so no worries about time constraints. Anyone that could suggest a possible route would be a great help. Thanks and have a great day.

Answer
You've really put a lot of thought into this, haven't you?

Okay, sorry, look, you're talking about a landmass that is 3,000 miles by 1,000 miles (4800km x 1600km). The interstates were built because it was so difficult to construct a route across the nation.

No joke, in 1919, Lt. Dwight D. Eisenhower was part of a military experiment to see how hard it was to drive from Washington, D.C to San Francisco. It took him more than two months. When he took-over Germany 25 years later and saw the Autobahn, it was, literally, a revelation. When he became president, he built the interstates.

It is extremely difficut to hit all of the lower 48. I've moved cross-country about six times and driven cross-country more than a dozen times, and there are states I've never entered. In my entire life, I've known about a half-dozen people who have even claimed to have been in all 48, and I don't know that I really believed all of them. (Odd point, the three who basically proved it to me by showing me their travel logs were all Canadians).

Also, if you're doing this on scooters/mopeds or something similar, realize that, in a lot of the western U.S., the next gas station is 60+ miles away. My cycle has a six-gallon gas tank and I've been on reserve more than once. I knew a guy in Utah who tried to ride a scooter to Mardi Gras. He killed the scooter (literally, last day was done in the back of a friendly person's pickup) to make it across the Texas border so that he could at least say he'd gotten an entire state away from Utah.

Some suggestions:
. Buy a Rand-McNally type road atlas and study it, in depth, before you do any other planning
. Look for the scenic routes
. Realize that different states have different helmet laws
. Realize that you may not be able to get scooters repaired in a lot of places. Travel with a support truck or use some brand with a broad suport base in the U.S., such as Honda. Honestly, it would probably be less headache to do this on bicycles than on Vespas. Why not get real motorcycles and do the interstates at least part of the trip?
. Don't get hung-up on hitting all 48, or you will probably miss some really oustanding sights. F'rinstance, you'll want to see south Florida, but that will add 1,000 miles to your trip. California Highway One will take a day or three on scooters, and you will only transit about a quarter of the length of the state.
. Weather. March in Texas is pleasant. Other parts of the states are receiving six inches of snow. North Texas may be receiving six inches of snow.

Here are some roads that may be useful:
. 93/91/89 through Montano, Idaho, Utah, Arizona goes through a lot of scenic places
. Forget Route 66. Much of what exists is under interstates. Most of it goes (actually, "went")through very boring places.
Oh man, I'm having a hard time finding non-interstate routes that traverse more than one or two states. Seriously, talk to people and put some thought into this. I think you'll want something that can do more than 40 miles per day for any real travel in the U.S.

@MrDanger -- If you'd read what I wrote, you'd realize I'm trying to tell the Asker to use some other form of transportation. But anyway, I know people who have bicycled 89/85 from Canada to Mexico. I've ridden and driven most of it, and for most of it, it's a slow, pleasant drive. Just 'cause you drive like a jomoke doesn't mean everyone is a discourteous law-breaker. Speeding fools kill kids in schoolzones all the time, where the speedlimit is only 15MPH.

In the State of Colorado can I file for bankrupcty alone or does my ex wife need to also?

Jaco

We just got a legal divorce last year. We have $20k in debt and Colorado is a 50/50 state. So we've split them up.
Because of losing jobs and recession, we fell behind on our home's mortgage. Hired a broker to do a short sale. Both of our names are on that loan.

She owns a small condo of her own and a car. The house is already in foreclosure so the courts could use that to cover the debts. But, would she have to file too? And if so, would she lose her condo and car?

Thank you.

Answer
Such a question should be naswered only by a reputable attorney specializing in bankruptcy in Colorado.

that said, here is some general information:

If you are already divorced, you are seperate legal entities.

In Colorado, there are exemptions that include (Quoted from source 1):

38-41-204 - Spouse or child of deceased owner can also qualify for homestead exemption.

Personal Property

Will I need a double stroller for a 4year old and newborn?

kids push bike seat image

Mommy

We are planning on walking (45 min) to and from preschool and walking/jogging a lot on the beach, so it would be nice to have a seat in case his legs get tired. He will be 4 when the new baby is born. I do like the phil and teds, but I'm thinking that 4 is too old? What would you suggest?

Thank you!

Answer
I had a phil and teds and loved it, but my kids were closer together. If your son is small for his age, then it could be fine, but I find the legroom on it wasn't great for the older child. It's also great for manuvering through malls and urban areas, but not so much for off-trail (wheels are too small/no suspension) or running (the lower seat interferes with your stride).

For the walks to and from preschool, a sit-and-stand one is great. It really depends on how much your little guy is used to walking. When my son was three, he hiked Sentinal Dome in Yosemite with us and had no problem. At 4, he wouldn't have wanted a stroller to go to preschool. Is there a place he could chain a little bike at the preschool or does he like riding a scooter? At three, my daughter whines to be carried from the car to the mall door. If I were to have another child I can guarentee that she would want to ride in a stroller. So, part of it is just knowing your son and how much help he's going to need.

I have a double schwinn running stroller that I love and still use for my 3 and 5 year old when I'm out for a 4 mile run (any more than that and it's too much to push and any less and I usually have them ride their bike/trike along with me). If you can find a Bob on craigslist, then I'd recommend it, but I couldn't afford it personally. For whether you really need the huge double jogger, it depends on how much you really want to run on the beach for your own exercise and how much of it is that you plan to take your son for walks on the beach and don't mind stopping to look at shells, throw sticks, and build sandcastles. ;-)

I'm going to help with an organization that helps kids w/down syndrome learn how to ride bikes what to expec?

And Then S

tomorrow we're all gonna be going out and helping them learn how to ride bikes--not exactly teaching them but encouraging them etc. I haven't spent much time around kids with disabilities that much and don't know how to act, what to expect from them/their behavior, suggestions/tips? Thanks.

Answer
That is terrific! My younger sister Katie is 8 and has down syndrome.
It depends, tricycles or bicycles. For tricycles, the best thing to do is just help them sit on it, and place their feet on the pedals, then tie their feet to them w/ a cord or something, then push their feet so they know what to do.
For a bike, help them on. One big thing. DONT tie their feet to the pedals, because when they fall, the bike will fall on top of them cuz they cant move their legs away. Show them where to put their hands and feet, then show them that they need to push w/ their feet. Keep one hand on the front, one on the back of the seat, and go.

They will probably cry or talk alot. When i taught my sis how to ride a trike, she kept saying "Eminee! (thats how she says Emily) Katie ride big bike!" and stuff like that. They will be verrryyyy happy.

Whatever you do, dont yell at them. Remember that they have a mental disability and if they do something wrong, you cant always blame them.
Encourage them and tell them "Come on! you can do it!"
and smile alot :)
and act friendly.

:) good luck. lemme know how it goes.

I am a 17 year old girl who is 5'2 and weighs 115. what size? and what kind of dirtbike is better, perferably a 2 stroke.

Also what age is a good age to start off a kid on a dirtbike?

Answer
I would recommend going to the local motorcycle shop and sitting on a bunch of different bikes to see what you fit best on, then go out and look for a used one. You can save thousands of dollars purchasing used. The money you save can go to riding gear, gas, oil and tools.

You are the same height as my wife. She rides a Yamaha TTR 125 and fits on it perfectly. You can also look into a Honda CRF 150.

If you want a 2-stroke, you are going to either have to go with a 85cc 2-stroke big wheel or an older 100cc 2-stroke.
http://www.mcnews.com.au/NewBikeCatalogue/2003/Suzuki/RM100/Default.htm

Modern motocross bikes (1990's to present) have a seat height of around 37", even the 125cc 2-strokes. You would have to go pre 1980 to find a seat height lower than 37" on a full size dirt bike.

2-stroke or 4-stroke. Single cylinder 2-stroke produce more power and torque and a single cylinder 4-stroke of the same engine size. 2-strokes are lighter, have less moving parts, are easier to work on, have harder hitting power bands and cheaper to maintain. 4-strokes are heavier, have many more moving parts, are harder to work on, give smoother power delivery and are more expensive to rebuild. A 4-stroke can go much longer in between engine rebuilds compared to a 2-stroke, but when a 4-stroke needs an engine rebuild it will cost 5 times the cost.

4-strokes are easier to learn to ride on than 2-strokes because you can go slow, make mistakes and the engine will just keep on thumping along. In the same circumstance a 2-stroke will stall.

You can find used bikes on Ebay, Craigslist, BikeFinds and CycleTrader. You can also locate used riding gear on Ebay, Craigslist, flea markets and garage sales.

What age is a good age to start a child on a dirt bike? 3-5. There is a child out there right now that is 23 months old. You go JASON...lol! Can you imagine the skill that kid is going to build up by the time he is 10?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XVd2kgSnCE

Last thing. Stay away from the Chinese pit bikes. They are clones of Japanese or European bikes. They do not have the craftsmanship, quality or reliability of their Japanese or European counterparts. I own both Japanese and European motocross bikes. I also own 2 pit bikes. We use them for basic transportation around our property. For that, they are fine, but I wouldn't trust them on a long trail ride or on a motocross track.

what is a good size dirt bike for a 12 year old kid who loves to ride and do you suggest its ok to buy a used one

Answer
the perfect bike would be the crf150, its not to fast because its a 4 stroke but its a 150 so its got the power, i dont know he tall he is but the seat height is right around the cr80 height. or you could get him a cr80 but those things are fast. the 150 you could get a used one because it is newer and the 80 i wouldnt because alot of people race them and thats not too good on the bike

How do I accept my husband buying a bullet bike?

kids bike 16
on Kids' Bicycles, Boys Bicycle, Girls Bicycle Review
kids bike 16 image

JadaKiss

My husband is wanting to buy a bullet bike and I am totally against it.
I just feel it is super dangerous.
He is going to buy one whether I like it or not. So how do I accept the situation?
Its not about the money so much! I am just worried about his safety!

Answer
He's a big boy and you playing mommy and preventing him from buying a bike is going to do nothing but cause a lot or resentment on his part. But then again, if he's an idiot 16 year old kid in a 30 year old body, you don't want to stand by and do nothing. Do this instead, be a good wife and support him by telling him you will buy him a good full face helmet, leather riding gear that's meant for safety rather than styling, boots and gloves. Tell him that as long as he rides responsibly and wears the gear any time he rides, you won't say a bad word about the bike or him riding. And be true to your word. Every one needs a way to relax after a hard day and if he does that by riding, so be it. And you never know, when you find out that he is a responsible and safe rider, you might even want to go for a ride with him. Never can tell, he might really enjoy having you along. I know I enjoyed taking my wife for leisurely, relaxing rides.

However, if he wants to be a smarta$$ and says that he'll wear whatever he wants to or that he'll decide what he does or doesn't wear, tell him to get ready for a divorce. If he has that little respect for you and your concerns, then he doesn't deserve you. And be true to your word on that one too.

I have 16 nieces and nephews. Any ideas on a general christmas gift for them all?
