What would be a good bicycle for a 22 year old female?

Danielle N

I am short, like 5 foot. I want to use it for low to moderate exercise. Something Comfortable and durable. Maybe dark gray or dark blue. I live in St. Louis, so maybe from Dicks Sporting Goods or Walmart? I have not had a bicycle since I was a kid and am excited to own one again! Any suggestions are appreciated!

Answer
Dick's Sporting Goods? NO! K-Mart? NO! Target? NO! Sports Authority? NO! REAL bicycle shop? Hell YES!!! See links. Why? Because I live in St. Louis too. I know ALL the best shops in St. Louis.

1) Big Shark - whichever location is closest to you - http://bigshark.com/about/store-locations-map-pg825.htm Why Big Shark at the top of the list? LIFETIME Service Warranty - FREE tune-ups for the LIFE of the bike. http://bigshark.com/about/policies-and-shipping-pg11.htm

2) Tower Grove area? A & M Bicycle - http://goo.gl/maps/AZSTS Karl runs a nice little shop.

3) Brentwood/Richmond Heights area? The R.E.I. store. http://www.rei.com/map/store#MO

4) Clayton/Richmond Hts./St. Louis? http://mesacycles.com/ http://mesacycles.com/about/store-hours-location/ This I like..."Closed Sunday for product testing"

5) Central West End? Mike's Bikes (St. Louis) http://www.mikesbikesstl.com/contacts.html

READ THIS...Bicycles: How to Choose - http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bicycle.html

Wally World & other discount stores sell (so-called) bicycles in the TOY DEPARTMENT! Real bike or toy bike? Your choice.

Will this Bicycle hold me?

Brandon

I was just wondering if this bike http://www.walmart.com/ip/29-Mongoose-Stat-Men-s-Mountain-Bike-Blue-Silver/26999365 can support me. I'm 6'5 300lb. If not, plz recommend one.

Answer
A) Discount store bikes come in one generic frame size for kids & teens. Waaaaaay too small for someone 6'5" tall.

B) Discount store bikes will not withstand a 300 lb. person on a regular basis. Within a few months (tops) the rear wheel & hub will be toast...trash.

C) Recommendation? Go To A Bicycle Shop. A REAL bicycle shop. Not Amazon.com, K-Mart, Target or Wally World. Ask to see a touring bike with a tall frame size.

What is name of 80s movie where kid invents a flying bicycle?

SilentStev

Well, it doesn't exactly fly. As the boy pedals, the bike harnesses his energy in the form of air pressure, and when he presses a button on the handle bars while popping a wheelie, he is able to jump high and far from the thrust of the air pressure. I remember a scene in which he tested out his invention by jumping over a field goal post on a football field.
I think the kid was Chunk from Goonies.
Found it! It is called Ask Max (1986).

Free Bicycle Helmets???

RaLoh

We have 5 active children and they live in their bike helmets.... the rule in our house is "if it has wheels you had better be wearing a helmet". Bicycle helmets are required by Law here in NYS and it amazes me how many children come to my house without them. If they are at our home without a helmet they are not allowed on their bikes.

Is there a place I can contact for free bike helmets?? I would love nothing more than to make sure every kid in my town has one.... and wears it. Even though it is a law, it is not enforced in my town, which kills me.

Thank you in advance for any information.

Answer
I'm in South Carolina and we have an an organization called "Safe Kids" if you google the name I'm sure that you can find a contact in NY. If not please contact them here in SC and they'll get you networked with the right person

Good Luck

Best hair extension glue for swimming and outdoor activities?

I wear daily extensions, and I am a camp counselor and cannot be spending much time doing my hair in the morning. So I decided just to snip off the clips and glue them in! Thing is, I am going for a week. Campers are gone on Sundays, so I can just re-glue them after 7 days. I just need them to stay during biking, swimming, watersliding, high ropes, and a bunch of those activities. Oh, and food fights and pranks kids will probably pull on me :)

So I need it extra sticky. If they usually stay in for a month, then they'll probably work about a week for me lol. Is Proclaim at Sally's good? Or is there better ones? Thanks!

Answer
All the hair glues are not that great. They will not really last all that long when sweating and swimming. I feel like its a good idea to go to a salon (or school, which does it cheaper) to get them sewn in. That way they will stay for a month or a little longer. Im a hairstylist that for many years used glue in extensions and tried many different glues. I would wash my hair with my extensions in and could feel them come loose and start slipping out, not a good idea for being active. Hope this helps.

My butt has gotten small, how do I get it back?

william c

I've always been known to have a huge butt for a guy. Since a kid my family always made jokes about how my butt was larger than all the females in my household. It was a thing that annoyed me as a kid, but I learned to live with it. It kind of became a part of me, girls seemed to like it too, to be quite honest lol.

Anyways, about a year ago I gained a lot of weight and I wanted to lose it so I went on a strict diet....I didn't eat as much meat(probably ate meat once every month) ate lots of vegetables and fruits and drank lots of antidioxants. Now, the diet worked and I'm actually thinner than I originally was. But there's something I noticed due to my family pointing it out to me in surprise.... my butt has completely gone away. I'm not talking about it slightly getting a bit smaller, I'm talking WENT AWAY. I now have a small and flat ass and it's kind of depressing to be honest... I literally feel ass bones when sitting and I hate it.

Now, my question is.... how do I get my butt back? Or just how do I get my butt to get bigger?
(I'm 20 years old)

Answer
Squats, Lunges, Hip Extensions, One-Legged Deadlifts, Hiking, Biking.

What kind of bike should i get? A bmx or a mountain bike?

polishkid1

Right now i have a bmx bike but i want to know which bike is better for doing tricks and dirt jumping. My friend and i made a big jump in the woods and im not sure if i should jump on a bmx. If i can thats great but if i cant what kind of bike should i buy and what brand? (i dont want it to be too expensive tho)

Answer
If you want to do tricks on pavement and street, get a freestyle bike.
If you want to jump on dirt, get a bmx bike. These are easier to control in the air than a mountain bike.
If you want to go over terrain possibly long distances, get a mountain bike. You'll need the gears if you plan to go over terrain and differnet elevations.
Personally, I think of you are a teenager, it may be time to think about a mountain bike instead of a BMX bike. If you are driving age, don't get a BMX bike. Mountain bikes are still cool if you are diving a car but don't look like a little kid on a BMX bike unless you and your friends are still hardcore into it.
Lastly, DON'T BUY A BIKE AT WAL-MART! Go to a real bike shop.

My son wants a trick bike?? Suggestions?

sweet-rain

Hi,
My son will be 12 soon and wants a trick bike. I had no clue what they are but he's been pointing them out to me when he sees kids on them. I have no idea what type of bike to get him. I brought him to a shop close to my town to look at bikes and they're quite expensive. I guess I'll be spending a lot more than I wanted to spend. Anyone have any suggestions for a beginner bike.
I appreciate any assistance. Thanks!

Answer
Wat i have learned in experience is that boys don't just want to ride their bikes but they want to jump them. I would suggest a Mongoose Fireball as they are not to expensive and are fun and strong. Another option is a good BMX ask your local bike shop for advice BMXing is very fun and the bicycles are basic strong and easy to start of if one wants to learn the art of jumping/trick biking.

What motocross bike do i get?

Jesse

Im a well experienced rider and I outgrew my brothers old Honda 2003 XR80.

Im 14, 5'3 and its power is not enough for me anymore. I wanted a 2009 CRF150R but I'm not sure I will fit on it.

Also, I do not want a trail bike, like a TTR. I'm looking for a motocross bike and a 4 Stoke!!!!
I'm 105 pounds

Answer
The crf150r would fit you at least until you grow a couple more inches. The bike should suit your needs but really I would watch stating you are a well experienced rider as if all you have been on is a xr80 then that is pretty much like saying you can ride a kids 3 wheel trike really well. There is not really any other options to suit your criteria with your height so I guess the crf150r is the bike.

How old do I have to be to race a Honda CRF150r?

go-gurt bo

i live in texas and i am beginning to race. i would like a powerful bike but i don't know what type of bike or engine i should get and how old i have to be to race it. i am 14 and i am 5 foot 10 inches (about). HELP PLEASE!!

Answer
You fit the age requirements for America but you are really too tall to race that bike. Your knees will be up under the bars.
The country I am in kids can race the small wheel version of the crf150r from 9 years of age and then they move to the big wheel version and can race that till they turn 16. In America you cannot race the crf150r till 12 years and some kids have to move on by 14 as they are too tall for it. Like you are. You would do better with the crf250r and you can race that at 14.

Here is a link to the rule book for the ama and you can look up any information you need
http://www.ama-cycle.org/rulebooks/2010/AMARacing_rulebook10_Web_MX.pdf
Wow all I can say is if you have to weigh 65kilos to race a crf150r in america then a load of people would not race at all. I have a 55 kilo son who races pro lites nationally on a crf250r so I think I would re check your rules on that and he also races national supercross on the same bike. He still would not be allowed to race a crf150r by your ruling. There is also no mention of this in the ama rule book.

How much does a Jet Ski cost?

I am the S

I have a dirt bike and a 4-wheeler, and thought it would be fun to try something else. So how much would an average, used but in good condition Jet Ski cost?

Answer
You can find a decent PWC on craigslist.com or ebay but BUYER BEWARE!!!!

Never fork over money that you've worked hard for unless the seller has a clear title IN HAND!!!!

Never purchase any kind of mechanical ride unless you can test drive it. You wouldn't buy a used car off the lot without test driving it first. Here's how to buy a jet ski...

1. Find one near where you live. Rule of thumb: eyes on, hands on
2. Go look at it after contacting the seller. Look it over really well. More on this later.
3. Ask to see the title and a driver's license. Note: match addresses so there's no problem transfering the title to your name.
4. Ask the seller if you can test drive it. If not, there may be something wrong with it. More on this later.
5. Decide how much you are willing to part with.

Ok, now to discuss what to look for.
You want to take with you a small LED flashlight and a telescoping inspection mirror. Look the machine over pretty closely and if the seller seems uneasy, make it worse. Crawl under the trailer and use the light and mirror to look into the intake grate at the impeller. It should be as close to flawless as possible. If not, start mentally taking money off the asking price ($200-400). Also inspect the wear ring. This is a nylon ring around the impeller designed to take the brunt of debris caught in the impeller. It should be smooth with minor scratches, obviously not perfect. If you spot anything caught in the impeller, ask why they are selling it (violent vibration). Low-ball 'em. This is usually an easy fix and the seller may not know it. Also inspect the wear ring from the rear discharge area.

Now, how to test drive one.....
DO NOT JOY RIDE!!! Your test should be done in ten minutes or less. Let the seller know that you will know everything you need to know in that time frame. Any more than ten minutes will iritate the seller.
First obey the no-wake zone if there is one. Then, go full out. Hit the throttle hard and drive it in a straight line looking for it to stutter on the sudden wide open throttle or as it flies across the water. Next, get back to as close to the seller as you can without violating the no-wake zone and spin some tight circles and figure 8s in both directions. This lets the seller know that you are genuinely testing it, and you are looking for it to malfunction or stutter in any way. Make it QUICK and get back to the ramp.

Now the part that really answers your question. I have purchased three jet skis for $1500 including the trailers. One is a 97 Polaris that came with the jet ski, trailer, large RubberMaid tote w/ wheels containing two wetsuits, three adult lifevests, two childrens vests, a ski rope, and a gallon of 2 stroke oil! One is a 99 TigerShark 1100 with a Karavan trailer. One is a 2000 Yamaha with a trailer.

So you can get some good machines for reasonable prices if you know what to look for. I personally will NOT pay more than $2500 for any used jet ski older than 3 yrs.

What is your opinion on leashes for children?

Brittany

I don't have any children, I was just wondering what people thought about leashes for little ones. :)

Answer
I believe they are a valuable piece of safety equipment and training equipment. And that every child who is walking near a street or in a busy area should either be held, in a stroller, in a shopping cart, or have a leash, apron-string, piece of twine, or whatever in order to enforce holding the mother's hand until they are over 4 and more capable of controlling their impulses. And that until 7-8 children should not be allowed to cross the road without holding a hand and if they are not going to hold a hand then they should also be forced to wear a leash while holding the hand so if they let go mom has more of a chance of getting them under control without it ending in tragedy.

I believe they are about as degrading as a car seat, child safety gate, bike helmet, etc. And anyone who sees them as laughable or ridiculous need to grow up and do an Internet search on children hit in parking-lots or by cars under 4 years old that would have been avoided with a safety leash.

This isn't a sign of a lazy parent. There's a right and wrong way to use them yes, you don't just slap them on the kid and drag them around. This is a safety device. You have your child hold your hand and have the leash on them. If they decide to let go and run away from you, you don't have to dash and grab their hand (risking an injury to yourself, to the other child you may be carrying, or to them by grabbing their hand too hard) you simply hold the leash firmly then go and regain control. They can't get away so the frantic grab isn't an issue. And it tells you that they're not ready to be trusted to only hold your hand yet.

And this isn't a new phenomenon either. People have been using apron strings or twine to tie around their littlest ones to keep them close for so many years that it's even a saying "time to cut the apron string."

So here's some links to stories that could have been prevented by a leash. Deaths, injuries, etc. I never keep a running list, I actually just do a search whenever I see a question like this... there's always some easily found. Child hit in parking lot or toddler hit by car gives you examples every time.

"the mother of boy (aged 3) thought he was behind her as she left the store and walked to her vehicle, both hands full of items. When she turned around, she saw her sonâs head underneath the truck, Williams said. Williams said the boy reportedly ran behind the truck as it pulled out of a parking space." - 12/5/2010 link1

"The 21-month-old Richfield boy is in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. The accident happened Thursday evening at the Menomonee Falls Home Depot. Police tell FOX6 News the boy simply darted away from his mother as she was loading items in her vehicle." - 1/7/2011 link2

".. stopped when a mother and her children stepped from behind parked cars into the public-vehicular access area in front of Wild Wood Forest Elementary School...The driver started moving forward again when she thought the whole family had passed, but Jaciel Gomez Hernandez, of Zebulon (aged 3), walked out from between the parked cars, the report says. The driver told police that she heard the boy's mother scream, then swerved to the left." 3/29/2010 (death) link3

"Corpus Christi police said a 3-year-old boy died after being struck while trying to run from the family's vehicle to the entrance of a Chuck E. Cheese theme restaurant." 5/28/2010 link4

"Police say 2-year-old Gabriel Johnson was with his mother and other children, possibly siblings, when he darted into traffic shortly before 7:30 p.m. An SUV driven by Robert C. Tausinger, 49, of Clearwater struck the boy. Tausinger was going west on Cleveland." 3/20/2010 link 5

"The boy's family said the boy was behind his father, who told the car to slow down. The driver of the first car, Alisha Ciancio, said she looked in her rearview mirror and saw Michael walk out and get hit by the car. "As it came across, it never stopped," Ciancio said. "The parents were running behind it trying to get it to stop. It came, hit the boy, went across him."" 7/17/2010 link 6

Add: My daughter has an Elmo harness and Elmo rides in front... like her brother rides in front of me. She wears the harness (with the leash off) as a toy around the house she loves it so much. Now convince me it's degrading.

Add: Voice, just an FYI, there are plenty of examples of children injured or killed who slipped their hand from their caretakers and within seconds ran into a road. I just don't consider holding their hands good enough unless you have a grip firm enough to pick them up by their hand if they start to pull away. I like the leash as a way of teaching to hold hands while keeping them safe.

The GREAT new Dog Sulky Cart?!?!?

Annie

I currently own a 2 yr old very energetic GSD and am curious about this new Sulky cart. For those who are not familiar, the dog sulky cart is a dorsal hitch instead of a "normal" dual shaft hitch (attachs above dog shoulders vs attached on both sides of shoulders). I am curious if anyone owns a dog sulky cart and if so, does your dog have any issues with back/shoulder problems due to the position of the hitch?
I have already trained my GSD to pull a sled and he frequently helps with my yard work (moving downed tree branches, collecting garden produce in wagon, etc). My main concern is that the sulky cart is not ergonomically correct for a GSD
Here is a website with the dog sulky : http://www.rjwalsh.com.au/mini/index.htm
Here is a website with the dog sulky : http://www.rjwalsh.com.au/mini/index.htm

Answer
Interesting question! I had never seen this sulky cart mechanism before. It looks to be an adaptation of the tag-along child bike. Knowing dog anatomy I would not use this harness.

A dogs greatest strength is in his neck and shoulders and his propulsion comes from hind-quarters. For that reason, the normal shaft hitch uses the dog's natural build to pull a load forward in a straight line with his body. Therefore, I believe this is the most energy efficient and comfortable (for the dog) method to use.

In this specific hitch it would appear that the dog would have to pull both downward and forward to move a load. Because of this unusual pull-angle, I would think that whatever energy a dog would expend to move a load forward in the traditional harness would be doubled to pull the same device forward in this sulky harness.

I too would have concerns. Doubling the energy needed to do the same work would most likely result in unnecessary injuries to a dog. I'm even more surprised to see this harness on the ponies! It should be obvious this design can potentially damage equine backs, knees and fetlocks.

It will be interesting what those with adequate experience with this harness say so I will continue to watch your answers.

Thank you very much for (1) training working dogs, as I believe all dogs thrive best with a 'job', and (2) for asking an intelligent question on DS - those are VERY rare here!

Have fun with your dogs!.

16 year old Starter bike?

QUESTIONS

I would like to spend about $1000 dollars for a bike but would be ok with a little more if its necessary. I want a sporty bike but i don't know how to ride so something that is good to learn on at the same time. nothing to fast that will make it hard not to get myself killed.
Tell me if I need to spend more money or if i'm thinking about my first bike the wrong way. I am 16 and my parents trust me and i am generally a smart responsible kid if that effects your choice.
thanks for any help

Good, Cheap starter Motor bike Sportster?

Frankizzle

Well im 15 years old right now and im going to get a bike as soon as i turn 16 and of course its just to look bada$$ and To get from Point a to b just for school. I know there alot of Concentration and effort when u ride a bike and you have to be careful. i was just wondering what type of bikes are good For starting i really really like the looks of sportsters and they just look more comfortable. anyways Iv seen and Drulled over the Iron 883 and i realy like that bike! like crazy i sware id do anythign for one ;P but i dont want to get one till i have pactice as my brother say about bikes "there only 2 kids of drivers for bikes..The one who fallen, and the ones who havent yet'. the thing about bikes is i want one that 2 seater and i kno the Iron 883 isent. but i know you can make it so i was also woundering is it worth just getting a iron and risk looking dumb with that secon seater.

Answer
The 883 is an excellent starter bike and is easily made for 2 people by adding a passenger pad and pegs or just changing to a 2-up seat.
The bike isn't too heavy, handles well, rides comfortable, and has all the power needed for a beginner rider (not too little and not too much). Once you are comfortable on it and more experienced with it, you will end up wanting more power...that's easy. Sart out with adding a Hi-Flo Air Cleaner and Pipes with the HD Screamin Eagle Super Tuner. Then you can convert it to 1200 by boreing the cylinders with new pistons and getting the bike dyno TUNED, not tested. 883-to-1200 conversions actually produce more power than factory 1200's.
BUT BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING.........TAKE A MOTORCYCLE RIDERS' SAFETY COURSE!!!!
Happy Ridin' Pal!!!!

Good to buy a bike?

terse

I am going nuts trying to buy a bike. I am going to bike shops and getting very conflicting information. I don't know if I am getting fed a line of BS because someone is trying to make a commission or what.

My situation is that I am a good athlete that is new to cycling. I had a bike when I was a kid, but haven't been on a bike in years. I am a 30 year old male, 6'2" and 240 lbs. I am not looking to join the X-Games or Tour de France. I want a good bike that I can ride around on for excercise and enjoyment, mainly on pavement, but would also like to be able to go off road a bit. I would ride 3 to 6 days a week. One salesman told me the Trek Navigator 3.0 was the way to go. A different shop told me the Trek 7200 hybrid. Another shop told me to get a Gary Fisher mountain bike. Last shop I went to was hardcore about a Fuji bike. I am trying to educate myself and make a smart purchase, but it is difficult with all of the conflicting information.
A lot of great information here. To add a few notes:
When I am talking about going offroad, I mean a dirt trail in the woods. It is not specifically a bike path. There are some places with rocks and big roots to go over. It is nothing dangerous looking though.

I don't really a pre-set budget. I am not opposed to spending good money as long as I am buying the right thing. Ideally I would like to stay under $2,000, but that is not my main concern.

Is there a certain size bike you suggest? I think it can vary between mountain bikes, hybrids, etc.

Thanks again for all of the great input. If any of you guys that work in bike shops are in the New Jersey area, please let me know. I'd be happy to buy my bike there.

Answer
Very good answers here for a change.

I'll just add a few pieces...

I would personally suggest you go for a mountain bike. The hybrids or cyclo-cross bikes are fine, but seem to do neither terribly well.

The only real problem with riding a mountain bike on the road is rolling resistance. You'll work harder on pavement, but so what. If it is for fitness, who cares.

Moutnain bikes are certainly more comfortable. Later, if you want to do a triathalon, or become a roadie, you can invest in another bike. Mountain bikes are very good all purpose bikes, with good versatility and can take abuse.

You fall into what is affectionately known as the Clydesdales -- a big guy. Still, most anyone under 300 pounds won't have an issue with a frame unless you are dropping off of cliffs, getting big air.

And yes, bike shops absolutely will try to sell you on the their bikes, and disparage their competitors. Margins are slim, and bike sales are flat right now.

Your BUDGET will go a long way toward determining what you need. Do not go for a $200 Wal-Mart or discount bike. But, you don't have to spend $2,000 either. You can probably find a very nice hardtail that would meet all your needs in the $8000-$1100 range, perhaps less.

The vast majority of "name brand" bikes are made within miles of each other in Taiwan. They are all perfectly good, and offer good value. Bikes from Giant, Specialized, Trek, Gary Fischer, Kona, etc are all good choices.

I like Mountain Bike Review (link below). You do get biased opionions, but can at least screen the bikes you are looking at, and see if users have noticed fatal flaws. Read up, and you might be able to narrow your choices.

Try the bikes you are interested in. It's rare these days, but some shops do have demo models you can borrow or rent.

Don't be afraid to ask if they will discount a bike. There is a lot a shop can do to earn your business. Just reward them with your service needs later.

Good luck!

EDIT: Have a shop size you. It's the best way, and you can then feel the difference in person, rather than using the formula from a book.

How much does a motocross bike cost?

Preeti D

Answer
it depends ir u buy a brand new bike, or a second hand bike!
then are u buy a 2 or a 4 stroke bike!

Brand New Prices (4 stroke/"thumpers)
50cc 4 stroke bikes will run u a good 500$-$1000
80-85 4 strokes bike run $1200-$2500
100cc- 4 strokes will run $2500-$3200
250cc-950cc 4 strokes will run $5000-$15000

Nrand New Prices (2 stroke)
50cc 2 stroke (or pit bikes) run $2500-$3000
80-85cc 2 stroke run $2000-$3500
125cc 2 stroke run $3500-$5000
250cc run anyware from $4500-$7000

second hand bikes:

80cc-85cc 4 strokes $500-$1200
100cc-125cc 4 strokes $1000-$1500
250cc-950cc 4 stroke $2500-$9000

80cc-85cc 2 stroke $1200-$2500
125cc-250cc 2 stroke $1200-$2500

Now my recommendations for begginers at the ages of 5-7 is to buy a 50cc bike or a PW-80 these are great bikes, however i prefer the Pw-80 cause it has more power & is a great learning bike! reccomend 4 stroke bikes [however the PW-80 isn't a 4 stroke but, i still recommend it!] by these bike cheap second hand so that if its destroyed u won't have to pay affortune buying then fixing it!

Next u run urself into 80-100cc bikes I again reccomend 4 strokes start with a cheap & old XR-80 or a TTR-100! these cost next to nothing! cause remember if its old & cheap & ur kid destroys it @ least u didn't spend a fortune on it!
ages 8-12! best suttend [optional]

now that ur kid is confident in his abilities & wants to go faster here is were the big racer bikes come in! 2STROKES! these are the fasters & powerful bikes on the market! their also light! buy him a second hand 80-85cc 2 stroke bike! these cost about $1000-$1500!

*Honda are the least tempremental & are the strongest!
*Yamahas are the fastest & give a little trouble!
*Suzuki has the best frame [this is what i ride & they are great] they arn't really temprimental!
*Kawasakis are the slowest of the bunch & but a little less tempremental then the Suzuki!

When Starting out on these 2 stroke bikes u must remember to keep the revulations up that means & lower speeds lower gears!
the lower the gear the better the straktion but higher revs! after about 30min on a track with consecutive gear changes u will start to feel the revs in ur hands & it may numb them! but don't worry the feeling will go away it only means ur body isn't used to the revs yet!

Now when u grow out of that bike sell it & get ur self a 125cc 2 stroke these are much faster then the 80-85cc but arn't to much power!

i currently ride a [race stock] Rm-85cc L [L means big wheel, it only means it has more power then the standard version, yamaha, honda & kawasaki all have the same equivilant!] & i tried my freinds dads YZ-250cc & beleive me the bike is to powerful for a 14-15 year old kid!
Plus the majority of the tracks around the country are standard 125cc tracks which means even thou 250cc bikes ride them it only means that they can do every thing cleanly all beacuse they have all the more power for the track!

250cc 2stroke bikes have a lot of power & most of the tracks around the nation are geared for 125cc bikes so its nice to have a 250cc bike but let ur kid get used to the poower or a 125cc first! otherwise it isn't to much fun!
same rules applie for the 250cc as they do for 125cc or 80-95cc
honda is the stronges
yamaha is the fastes
suzuki has the best springs
& kawasaki is generally the slowers of the bunch but a good all around bike! (however i hear its the best 125cc bike [good to keep in mind]!)

But 1 more thing about motocross that i havn't mendtioned yet!
4Strokes have a little thing called a thumper!
these are generlly a 125cc-450cc 4stroke bike!
a thumper is a racing tearm that means the bike has a lot of power is loud (kinda like jet fighter) or the racing equivelant of a 2 stroke bike!
a 4 stroke class is set differnt from the 2stroke class!

see a 2stroke race is set up all 80/85 bikes race
125 race
& 250 race

well a 4 stroke is a heavier bike cause it has more sprigs batteries & more ussless execeries!

so u take lets say a 125cc 4 stroke vs a 85cc 2stroke!
now thats about the same power!

see a 4 stroke cc divided by 2 is the 2stroke equivelant
125/2 is a 80-85cc 2stoke equivilant
450/2is a 250cc 2stroke equivilant!

now when u compare the 2 bikes all around the 4 stroke has more power up against its same "class" 2 stroke copetitors & has a much faster power band which really helps in corners!
plus they can idle @ low revs while 2 strokes have to stay @ mostly higher revs!

so genneraly it all depends how u ride!
u want power get a 2 stroke!
u want to save money get a 2 stroke!

when i blow a engine on my Rm-85cc it cost me & my dad $85
for the standard 85cc piston [& 0-rings ect.] & about 40 min to fix the bike! the first time u change the piston it may take 1hour but u will eventually cut it down to 30-40min!

now the 125cc 4stroke equivellant! sure u can buy the piston..., & 0-rings & valves & 0-rings ect.
see the 4strokes have more moving parts making it more complicated & down right impossible to fix urself!
unless u are some macanic down & ur local motorcycle shop then don't even try fixing it!
these blow pistong may only come once every 2 years but guess what when they go they cost thousands of dollars to fix!

here are some more details on what u should buy to sutie ur kids needs!
have fun & happy trails.., either on the track or in a forest trail!

begginer motocross riders between the ages of 5-10 should start out with a little bike know as the PW-80!
this is a 2stroke Automatic bike [just let off the gas & swich gears..., no clutch involved] these bikes are great bigginers bikes & i started on 1!
they run from $800-$1000 second hand price
or about $1500-$2000 brand new
if u buy this bike second hand [which i highly recommend] & u give it some new decals & a pain job u will make a profit off it!

if u are still a begginner & are between the ages of 10-12 years old then buy a XR-80!
this is a Honda 4 stroke bike. yes it is may seem like the same cc as a PW-80, but it isn't it is a much bigger & a little more powerful bike!
if u are new to the motocross world or just got sold ur previas 50cc-pw-80 bike then this is the next step!
this bike is a 80cc 4 stroke [change gears with a clutch] and runs about $1000-$1500!
this again was my second bike!
with a new paint job, decals, & low amount of engine work u again will make a nice profit!

Now comes the next step were u need SPEED!
this is were u are feeling confident and speend, u wanna fly then get ur self a 80cc-85cc 2stroke racing bike!
CR-80/Cr-85 (Honda)
YZ-80/Yz-85 (Yamaha)
RM-80/RM85 (Suzuki)
KX-80/Kx-85 (Kawasaki)

now these are the primmary four 13-15 year old kids ride!
these bike can easly fly about 40-60 mph (60mph if u have all race engine)

these bike brand new run about $3000-$4000
or second hand $1000-$1500

the same brands for the 250cc

Bikes for kids what brand should I go for it?

AW0405

decent bike for age 5, 9 &11.

Answer
Forget Brands!

At their age they won't give a hoot, A cheap store bike is just the job!
Avoid cheap full suspension because they will fall to bits before your kids grow out of them (which is another reason I said buy cheap, 'cos in next to no time they will be too big for them)

If you are determined to get Branded stuff then check these out, they specialize in kids bikes.

Best of Luck.

EDIT: Nice of you to amend your answer Bob, after I have given mine! (It's protocol on the cycling site to show ammendments, - just so you know for next time OK?)

why is my 7 year old scarred to play? and how can he lose that ?

Q. i have a 7 year old son that doesn't like to play. he is very scared to get on swings, run around with kids because he scarred of falling. he doesn't like monkey bars even if i hold him because he thinks he will fall. he doesn't want to ride a bike with training wheels because he doesn't want to get hurt.
he never wants to try something new. when we go to a family party he doesn't want to dance because he is shy and doesnt want people laughing.

he is scarred of everything!!! don'tnt know how to make him lose his fears...also in school he lets other kids tell him what to do he gives away when people need it and even money if he has it. he has a very nice heart and he will give up his stuff just to help someone but dintnt want him to be a push over but also not to be mean. how can i help him ?

i put him in soccer but he is scarred of the ball hitting him. he goes to practice and plays but he doesn't want to be near the ball but he likes the sport.

What can i do?
no, i don't take it offensively. you might be right and it might be something i need to do. this has been happening for a while now but it was worst before. now he plays more and is kind of losing his fear but they are still there. he is very scare to try something new. i didn't want to take him to a psychologist because i thought maybe if i took him out more often he would just lose it little by little but i guess not.

Answer
well kids are not born with fears, when we are babies we have 2 main fears, heights and loud noises and everything else we learn, so at some point in life you or someone else has taught him to be scared of these things, like saying don't do that you might get hurts etc, my grandmother taught me to be scared of dogs, and now my kids are scared of them because they saw me running from them when they were little.

So you need to get him some therapy if you really want to stop this, because just making him do these things will make it worse, and he might just snap, either get him professional help, or leave it.

but the giving stuff away is not good, tell him not to give people at school things, if necessary do not give him any money to give away.

what is a good bike to use for racing for a 7 year old?

EpicRacer

my little bro is getting into racing and i want to get him off the piece of crap he's been riding. he doesnt need anything expensive or fancy, maybe a 6 speed or something simple. he's justing starting out so i have to "train" him a lot. i was looking at getting him a kids specialized since i have a Spec Epic, so i though matching bikes would be a cool thing. he rides a 20", let me know if there any other good bike out there. i dont want to spend more than $300. i think the specialized was $270.

right now he's got a purple Rallye (not Raleigh!) that barely works and weighs almost as much as my bike, lol.
this is for XC mountain biking. i know the emphasis at this age should be fun, but he needs a bike that actually works. i dont want to turn him into a "win at all costs" racing machine.

Answer
gosh i love purple. at the age of 7 though the most important thing is having fun...actually it still is for me at 33. He probably wont understand the signifigance of having a Specialized and probalby could care less that you ride an Epic. Just make sure when your "training" him, that you train him how to have fun and respect riders and trails....oh and how to fix simple things like flats, chain suck, etc...

Cycling shorts and Jerseys?

dread head

I was in my both of my local bike shops. I rode my road bike up to them and I checked out a few cool things that I wanted to buy. I got to talking to a guy about riding. He said that people look down upon people that don't wear bike shorts and a jersey. I can see the practicality behind them, but who cares what a person is wearing!!? So, why is it that some people have problems with the people that don't dress the part of the cyclist?

Answer
It's a 'club' thing. Just as Boy Scouts have a uniform, serious cyclist do too. It's a put off to the general public who don't understand why adults would prance around in such a silly looking outfit.

Actually, the lycra shorts and gaudy jerseys are very functional items for anyone who rides a lot, especially on road bikes. I wear the shorts and a synthetic t shirt, having no use for the specialized jerseys. Being old and a bit modest about the shorts, I put on a pair of regular shorts over them, but that's just me. Have no problem at all with those less modest.

Wear whatever you want to and ride, ride, ride.

Motocross equipment???? (and how to convince my parents)?

Sadie Lady

Okay so I already asked about motocross, (thank you for the info I got it was very helpful) . But now I have a little problem. I need to be able to convince my parents that I can do it and to let me. Also I would like an idea about where to get a bike and equipment, but it's gotta be CHEAP. I will probably be paying for things myself and I'm only 13. I need to know expenses and equipment thanks so much!! :) ((and where do get it cheap)) HOW TO CONVINCE PARENTS TOO PLEASE!!!!

Answer
Bike can be purchase used off of Ebay, Craigslist, Bikefinds and Cycletrader.

Most motorcycles, even if they are "kids" bikes will usually run you $500 to $1000. Anything under $500 is going to need work. If you look long and hard enough you can find one, but you better have cash in hand and be able to get to the guy who is selling it first.

You did not give your height and weight, so I do not know how big or small of a bike you would need, but here is an example of a bike for sale on Ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-PW80-2005-/320893430453?pt=US_motorcycles&hash=item4ab6bd2ab5
and another:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1978-yz80-runs-great-/280871051869?pt=US_motorcycles&hash=item416538225d

New and used gear can be purchased from the same places (Ebay, Craigslist, etc), plus yard sales, garage sales and flea markets.

I was able to pick up my daughter (2-years ago) a used 1991 Honda XR100 R for $300 (Craigslist). Used Bell full face helmet - $35.00 (Ebay). Used Ocelot motocross boots $15.00 (yard sale). Used HRP shoulder pads and chest protector $10.00 (yard sale). Goggles $10.00 (Ebay). Motocross racing pants with knee and hip pads $55.00 (Ebay). Racing jersey with elbow pads $25.00 (Ebay). Padded racing gloves $15.00 (Wal Mart padded mechanics gloves). So for a bike and all the gear it came to a grand total of $465 my daughter was up and running. I did have to purchase a new carb for the bike, which I got of Ebay for $47.00. So that brought the grand total up to $512.00.

You can get away a little cheaper if you don't purchase racing pants and a jersey. I originally bought her some soccer knee and shine pads for $10.00 at a garage sale that she used until we got her the racing pants. She would just put them on over her sweat pants. She also just used a sweatshirt to ride in instead of a jersey.

Minimum gear you will need will be a helmet (SNELL approved) and boots. Then when you get the money buy gloves and goggles.

Convincing your parents is difficult to say. My wife and myself were all for my daughter riding, so it wasn't hard for her at all. All she did was ask. It took me about 3 months to get everything for her to be up and riding. It is a fun and great sport. My daughter is 13 now (same age as you) and she loves it. She has crashed and hurt herself, but she still loves to ride. It is excellent exercise and most of all, it is fun. It is easier to convince people that have ridden before. I know of only one person who has ridden a motorcycle and did not like it....and I know a lot of people...lol.

Feel free to have your parents email my wife and / or me, we will be willing to answer any questions they may have.

Good luck

New York outlawing quick release bicycle wheels?

bikeworks

I have recently learned that the NY legislature is attempting to pass a law disallowing the sale of ANY bicycles with quick release front wheels.

I am not kidding.

So, if you value the ability you gain with having quick releases and you live in New York CALL YOUR LAWMAKER NOW. It seems to have already passed part of the legislature.
Jay and Chad.. I wish I could give you further info. I came across this jewel while interviewing for a Product Manager position at a NY based bicycle company... not a retailer, but a brand name product supplier.

I was aware of the NJ bill which is equally crap, but the NY take is that ALL quick releases must go.
CM.. thanks for the input. The general feeling in the supply side of the bike industry is that if this bill is passed the next inevitable step will be taken.

Answer
I don't know about New York, but New Jersey is debating a law that bans the use of quick-release skewers on child bikes and bikes with wheels smaller than 20 inches.

Quote: It shall be an unlawful practice for any person to sell a bicycle intended for use by children with a front wheel diameter of 20 inches or less, which is equipped with a quick release wheel , exclusive of specialty adult bicycles.

While there may be other issues about this bill, it is NOT about banning QR skewers all together.

When do kids get the hang of riding a bike?

dolly

My son just turned two, and he can't seem to get the hang of pedaling his trike that he got for his birthday. I was just wondering if that's normal, I thought he'd be ready by now! We put him in it and show him how to pedal, push him around, try and coax him, but hmmmm. Maybe he just doesn't have the coordination yet????
That's good to know, lol. He's my first child, and I really don't know what to expect when reaching certain milestones.

Answer
My son just turned 3 in June and he is just now figuring out the whole pedaling thing on his trike that he got for his 2nd birthday. He is just now developing the muscles to push himself and a bike, and the coordination to figure out left, right, left, right. I don't think there is necessarily a deadline for this one, it depends on your child's size, the distance to the pedals, coordination, motivation, etc. A lot of factors. We have a friend of his that is 6 months older and he is already on a bike with training wheels and tearing it up but he is about twice the size of my son! Just keep practicing and don't force it, you want your son to like riding his bike and he will once he figures it out! I've never heard of someone who didn't know how to pedal as an adult! LOL

Do you think MOTORCYCLES/BIKES?

Kase

Do you think 17-19 is too young to learn how to ride a ninja250?
Actually I am a girl...

and everybody keeps leaning on me too get the 250.... What do you think?

Answer
If you were my kid, you would have learned to ride long before this. As to the 250, everyone is pushing it because it is a remarkable little bike. There are guys going on sport rides with the big dogs and running them in Ironbutt events. At the same time, it is small and easy to manage, and quite mild-mannered unless you twist it enough to use all 19,000 revs. A learner bike that you will not outgrow as soon as other 250s, if at all.

The bike for you depends more on your physical stature; it has less to do with riding it than with the ability to manage it in parking lots, in slow traffic, and if you drop it. In fact, the whole concept of outgrowing a bike is ridiculous. If you become a serious motorcyclist, you will own dozens of bikes throughout your life as a rider. You will sell one and buy another not because you out grew one, but because you used it up, or lost interest, or saw something you liked more. You will own more than one motorcycle at a time, perhaps many more.

If the 250 suits you now, buy it. It will do everything you need it to and more. It is not your last bite at the apple.

Grant S

Answer
the yz 250 if he is willing to be uncomfortable the first year on it, but if not the yz 85 for racing and ttr 125 for trail riding. But you DEFINITELY want to go to a yamaha dealer and have him sit on different ones until he finds one that will work for him. Thats the only real way to tell.

People who were kids in the 80's:?

Happy Litt

What things make you think the most of the 80's?
ie.My Little Pony, He-Man, A-Team, legwarmers, hammer pants(late 80's), Star Wars toys, Get Along Gang, etc..

Answer
Memories of when I was a little girl:

(I was born in 1973)

You had that Fisher Price Doctor 's Kit with a stethoscope that actually worked.

You owned a bicycle with a banana seat and a plastic basket with flowers on it.

You learned to skate with actual skates (not roller blades) that had metal wheels.

You had nightmares after watching Fantasy Island .

You had rubber boots for rainy days and Moon boots for snowy days. YEAH! ~ You owned a "Slip-n-Slide",on which you injured yourself on a sprinkler head more than once.

You owned "Klick-Klacks" and smacked yourself in the face more than once.

You had either a "bowl cut" or "pixie," not to mention the "Dorothy Hamill". People sometimes thought you were a boy.

Your Holly Hobbie sleeping bag was your most prized possession.

You wore a poncho, gauchos, and knickers. And now they're back in style!

You begged Santa for the electronic game, Simon.

You had the Donnie and Marie dolls with those pink and purple satiny shredded outfits.

You spent hours in your backyard on your metal swing set with the trapeze. The swing set tipped over at least once.

You had homemade ribbon barrettes in every imaginable color. (Oh yeah!)

You had a pair of Doctor Scholl's sandals (the ones with hard sole & the buckle). You also had a pair of salt-water sandals (AKA: Jellies!)

You wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder really bad; you wore that Little House on the Prairie-inspired plaid, ruffle shirt with the high neck in at least one school picture; and you despised Nellie Olson!

You wanted your first kiss to be at a roller rink.!

Your hairstyle was described as having "wings" or "feathers" and you kept it "pretty" with the comb you kept in your back pocket.

~ When you walked, the "wings" flapped up and down, looked like you were gonna "take off"

You know who Strawberry Shortcake is, as well as her friends, Blueberry Muffin and Huckleberry Pie.

You carried a Muppets lunch box to school and it was metal, not plastic. With the thermos inside!

You and your girlfriends would fight over which of the Dukes of Hazzard was your boyfriend.

YOU had Star Wars action figures, too!

It was a big event in your household each year when the "Wizard of Oz" would come on TV. Your mom would break out the popcorn and sleeping bags!

You often asked your Magic-8 ball the question: "Who will I marry...Shaun Cassidy, Leif Garrett, or David Cassidy..?"

You completely wore out your Grease, Saturday Night Fever, and Fame soundtrack record album.

You tried to do lots of arts and crafts, like yarn and Popsicle-stick God's eyes, decoupage, or those weird potholders made on a plastic loom.

You made Shrinky-Dinks and put iron-on kittens on your t-shirts!

You used to tape record songs off the radio by holding your portable tape player up to the speaker.

You had subscriptions to Dynamite and Tiger Beat.

You learned everything you needed to know about girl issues from Judy Blume books (Are you there God, It's me, Margaret.)

You thought Olivia Newton John's song "Physical" was about aerobics.

You wore friendship pins on your tennis shoes, or shoelaces with heart or rainbow designs.

You wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer.

You drowned yourself in Love's Baby Soft - which was the first "real" perfume you ever owned .. .

You glopped your lips in Strawberry Roll-on lip gloss till it almost dripped off.

Was Rush Limbaugh the neighborhood fat kid?

diceman

Heard something to that effect.

Answer
Rush had to be the kid that couldn't keep up, so you and your other friends would leave him watching the bicycles eating a bag of Doritos, and a box of Butterfingers.

Which beach is better?

Jacob

I just wanted varying opinions on virginia beach vs. ocean city md. I do have kids well so what appreciate any advice.

Answer
The beach is much better in Ocean City, MD. Also the cultural opportunities are better and there is a lot to do, with the Assawoman Bay on one side and the ocean on the other. The boardwalk is great fun, the food is great and the amusement areas are family oriented.

Be sure to take a day and picnic on Assateague Island. It is a breathtaking strip of beach, populated by wild ponies. They'll come right up and rifle through your beach bag looking for treats.

Ocean City is the southernmost beach, with Fenwick, Bethany and Rehoboth Beaches to the north. Don't worry if the beach is crowded, just go north until you find a place you like. Henlopen State Park in Lewes, Delaware marks the convergence of Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The town of Lewes (pronounced Lew-is) is a Dutch settlement dating back to the 17th century. It is filled with history, shops, antiques and wonderful restaurants such as Kindle and Half Full.

Rehoboth also boasts a boardwalk, wide white sandy beaches and history galore. For family fun, nothing beats Bethany Beach. The boardwalk, shops and eateries are all geared toward families and the pace is happily quiet for parents and even grandparents. There are all sorts of activities and there are free concerts on the boardwalk every night.

There's no sales tax in Delaware, making Bethany an even better bargain. If you stay a few blocks off the ocean, you'll find prices very affordable. Bethany West features a pool, tennis courts, bike trains and a shuttle to the beach which is less than 1 mile away.

hotel in virginia beach nice and relaxing, but stuff for kids any suggestions?

brittevans

Answer
We stayed at the Breakers Hotel http://www.breakersresort.com/
It was a great location, right on the boardwalk in the middle of it all. The hotel also has a pool.

There are multiple pavilions on the boardwalk offering family friendly entertainment (such as movies/magicians/other performances) You can read more about it here: http://www.beachstreetusa.com/beachstreetusa_web_site_043.htm

There were also multiple places on the boardwalk that offered family bikes for rent (I've never seen these before, but here's an example of one: http://www.seagullmotel.com/images/BikesforWeb.jpg)

Christmas ideas for a 14 year old boy. Really desperate for answers?

Kieran S

Im 14, Christmas is coming up, i have absolutely no ideas. I wouldnt mind money but i really want something to open on christmas, i only have video game ideas but i cant think of anything else

please help me

Answer
I have a 12 year old son, who probably has the same sort of interests as a 14 year old. Video games are good, as well as sports equipment. What sports does he play? buy him a jersey, a lacrosse stick, a new bike, or tickets to a game. I bought my son super bowl tickets last year and he still thaks me to this day.

Answer
summer girls-LFO

Yeah, I like it when the girls stop by in the summer
Do you remember, do you remember
When we met that summer?

New Kids On The Block had a bunch of hits
Chinese food makes me sick
And I think it's fly when girls stop by
For the summer, for the summer
I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch
I'd take her if I had one wish
But she's been gone since that summer, since that summer

Hip hop, marmalade, spick-and-span
Met you one summer and it all began
You're the best girl that I ever did see
The great Larry Bird, Jersey 33
When you take a sip, you buzz like a hornet
Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets
Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby
Somethin' in your eyes really drove me crazy
Now I can't forget you and it makes me mad
Left one day and never came back
Stayed all summer, then went back home
McCullay Culkin was in Home Alone
Fell deep in love, but now we ain't speakin'
Michal J. Fox was Alex P. Keaton
When I met you, I said my name is Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie & Fitch

New Kids On The Block had a bunch of hits
Chinese food makes me sick
And I think it's fly when girls stop by
For the summer, for the summer
I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch
I'd take her if I had one wish
But she's been gone since that summer, since that summer

Cherry Pez, Coke Crush, Rock Stud, Boogie
Used to hate school, so I had to play hookie
Always been hip to the B Ball style
Known to act wild and make a girl smile
Love New Edition and the Candy Girl
Reminds me of you 'cause you rock my world
You come from Georgia, where the peaches grow
They drink lemonade and speak real slow
You love hip hop and rock and roll
Dad took off when you were four years old
There was a good man named Paul Revere
I feel much better, baby, when you're near
You love Fun Dip and Cherry Coke
I like the way you laugh when I tell a joke
When I met you, I said my name was Rich
You looked like a girl from Abercrombie & Fitch

New Kids On The Block had a bunch of hits
Chinese food makes me sick
And I think it's fly when girls stop by
For the summer, for the summer
I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch
I'd take her if I had one wish
But she's been gone since that summer, since that summer

In the summertime, girls got it goin' on
Shake and wiggle to a hip hop song
Summertime girls are the kind I like
I'll steal your honey, like I stole your bike
Boogaloo shrimp and pogo sticks
My mind takes me back there oh so quick
Let you off the hook, like my man Mr. Limpet
Think about that summer and I bug 'cause I miss it
I like the Color Purple, macaroni and cheese
Ruby red slippers and a bunch of trees
I'd call you up, but what's the use?
I like Kevin Bacon, but I hate Foot Loose
I came in the door, I said it before
I think I'm over you, but I'm really not sure
When I met you, I said my name was Rich
You looked like a girl From Abercrombie & Fitch

New Kids On The Block had a bunch of hits
Chinese food makes me sick
And I think it's fly when girls stop by
For the summer, for the summer
I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch
I'd take her if I had one wish
But she's been gone since that summer, since that summer

Summer girls come and summer girls go
Some are worthwhile, and some are so so
Summer girls come and summer girls go
Some are worthwhile, and some are so so
Summertime girls got it goin' on
Shake and wiggle to a hip hop song
Summertime girls are the kind I like
I'll steal your honey, like I stole your bike

New Kids On The Block had a bunch of hits
Chinese food makes me sick
And I think it's fly when girls stop by
For the summer, for the summer
I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch
I'd take her if I had one wish
But she's been gone since that summer, since that summer

That's really messed up how baby skittlez copied me

I want to get a motorcycle?

Patrick A

I am only 15 and i plan on getting my permit in 6 months. i live in California and here once you get a regular driving permit you can get a M1 permit. Once you obtain your M1 permit you can practice riding my cousin is 26 and he rides and he will be my primary teacher. Once you feel comfortable you can take a driven test, but what i was wondering where do you go to do all this? Also recommendations of where to get my gear would be great!

Answer
When I was a kid, there were a lot of small motorbikes. Most kids started on 90ccs or 125, or if you really wanted to push it, you got a 150. We all learned to ride on these machines before moving up to a 350, and maybe finally a 650. The Triumph Bonneville was the big hot bike everyone admired.

We didn't go on the freeway on these little bikes, we just rode them around the neighborhood. They had about the same range as a bicycle.

But today there aren't many small bikes. Kawasaki Ninja 250, Honda Rebel 250, Honda CBR 250. Maybe one or two more. I suppose those are small enough. You want to start out small. At your age you want to take your time learning to ride in residential neighborhoods and back roads.

It would be a good idea to take the MSF course. It's like $300, but it's money well spent (if you have it). They don't teach you to ride, you learn that on your own, by actually riding. What they teach you are some indispensable safety habits that will keep you alive while you are learning. Consider that half of all motorcycle accidents happen to riders with less than a year's riding experience. Not to scare you away but to show you how important safety is when you're just starting out.

Also the DMV waives your riding test if you took the MSF course (and passed it). I've seen the test (it's on YouTube) and I don't know if -I- could pass that test!

Besides the bike, you want to save room in the budget for a helmet, a jacket and gloves, as a minimum. The helmet is required by law, of course. You shouldn't buy one mail-order, you should go to a place where you can try them on. The gloves should be made for motorcycling, and have leather palms. (If you ever fall off a bike, you instinctively put your hands out in front of you. That's why you wear gloves.) And the jacket should be leather or some motorcycle-specific textile.

If you live in Northern California, the best place to look at these things is Road Rider in San Jose. Otherwise, look in Yelp or local.yahoo.com for 'motorcycle accessories'. A good on-line place is Newenough.com. They have good prices on discontinued models, last year's models, overstocks, etc., and they're good about taking it back if you try it on and don't like it. But that's no way to buy a helmet, because you're going to want to try on 30 or 40 or 50 of them.

If you can't ride a bicycle, you should start on one of those, at least to learn to balance and steer. Because if you fall off it's not such a big deal. You will have to learn how the clutch and shift work, it's something you develop a feel for. But riding a motorcycle isn't hard, you can learn it easy enough.

The thing is, if you drive a car for a couple of years, you are more confident because you at least know how traffic works and what to look out for. If the motorcycle is your first real vehicle, you want to learn slowly and very carefully. Avoid high-traffic situations. Don't do stupid stuff. Start on something small and light. Even a scooter might make a good first bike (my first bike was a 200cc scooter, and I loved it so much I found myself going on long rides on weekends.)

Good luck!

Motorcycle vs Bicycle Accidents?

chnkymonke

I'm already pretty certain motorcycle accidents are more fatal, due to the higher speed. However, which occurs more frequently?

Answer
Why don't you ask emergency at hospital and ask a questions. They know more than I see myself.

alot of kids ride the bicycle with out hands on it. Something on the road and it jeporady turn the front wheel in either direction. get crashed. and the storm drainage where the metal cover have long groove. front tire can go into the metal cover. Got fliped.

there is many postive and negative between motorcycle and bicycle. i think both is same issues.

Overwhelmed with 3 kids under 2 y.o?

zenzen

I had two kids 6 and 2 year old and couldn't have another because of the medical reasons so we ended up adopting a sibling group and 1 and 2 year olds. Now I doubt if we made the right decision adopting 2 kids and once because 3 kids under age of 2 is more than difficult. We we told by our adoption agency the older girl is 4 and is is so not 4, she was barely 2 when we met her.

Adopted kids came with a number of medical issues which took us about 6 month to treat them. After a few surgeries and many rounds of drugs they seem to be quite healthy and doing well. We kind of settled in our routine and they got more used to us and their behavior got better but even now it is overwhelming. I don't have anybody to help me during the day and my husband has a long commute and comes home at 8pm when kids go to bed.

I have to drive my 6 year old to school and pick him up every day (takes about 30 minutes round trip twice a day), then I drive my 2 year olds to pre-school twice a week for a half-day. I have to feed them lunch, read to them, change 3 sets of diapers, put them for a nap, go to pick up my older son, do homework with him, cook dinner, feed them, play with kids, wash them and put everybody to sleep. It feels more like running a daycare than having a family, my kids are sweet but due to their young age and attachment issues are very demanding and difficult. I don't even have time to clean the house anymore during the day--I do it when everybody sleeps. One of the worst for me things is taking 3 kids under 2 to public places such as doctors offices, grocery stores, libraries, etc. I always worry somebody will get run over on the parking lot. I also get tired of people looking at us like we are a zoo and not a family and making all kinds of comments especially because of skin colors don't watch and I'm pushing a giant triple stroller with 3 toddlers. I resent my decision to adopt because now it worsened the quality of our lives as a family. Before we had plenty of time for walks, bike ride, movies, theater, play-dates with friends, now it's all gone. I also have very little time to interact with my older son and take him to his activities and sports. It seems to me all I do is take care of basic needs of children: cook, clean, change, drive and repeat. And all they do is scream, run away, make messes and don't listen. I have become a lot less patent with kids than I used to be and I don't like that a single bit. I find it very hard to cope.
Can anybody else have 3 kids under 2 y.o. and one older kid do a good job as a parent without anybodies help and not lose their sanity and not resent children?

Answer
First of all, you did a wonderful thing adopting those two kids! It has always been my dream to adopt as many children as I could possibly support. Right now I have two year old twin boys, a 1 year old daughter, and another one on the way, AS WELL as taking care of my sister's two kids, age 1 and 3 during the day (they go home around 8pm and come at 6am). I am changing FIVE sets of diapers every single day, and it is the worst part...

They all play together and for the most part they get along...but you know toddlers. Their favorite words are "mine" and "no".

This is how I do it: Morning time, everybody gets a diaper change. EVERYbody. Even if they aren't that wet, because it means there is a large possibility that in an hour or so, they will ALL need diaper changes again at the same time. Then, I make breakfast. I cater to my kids so I don't hear five screaming kids about the food. Jasper likes oatmeal every morning. EVERY morning. James likes pancakes, waffles, that sort of stuff (store-bought of course). Jolynn will usually eat oatmeal, but sometimes she is in the mood for canned biscuits. My sister's kids are easy and eat kix or Cheerios or any kind of cereal really. I make a schedule and switch around foods for them, letting THEM choose from a list of what they want to eat.

By that time it's about 7am, and usually the twins will go back to sleep until 9 and the two 1 year olds will too, leaving me and the 3 year old to watch TV or start thinking about lunch or just...cleaning if we want to. Let me tell you. My house is a wreck and I don't clean as often as I would like to...

Anyway, so now it's about 9 and all the kids are getting up. The twins want a warm bottle and the 1 year olds want juice, and the 3 year old wants soda, but I tell her no and give her juice instead (this is an every day thing). So as the kids are waking up, they watch some JoJo's circus or something educational (usually, or Sponge Bob). Then they start to play. They have free roam of my bottom floor, as it is child-proofed. There is a gate keeping them downstairs and out of the kitchen, but they can do whatever they please in the rest of the area. The toy box is in the toy room, there is nothing for them to climb onto, and NO small parts for the babies. I take this time while they are playing to refill all the bottles with water and fold some laundry or think more about what to make for lunch.

All my kids are vegetarians, but my sister's kids are not. My kids are okay with cheese sandwiches for lunch, but my sister's kids prefer hot dogs or prepared kids meals that just have to be heated up. So they eat chicken nuggets or sometimes I get lucky and they'll eat what the other kids are eating. We are only organic with my kids, so when I can get them to eat healthy, I try.

They are constantly snaking throughout the day. Piece of banana here, apples there, yummy kiwi smoothies sometimes :-) Diapers are constantly being changed. As soon as I smell poop, everybody gets a diaper change, or if somebody is wet, everybody gets a diaper change because chances are, they all need one anyway.

And then after lunch they go back to playing. The twins and my 1 year old will sleep until 3, and my sister's kids might take a nap until 2 or sometimes 3. While they are sleeping, I pick up a bit, putting stuff back in it's place or cleaning up juice off the floor.

We eat dinner around 6pm, again, I cater to them, letting them choose what they want from a list we keep. That way they think they are making their own decisions and you have a list of food you are comfortable making.

Just make lots of schedules and stick to them. Make dinner schedules and stick to them. Prepare everything on Sunday when the kids have done down for bed. Make a list of what you need to accomplish that week, with room for innovations, as something always comes up.

You can do this.

When do kids usually start riding a bike?

MardeVigo

Answer
Typically, most are ready at 5 or 6. I got my first two wheeled bike for my 6th birthday and I was able to learn to ride it without training wheels. If you don't mind buying a bike with training wheels, 4 is the typical age. Every kid is different, though. I had a plastic Hot Wheels bike (trike) when I was 4 and I wore that things slap-kadab-out. Personally, I am not a fan of training wheels. They end up warping too quickly and give a false sense of security. I am glad my mom and dad let me learn to ride the big kid way. When learning to ride, if the bike is the right size for the kid, they are able to catch themselves before they hit the ground. If the bike is too big from the get-go, it is dangerous.

what brand is a good affordable kids bike?

Q. we are looking to get our son a 20 inch bike. he is turning 6 in a month and he is a tall boy so we were thinking a 20 inch would last him a good long time compared to his current 16 inch bike. is 20 inch a good size to get him to last him a long time?
what is a good affordable name brand?
by affordable i mean not over $100. are walmart bikes good for kids??

Answer
a walmart bike is fine. the higher priced bikes are made with higher quality parts to ensure a longer life. a kid's bike is only going to be used 3 or 4 years. its fine. happy biking.

yes, huffy is a good brand sold at many stores, maybe even walmart.

hey! also, in my town, our local police force had an auction in the spring. i was surprised at the condition of some of the bikes there. it really is worth trying if your city has any event like this.

How much should you sell a used kids bike for?

justingile

Answer
How much did you pay for it, how much was it used, and what sort of condition is it in now? You can't set a price without answering these questions honestly. A $70 bike that has seen 3 or 4 years of hard use may be worth almost nothing. A well cared for bike may be worth a good percentage of the original price
