BEacause I never have anything to do with them!

Answer
I'm going to assume that you are babysitting for only a short period of time and your goal is not "education"...though we know most everything can be turned into a learning moment. :-)

Sensory fun has always been a big hit. You can even take it outside. If it's really messy have them where their swim suits and then wash them up. The messier they get...the more fun they have. You just have to be prepared for the mess so it doesn't get out of hand. In my home we use a dish tub (dollar store) inside a plastic wading pool. Sand, water/rocks, water and soap, water and two containers of primary colored water (water is always a hit :-) and you can do so much with it.), beans (a mixture), lentils, oatmeal, cornmeal, dirt and water (of course mud :-)) etc...add measuring scoops, spoons, toys etc. The kids love the farm set in the oats...I've even purchased the "squirrel corn" and they had so much fun removing the corn from the cob and then we used it with the farm set. This is a good time to use silly putty, gak, etc.

This age also enjoys "board games". Have them help you decorate a container and help the write down all the names of the games they want to play. Every day have them each choose one during "game time" and play it.

Musical instruments...MAKE YOUR OWN! Add a little music and off you go.

Playdough is always a hit...there are many different recipes!

Obstacle courses are fun at this age.

Sprinkler outside... I set our so it would go over the sidewalk and then they could drive their bikes "through the car wash". :-) I also provided sponges and soapy water to wash their "cars". Buckets of water and large paint brushes keep interest as well.

Open ended art ideas... It's amazing what they can do with collage/craft items. In my school age program I used to have a week where I would set out the low-temp glue gun (no, it does not burn fingers :-)) The kids went haywire and made all sorts of cool creations. With it just you and the little ones you can do more since you'll be right there to supervise.

Fingerpaint is always a favorite. I've even let them do it out side inside of a wading pool and then made prints. They did "body painting" with it ...we just added water and then also hosed them off. So fun.

Good luck.

Does anyone know any fun games for preschoolers to play indoors?

Megan S

I am in charge of the preschool game time for VBS. I have some ideas, but would really like some new ones. The kids like duck, duck, goose and Doggie, Doggie, Where's your bone, etc. So if anyone has some ideas that would be cool! :)

Answer
Here are just the first few from Rainy Day Ideas:
http://www.123child.com/UBB/showthread.php?t=3104

â¢Bring in your bikes inside and had the children ride them on the tile.
â¢Place hula hoops or use laminate shapes on the floor (you can use contact paper to secure them) and have the children hop from one to the next.
â¢Tape down a piece of yarn all over the room and have the children walk on it like a tight rope obstacle course.
â¢Use a fan and a large bubble maker to blow tons of bubbles.
â¢Have the children pretend to be different things, like a car, train, cat, dog etc.
â¢Have the children play with a beach ball while they crab walk... they sit on the floor with with hands and feet on the floor then lift their bottom off the floor. It takes some practice. They can only kick the beach ball.
â¢Have your child toss bean bags into a box or laundry basket. You can use masking tape to mark where the child should stand.
â¢Play marching music and have the children march around the classroom.
â¢Play the "Bunny Hop" and have them dance until they hear the "bump bump bump" that is when they hop.
â¢Play the "Hokey Pokey"

There are more ideas there... just follow the link.

is this short story good so far?

jo64hn

This is my first time trying to write a short story and im 15 and it is my first draft tell me what you think
be honest and its long (what i have done so far)

It started on a winters day, unusual to be honest,it was as cold for a mid novemember day but it had an Augest wind passing by.Well thats Billowood for you, always the first town in Irelands east coast to get the first bad day of winter, even if its got a good wind. The sun was blocked by white cloulds which gave the children and young adults the hope of snow, but it only ever snow a week before christmas which gave the 25th the fun and joys of slush everywhere like snow on the weathered curb or the hardend trees, where some kid would get a new bike and 'have to try it out' and in a cartoon sence, the slush would fall and cover him in an sence of painc, not for himself, but the bike itself. It happened every year, and every year I seen this I tried as an young adult had to cover my smile from looking rude, but everyone laughed in this sence every year and someone kid still goes out.
I was passing by the old book shop when it all first happened.'Barries book of wonders' he calls it,but in this towns size and his size of books, you have to give it some wonder. The average book store would have about two to three books per person in every town or village if it was a local book store,Barry had 20 per eye in town, which varried from world known novels like 'How To Kill a Mocking Bird' and 'PS I love you' to locals books with locals own written work of stoires and poetry and everything inbetween.
As I was walking passed I smelled the sweet smell of fresh baked bread from Miss Jones bakery which arcoss the street from the book store and the fainter smell of perfume from Miss Jones, i said hi to who ever I should meet along my way and I then poped in to see how my sister was doing in her cloths shop. When I entered I would ask her once again jokely is she going to fix that squicky doorhinge and she would always answer with 'I thought it was you that said he who broke it,fix it and if he can't fix it, pay one that can' which would cause a little laugh,as big as laugh you could get from a old joke between brother and sister.
As I leaved from her shop,i walked passed the book store where Barry keeps trying to get my teenage poetry that he says he can't get enough of.which is always a good sign from when he was a famous poet in his day but I say I'd think about and he'll say that always means no and walk inside with a fake pout but be able to sneak a sale seconds after.I walked on and then I saw it or should I say I saw her,I saw my first teenage love, which as about five years ago at fifteen but I never forgot about her.
Anabell was fifteen when she left to france when her dad got a job as a lawyer there,he wanted to stay at home but the pay was too good, anyone with any sence of money could figue that out but I was the only one the didn't want Anabell to go,Tom her father was one of the most loved men in town and I mean every one,he had no enemies. He was funny, caring, smart, happy and good looking and no one wanted him to leave but barly anyone thought of Anabell, execpt family, close friends, classmates and of course sercet lovers.
Four years and she was even more beautiful than when she was,she has a unquie look, unquie as the sunns rays on a rainny day,as the gentle rays reflexes the rains drops, they apper as hundreds of shining drops of pure light that seems to dissapper when they finsh there journay to the ground,it was simply breataking as it is now as it was the first time i saw her.

Answer
Great storyline and opening. But you have way to much characters and back stories for this to be a short story, if you are planning to turn this into a book-sized plot, then I could tell you it could work. Other than that fine job 3.5 out of 5.

Where can I buy a bike seat cushion?

kids bike gel seat image

Dianna F

I would like to by a bike seat cushion for my kid he is 9 years old. His bike seat is hard. By the way what are gel sattles

Answer
"By the way what are gel sattles"? SADDLES, not sattles. When you ride a horse, do you sit on a seat or a saddle? Saddle - of course. SAME thing with bicycles. It's a SADDLE not a seat.

In fact - the best bicycle saddles are made by a company that started out making horse saddles...Brooks Leather! Copy & paste...

"In 1878, the unfortunate death of Mr Brooksâ horse led to a stroke of inspiration. Unable to afford another horse, he borrowed a bicycle in order to commute to work. He found the seat so uncomfortable that he vowed to do something about it. On 28 October 1882, Mr Brooks filed his first saddle patent. Waddling cyclists everywhere rejoiced and the new product was a roaring success."
http://www.brooksengland.com/

The "best" saddles have NO padding or gel whatsoever.
http://www.brooksengland.com/catalogue-and-shop/saddles/
The only thing needing support is the "sit bones". Wide cushioned and/or gel saddles do NOT work. They push all that padding or gel AWAY from the sit bones as soon as you sit on them. Then all that padding or gel flows to areas of soft tissue & blood vessels-squeezing them off - and causing MORE pain.

Quote, "When a cyclist finds a saddle uncomfortable, the first impulse is often to look for a soft one. This is often a mistake. Just as the softest mattress is not necessarily the most comfortable to sleep on, the softest saddle is not the most comfortable to cycle on."
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/saddles.html

How do I know what size bicycle seat to buy? Is there a way to measure myself?

JustinJ

Answer
Actually, Specialized has a saddle measurement system. It is too bad more people don't know about it.

With the Specialized system, you sit (fully clothed) on a gel pad. Your pelvic bones will make indentations in the pad. You measure the width of the indentations and buy the appropriate width saddle. By using their measuring system, I found I have a very narrow pelvic structure and require a very narrow saddle. (My kids have always told me I am a tight a$$.)

Anyhow, I have one of their road saddles. It is very well designed, quite light and quite comfortable. Unfortunately, while building up a new bike, I left the saddle lying on the work bench and my son took the opportunity to abscond with it. It is now firmly affixed to his bike and he won't give it up. I will very likely buy another in the future.

In any case, even if you don't buy a Specialized saddle, you can try sitting on their gel pad at a Specialized dealer and get an idea of the width of your pelvic structure.

Hope this helps.

What do Dutch people do in their spare time?

Eric S

What is an incredibly Dutch thing to do that people in the Netherlands do that other people do not?

Answer
Most Dutch people ride bicycles. Not only in their spare time, also just to get to and from school or work. We have way more people riding bikes than any other country and still our gouvernment is trying to get more people on bikes.

This blog often mentions the amount and percentage of the Dutch riding bikes, and the age groups:
http://hembrow.blogspot.com/search?updated-min=2010-01-01T00%3A00%3A00%2B01%3A00&updated-max=2011-01-01T00%3A00%3A00%2B01%3A00&max-results=50
http://hembrow.blogspot.com/2008/08/pit-canaries.html

In fact, all ages ride bikes, from kids who are just learning to walk to people in their 90's. I would not be surpriced if someone knows an 100 year old bicyclist.

Schwinn Meridian Trike?

kids bike internal gear hub image

Loosid

Anyone have any feeling on this? Overall basic reviews are pretty solid everywhere I have looked but I'm a real bicycle novice. I am also very overweight and I would like to ride bikes with my kids plus I really miss riding bikes! Thanks in advance, here's a link to view it...
http://m.sears.com/productdetails.do?partNumber=00611132000P&sid=&psid=

Answer
I think it depends on your reasons for choosing a trike.....and on just how much "very" overweight you are & your level of fitness. That Schwinn is one of the cheaper versions of adult trikes...not horrible, though. They're all quite heavy and weigh in the 50lb range give or take, even the better quality ones, and of course they're as heavy as a tank when compared to normal 2-wheeled bikes. But, despite their weight it doesn't matter quite as much until you put steeper hills into the equation (harder pedaling and they take longer to come to a stop). I think they can be a lot of fun, and there are also a lot of good reasons for some people to choose a trike over a bike.

If you're not like super overweight and you can walk around the block n such, then this one might be ok. I'd recommend one with at least three gears, though, and of course better quality ones will be nicer overall...and a bit more expensive. If you weigh more than 225lbs or so, then you need to choose more carefully and look for the mfr's max weight rating. Some max out around that level but there are plenty that will handle 300 or as much as 500 pounds total weight. They also come in different wheel sizes and frame heights if stepping up is difficult.

Torker makes a nice multi-speed that uses an internal gearing hub instead of the cheaper and maintenance-required freewheels/derailleur....pricier but much better: http://www.torkerusa.com/bikes/utility/2012-tristar

Workman Cycles and Sun also make some good models, and this site has some others: http://www.tririder.com/

Kent bikes are sold at Target, Amazon, and a few other outlets, and they're about the same as Schwinn, maybe a touch nicer for some models, and in the same price range. If you think you'll want a nicer trike or might ride it a lot/keep it around for a long time, I'd spend a bit more if you can.

Also, if you aren't worried about keeping your balance or whatever other reasons a trike makes a good choice for some people, I can tell you that most normal hardtail mountain bikes will hold people up to about 250-275 pounds with just a part swap or two. I had a good friend who was a touch over 300 pounds who rides some expensive lightweight bikes (mountain, road, and downhill), and he's never really had any issues other than using a decent wheel and stout seatpost...he also weighs about 210 these days, thanks to riding his bike!

Get out there and be a kid with your kids. :)

Are these fixie rims good?

i dont want to waste a lot of money. just starting off.
sorry, first link doesnt work. here it is. http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/bik/2020823308.html

Answer
Alberto, my suggestion is not to waste your money on a fixed gear bike in the first place. A fixie will take all the joy out of riding.
I bought my first true 10 speed bike in 1980. People today have no appreciation on how well bicycles work today especially the gear changing components. Brakes are so much better with the introduction of dual pivot and disc brakes. Heck, a 3 speed or 7 speed internal hub equipped bike is better than a fixed gear bike. As a kid I started with a 1 speed bike with coaster brake. Always wished for more. Then I received a 3 speed. NEVER rode the single speed again. No need.
If you decide to go forward with a fixed gear bike, buy the lightest weight wheelset your budget allows. Weight is the enemy of all bicyclist. Since you will not be going fast, a light wheelset will help you get started since you will be using tall gearing.
Good Luck

Answer
Your best bet is a bicycle. No fuel aside from your own muscle power, silent, and you can go much faster than shuffling dead. Your first priority is not weapons but safe shelter, food, and ample water. Your next priority will be a weapon. Remember you must destroy the brain to kill a zombie, and you want to do so as quietly as possible. The human brain case (skull) is an amazingly tough structure and is a hard target to hit. A claw-ended crowbar is a good choice, as is a sledgehammer if you're strong enough to wield it. However, the best possible hand-to-hand weapon ever devised for up close and personal "wet work" is the trench spike... developed by the Germans during WWI to pierce the helmets of British troops in hand-to-hand trench fighting. It's the most terrible thing you can possibly hold if your hand. Just be careful to avoid getting blood/body fluid spatter in your eyes during an encounter or you'll be infected by the virus.

The perfect firearm is far from a shotgun. The best possible gun to use is the .22 caliber long rifle. Think I'm kidding? How could such a tiny bullet be so good for killing zombies, you ask? Because they're plentiful and easy to find by the hundreds. The little bullet is very fast and easily pierce the skull even at long ranges. And you can carry pocketfuls of them... literally thousands of rounds can easily be carried. Try that with 12 gauge cartridges.

Food will be a problem but you'll likely be able to go house to house and find canned goods. Heck, my mother in law has a years supply of green beans in her cabinets! STAY AWAY from stores! They'll be the first thing targeted by survivors and it will not be long before either a gang-mentality is set up or a panic. There will be piles of dead around stores, and they won't be dispatched zombies. They'll be fellow looters shot by those who managed to get the guns before they did. And definitely stay away from any Wal-Mart. Not only are the employees who work there are already zombies, but that'll be the first place the rednecks and simple-minded people will go, and it'll be even more of a murderous free-for-all than it already is.

People, you've got to think. If (when?) the zombies come, the most powerful weapon you can ever have is a strong, functional mind. Heroes will be the first to be eaten. It will be the calm, cool-headed ones that survive until the plague blows over.

Totally confused, good advice needed please?

*What if*

My husband and children all have bikes so I thought it's about time I got myself one. I want to be able to go on bike rides around the park with them and eventually use it to get to college.
I haven't been on a bike for 15yrs and I'm VERY unfit. I've been into three independant bike shops now and been given totally different info in each of them.
1, I have a sensitive back and neck after an old car accident injury so I was told... go for dual suspension only, don't go for dual as they're heavy and harder to keep pedalling momentum and only go for front suspension as dual will hurt my neck bouncing around.
2, Only buy a bike with shimano gears and levers as they're better and safer, don't but a bike with shimano stuff on it as it's much more expensive to fix and isn't any safer.
3, I'm only 5ft 2 but overweight, each shop adviced me to get a different size frame and wheels.

I've sat on the bikes but don't want to try them out in the shop as I need to learn to ride again.
Thank you for reading my lengthy explanation.

Answer
After outfitting many "new-old" riders with bicycles, I have helped many in your position. Since you numbered your questions I will respond as such... this is a looooong answer!

1) Dual suspension is not for you. You didn't mention where you were going to ride, but assuming you're going to stay on the road or groomed trails I would suggest a comfort bike, especially if your rides are going to be limited to 10 miles or less. Comfort bikes provide an upright position which has advantages and disadvantages... the upright posture does tend to be more comfortable for short rides (under 10 miles) but this same thing makes the bike fatiguing and harder to handle on longer rides.
2) Shimano is on 80% of the worlds bicycles and they are well known as reliable and precise. Another brand that is up-and-coming is SRAM. Either of these brands will serve you well and are comparable in price (for the level of bike). Neither have significant service issues unless you buy a REALLY cheap model... say, under $200.00. Never buy a bike from a department store like Target or Walmart although some chain sporting goods stores are OK (DON'T go to Sports Authority or Garts).
3) Weight has little or nothing to do with frame size, although I would definitely recommend a "mens" or "womens specific diamond" frame rather than the old fashioned ladies models.

Find a bike that you like and stand over the frame. Pull up on the handlebars until the frame touches you. There should be 3" to 5" between the ground and the front wheel.

Next, raise the saddle so that when you are sitting on it with a foot on the pedal at the bottom of the stroke that your knee is slightly bent. Place your hands on the handgrips while seated. The angle between your arm (with your elbows locked) and torso should be 75º to 85º.

Stick out your fingers- in line with your arm... the brake levers should fall directly under your fingers without having to pivot your wrists. Make sure that the shop adjusts the levers so this condition exists.

Now, to dispel some myths before I get yelled at... No, you should not be able to sit on the saddle and put your feet on the ground flatfooted. Tippytoes are more like it since you should be on the saddle only when pedalling. Other times you should be standing on the ground, straddling the top tube. No, a top tube is not dangerous... men and women have just as much to lose "down there" and there is little chance of injury with a correctly sized bike. ALWAYS wear a helmet when riding... what would your husband and kids do without you? Helmets aren't worn because you are a bad rider, but because of the idiot screaming around the corner that isn't watching for you. Everyone in the family should wear the best helmet you can buy... even the most expensive helmet is cheaper than a trip to the hospital.

Good luck!

I really want to go to Mexico but everyone keeps teling me how 'dangerous' it is. Pfft. I was also going to travel around the USA for about a month. Any suggestions on staying safe/fun things to do in the USA? I'm really looking for an adventure so stuff thats 'off the beaten track' would be awesome

Answer
San Diego is one of the nicest cities in the country. It's a major tourist destination and there are tons of things to do. There are youth hostels here where people start their trip and never leave.
http://sandiegohostels.org/

Start in San Diego and work your way up the coast.

Mission and Pacific Beach are your best bet for fun in the sun. Belmont Park has a vintage wooden roller coaster (one of two remaining seaside coasters on the west coast) as well as other rides. There is a boardwalk that runs the entire 3 mile length of both beaches. It's a great place to walk, run, rent a bike or skates.

Some must see attractions are the world famous San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and Balboa Park. Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the country. You can get a park passport which allows you entry to a dozen museums as well as the zoo.
http://www.balboapark.org/info/passport.â¦

Other attractions in the park are the Air and Space Museum, Ruben H. Fleet Science Center, the Natural History Museum, the Museum of Man, the Automotive Museum, the Hall of Champions, the Botanical Gardens, and the largest outdoor pipe organ in the world (free concerts on Sunday).

North County San Diego is home to the Zoo's Safari Park. There are multi acre enclosures where herds of wild animals roam plus lots of hiking trails. It's worth the visit and is a different experience from the zoo. You can ride a zip line, tour the park on a Segway, or take a photo caravan into the enclosures and feed the giraffes.

La Jolla offers great views, great surfing, great food, great theater, and great shopping.
Check out the surfers at historic Windansea Beach. At low tide you can walk out onto the tide pools. Walk along the Cove and check out the caves. Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art. Take a stroll on Prospect St and check out the shops, galleries, and have some authentic Mexican food at Alfonso's. Then head to the Birch Aquarium at The Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It has a spectacular view of the bluffs over the Pacific Ocean. The Tony award winning La Jolla Playhouse is located nearby on the campus of UCSD.
http://aquarium.ucsd.edu/

Take the trolley from Downtown to Old Town. There is a state park there that recreates life in the Mexican and early American periods of 1821 to 1872.

For nightlife, the Gaslamp Quarter offers dining. It's also the home of Petco Park and the San Diego Padres major league baseball team.

Check out these sites for discount coupons and other info
http://www.sandiego.org/nav/Visitors
http://thebestplacesinsandiego.com/

After San Diego, head to LA. Los Angeles has all the major tourist traps like Disneyland, Magic Mountain and Universal Studios, but try and take in some sights like the Getty Center. It has one of the largest art collections in the world and because of it's large endowment, it's free to visit. The campus is covered in 1.5 million sq ft of travertine stone with the fossils still visible.

Head up to the Central Coast on US 101 past Santa Barbara. Go to San Simeon and spend the night. The next morning, tour Hearst Castle. After lunch, continue up the coast on CA 1 to Big Sur and the Monterey Pennisula. Stay the night and the next day visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium then ride along 17 mile drive in Carmel. From there, head to SF.
http://www.hearstcastle.org/
http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/

When in California be sure to visit Yosemite. It's is one of the most unique places on earth. It's one of those places you must see before you die.
After a few days in SF, go to Yosemite. Cross the park via CA Route 120 to US 395 and head back to LA. CA 120 takes you to the east entrance to Lee Vining near Mono Lake. The lake is in a caldera of an extinct volcano. CA 120 crosses Tioga Pass, the highest vehicle pass in CA. You climb thousands of feet on a mountain road and reach the Alpine meadows of Yosemite. Very scenic.
http://www.nps.gov/yose/

If you want stunning vistas, Yosemite is the place. Glacier Point is breathtaking.
http://www.yosemitefun.com/glacier_point.htm

If you want to see big trees, there are groves of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite (they are the largest trees on earth, bigger then the redwoods)
http://jrabold.net/yosemite/intro4seq.htm

BTW Mexico is very dangerous. Mass executions daily. It's a lawless corrupt country. If the criminals don't rob you the police will. Kidnapping is a major industry. I know Mexicans who live in San Diego who now refuse to cross the border anymore. U.S. State Department has warned visitors to stay away.

My son has a diamondback coil 24 and he needs a new fork we don't know what size to get and a good site?

first-or-l

youth diamondback coil 24 it needs to have a shock on it. we also want a site to buy it from we prefer it to be a good brand.

Answer
Check http://diamondback.com for the exact specs and purchase according to your needs.

It is NOT easy to install a new fork correctly so I would strongly encourage you to seek the help of a professional.

EDIT: The SR M2200 shock on that bike is a 63mm travel, but you MIGHT be able to get away with an 80mm travel. That is a VERY inexpensive fork that deserves an upgrade, but note that any fork you put on the bike, if it is ridden hard, will eventually fail. This is a case of an all terrain bike (intended for on road and riding unpaved trails) being mistaken for a mountain bike (off road riding).

How did girls dress up in the 1980s?

Haruka Nan

It's Decade Day at school tomorrow and I'm planning on doing the 1980s since the 1990s seem pretty recentish. So I'm wondering how exactly did girls dress up in the '80s? I'm kinda going for the preppy look with the side-ponytail and yeah. I can't go out to the store to buy stuff (it'd be pointless anyway) so is there also a way to look like an '80s girl without going out to buy the necessary... items?

vintage huffy bicycle?

kids yamaha bicycle
on Yamaha Dirt Bikes Parts spares and bits for your yamma offroader ...
kids yamaha bicycle image
Q. I'm posting this in several categories, trying to get an ans.........I'm pretty sure it was a huffy, but I could be wrong. It had a single shock on the back (very similar to the vintage yamaha yz's) this was in the mid-late 70's. Do you know what it was?

Answer
Odds are best that it IS a HUFFY.

1st Monoshock Bicycles were 20" Downhill Racers made by Gary Littlejohn in early 1970,,late 69 actually.

(Interesting to note that Pre-dates Yamaha's monoshock Motorcycles by a few years....Gary was a California /Movie Stuntman,,,& had a bike building biz)

They got real popular,real suddenly.
Then fizzled out for a while in favor of HardTailed bikes for flatter track racing.

Most of the Custom/"Boutique" Bikes were fairly scarce and the bulk of them were sorta regionally clustered in California.

BMX racing (bicycle motocross) had just began to get popular in early~to~mid '70's.
At that time,,,the Monoshock "came & went" so quickly they did not become any sorta Standard or Universal Style.

Takara from Japan made some in Mid 70's.
They sold them under their own name and under various "American" brands.

...........................
HUFFYS were probably the most common/popular of the Monoshock Bikes.
They started in '74~75 if I'm not mistaken---I'm no Bike Expert.
Big Name,Mass Marketing,Extensive National distribution network....and Low Priced compared to the "boutique" custom names.

Even so,,they were fairly scarce...
Huffy had a buncha nice 20" bikes in their line-up at the stores which were nearly 1/2 the price of a Monoshock
$20~30 Difference in List Price of $40~50 starting price range was a not only a Big Jump in comparative prices--
It was a Bunch of Money at that time!
( * That was the days of $.50/gal Gasoline
$7,500 New Lincolns & Corvettes
Minimum wage was about $1.65~1.85 or so )

A $80 Kid's bike was way more than a Week's take home pay for a LOT of parents in Mid '70's.
And it was more than most kid's could earn with a Summer Job.
It was a Retail Price Point at the bottom of the High-Dollar Custom Bike range.
Just at the edge of "Price-is-no-object" Crowd,,,most folks who could comfortably afford That Huffy could afford about Any bike available at the time.
$200~300++ Bicycles---which was "small motorcycle prices" back then.
Just my personal opinion,,,but I 'bleive that's why the Monoshock's weren't more Commonly seen.
They were kinda Expensive.

Anyway---
The most distinguishing Feature of a Huffy that nobody else had was a HUGE "HeadStock Gussest".
At the Front of the Frame where the forks attatch,,
They welded a a BIG Plate from TopTube/Backbone to Front DownTube and to Steering Head Tube.

It was about as wide as your hand,,4"~5".
No Bicycles had Headstock Gussets until BMX sport came along.
Then only gradually did Bike Makers begin adding that reinforcement,,,but were usually SMALL,well fitted plates.

The HUFFY's Shock Absorber attatched to a hole drilled in that huge gusset plate.
And they were Adjustable,,,it had several holes to mount the shock.

Also the Top Frame Tube was Arched to clear the Shock,,,which is what allowed the Adjustment of the shock by "raising" it to a Higher Hole in the mount plate for different suspension leverage.

HUFFY's Huge Headstock Gusset Plate is EASILY the most distinguishing feature.
Nobody else had anything even close to that "Design" or the sheer SIZE.
It must span near 1/4 the lenngth of the entire top tube.

If it's a TAKARA-type,,,
Their Top Tube was STRAIGHT,,,and the Shock Mount was just a narrow ,straight "strap" about 1" wide that went from Top Tube down to front Down Tube.
Takaras also had NO actual headstock gusseting.
The Top and Bottom frame tubes just Butted the headstock in traditional Bicycle style.

Beyond Huffy and Takara,,,almost everybody else attacthes their shock Directly to Top Tube via a small mount welded onto the tube.
And everything else Monoshock that I know of was "Custom" bikes/frames from the Boutique Builders.

Huffy owned old Royce Union Brands in Later Years,,but I'm not certain of their position in the 70's.
They sold Bikes also under Western Auto Brand in Mid 70's,,,but I do not know if there was a "Western Flyer Monoshock" model???

> Mid 70's Huffy was #1 Seller in USA,,and Made in USA.
>Mid/Late 80's,,,"Huffys" won some Olympic Medals.
>Late 90's they closed US Mfg'n and moved it all to China.
>Early 2000's Filed Bankruptcy ,,,got their stock delisted from NYSE
>2004~5,,US Govmnt bailed out Huffy's pension plan

**************************************************************
I'm no Huffy or Bicycle expert.

I happened to be at Yamaha when they introduced their BMX bicycle.
Before Long,,,kids were destroying the frames routinely.
And we were doing Repairs and mods which was "Identical" to HUFFY's set-up on the Frame/Headstock reinforcement.

Yamaha's Monoshock Motorcycles had just appeared recently,,,,,
& their BMX Bicycles "had issues" with frame failure,
so the Huffy Bike immediately caught my attention.
Being Both Monoshock,,AND with "Factory Reinforced" Frames that Yamaha had us Motorcycle guys doing on a "custom" basis.

Yamaha SHOULD HAVE been what HUFFY was.
Or, they shoulda sub-contracted w/ Littlejohn to use their frames & sold as Premium Race BMX under Yamaha name.

I dont think anybody fully realized at the time how Hard bicycles would be ridden.

That's all I know about 'em.
If it's got a Big Wide Reinforcement Plate on front of Frame--It's a HUFFY.
They appeared in '74~75,,not Certain??
And I have no idea how long they were continued,,,I'd guess 77~78??..not too long a time.
I say that only cause "original shock bike craze" 1st had a False Start back then,,it lasted a couple years then everybody wanted hardtails again.
Monoshocks didn't become really established till a few years after that.
That's kinda weird to me,,oh well:)

Or if it's just a narrow strip spanning the frame tubes to mount the shock to,,it's a TAKARA

VALUE??
I can't even guess.
If it's in "perfect,mint condition"(which would be a Miracle),,
then it's one of those things where Value depends on Buyer's Desires.
Maybe $200??,,Maybe more?,,Maybe not Half that?

Complete and in decent condition,,,I'd GUESS maybe up to a $100 area?

Avg condition(which would be pretty Rough by now)/Modified/Repainted,,,maybe $50~75?

Frankly,,I should NOT even speculate on Value,,,thats WAY outa my realm.

But I can tell you this,,,
If you happen to have a particularly Nice example,,,DO seek out somebody who Specializes in Old/Vintage/Interesting Bikes and get a "Professional Opinion" of it's value.

As a "Rider",,it'd be worth same as any other 20" bike.
As a Nostalgic Collectible,,,,it POSSIBLY could be worth quite a bit to a few certain buyers who WANT a nice example

IF it's in really decent shape,,I'd suggest not selling without getting a solid Valuation estimate from a Pro.

Sounds GOOFY,,but there ARE Bicycle Sharks & Scalpers out there,,looking for Older Bikes from unsuspecting Sellers at Garage Sales,Resale shops,,etc.
They have channels to re-sell Desirable bikes at a good profit.
Often,,they have a List of waiting buyers for certain bikes.

Ya just Never Know,,,
and in my Opinion those Huffys DO have several aspects both Technical And Nostalgic which are common to "Collectible " classed items.

Again,,I am NO AUTHORITY/EXPERT or even very knowledgable on the subject.
CHECK with a PRO on Value,,if you're interested to know.

I'd just hate to see you "raise your garage sale price" from $10 up to $20,,,and then find out you 'd MAYBE sold a $100~200 bike that some cult/fan following is searching for.

(Doing THAT sorta Thing,,,I am TOO experienced at,,lol)

Hope any of that helps,,
Good Luck

Yamaha 85 2 stroke for beginner?

TexasGirl5

I have never had a dirt bike before and I am looking for one that will not have too much power for a beginner. I was originally looking for a 150 4 stroke but the smallest 2010 bike I can find that is a 4 stroke is a 250. I would rather have a 4 stroke. I am only 5' 2" and I need one that I can touch the ground on. My boyfriend has a 125 2 stroke and it is too big for me.

Answer
It is possible to go slow on a YZ 85. I learned on a KX 60 and had no problems at all. Kids learn every day on racing 80s and manage to do just fine. If you can ride a bicycle and have good hand/eye coordination you should be fine. Just don't let it intimidate you and keep a level head. You can always loosen the throttle cable to the point where you can't give it full throttle if you think that you need to tame the bike down.

What are some activities you do when babysitting?

Zoey

I babysit alot the activities can be for any age of children. I'm just looking for a really long list of activities that are kind of time consuming and a lot of fun, for both me and the kids thanks!

Answer
-Make play dough! http://www.busybeekidscrafts.com/Salt-Dough-Recipe.html
You can even take a small food storage container (of yours) to have the kids decorate with stickers, etc. that will hold their play dough it.

-Decorate a pillow case/T-shirt/etc..
Bring your accessory that you are going to color on. Take some permanent markers for them to use, but make sure they don't write on anything else- include themselves.

-Go outside!
Play with chalk.
Blow bubbles. (you can even make them)
Take a walk/bike ride
Visit a park
Have a picnic
Bring some water guns
Do a scavenger hunt: Have them find a pink flower, a blue car, etc.

-Have a dance party!
Put some songs like: The Macerana, the twist, chicken dance, hokey pokey, electric slide, etc. on a CD or a playlist on your ipod. Turn off the lights, expect for some dimmed ones or a lamp. Try to get a diso ball. (glow sticks if the kids are above the age of 7) Freeze dance for the little ones!

-Play games!
Hide and seek
Twister
Go fish
Slap Jack
Candy Land
Bowling (use soup cans as pins, and a ball)

-For girls: Do a pedicure!
Take a large bowl, if you have one and put a towel under it. Fill it up with warm water and bubbles/soap. Let her sit on the coach with her feet in the bowl. Massage her feet, then paint her toes.

-Frost cookies!
Make the cookies at your house and take them with to avoid using their stove! Bring along some frosting and sprinkles. Have them decorate their own. Rice krispies also work but are quite messy!

-ColoIring
You can take big poster boards and stamps, stickers, markers... Or you can print off coloring sheets, and have them make their own coloring book. Drawing contests for older kids are always fun!

-Build a "tent!"
Very fun in my opinion. Put chairs in a circle, and lay a big blanket on top! Crawl in and enjoy.
I love going "camping" with this idea. Set up the tent, roast marshmallows in the microwave, do a scavenger hunt, etc.

- Balloon games..
This is only good for kids older than about 5... The little ones can choke on broken balloon pieces. Play "keep it in the air" or do the game with the balloon tied to your ankle. Make sure to clean up!

-Limbo...

-Movie "theater"
Bring 4-5 movies for them to pick from, make tickets, have a concession stand.
A fun idea with this topic is if you can bring some large cardboard boxes to make fake cars out of and have a pretend drive in movie.

Just be creative!!

What are some Valentines day Pranks I can play on my boyfriend?

Christina

My boyfriend of two years and I have challenged eachother to pranks for Valentines, and I have NO Idea what to do! People are getting really excited to see what we come up with, and I've got nothing! Help!

Answer
If you can get into his apartment or bedroom when he's not there, you could plaster every surface with pictures of you (weird pics are better) with "I Wuv U" or some other silly message scrawled on every picture. Spend a few bucks at your local photocopy store to mass-produce your weird photos in the hundreds.
_____________________________________

The "stuff his car with inflated balloons" prank I hear all the time is old. But here's a variation on that. Cover his car (or bike, or refrigerator) with hearts! But you don't want to damage the surface of his car/bike/whatever. So you use magnets! I couldn't find heart-shaped magnets in bulk, but you could order a pack of 72 one-inch rectangular magnets for $3.99: http://www.orientaltrading.com/ui/browse/processRequest.do?demandPrefix=11&productId=IN-48/2573&mode=Unknown&requestURI=processProductsCatalog&xsaleSku=57/9500&sku=48/2573&cm_sp=Cross%20Sell-_-Product%20Detail-_-Product%20Detail

Glue a heart to every magnet. Stick them all over his car, and voila! He has a car that is dotted with hearts! Or you could glue *anything* on those magnets. Suddenly his car is dotted with 72 Elmo heads! Or 72 cookies (stickers OR real cookies!) Find something round that looks like big dots, and glue it on those magnets to "polka-dot his car".

Even sillier: buy the 12-foot lengths of magnetic strips. Glue stuff to the strips before applying them to his car. Even better, if you have craft skills, see if you can find some fake fur at the fabric store, and buy 2 yards of it. Cut the fur into one-inch wide strips that are six feet long. Attach two 6-foot fur strips to each 12-foot long magnetic strip. Glue or hot glue might not work, but with a needle and thread you could loop the thread through the fur and around the magnetic strip about every 10 inches so it stays on. The finished product is several 12-foot-long magnetic FURRY STRIPES that you use to decorate his car! I vote for hot pink fur! Here are the magnetic strips I'm talking about:
http://www.orientaltrading.com/ui/browse/processRequest.do?demandPrefix=11&productId=IN-57/1500&mode=Unknown&requestURI=processProductsCatalog&xsaleSku=57/9500&sku=57/1500&cm_sp=Cross%20Sell-_-Product%20Detail-_-Product%20Detail

Perhaps you could apply glue to one side of the magnetic strip, and cover it completely with pink glitter. Then you'll have pink glitter stripes to add to his car! It will be a super-girly car.

Instead of waiting for the magnets or magnetic strips to be shipped to you, I bet you could find some in your local crafts store. Magnetic sheets are fun to play with, too. You can take a 8" by 11" or larger magnetic sheet, and paint or glue the sign for a fake business on it. Attach it to his car, and voila! he's driving the company car of some weird business. Be sure to include his name in the business slogan:

Mike's Balloon Excursions for Kids. "Every child should have the Balloon Boy experience!" (include picture of balloon boy's silver balloon)
Jason's Taxidermy Service "We really know our stuff."
Steve's Drilling Service "Your Hole Is Our Goal"

That last one is from here: http://www.holyducttape.com/gallery/holevan.jpg

Here are more business signs--make up your own version for the magnetic sheet:

This next pair of pranks requires your best geek skills, or assistance from a geek. And it works only if you have access to your boyfriend's computer.

Easy computer prank: set up a ridiculous screensaver image. It can be a weird animation or picture, or, it could be the kind or screen that looks like your computer's hard drive has failed (but don't give him a heart attack!)

Hard computer prank: takes a bit of skilled effort in advance: go to Tucows.com and download a font editor utility. Edit a font so that the letter "i" is dotted with a heart. Do all this on your computer, and save the font file on a flash drive. Sneak into his computer, download the font from the flash drive into the system's font collection, and make it his default font for the internet. I did this to someone before--it's very subtle. They really crack up when they suddenly notice that every "i" is dotted with a heart.
_____________________________________

Mean pranks, of the "hope he doesn't have a heart attack" variety:
Besides making it look like his computer just died, there's the old "leave the used pregnancy test on the bathroom sink." A variation on that works if you already had a child with your boyfriend/husband: print out the following web page, and leave it on your desk or somewhere that he'll notice it: http://www.dnatesting.com/
Some guys, like my little brother, actually enjoy mean pranks that don't hurt anyone, but that are kinda scary.
_____________________________________

I also like the human heart idea suggested by "Justice"--guys who like horror flicks might actually love it. And since many guys think valentine's day is an annoyance, they might like the irreverence of the "here's my bloody heart" message. Could you get a cow's heart from the local butcher? Er, that might be too gross for you to deal with.

How to work out on your period?

children quad bike games image

Nellie

When I have my period, the cramps make me not want to work out my core and the fact that there's a pad between my thighs makes me not want to move my lower body at all. I've been working out my upper body when I have my period but there's only so many dumbbell exercises you can do and it gets boring. I heard that during your period, hormonal changes can boost your tolerance and muscle recovery, so I want to take advantage of those changes to make the most of my workouts and work out my entire body. Any tips?

Answer
Your menstrual cycle may be a drag on your mood, but it doesn't have to slow down your workout schedule. For some athletes bleeding is such a burden that they take birth control pills like Seasonique to limit their periods so they don't have to mix training sessions with PMS. But do you really have to change up your menstrual cycle in the name of a good workout? And can exercising when you're bleeding pose more serious risks than simple inconvenience? We scoured the medical journals and talked to top researchers to get the scientific low-down on how your menstrual cycle does (and doesn't) affect your workout.

Top athletes don't let a little bleeding slow them down, and you don't have to either. Turkish researchers surveyed 241 elite athletes about how their menstrual cycle affected their performance. While nearly three out of four women said they felt worse just before menstruation, 63 percent said that their pain decreased during training and competition and 62.2 percent said that they believed their performance was just as good when they had their period as other times of the month. A West Virginia University study found that female runners performed equally well whether tested during the first half or second half of their menstrual cycles. The one caveat may be for women with severe premenstrual and menstrual symptoms, such as serious cramps and heavy bleeding. In one French study women who reported these symptoms performed more poorly on a broad-jump exercise during their period compared to their later in their cycle.

Your Menstrual Cycle: Your period might increase your chance of injury.
Women are two to 10 times more likely to get ACL injuries than men, and studies have found clusters of these knee injuries at the startâand just beforeâmenstruation. Why? When Australian researchers looked at the muscle mechanics of women running on a treadmill, they found differences in the way their knees moved during menstruation compared to ovulation. The researchers chalked this up to poorer motor control during menstruationâanything from letting your knee collapse inward when you land to letting your quads do all the work instead of involving the hamstrings and glutes, says Timothy E. Hewett, Ph.D., director of the Sports Medicine Biodynamics Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Research Foundation. "The bad news is that there may be an association between a woman's menstrual cycle and her risk of ACL injury," says Hewett, who has been studying the effect of the menstrual cycle on injury for 15 years. "The good news is while we can't change a woman's anatomy or do a lot about her hormones, we do know that we can alter her neuromuscular control and decrease her injury risk by half." In several studies, Hewett and his colleagues showed that when they gave athletes additional neuromuscular training, teaching them how to reduce the load on their knees and ankles and building up strength and coordination in both sides of the body, they dropped their rates of ACL injury, ankle injury and knee cap pain by 50 to 60 percent. He recommends adding single-leg balance work, plyometric jump work (focusing on form rather than quantity), and hamstring and glute strengthening to your workouts twice a week for 15 to 20 minutes.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends regular aerobic exercise to help relieve PMS. You probably don't need a scientist to convince you of that! Set foot in the gym when you're PMSing and you'll boost your mood, ward off fatigue and facilitate a better night of zzz's. "I feel best any day of the month if I get going in the morning with a workout," says Anne Kveta Haack, 36, of New York City, who rotates between swimming, running, biking, yoga and light weights regardless of her cycle status.

Most of you are game to hit the gym no matter what time of the month it is. One 2010 study found that women's workout schedules did not change over the course of their menstrual cycle, whether they took birth control pills or not.

Hope this helped!!!!

am i a gamer girl? if not, would you settle for me? (you being a guy who only wants to date gamers)?

Outlandish

so, i like this guy, im almost certain hes interested in me but neither of us know each other very well, but i do however think that hes looking for a gamer girl.

situation:
i see him all alone at the computer games lab at uni at 10am in the holidays (hes studying games design) but i had to go, so i asked him later online why he was there.

he says: Having an all night lan. Lol that sounds so nerdy.

i say: haha seriously? all by yourself?

him: lol no with male_friend_1 and male_friend_2. This is probably why I'm single haha.

me: nah. lan parties are win.

him: Lol are you a gamer girl?

i said not really,
but guys what would you do, i mean if you wanted a gamer girl, would you settle for me?

this next part describes my relationship with games:
during primary school my parents let my play spyro on ps1 as a child. i loved all those games, i'd get up at like 3am so i could play them for like 8 hours straight, (after my rents woke up they always told me to get off after 1 hour, they didnt want me playing video games). I did the same for heaps of little flash games when we finally bought a computer. then i found a tarzan computer game that i also got obsessed with. then they bought me a ps2 and yea. i always played computer games but things like harry potter, atlantis, alladin, shark tale, finding nemo, etc (actually now i come to think of it, most of them were based off of movies), and a couple car racing games, and bmx/quad bike/bike games etc. so they were kind of gay games. when i was 14 i wanted to buy final fantasy but my parents wouldnt let me. when i was 14 i also played halo for the first time. needless to say, i was crap. my friend who was a real gamer girl at that time kept running me over, repeatedly, straight after i respawned.
when i was 16 i played urban terror a couple times, but i was so crap at that and my computer couldnt handle it, by this point i was obsessed with many flash games including N. By this point i'd also found a simulator and felt like i could finally live the childhood id always wanted (by playing mario kart, mario world, zelda, banjo kazooie, etc on computer) i also downloaded rapellz to see if id like that but computer couldnt handle it. when i was 17 i got some money and bought a whole heap of games on steam. most of them were gay cheap ones, (like the star wars ones, but i wanted them just to practise), thats when i bought bioshock but turns out its too freaky for me lol good thing i didnt buy left 4 dead. i liked avatar despite the bad reviews but once again computer is fail and couldnt quite handle it. I also really really liked prince of persia and my computer could handle it (so i fully completed that one). then i went away for a year and couldnt play anything. came back, now i have a foster brother who is a gamer. he owns an xbox and some games, he let me play assasins creed and i really liked that one, i even totally completed it. He also plays COD alot so whenever he was playing zombies or live he always let me play too. i was terrible. nearly always the worst on the team but by the end of it i was beginning to get kill streaks against level 40-50 people and schtuffle. but hes currently banned from xbox so now i havent been able to play anything for several months.
so i dont play much now and i dont own many games except for some dodge ones online i never play
would you call me a gamer? try-hard gamer? casual gamer? or just someone not completely opposed to gaming? or what.

REAL QUESTION. GUYS IF YOU ONLY WANT TO DATE GAMER GIRLS, WOULD YOU SETTLE FOR ME?
if you must know, bmi 20.1 5'9. i do excersise everyday thank you very much and apparently im a pretty blonde, so ive been told.

Answer
I'm sure the Gamer aspects isn't the only thing that will be important if you want to get together; yes it would be an initial conversation/similar interests thing but you need to have an attraction or spark and get on despite the gaming. Maybe just get talking to him more and see how it goes, see whether you get on etc.

ps don't be so worried about the 'casual gamer' 'hardcore gamer' thing, just enjoy playing them, who cares lol.

Good luck :)

routines?

And furthermore, people who do just as everyone else with their lives.
Get married, have children at an early age, buy a house in suburbia, go to work each day, take their kids to school.

I couldn't stand it. I think it's disgusting that so many people have bought into that normal, average lifestyle.
Don't people like spontaneous lifestyles, or even adventure?
I mean, I suppose vacations still fit into that description.
It's just all been done before.
And it's so.. boring.
Family 'get-togethers', birthday parties, car-pooling.
I don't know, those sorts of things make me so uncomfortable.
I would want every. single. day. to be a different day.
Nothing repeated.

Or I'd vomit.
What do you think?
How would you want your future to be lived?

Would you want to settle down early?
A life like your parents?

What?

And believe me, I am speaking in a general sense, I know each family has it's own flaws, and each person's day doesn't consist of exactly the SAME thing, but I think you'll all understand what I meant.
You guys, I'm only 15.
I just think about the future a lot.

O.O

Answer
One of my favourite days was: driving home from work (landscaping) with my two friends who also worked there. We stopped for groceries so when we get to Ty's place I'm kindof chilling in the car eating blueberries and they stick around too. So we shoot the breeze eating blueberries, very stretched out and relaxed for 40 mins. Ty is very routine oriented and he thought it was hilarious.

That's kind of my style, on good days. I think I'll save up for a few
years. I'll get a motorbike and a decked out custom trailer with a bit of a library and a grill to haul camping gear and bike around possibly sleeping at the side of the road, hiking a lot, and visiting people. Hiking actually bores me, it's one of the things that makes me feel like I'm running in a hampster wheel but it'll be different when I'm heading out for weeks at a time. So I hope. I have a feeling I'll go over a lot of north america, maybe end up in NYC for a while. That's what I see happening for me.

Can someone tell me about the characteristics of Shepherds?

Q. My family has been looking for another dog and we already have a golden. We were interested in the German Shepherds. We would like to know if they are good pets and if they're good with children/other dogs. The kids are 13 and 9.

Answer
German Shepherds are great dogs in the right hands. This is not a breed for everyone. Care should be taken in choosing a breeder because some can have serious health, nerve and temperament problems. Early socialization is a must to develop a stable, confident temperament, they are easily trained, aloof by nature and can be very territorial.

If you simply want a pet for your family, and don't have the time or inclination to take your dog running or hiking or biking or swimming, or to get involved in agility (obstacle course), or advanced obedience, or schutzhund (protection), or herding, or tracking, or a similar canine activity, I do not recommend this breed.

A German Shepherd may be right for you if you want a dog that is:

Is strong, athletic, and natural-looking
Thrives on challenging activities and exercise
Looks stern and imposing, so makes an effective deterrent
Is exceptionally versatile -- when well-trained, can learn and do almost anything

A German Shepherd may not be right for you if you do not want to deal with:

An extremely careful search to avoid all the bad-tempered and unhealthy German Shepherds
Vigorous exercise requirements
Rowdiness and exuberant jumping, especially when young
Destructiveness when bored or not exercised enough
Aggression or shyness toward people in some lines, or when not socialized enough
Aggression toward other animals
Chasing and nipping at things that move: children, joggers, other animals, bikes, cars
Constant heavy shedding
Legal liabilities (public perception, future breed bans, insurance problems, increased chance of lawsuits)
A multitude of serious health problems

What are some fun activities you do with your toddlers or preschoolers?

I'm looking for some new activities for my 2.5 year old. We have made clay and bubble mix and have done the whole spray bottle paint on a white sheet deal and made hand print butterflies and elephants..... what are some fun interacive crafts or activities you do with your kids?

Answer
Nature hunt. Find acorns, different shaped leaves, pine cones, flowers, etc. Count the different kinds of wildlife you see.

Parade. Make instruments and get dressed up and parade down the sidewalk. Even better if you can get some neighbors to come out and cheer and other kids to participate by decorating wagons and bikes and big wheels.

Homemade salt playdough.

Freeze water in 9x13 pans. Before the water goes in drop some food coloring in and see what happens when it freezes. We did this a lot this winter.

Make obstacle courses to run through - you run them too! Things to climb over, under, around and through.

Find out what free/cheap concerts are available. Many high schools and colleges have band, dance, orchestra concerts that are open to the public. Groups like military bands often play in parks for free.

Picnic. Pack up easy lunches and a blanket and go have lunch out at a park or even in the back yard.

Find your local children's museum. Even better if it's rinkydink and hands on. 2.5 year olds don't need to have the fancy stuff, but I know my son loved petting turtles and using the thousands of blocks (he didn't have nearly as much at home), playing dress up, playing make believe, and creating art projects.

Cook together. Little kids can add ingredients, stir, put fork prints in cookies.

Help around the house. Seriously? My son used to (and still does) love helping me around the house. From putting wet clothes into the dryer to digging in the garden to being "tool boy" when I was fixing the car...it was great fun for him.

Why do my kids seem not to be able to creatively play outside and find things to do on their own?

When I was younger I used to entertain myself with bottle caps and empty soda cans. I made crafts and did fun things with what I had. I played with sticks and bugs and rocks, etc.
My kids are constantly asking me to buy them toys to keep them busy. I say no most of them time. They have a pool, and bikes and friends in the neighborhood. they also have toys they could bring outside.
Why does it seem with this generation kids need things that parents 'have' to buy for them to keep them happy? Times have changed for sure..my question how to bring back the old ways of making my kids find things to do?? And for a short time until they get sick of them.
And also the neighbors kids come over and break, steal or lose the things my kids have..it's a waste of money for me.
I am outside with them and do play hide and seek and try but they end up wanting toys. It's annoying after a while ..
Yes they do read books. Their 9 and 7 years old, and are incouraged to read books by the school. I try to help them pick out books that are fast paced and fun to read. I read to them and help them with hard words.
We paint outside and they draw with chalk on the driveway!
The point is they have a playroom of toys. They are allowed to bring them outside. Of course they end up lost and broken. At the end of the day, we clean up and bring things back in the house.

Answer
I know EXACTLY what you mean!!! I'm only 23 but I still remember the golden years of imaginative play... WITHOUT the use of aids (toys). My son is still 2, so he LOVES to go outside and mess with nature and just run around. But is is so hard to get my nephew and cousins to do the same.

If you really feel that you money is being wasted, you can hold a toy sale or donate some of the unbroken toys to the Salvation Army or Goodwill. As for the play time... are there any parks, beaches, wooded areas near your city or town? Sometimes it helps to take the kids to a "different" location than they are used to in order for their creative juices to get flowing. Everytime we take my nephew to the beach or park, he forgets about toys and tv (my sister will let him watch it for 12 hours straight!!! yuck!!!) that by the end of the day, he's too tired for anything else and just goes to bed after his dinner. If these places are not near you, try to be creative yourself and bring a fun place to them.

For example, you mention they have a pool, but wouldn't it be just as fun to "water the lawn" by having a sprinkler or water hose picnic? Put some refreshments and bite size snacks ona table and let the water games begin!!! You should put on your bikini or cut-offs and join the fun, that way they don't feel like their being forced to have fun. It's more appealing if you're in there getting wet too. Also, if you (or your husband) don't mind, stake out a small area, maybe in a corner or inconspicuous spot, where y'all can bring out plain ol' pots and pans and make mud pies!!! Then you can each take turns hosing each other off before getting back in. With global warmign ans water waste issues, you can sneak in more healthy snacking and mud slinging before washing off or water play.

If you go to the beach, make it more physical by just bringing essentials: drinking water, snacks, towels, sunglasses, and sunscreen, and maybe a camera to capture the fun!!! If you bring toys, they end up doing most of the work... pretend you are back in time people and only have your hands or feet to dig and have fun!!! If you MUST bring toys, limit it to a pail and shovel per person... this way they can use them for digging and shoving, but they have to use their hands and imaginatin to mold figures or castles!!!

Another idea: fill some small backpacks with water and snacks and take a hike at a park or small wooded area. Just be aware of any pest alerts in your area (mosquito and tick spray... it varies by state). Once that gets played out, you can explore your own surroundings by taking "people in your neighborhood" walks. We LOVED those!!! It was a good way for us to admire what others do with their lawns and porches... and sometimes some of the neighbors would introduce themselves whils they tended to their gardens. On our way home we'd buy dime candies, but if again, you are trying to keep it free, bring along some home made treats and water in small backpacks. OR, you can host your own plushie parade by pulling your mascots on a wagon and showing them off to passers by (a good way to air out musty toys!!!)... or your dog can come along (if you have one, of course). Do your kids have bikes? You can also do a variation of this activity if your parks have bike routes... or even a stroll around the neighborhood. A good way to teach and learn proper biking safety!!!

Or... you can have a nature fashion show. All you need are some needles and thread. You can thread flowers, leaves, tree berries, etc. and then model your necklaces or crowns in your "driveway" runway.

Y'all can make an inexpensive bird or squirrel feeder, there are some critter friendly recipes online with seeds and honeys for ingredients. So much fun to make and design!!! And afterwards you'll be able to spot your little visitors throughout the seasons come and go. If you get cold winters, you can even freeze some berries and seeds in an aluminum pot or pan; let it thaw a tiny bit to unstick it, use an ice pick to poke a hole and use sturdy twine to attach in to a strong tree branch. As it melts, winter critters can enjoy the icy fruit, nut, or seed treats!!!

You can also have a late night dinner on weekends in your backyard. Take a large blanket or picnic sheet and place it in the middle. Use plastic plates, or serving trays so they wont' spill or break outdoors. Enjoy the outdoors, and as it gets darker, listen to the chirping crickets or look for fireflies... and watch the sunset as you enjoy some family time!!!

If you ever decide to go for take out fast food, park your family car out in the driveway (sunsets are cooler, so you can have the doors open or windows down) and pretend you are at a drive in... except instead of a movie, y'all can talk about your daily lives or family stuff, you know. It's so fun!!! We used to do this with my Mom and it always turned into, "Sheesh, this car is a mess... we should clean and wash it!!!"... and we would and it kept us outside and active!!!

Wow, your question sure brought back memories!!! I hope some of my ideas inspire your kids to do more outdoorsy or imaginative things without toys. AND many of these should be so obviously fun, that even the neighboors will join in the fun (and maybe get them to quit breaking and stealing from your kid's toy box!!!). Good Luck and have fun!!!

Does anyone have any advice about moving to Whistler?

T. T

I am a single mother of 3 young children and find myself wanting to move back out west. I currently live in Ontario and have for the last 7 years. A friend of mine suggested that I try Whistler. After a lot of research online, I find that I still can't come to a decision. Just so you can better understand, I will say that I do not ski, nor am I a mountian biker. I do however want to raise my children in a place filled with these types of activities.
If anyone could give me any kind of advice on this idea of mine I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
T.T.

Answer
If you have a career or profession where you make $100,000 plus a year, and/or other income as well, then you might be able to afford to live in Whistler, if you have a good size down payment for a home there. Housing is scarce, especially rentals. You will be best off if you can buy, but it is very very expensive.

If that level of income is not you, then I would recommend trying out Squamish, which is halfway between whistler and Vancouver, or Vancouver itself.

Consider Vancouver area ... there are three mountains within 20 minutes of downtown that offer skiing, snowboarding and such in the winter, and mountain biking and hiking in the summer. You can find semi-reasonable rentals in Burnaby, and East Vancouver (the area just west of Burnaby around the PNE). You don't want East Vancouver between Nanaimo and Main, just FYI).

IMO, your kids would actually have more opportunities in the Vancouver area, and life will be more affordable.

Mike

So yeah, I'm some 17 year old kid and for some reason my trainer has me fighting people twice my size and age. I am was usually smiling, which is pretty weird when you consider I have that nasty trainer breathing down his neck all the time, chasing me with bicycles, and pretty much riding my coattails.

What do I do?

Answer
It sounds like you are bragging, this isn't even a question.
