Recommend a family vacation?

Q. What we're hoping to find:
- luxury accommodations
- no need for "kiddie camp" because we'll have a babysitter with us (plus, we like to do things as a family)
- our kids (7 and 8) love swimming, arts and crafts, bike riding, and animals
- we like fine dining and the great outdoors (cycling, hiking, fishing, etc.)

** willing to go anywhere in the US, Caribbean, or Canada. Travel dates very flexible. No cruises, please!
We have a few ideas, but nothing we're too excited about. We'd love to hear any suggestions. thx

Answer
Canada: Banff, Alberta. It is beautiful up there, and there is plenty to see and do. There is the Banff National Park. There is the rockies, Lake Louise, the icefields
Victoria, BC. It is beautiful there as well. There is Buchart Gardens, whale watching, and plenty more.

US- California- there is a lot to do- San Diego there is the Zoo, Lego Land, etc. Los Angeles- Hollywood, beaches, Disney Land. San Francisco. Napa Valley.

Sun Valley, Idaho- if you like skiing. We go there yearly.

Las Vegas/Grand Canyon- There is stuff for everyone, LV- there is PLENTY for kids. Took my kids, they are 7, and they had a blast. Hotel has I think 5 pools. Visiting all the hotels they loved as each one is special/different. Plenty of shows.

Washington DC- Nothing like the National's Capital. Plenty to do there.

New York City- So much to do. Museums, Zoos, shopping, Ellis island, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, etc. I recommend at least once doing NYC during Christmas time. There are a few out door ice skating rinks, there are the window displays, the tree at Rockefeller Plaza, Radio City Spectacular

Hawaii- Beautiful, beaches, plenty to do there as well. Helicopter rides near volcanos, snorkeling, relaxing on the beach, other water sports, Dole Pineapple Plant, Macadamia Nut plant, Luaus, etc

Chicago is another one.

which bmx bike brand is better?

Shane M

which bmx brand is better

haro
redline
mongoose
powerlite

Answer
all the brands which u have listed are really low quality bmx brands. these are the type of brands in which parents go out looking to buy bikes for their kids, with average quality at a minimal price. if u really r interested in buying a bmx please look into buying a bike with a more reliable brand
try not to rush into a bike, and while u save more money, seriously take the time to look around and find the best deal, because u dont want to regret a buy later on. dont be afraid to spend the money, as down the track u will eventual upgrade and change parts.

Are 50cc gas powered dirt bikes legal for kids aged 13?

William

I'm 13 years old, I've been thinking about getting a gas powered dirt bike for kids, there are trails about 40 blocks away from my house, I plan on riding there, doing a jumps, and riding back. Is it legal to do that?

Answer
XYZ is correct as are the others.
Your parent will have to haul the bikes the 40 blocks to the trails. You cannot operate this on the road. Illegal.
I will give you credit for asking before making the decision to spend money on a motorized toy.

Going Green; Thinking of Buying a Bike?

Red

I live in a pedestrian-friendly little city with lots of sidewalks. My apartment is close to the places I frequent and I feel safe in my neighborhood. I think, under these circumstances, it would be irresponsible for me to continue driving a vehicle and better for my health and my environment to ride a bike instead. However, I haven't been on a bike since I was maybe 11; can you give me some tips about buying a bike? Is there bicycle etiquette I should learn? Any tips for people who haven't been on a bike in years?
Also, I have a 5 year old son and I'd like to tote him around with me. What are your opinions of bike trailers?

Answer
if you're looking to peddle around the neighborhood, run errands, etc. i'd recommend a city/hybrid bike. add a rack/panniers to increase carrying capacity. i bought a used kid carrier i attach to my bike to go to the grocery store. can haul even more. while on this subject, i'm afraid you'll find your five year old is too big for one. they have a one hundred pound weight limit. an alternative is a kid's size bike minus the front fork/wheel that clamps to the seatpost of your bike. your son will peddle/coast along behind you. he is getting old enough to have his own bike. something to think about. i live in a smallish town, too. a lot gets overlooked, but technically riding on the sidewalk is a no-no. wear a helmet.

when you decide to get a bike, go to a bike shop. not knocking the mart stores, but you'll get the kind of help you need to make an informed decision at a bike specific shop. you'll get a higher quality bike as well. expect to pay more, but it's worth it in the long run.

Answer
This "so-called" bicycle? http://www.amazon.com/Fusion-Suspension-Mountain-Orange-26-Inch/dp/B001DERH4E

A) Yes, you are waaaaay too tall for that bike.
B) Quit thinking tire or wheel size. You NEED a bigger (taller) FRAME size.
C) It's a crappy bike.
D) With a cheap full suspension bike you will B-O-U-N-C-E down the road more than ride down the road.
E) Unless you're off road a LOT - you don't NEED a full squish bike, especially a cheap one. Suspension parts absorb or soak up YOUR energy. With every stroke of the pedals, part of YOUR energy is soaked up by those parts & NOT transmitted to the rear wheel.

Want or need a good bike? Then Go To A Bicycle Shop - not online. You can test ride anything you like B4 the sale. Amazing! That "thing" you referred to would be broke in 6 months to a year at the most. Designed for kids & teenagers - not someone 6' 3" tall.

what brand is a good affordable kids bike?

Q. we are looking to get our son a 20 inch bike. he is turning 6 in a month and he is a tall boy so we were thinking a 20 inch would last him a good long time compared to his current 16 inch bike. is 20 inch a good size to get him to last him a long time?
what is a good affordable name brand?
by affordable i mean not over $100. are walmart bikes good for kids??

Answer
a walmart bike is fine. the higher priced bikes are made with higher quality parts to ensure a longer life. a kid's bike is only going to be used 3 or 4 years. its fine. happy biking.

yes, huffy is a good brand sold at many stores, maybe even walmart.

hey! also, in my town, our local police force had an auction in the spring. i was surprised at the condition of some of the bikes there. it really is worth trying if your city has any event like this.

Kids bike help please!?

C W

Ok now I am looking at getting my son a bike (either for christmas or his birthday) and at the moment he is 36 inches tall and weights 37 lbs, now should I get him a 12in bike with training wheels or a 16in bike with training wheels? Oh and he might go through a growth spurt soon according to his doctor b/c he has been the same height and weight for over 8 mo.

Answer
If he's going to go through a growth spurt soon, I recommend the 16 inch bike with training wheels. You can always adjust the seat to various heights. One helpful hint: be sure to keep the receipt. I always find this useful when purchasing gifts for little kids. Sometimes you would choose the wrong colored toys or pick up something that they don't like. With the receipt you can return it and even bring them along when you return it and have them choose out something that they like in the store. If they choose it out, there's absolutely no reason why they won't like the toy!

BMX Racers..?

Q. My 8 year old wants to get into bicycle moto-cross. What type of bike and gear ratio would be best? (He has a mongoose BMX trick bike, an xgames mono-shock bike, and an old-school huffy bike- would he be competitive with any of these)

Answer
I assume you will be racing ABA or NBL. At 8 years old it dosn't mater what type of bike you have as long as it is a bbmx. As for the gear ratio, makesure its not to high (or low).
Here's some often asked questions about BMX racing.

What equipment do I need so I can race BMX?

You need a "BMX" bike, and a helmet. You must also wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt when you race. It's also a good idea to wear gloves. Once you have raced for a while, you may want other equipment, but to get started that's all you need, and for many racers that's all they ever use.

What's a "BMX" bike?

A BMX bike is any 20" bicycle. That's the size bike most kids ride. BMX bikes usually don't have gears like "10 speeds" or mountain bikes. Also, to race at BMX tracks your bike needs to be equipped with handlebar grips, pads on the stem, your handlebar's crossbar (if it has one) and frame. Finally, the bikes can't have kickstands, reflectors, chain guards or other gadgets on them, and they can't have front brakes. This is for safety reasons - the gadgets can get caught on clothing and front breaks can cause you to go over the handle bars. Any bike store that sells BMX bikes can explain these requirements to you. (If they can't, go to a different bike store!)

May I try out BMX before I pay to join the NBL or ABA?

Yes. You can come to most tracks on any race day or practice day and try out the track. For insurance purposes you or your guardian must sign a release form.

How do I start racing?

Just come to the track in time for a race or practice session. If you're under 18 years old you will need to have a parent or guardian come with you. Just go to the registration booth, snack bar, or ask anyone for help. It's really easy.

I want to begin cycling but I don't know how to get started...HELP?

MalinaB

I want to begin cycling to build up my legs and to lower my blood pressure. I don't know what kind of bike to buy or the equipment that I need. Please Help.

Answer
That's the right track - you definitely need a local bike shop that you trust. Don't be intimidated! People of all ages, shapes, colors and sizes can ride a bicycle.

The first thing you gotta do is tell yourself - you can do this. Tell yourself that a lot. You aren't going out to be Lance Armstrong so no need to add any extra pressure whatsoever.

You are simply going to ride a bike... something we've been doing since we were kids! It's going to be fun!

Now you need a bike. And really - almost any bike will do, but you might consider not jumping into the road cycling elite arena just yet. How about a nice comfortable commuter bike with straight handlebars and a padded seat. Then a helmet.

Guess what? YOU ARE READY!

OK, OK, I know, you probably want to know like brand, type, etc. And the bike shop suggestion is good because you want to test ride! You can't do that in a dept. store. And you really can't get more than a "toolshed" bike at a dept. store. You'd be surprised - bike shops are competitive with the big box stores -- and they have a service department so please start there!

Another thing to do - join a bike forum online! A lot of forums have sections just for beginners... also for women so you can connect with other folks.

So test ride, talk to people, be fearless and have fun - that's all you need to get started. Hey if you don't buy anything from the bike shop - that's OK because let's say you go out and get a used bike - well it's going to need some service right? So those guys better treat you right or you'll take your service/repair dollars elsewhere!!

Do you see? You have the power girl. This is cool. I am excited for you, so don't get all caught up in the details - just take it one step at a time: Get a bike, get a helmet and start riding.

You can invest in other stuff later - like baskets, lights, clothing etc. as you see fit!

OK good luck and see you in the bike lane!

Do a google search for Sheldon Brown's web page... he's no longer with us on this earth - but tons of resources for beginners and pros alike.

At age 5, would you allow your kid to ride bikes up and down the road?

kristina s

All the neighborhood kids who are around the same age are allowed to ride up and down the road to different houses as they please. I am extremely uncomfortable with this (even though I am his step mom). Our street is not very busy but there are cars who go quite quickly sometimes. Plus, I don't know the neighbors here well enough to feel safe. I hate to tell him no because then he can't hang out with his friends, but I do tell him no because I'm just not comfortable. My husband's mom tells me that I need to just let go because that's what you do. So I feel pressure from her to go against my instincts. Am I over reacting or is he just too young at 5?

Answer
I had the same worries when our youngest was 5 and we moved to a new town. I compromised a bit, allowing my son to ride his bike on our road from "this house" to "this house". I later extended his space a few houses further, and now he's allowed to ride the whole block (he's 8). As I met the neighbours I found out that most of them had similar boundaries. Our road is not busy, but we live in the country so the cars that do drive past sometimes drive too fast, and the road is gravel with really deep ditches on each side. I worried a lot, but I talked to my kids a lot about safety, and paying attention to what's going on around them, and taught them to stop their bike and wait for a car to drive past them. I watched closely until I started to feel more confident. So, go with your instincts because only you know how busy the road is, how real the danger is, and how responsible your stepson is. You could just tell him he can only ride if you're outside watching him, at least until you feel more comfortable. And if you find a neighbour whose judgement you trust, talk to her about your worries and see what rules she has. Good luck!

When do kids usually start riding a bike?

MardeVigo

Answer
Typically, most are ready at 5 or 6. I got my first two wheeled bike for my 6th birthday and I was able to learn to ride it without training wheels. If you don't mind buying a bike with training wheels, 4 is the typical age. Every kid is different, though. I had a plastic Hot Wheels bike (trike) when I was 4 and I wore that things slap-kadab-out. Personally, I am not a fan of training wheels. They end up warping too quickly and give a false sense of security. I am glad my mom and dad let me learn to ride the big kid way. When learning to ride, if the bike is the right size for the kid, they are able to catch themselves before they hit the ground. If the bike is too big from the get-go, it is dangerous.

Answer
How about a clothing and toy drive for the kids. Set up some bins in your class, put up posters asking for gently used clothing and unbroken toys. Colouring books and crayons are still fairly inexpensive. People might have bikes they don't use anymore, baseball gloves and balls etc.
It sounds like a wonderful project, good luck, I know you will bring joy to the kids. Sorry to hear about your Mom, you can sure she is very proud of you in your effort to help others.
