Q. got a little kids' bike without a kickstand. How do you put one on and where can they be found?
=<
THIS bike is for a small child! not some adult who may find themself in the sahara or some such place. It is special to her and was her BIRTHDAY PRESENT!!!

Answer
Good question. I did a quick search at Performancebike and to my surprise, didn't find anything.

Try your local bike shop.

P.S. Real cyclists don't use kickstands......that's why God created trees and big rocks. Man didn't think there were enough of those, so he invented buildings, bikeracks, and lamposts as well. If you find yourself in the middle of the Sahara where none of those are available, just lay the bike down. No, sand in gears won't matter because you're screwed anyway. You're in the middle of the Sahara desert.

------
edit: calm down. the P.S. was just to entertain the other readers. I get most of my bike stuff at Performancebike.com, searched their website, found nothing. Your LBS (local bike shop) may have something in a bin..........

Seriously, even for a child, kickstands are much like your appendix. Personally, I find them annoying, because it encourages kids to park their bikes in the middle of the sidewalk where they're a hazard to others.

Yes, I have kids, in fact I have grandkids. I also have several trees in the yard that are much more stable and suitable for leaning a bike than any kickstand.

Why do road bicycle's have no kickstand?

Dent

It won't weigh the bike down THAT much

Answer
I agree they don't weigh taht much. The main point is they simply aren't needed. It just a piece of equipment that may get in the way and fail by getting in the spokes for example after a crash etc. MTB riders don't use them either for the same reasons. There's almost always something to lean the bike on. Heck half the kids with kickstands on their bikes drop there bike on the ground anyway.

Is a kids bike chain spaced differently?

ilikesta

I bought a standard chain at the store for my friends kids barbie bike. It seems to fit fine on the rear sprocket but the fron sprocket won't accept the spacing of the chain. Is there a different spacing for chains?

Answer
Yes, there are different chains available. There are generally speaking 2 pitches:
3/32 for dérailleur equipped bikes
1/8 for single speed and internal geared bikes like old 3 speeds
So unfortunately, there is no single common chain with bikes. Check out the links below for more.

What are some funny ideas for a picture scavenger hunt for a group of teenagers?

freebird10

like these:
Whole group casually sitting in a furniture store display
Your team group hugging a police officer
Team racing on kids bikes in a store
Team dressed in winter hats and scarves, going door to door caroling
Whole team in midair
Strangers belly button
etc. etc.
The more and the more embarrassing the better. but keep it PG
I need a good 100 probably

Answer
What is fun to do is find a famous scene from a movie or something, and take a picture of your team doing a reenactment. On one photo/video hunt, we had to find a boat and reenact the scene from the Titanic and scream, "I'm King of the World."

Find a sandbox and take a picture of your team member crawling across the desert searching for water.

Try taking a picture of your whole team upside down.

Just a few ideas...

Do loud pipes save lives?

kids yellow bike helmet image

concerned

I don't get it. Most bikers with loud pipes wear black outfits and eggshell thin helmets. If they are so concerned with being safe and being noticed on the roads, who don't they wear something more visible and use adequate helmets?

Answer
Loud Pipe Don't Save Lives.
Anyone believing this myth is kidding themselves.
I ride the quietest motorcycle made. 2001 1800 Honda Goldwing. I wear one of those dreaded full face helmets. You know, the one that limits peripheral vision and prevents you from hearing the cars around you (common arguments against full face helmets). I wear E.A.R. Taperfit 2 earplugs with a NRR of 32dB. Conventional wisdom would lead you to believe I wouldn't hear a thing during a ride. Conventional wisdom is dead wrong. The helmet and especially the ear plugs kills all the "white" noise, namely the wind. The wind that some riders strongly believe is the vital part of riding. Feeling the wind in the hair and on the face. I am here to tell you, they are dead wrong. That wind in the hair also means wind noise in the ears. Noise is fatiguing and can and will cause loss of hearing and can produce tinnitus aka ringing in the ears. All that noise compounded with a loud engine and exhaust system prevents a rider from hearing traffic around you. I am able to hear what is happening around me just fine. Has saved me a time or two. Better defense is to ride defensively and wear the safety gear.

I find it interesting that the people that believe loud pipes save lives and full face helmets prevent you from hearing traffic.......... Quite a contradiction. They want to hear the traffic, so they don't wear a full face helmet or any helmet at all. They want to hear traffic so they make their motorcycle as loud a possible. I don't get it.

Note for you loud pipes save lives believers. While driving a car I observe a motorcycle in my rear view mirror. That whole speed of light thing. 1/2 to 2 miles away depending on traffic and hills. Motorcycle will overtake me. No problems, I am aware of their presence. Bike get closer. Bike is a Harley. Again no problem, but now I am into experiment mode. When can I hear the bike? By the time I hear the V-Twin thru straight pipes, it is in the danger zone. While we pass safely and legally, the bike is so close before I hear it, if I were day dreaming and changed lanes, the hapless rider would have almost no time or space to maneuver. Not good for the safety of the rider.

No my fellow riders, a little loud is OK as long as you wear hearing protection. Believing loud pipes enclose you in a force field of protection will give you a false sense of security. My Goldwing is yellow, helmet is yellow, as is my jacket. Most visible bike on the road. And I still ride KNOWING someone is not going to see me. I never forget that for one second. A false sense of security will get you killed.

This is my beliefs and I am sticking to them.

Does it drive you bananas when kids scream when they are outside(or otherwise for that matter)?

Raptor Mam

Every time my kids scream, or even kids around the neighborhood within ear shot, I'm jumping up to see what's wrong, often(thank God) only to discover that they're just playing. I'm fat. It's not easy for me to jump up, but dang it-I'll do it to check on them!!! I'd hate to not to, that one time, and it be a dire circumstance.
I keep trying to tell my kids to PLEASE not scream unless something is wrong. They're kids, though. I can't fault them for wanting to use outside voices when they're outside.

Any stories you can share regarding the subject?
AAUGH! Screaming "help" while in the pool??? Nooottt cool, J!

Answer
If the screaming is happening between the hours of noon and 10pm and endures less than 60 seconds in a single burst I generally ignore it. If it continues and is loud and shrill I get up and go check and these ain't even my kids, they're just a roving pack of neighborhood rugrats.

Most of the time they're just squabbling over something but one time a little girl had wrecked her bike and skinned her knees & elbows pretty bad, of course her parents weren't home so I went & got the first aid kit out of my truck and fixed her owies and gave her some lemonade. I asked her if her Mom would be mad if she knew she was out riding her bike in the street without a helmet and she said she lost her helmet and her Mom said she couldn't get another one until she earned the $ to buy it herself. Guess who went and got the kid a helmet?

Another time two little boys had discovered a yellow jacket nest and though they were the same distance from my house as their own house their parents couldn't hear them because they had their music up LOUD and were busy drinking. I was the one who got stung getting the boys away from the yellow jackets and getting all the bugs off them. The parents acted like they were a little annoyed to have to turn their music down and put down their beers.

Now I get visits from various urchins every time I'm outside. It's kind of nice because they like to help me with yard work and play fetch with the dog but they also want to drink up all my lemonade and ask about 599 questions in a single breath.

But, yeah, I get my fatasss up to check too, you never know and the thought of something awful happening to one of them is what's giving me gray hairs, I'm certain of it. There's like 9 of them I see on this block on a regular basis and when I first moved here and observed them running loose with absolutely no supervision I decided it would be best to make friends of them rather than be the curmudgeon who gets to clean eggs off my truck and put out flaming bags of poop left on the porch. I think that was a baseless concern, these kids all seem to be really bright, good kids. I think we're lucky to have them around. I just wish their parents were doing a little more to keep them safer.

All the parents around here work all day, or they're gone all day anyway (even the drunkards with the loud music) and it seems like the all the kids from the age of about 6 & up are home alone all day. If they can't afford daycare I'd think they'd get these kids into some kind of summer time activities. I know times are tough all over but the YMCA and the parks and recreation department offers stuff that's free or cheap and they offer "scholarships" to low income families. Churches offer vacation bible school and that's ALWAYS free, and most of the time they'll pick them up, drop them off and feed them as well. I'm not big on religion at all but at least there's adult supervision there.

These are their KIDS, they're more precious than ANYTHING else. I know they wanna eat everyday and sleep inside on a bed and all, but damn, what's the point of making all that happen just to let them play in the effing street all day???

what size bike to get my daughters?

erika c

i would like to get my daughters each a bike as a suprise for christmas. I was wondering if a 20 in bike is to small, should i go up to a 24in bike. One of my daughters is 10 and is about 59in or so. The other is 9 and about 55-56in. I am looking at 20in kids bikes (target, kmart, walmart) or a 24in mountain bike type. Thanks

Answer
My daughter is small for her age (10.5 now & 52") and I bought her a 24" mountain bike last spring. Being an avid cyclist, I'm sure the bike is a very good fit. My other daughter is a small 8.5 year old & 47" tall and is still on a 20" for another year or two. So I will say both your girls should have 24" or, in the case of your oldest, a 26" may be needed in another year at most as she's almost 5' tall.

Answer
It's not only in N.Z But also Australia and the US have the same problem.
Naturally the blame these days seem to be the Takeaway outfits such as MacDonald's, Not true. Kids today have become rather lazy, technology has taken over and computers have taken over Sports.
Parents need to get their act together and involve themselves with sporting activities.
Years ago kids would be out on there bikes - playing footy - Baseball etc. Parents would also be involve, picnics and camping was a big thing.
I have never seen so many children of today, committing criminal acts, sheer boredom

That's the best crock I've ever heard from a gigolo in a long time.

It takes MONEY or at least A JOB to meet your responsiblity to a woman who will be the mother of your child. Unless, neither of you will work and you will all live happily ever after from her dad's or her ex-husband's money.

Don't they teach you about pride in the ashram?

My words are harsh, but my meaning (for the best interests of all concerned including a baby girl) is quite sincere and heartfelt.

Does anyone know where there is bicycle lessons in saginaw mi?

helllo1234

Answer
Interesting question. I live no where near Saginaw, so I can only give ideas.
Please ignore if someone specifically answers you.
First of all "bicycle lessons" for WHO? An adult? a child?
Typically children learn with the help of their parents (or older sibling, or perhaps a friend)
Children do NOT have the hand strength to use adult brakes, so their needs are significantly different from adults. (Along with their small size (poor visibility) and slow speeds and poor judgment and attention). For a child, training wheels on a small 1 speed bike along with the usual protective gear (at least a helmet and long pants, long shirt and possibly bike gloves -- or even knee and elbow pads) is all you need. I "taught" my kids by running along side them as they practiced.
-=-
I do not know if there ARE adult training wheels. I would think one would be sufficient, and possibly a child's training wheel could be modified. For an adult, I would use a womans bike as small as possible (the limitation is that the rider has to be able to pedal, too small a bike and the pedaling becomes almost impossible (as well as throwing off balance). The smaller the bike, the easier it will be to catch yourself as you lose your balance. You can tell when you are going over...
-=-
Practice is the ONLY way to learn. I would find a sidewalk with grass on either side of it and practice there. The funny thing about learning how to bike is that you can not balance on a bike if it is going too SLOWLY. So, unfortunately, you have to start at a speed that may make you uncomfortable...
The speed of the bike actually helps you balance.
-=-
Here is my suggestion: visit some bike shops and ask. NOT Walmart or KMart/Sears, etc. A specialty shop. Unless you already have your own bike, buy a used one. The equipment needs to be the same as for a kid. You do not need specialty pants, shirt or shoes! If no one seems to be able to help, go back to the one you found was the friendliest and ask if you could post an advertisement on their Bulletin board (which most shops have). Say you want 3 or 4 - 30 minute lessons and will pay $15 each. (depending on the local economy). Bike shops typically have a lot of student help, and I'm guessing you can find a teen willing to help you. You probably should speak to them to be sure they seem competent enough to help.
-=-
I believe an adult can learn on their own. I would suggest getting elbow and knee pads, I'm not sure what kind. Some are rigid, some more flexible. Definitely gloves. ANd ALWAYS a helmet.
Start out going straight. Once you can start and stop, start practicing turns. You may have to find a parking lot instead of a sidewalk for that... I don't know what parks are available. Schools (not talking urban Saginaw) have bike paths that are learner friendly leading to them from the surrounding neighborhoods.
-=-
Michigan DOT has information on regional bike trails, and there are books on it too.
-=-
HTH
-=-
edit
Oh unless you are a "natural" (and you never know, till you try), all the stuff they tell you about how high the seat is, the distance between the seat and the handle bars, the tire size,, all that is for people who CAN ride, not people learning...Buy or borrow the smallest bike you can pedal comfortably with, with the biggest tires, hand brakes would be nice, but pedal brakes are sufficient to start. First thing to learn is starting and stopping and dismounting so that you don't fall over...that's why I recommend a woman's bike - you can just hop off the seat. When seated you Should be able to touch the ground with at least one foot, probably both (toes at least) so that you don't fall over every time you slow down.
-=-
Once you get better, you will need a better bike, for sure. First place I'd look for that first bike is garage sales, Craigslist, and neighbors who have older kids. Fewer gears is better. You should learn the basics on flat ground. That shouldn't be difficult in Saginaw, lol.

Is there an infant seat system for bike trailers?

kids bike age 4 image

Arwen

Years ago we sold our car to get a slower lifestyle in our suburban town, and for 10 years we lived by bike and bus. We used the bike for short trips and for going places the bus didn't go. At the time the bus service didn't run on Sundays or holidays, so if we wanted to go anywhere, we had to take the bikes.

At the time we had three children - age 7, 4.5 and a newborn. The 7 year old rode his own bike, the 4.5 year old rode behind his dad on a trail-a-bike, and we jury-rigged an old infant seat into a bike trailer for the infant. I also carried all our groceries in that trailer, and once, a door (without the baby!). Eventually they all rode their own bikes, but it started this way.

My brother's wife is about to have a kid, and I want to give them a bike trailer to go riding with their new baby.

Has anyone invented/marketed a better system for infants in bike trailers? If so, what bike trailer does it work with, and where can I get it?

Answer
Most bike systems are designed for babies 9 months and over. It's an issue of being able to hold their heads up enough to prevent the sort of jostling that biking creates. Even a carseat in a bike trailer, isn't secure enough to hold them steady, especially not in the case of a spill or accident. I also wanted something for our five month old to use with our bikes in the spring, but no such luck. Now she's 16 months, and we've gotten her a bike seat.

I think maybe just buy them a bike trailer and let them decide what they are going to do to. It might've been a risk you and your husband were willing to take, but each parent should decide for themselves.

Good luck!

What is a good age for kids to start riding their bike?

What age do u think a child should be taught to ride a bike with training wheels? without training wheels?
What age do u think is appropriate for a kid to ride their bike into town with an adult or an older kid like a teenager maybe?
What age do u think is appropriate for a kid to be able to ride a bike downtown themselves?

any other thoughts about kids riding bikes?

Answer
it varies and depends how motivated the child is. my kids started riding w/ training wheels at 3 and w/o between 4 and 6 (some of my kids were more cautious and others were more motivated). they biked into town (maybe 4 miles for us) with an adult from about 5 or 6. as for by themselves, they haven't yet. my oldest is 10 and she sometimes bikes short distances around the neighborhood with a friend.

other thoughts: helmets are not optional. (speaking as someone who got a concussion riding my bike!)

I was wondering if anyone had any helpful ideas on teaching my 6 year old granddaughter to ride her bike w/o training wheels. She gets on the bike and then acts like she doesn't want to peddle and of course falls. Think grandpa is being a little too hard on her and was hoping for ideas....

Answer
Riding on grass is good idea. Also, grandpa should walk along and stabilize the bicycle as she gets the hang of pedaling. Won't take long before she'll be zipping around as long as she's got even minimal coordination.

I helped my granddaughter learn to ride by slowly bending the training wheels up further and further. Training wheels should come with a way to easily adjust their height. Bending the support frame was not easy. Maybe they do. I haven't checked.

How do I teach my 8 year old how to ride a bike?

meggus31

How do I teach my 8 year old how to ride a bike? His father doesn't live with us. Are there any certain tips or tricks? He still uses training wheels. Thanks!

Answer
First, ignore all these terrible answers!!!

Next, forget about training wheels and get him a Strider bike or other similar running bike or modify his current bike by removing the pedals and lowering the seat so that he can easily put his feet on the ground... Running bikes are huge in Europe but not as much here in the states for some reason, though they work amazing well. That pinkbike photo that someone linked to is actually a running bike in action. Here's another great photo & video to go with it...
http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/3822679/
http://www.pinkbike.com/video/92454/

To give you an idea of what they're about... they eliminate the need for the child to focus on balancing and pedaling since it complicates the learning curve. By eliminating the pedals, you child can focus on balancing without having to worry about the pedals and it also provides them the comfort level of knowing that they can just put their feet down at any time if they begin to lose balance. After they've got the balancing down, they can step up to a 'real' bike and the pedaling comes as second nature.

If your child already has a bike, you dont need to buy a dedicated running bike... you can mimic a running bike by just removing the pedals from the crank arms and dropping the seat all the way down so that they can comfortably put their feet down.

I would like to start bike riding to shed some baby weight what are the best bike trailer/bike combos?

kids bike internal hub
on Shimano Alfine S700 Internal Hub Small Parts Kit
kids bike internal hub image

Yeah Momma

i need a bike and want to buy a bike trailer, what type of bike should be used?

Answer
- how much do you want to/can you spend?
- what kind of trailer - cargo or kid?
- how long and where do you want to ride (urban/country, flat/hilly/mountainous)?
- commuting or sports/training?
- what's your weight - and do you do any kind of sports?
- are you fixed on a bike/trailer combo, or would a (two or three wheeled) bakfiets be a practical alternative?

Unless you want to lay down at least 4k$/â¬, there's no sense in talking about 'best'. You can start thinking about 'good' (enough for everyday use) with 2k$/⬠and either the willingness to learn basic maintenance or a friendly LBS within reach.

As a short guide to what I'd consider best (I'll just throw in a few buzzwords, use google or come back here if you want to know more):
- steel frame, touring geometry, Rohloff dropouts
- Rohloff internal geared rear hub
- SON front hub generator
- Edelux front bike light, b&m rear light
- Magura hydraulic disc brakes
- disc brake rims, Schwalbe Marathon Supreme tires in 26x2.00, DD stainless spokes
- Brooks leather saddle
- closed chain box, e.g. Hebie Chainglider

That'll cut down the yearly maintenance to the gear oil change and regular inspection (and occasional exchange) of brake pads and chain.

- Weber hitch
- brand trailer - for kids, Chariot or Croozer, for cargo, Roland or Carry Freedom

Why do many kids bicycles' pedals not rotate freely in reverse direction?

Nash R

I have to buy a kids bicycle (20"). I noticed that pedals in many of these bicycles do not rotate freely in reverse direction. Is that a feature or a bug? It's useful to have them rotate freely so that you can easily bring to them to starting position when you're just starting your ride.

Answer
As others have noted that style of brake is known as a 'coaster' brake and is very common with bicycles designed for younger kids. It operates much like a drum brake in that when operated by pedalling backwards small internal plates are pressed against the internal shell of the rear hub. Kids bicycles have coaster brakes because smaller children for the most part do not have enough hand strength or have not developed enough coordination to operate a hand brake that you would see on most adult or larger kids bikes. Yet they do need to be able to stop, hence the coaster brake. On larger kids bikes -- with 20" wheels or BMX style frames -- you will often see a combination of a front hand brake with a coaster brake. This is sort of an inbetween bike, if you will, designed to allow the developement of the hand strength and coordination necessary to operate a normal hand brake.

My husband says we should get a lighter weight bike for my daughter but I think that would be even more likely to fall over. Is there a brand of bike that has a low center of gravity or something similar that would make it easier to learn to ride? She's 6 and has a rather heavy "Cool Ride" by Dynacraft.

Answer
Your husband is right - a lighter bike would be easier to balance on: less weight = less work to balance. With a heavy bike she has to balance her weight plus the bike. Unfortunately though, they don't really make lightweight bikes for kids - they all seem to be horribly heavy.

A low center of gravity might help a bit, but you're not going to find a bike like that - all the weight goes into the structure, and anyway, the heaviest thing she's balancing is herself - the bike is only a minor part of the weight.

What you may want to do is get a 'balance bike'. These bikes train the child to balance - they have no pedals and the kid runs the bike along. The idea is to get the child to pick his/her feet up and start to learn to balance. After that, you can buy her a regular bike and she'll already have the balancing skill.

What is a good bicycle for a beginning cyclist?

justwonder

Currently in my early 40's. I haven't spent much time riding a bike since I was a kid, though I have used the Lifecycle at the gym many times. Now I have moved to a place where there are a lot of outdoor trails and I want to get into outdoor cycling. But I don't want to spend a lot of money for a fancy bike right away, since I'm still a beginner.

What is a good entry-level bike that I should look for. What price range are we talking? 300? 500?

Thanks.
Forgot to add, I'll be looking at men's bikes.
;-)

Answer
Avoid buying a bike at a place like Wal-Mart. Often the bikes are put together incorrectly, are unsafe, and they are so-o-o heavy and uncomfortable. In addition, they often have very few sizes, if any beyond child and adult, and fit is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING with any bicycle. While these bikes are cheap, the quality also absolutely sucks. (Try picking one of those babies up, then compare it to a bike from an actual bike shop!)

Next: what kind of riding do you want to do? All paved bike paths, on the road, on trails? If you want to do any trail riding, you want a mountain bike. If you are going to only ride on paved paths or roads, you will want a hybrid or road bike.

Find a local bike shop and talk to a sales person about the kind of riding you want to do and your budget. Actually, go to a few shops that sell different brands. Test ride a few different bikes and see what feels good. Different brands all have slightly different geometries. Some good brands to look for include Specialized, Trek, Giant, Gary Fisher (mountain bikes only), Jamis, Cannondale, Bianchi and Fuji. Schwinn is even back in the market making some decent stuff, but only if you buy it from a bike shop, not a big chain store! Jamis bikes are not as widely available as some of these other brands but are often the best priced for what you get.

For just starting out you can find a bike for under $500. Generally avoid anything under $350 unless it is on sale. If you buy after the 2007 models come out, you can probably get a 2006 model on sale this fall.

A road bike (with drop bars and everything) will probably be out of your price range--they generally start up around $600+ since they are not as popular with recreational cyclists. But if you are going to ride on pavement, you can find a 700c wheel hybrid, or "flat bar" road bike in the $500 range. If you are going to be riding off road, stick to the name brands, but you can get an entry level bike in the $400-$500 range.

I was not getting sufficient answers.

My husband asked me to text his mom to see if she and his dad or just she would like to come to the 3d ultrasound we are having next week to hopefully try to find out the gender of our baby. I have a child from a previous marriage that they call their grandchild but this is technically their first biological. After 3 days she texted and said "well, the kids will be in school so I will have to check". The kids are 13 and 10 and they spaced their kids 12-15 years apart (my husband is in his mid 20s and so am I). His dad lost his job a few mos ago and she has not worked in years, if ever so I asked my husband "what else do they have to do?" I think he was a little perplexed by her response as well. They live about an hr away in a large suburb and we live in the big city. Rarely, they come down to our place.

Is she just trying to tell us she is not interested in coming? Since I got pregnant, she has been acting really goofy. Its like she's having a mid life crisis and has started dressing really tacky (skin tight and short everything) and has been posing like she's some kind of model when I am around and her husband is around. Could it be that she doesn't want to come because she is jealous? The kids ride the bus or their bike to school, I think. What's their problem? Shouldn't they want to be part of their grand child's life?
YOU ARE WRONG! Quit making assumptions. This is a large facility with large suites for the family. The facility actually encourages patients to bring relatives for the event.
1) She doesn't use Fb
2) They have a V8, fancy SUV and a nice luxury sedan

Answer
she dont want to be reminded shes getting old.. Some weird idea of out of sight.. Out of mind.. She thinks shes a glamor queen.. And cant see the wrincles in the mirror... That would blow her world of fantasy..

Can anyone identify this vintage, hard plastic doll by description?

Roya

Hey all,

My fiancee and I were talking about favorite toys of our childhood, when I remembered an obscure, garage sale find that was a favorite of mine. I'm dying to know what they are, and would like to see if I could possibly grab a few for my daughter today, but have no idea what they are.

From what my childhood memories recall, they were a completely hard plastic, molded doll, with, I believe, flat backs. AKA, only the front half of the doll (Torso, toes, feet, hands, face, etc...) were molded and they had nothing on the back molded. They -may- have had hair, but I can't recall that, but I do not think so.

Also, they had clothes that were molded and painted as well, that snapped onto the front of the doll and stayed in place.

I remember I had a 'modeling' stage that went with the dolls. If I recall correctly, it had two curtained areas on each side, and you put the dolls on their stands that went around the track, and you turned a crank in the back. The crank caused the dolls to wiggle back and forth as they trekked around the modeling path (Wiggled left and right to look like 'walking') and walked the modeling ramp, then through the 2nd curtain, and back into the back again so you could change clothes again, and have them model the next outfit.

So...does anyone by chance know what these dolls are? I'm dying of curiosity!

Thanks so much,
Roya
Nope, just did a searchon Walking Majorette Doll, and that wasn't it.

The doll looked more along the lines of a small gingerbread shape, if that makes sense? No moving joints, if I remember correctly. Completely stiff and hard plastic.

They -may- have had a back to them, and the clothes snap around the front and back to connect, but I don't think so. I think I'm confusing them with the modern polly pocket dolls they came out with. (The magic closet release with the magnet clothing.)

The toys were around in the 80's, as that's when I grew up. They may have been made earlier, but I remember clearly having them in either early or late 80's..if that helps?

Answer
I have EXACTLY
what you are looking for...

" Dolly Pops "
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNrMzaw_D_4
Knickerbocker
circa-1979

" These little dolls are dated 1979 but were heavily marketed in the 80s.
They are small hard plastic dolls with interchangeable snap-on plastic
clothing, bikes, chairs, etc. The Dolly Pops kids had painted on undies
and usually had synthetic ponytails that could be combed or braided.
Their clothing would easily pop on and off.

http://www.dollinfo.com/dpops.htm
http://www.skooldays.com/categories/toys/ty1272.htm

Also sold were other flat "picture frame" playsets that had handles for
easy transporting. Some of the themes were a dress shop, pet or toy
store, market, western scenes, sports ... There were four outfit groupings
to choose from: School Time, Party Time, Play Time and Country Time.
Imagine paper dolls come to life in 3D ... "

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6faD6JfxCI&feature=related

The playsets were the Dolly Pops Poptown,
the Dollypops Dollhouse,
and the Dollypops Dress Show { among others }

It is the Dress Show playset that has the "runway"
that you have mentioned ... You can find it here

These sets found on Ebay are slim
and of questionable quality -
I cannot recommend them - sigh

why do cops go after blacks and latinos more than others?

I always see how they target us and always take us to prison for no reason.
For example i was watching a cops show and when he passed a group of white kids he didnt notice but when he saw to black kids on bikes he gets out of the car and attempts to arrest them.

Answer
/ TV shows portray exactly what they want you to believe and see.

In reality, there are more Black and Latino crimes committed in the United States than by any other group. Those are stats based on convictions, not arrests. To convict, the court needs proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

So the true question is, Why do Blacks and Latinos commit more crimes than another race?

We are wanting donations or sponsorships from corportions like Wal-Mart, Target, etc. If we cannot get donations, maybe a discount rate for buying in bulk? Does anyone have experience in this? We're looking for suggestions/ideas. Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer
If you're looking for donations from retail stores like Wal-Mart, call those stores directly. Ask to speak with the store manager or co-manager. Some stores may have a designated person who handles community involvement instead of the store manager.

Provide them with the information like the organization you're with and what the event is. If you're not with a well-known charitable organization like the Boy/Girl Scouts, they may ask for a copy of your 501c form (a US tax form) which proves you're a non-profit organization.

Don't limit yourself to just retail stores either. There's many businesses who will gladly make donations if they're asked. Many places have a budget for community involvement and will gladly make donations within their company's guidelines.

If you're looking for ideas on businesses in your area who have good reputations for donations, try your local Chamber of Commerce. Usually those offices have good business relationships and contacts that can help out.

Should children be allowed to race motocross?

kids bike new zealand
on The beautiful, bold, beasty bikes have arrived. I just fell in love ...
kids bike new zealand image

Somebody

My husband and I both raced as teenagers (starting at 14) we were never that good but we enjoyed it and its how we met. My son is turning 4 next month and my husband has suggested we get him a bike, I'm unsure and my parents are against it. Am I being an overprotective mother, or should we wait until he is older?

Answer
I have no problem with kids racing at all and my youngest started his career at the age of 4 and is now racing pro lites nationally. Generally when they start there is not as much speed and less chance of injury and not till they make A grade as Junior and start racing at a higher level that it becomes a dangerous sport. Make sure you purchase all the proper safety gear. The only advice I would give is to get the bike and start your son racing but be guided by his own interest in the sport. i know that we unintentional created a monster in buying our son that first bike as we had not been involved in the sport prior. Little did we know that once he threw his leg over the bike it was going to be a commitment that would take us thousands of kilometres just to have him race and this year he has to fly to new zealand to race the sx. It is expensive and would not have been a career of my choosing for him as I have sat listening to the motors on the start line as they jump from the line with my fingers crossed as they all head for that first corner. Your stomach is always in knots especially when a yellow flag goes out and your son does not come. I have had phone calls when not there to state that he has been badly injured and have jumped in the car and hopped a plane and then spent the next 4 months nursing him. He has had both arms broken at once, his leg broken, foot, collarbone, Knocked out, fractured ribs stitches in his face, arm, leg and the worst by far a dislocated leg. So if your child loves the sport to that extent be warned as it ends up taking you and the whole family on a ride you may not expect. My other children raced but did not have the need, desire or passion that my youngest has. So let your son choose if he likes the sport as just because parents may like it that does not mean their children will. So many parents think that their child will be the next chad reed but in reality many either don't have the talent or desire or money to fund it and when they get to teenagers find other interests and I know a family friend wanted their son to race and be interested and were disappointed when they really hated it. That child is now a top gymnast and he loves it.
Thing is your son may just love the sport as a hobby and it is something that a family can do together. And no you are not being overprotective but I have always felt that I cannot wrap my kids in cotton wool and there is so few sports left to boys that enable them to be boys. 4 is fine to start racing.

What does it say about a guy when most of their friends are girls?

Andy T

What kind of guy do you think of? What personality traits? Does the guy look for female friends or do the girls find him

Answer
Well. Andy, you've tagged me! I have very few male friends, and in general i don't like the male mystique.
This is going to antagonize a lot of .....if not all of the males reading this, but the whole macho thing is bullsh--t!. Before you and the other guys reading this classify me as a pansy or gay let me tell you some of the things I've done. I've climbed Denali in Alaska (20,300 ft.), Devil's Tower in Wyoming, soloed Popocatepetl south of Mexico City, broke the Washington state welterweight Olympic press record, sky dived, bungee jumped off of an ice covered railroad bridge in Victoria, New Zealand, and bicycled 4250 miles alone across the United States. I love to cook, bake, classical music, ballet, and I've rewired my home, installed central air conditioning,.....I could go on, but you and the other guys reading this probably think it's bullsh...t too. It doesn't matter; it's all true. But, and here's the thing. I hated sports as a kid... my eyesight wasn't very good and I didn't have any depth perception so the other kids thought I was a klutz.
Anyway, when I reached puberty (~14), I decided that just because I was a gentle soul that didn't mean I was weak. I started lifting and got thrown out of school for fighting until my classmates figured I was crazy and left me alone. That was fine with me because that's all I ever wanted. So it turned out that I had more in common with girls than with guys and most of my friends are women. I can talk to them about all kinds of things. Most of the guys I know are interested in only three things: sports, sex, and politics....and I'm only interested in one of those. As to the macho crap and not showing emotion, I'm a complete failure. I cry at sad movies, and when I went to India to work with Mother Teresa it destroyed me. I will suffer from PTSD for the rest of my life, but I'm still lifting, and though my knees won't let me run anymore, I can still out ride most guys half my age on my bike. I grant you I'm weird. I can thank the way I was treated by the so called "macho" guys when I was young. It turned out to be a blessing. I'm my own man and I think for myself and do anything I damn well please and don't give a damn what other guys think!

How do I know what the best bike for me is?

I am looking to get a bike to give me a cardio alternative to walking or running. I haven't ridden a bike since I was a kid, so I am trying to figure out what kind of bike to get -- mountain bike, road bike etc. How do I make sure that I get the right bike for me --- kind and size?

Answer
Start by reading "Bicycles: How to Choose"
http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bicycle.html

It's all based on "where & how" you will be riding. Road bikes will be your fastest choice but for the streets & smooth roads ONLY. Mountain bikes or all-terrain bikes basically suck on the streets because of the knobby off road tires & suspension parts zapping your energy. Knobby tires slow you down. And with every turn of the pedals, part of your energy is absorbed or soaked up by suspension parts. All-terrain bikes are OK on the streets ONLY if they have a smoother "street friendly" tread design & "lock-out" front forks. This (in essence) turns the suspension fork into a rigid fork with the simple twist of a switch.

Hybrids are a good "all around" type bike. They are great at nothing - but still good at many things. They can be ridden on the streets or light (man-made) groomed off-road trails of finely crushed stone.

"How do I make sure that I get the right bike for me --- kind and size?" Nine very, very simple words... See your authorized, independent, knowledgeable, friendly, local BICYCLE shop! Not K-Mart, Wally World or Target. At a REAL bicycle shop you can TRY B4 you BUY! You can test ride as many bikes as your little heart desires before the sale!

Other advantages are...
1) Professional sales - not some minimum wage "associate".
2) Professional assembly of the bike by a certified mechanic - again, not some minimum wage associate.
3) FREE service after the sale. ALL new bikes require a tune-up as shift & brake cables stretch a bit during the break-in process. Some shops do this only once. Some for a year. A bike shop near me does this for LIFE!
http://bigshark.com/about/policies-and-shipping-pg11.htm
4) Vastly better quality. Wally World lists bicycles on their website in the TOY Dept.! Does that give you a clue? A quality bike from a REAL bicycle shop - taken care of properly - can last a lifetime. Those from discount stores are "disposable bikes", meant to be ridden a year or so - then into a dumpster.

See link below. This is my "pride & joy" - a 2011 Raleigh Sojourn touring road bike. Time spent in the shop for repairs? ZERO. Money spent after the sale? A bottle of chain oil (about $8.00) and a set of new tires when the original ones wore out. And I replaced them with the SAME tires. Flat tires to date? ZERO - none - nada. Sure - you'll need to do routine maintenance & cleaning on any type of bike. But getting a quality bike from the start cost LESS in the long run.

What is the best way to get pen ink off a baseball card?

Christophe

I have a vintage Mickey Mantle and I purchased it at a discount because it has been drawn on. I've tried using a pencil eraser to no avail. I would like to get the ink off but I don't want to use anything too abrasive. Any suggestions?

Answer
Sorry! But that's a tree that you'll be baking up for a long time. All the methods I know of, would also remove the printed materials on the card. If you experiment, buy new cards, and try your methods on those, then the valuable Mantle card. I would try a document restoring firm, or even a painting restoring firm, for some assistance or ideas on methods to remove ink. I wouldn't trust anything I would find on this site with such a valuable item. It gets screwed up, your out all the way. Leave this up to the professionals that I suggested, they make a living at it, and have a trusted reputation in that area. Good Luck Though. Dang, a Mickey Mantle Baseball Card, I haven't seen one of those since I was a kid, and place it my spokes on my bike for that motor sound. I was a Tigers fan, still am. LOL

"Obama believes that after an abortion....
and the child comes out ALIVE, he believes that there is a right to kill it (just not feed it or care for it) until it dies. He also believes that the deserts and rivers should be closed down for uses such as dirt biking and such."

a conservative republican told this to me, what are they actually trying to say Obama wants to do? or is it completely made up?

Answer
The "Born Alive" issue is irrelevant. The Fetus is incapable of surviving at all at the point that the issue is referring to. The deserts and rivers thing I am not familiar with, but frankly, it sounds like something that was taken way out of context and blown way out of proportion by paranoid repubs, just like the first issue.

where can i find a mini dirt bike for under 500 dollers?

Q. I am looking for a 125cc to 150cc mini dirt bike for my child.
i want it to be nice but not to expensive because he will soon grow out of it.
thank you!

Answer
a 125 to 150 is not really for a child. It will be tough to get something for 500.00 that is a major brand. Remember a Honda, Yamaha Kawaski, Suzuki will hold some value especially the entry level bikes. It is hard to tell you what to look for since you did not mention his size, age, and skill level.
