Boy

I am a 14 year old boy looking for a simple to follow workout and nutrional plan with the goal to build lean muscle and look great. This is in hope of being a better baseball player. Any tips, or workout plans would be great, thanks.

Answer
Ok for eating, dont eat junk...duh, thats easy a lot of people know that. Try to not eat a lot of salty things, it traps water in you and it doesnt help you lose weight. Drink lots and lots of water, stay away from slim fast/vitamin water/energy drinks, some might be good the energy drinks are horrible for you and water beats them all out for quality and its FREE! Water is the bodies oil. Drink more and youll feel great. Try to eat small but more portions of good food throughout the day, it speeds up your matabolism.

To burn fat, you need cardio and lots of it. Go running, biking, swimming, jump rope is pretty good and fun sometimes and rowing.

But if your serious about losing FAT you need to forget about your scale and just look at your body. Muscle weighs a lot more than fat so if you start working out and get discouraged because your gaining weight its because your getting toner, and thats a good thing!

Ok then, some good work outs for ya...These are gonna be good for ya because you dont even need a gym or any real equipment, just mostly dead weight exercises.

For the buns
Plie
Stand with feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, arms at sides, toes turned out.
Tuck tailbone under and contract glutes.
Lower body into a plie squat as low as you can go without allowing knees to creep past toes.
Simultaneously raise arms to shoulder height in front of body, palms down. Hold for 2 seconds, then return to starting position.
After 20 reps, pulse at the bottom for 20 seconds.

Hip-Lift Progression
This is an awesome way to relieve tension in your lower back and work your butt at the same time. (A cushy mat will keep your tailbone from crying afterward.)
Lie on your back with your arms at your sides with your knees bent and your feet on the floor.
Lift your hips toward the ceiling. Hold for 1 count, and then lower back down.
Repeat the lifts for 60 seconds, squeezing your glutes and hamstrings at the top of the range of motion. Be careful not to overarch your spine.
To make this exercise more difficult, extend one leg at the top of the lift. Keep your thighs parallel and hold the lifted position for about 5 seconds.
Keeping your hips up, place your foot back on the floor and then lower your hips.
Repeat this exercise for 30 seconds; switch sides and do the move for another 30 seconds on the other

Dumbbell Squats
A simple way to kick off even a quickie workout, these squats are powerful little moves. Over time, increase reps and dumbbell weight to amp them up.
Start with your feet shoulder-width apart and 8- to 10-pound dumbbells by your thighs.
Squat down as if you were going to sit in a chair, keeping your weight over your heels.
Squeeze your glutes as you return to the start position.
Do 15-20 reps.
As you continue, keep the weight in your heels, making sure your knees do not past forward of your toes.
For a bigger challenge, try it without the weights, jump explosively, and land in the squat position.

Legs
do lots of squats. also do leg lifts on your side and your back (lay on your back and SLOWLY lift you legs up and down, if it doesnt hurt, do it a lot slower. shoot for 25 lifts, if it doesnt hurt, go to 50)

arms
Bicep Exercises
Standing Barbell Curls
1. grab your weight with an underhand grip with feet shoulder width apart
2 . allow the weight to hang in front of you, keeping your elbows close to you at all times.
3. moving only your forearms bring the weight into your shoulders.
4. hold for about 5 seconds and then repeat.
Dumbbell Concentration Curls
1. sit on the end of a bench with your legs spread
2. reach down in between your legs and pick up a light weight with one hand.
3. place your elbow on your knee and make sure your arm is fully straight.
4. place your other hand on your other knee so the upper body has some support.
5. using your forearm only bring the weight to your shoulder and hold for a few seconds.
6. repeat and then switch arms
Triceps exercises
Lying Barbell Extentions
1. lie on a workout bench with feet shoulder length apart on each side.
2. grab the weight and hold it above your head with your arms straight.
3. using your forearms only, lower the weigh until it is about one inch above your forehead.
4.then push the weight back to starting position and then repeat.
Tricep Dumbbell Extensions
1. grab a light weight with one hand with feet shoulder length apart
2. lift the weight so your arms are straight above your head
3. slowly lower the weight behind your head
4. then slowing lift the weight again above your head until your in the starting position.
5. repeat for one set of 10 times and then do the same for the other arm.
Forearm exercises
Barbell Wrist Curls
1. grab a weight with your wrists facing down.
2. sit on a workout bench with your arms resting on your legs and your wrists hanging over the bench.
3. using your forearm strength, curl the weight using only your wrists
4. hold the weight for a few seconds and then slowly lower it to starting position.
5. repeat and do the same with other arm.
Dumbbell Wrist Curls
1. grab a dumbbell and and keep your palms face up.
2. sit on a flat bench and let your forearms rest on your legs.
3. grab the weight and allow your wrists to hang off the bench.
4. using your arms, pull the weight towards your elbows and hold.
5. repeat and do the same for the other arm.

Abs
Try pilates and such. Sadly crunches, dont do sit ups it just makes it worse. Do a think called bikes, lay on your back and rotate your legs like your on a bike (but ur flat on ur back with ur legs bent in the air). To make it more burning for your abs, when your left leg is in towards your body curl up ur abs to touch ur right elbow to your left knee, then switch left elbow to right knee left leg extended. Also you can lay on your back, put your hands under your back (because its hard to keep ur hands down if you dont I guess) then slowly lift both your legs at the same time up and down, not touching the floor. Doesnt burn, go slower, go for 25, if not just keep going.

Good luck!

What is the difference between these types of oils?

Q. My owners manual recommends SAE 10W30 type SH for my Yamaha 125cc, I would like to find out if I can use say 10W40 or 5W40 or 15W50 ect in my bike?

And also what does the type SH stand for?

Thanks for your help

Answer
Ok boys and girls....first off, oil thins out (looses viscosity) as it get hotter. More on that later. There are straight weight oils, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and multi viscosity oils, 10W30 15W50, etc. A straight weight oil is going to be stiff and thich when cold and thinner when hot. A 50 weight oil is going to have a higher viscosity (be thicker) when cold than will a 10 weight, regardless of the oil temperature.

In the good old days when there was nothing but straight weight oils, in zero temps a 50 weight was so stiff the starter couldn't turn the engine over but in 100 degree heat, a 10 weight was thin as water and wouldn't not properly lubricate bearings.

Along came multi-vicsosity oils. A 10W40 was as thin as a 10 weight when cold but as thick as a 40 weight when hot. I think this is where the fellow came up with the idea that oil thickens as it gets hot...well not exactly but close. Multi weight maintain their viscosity as temps increase.

The SH is a gasoline oil rating while diesel oils have a rating starting with C. If you look on the back of the oil jug, you'll see some oils are S only while others have both a S and a C rating and are adequate for either type of engine. The latest oils (SJ I think, too many to remember) are different from earlier ratings since the latest oils have very little zinc in the formulation, which isn't good for old engines with flat tappets as opposed to roller tappets. The zinc provides a strong barrier under high shrear loads...like tappets sliding across the cam lobe.

Normally the only oils you can find are the ones with the latest rating or something like a SA, the really cheap crap you find at discount stores for a buck a quart. DON'T use that stuff except maybe for your lawnmower.

A long time ago (for you guys, 1985) when Chrysler came out with their turbo engines, those engines had a higher oil rating requirement than the non-turboed jobs (SG for turboed vs SF for others I think??). This was necessary because the oil had a very hostile environment to work in when lubricating the super hot, ultra high speed turbo bearings.

You may have a hard time finding a SH oil anymore. I've switched to diesel oils since most of them still have the higher zinc levels (except for the very latest rating, can't remember it's number off hand). I'm using the conventional-synthetic mixes and like them. If you can find a farm store nearby, you shouldn't have any problem at finding an assortment of diesel oils, especially the preferred older rated oils.

Kitchen cleanup question: How to get rubber tire stain out of kitchen floor?

TRex3838 R

Standard linoleum flooring. Neighbor's kid put ground in stain with bike tire. Any suggestions?

Answer
Toothpaste. It's abrasive, but gentler than a Magic Eraser and it should work.

Scrub the spot with toothpaste and a damp cloth. Use circular motions. Then wipe clean with a different damp cloth.

Any toothpaste works as long as it's the typical white toothpaste. Gels do not work.

I would try this first. If this abrasion isn't strong enough, I would first try a plastic dish scrubber. If even that fails, then (and only then) move onto a Magic Eraser or a Brillo pad. But a Magic Eraser or Brillo pad could scratch the linoleum.

Hope this helps.

How do you remove a valve stem from a bycicle tire?

purplelynn

I don't have the tool that removes the valve stem. Is there something else I can use? I am replacing the tubes in my kids bikes and the box says if the valve stem leaks then take it out and clean it and put it back but I can't get the blasted thing out. Grrr. Can someone help with this.

Answer
You're looking for a valve core remover. They're available at any auto parts store.

FWIW, tubes are cheap, and in 40 years of serious riding, I've never had a valve core leak. Replace the tube. Go to a bike shop or order online from Performance or Nashbar. If you're getting your tubes from Wallyworld or Targét, that could be the problem.
-------
Note to Gerry: Slime tubes will seal small leaks, but eventually will seal the valve as well, making it impossible to pump air in the tire. Tried that once, never again.

What bike should I get for my kid?

Ben

This morning I ran over my kids bicycle when I backed out of the driveway. I was thinking about getting him a walmart junk bike but I figured that maybe I should just go out and get him a good one instead. Are there any good aluminum framed BMX bikes for 7 year old kids? His destroyed bike is an 18" walmart Mongoose ship anchor.

Answer
Bike shops are usually the best place to get an entry level bike for any age. Sure the price will be more than a department store, but you will be getting a suitable vehicle as opposed to a disposable toy.

Childrenâs bikes are usually cheep and disposable no matter what. Some BMX companies (freestyle & race) have invested some money into making childrenâs bikes more reliable for performance. Childrenâs mountain bikes have come a long way as well. Expect these bikes to be more expensive than normal childrenâs bikes.

Take him to a bike shop and hook him up with whatever he likes that fits him. At 7 years old a bike is usually a bike. If you have money, buy it. If you donât find something in your price range at the bike shop, check out craigslist. Hook up with a few sellers that are selling something similar to the bike you found at the bike shop. Do some test riding, and low ball the best seller with cash.

If you donât know anything about bikes, take the craigslist bike back to the shop for a solid once over.

I hope this helped!

water pipes freeze, will my idea work...?

todd5524

I rent a half shabby apartment, and the water pipes freeze when it's really cold. I thought about actually buying some of those long foam insulators ( the ones they use on kids bicycle handlebars ) and just work them around the pipes in the basement. I just thought it would be so much easier to apply than regular insulation that gets wet from condensation etc. would it work ?

Answer
It would most likely work, but you have to make sure the hole in the middle of the insulation is the same size as the outer diameter of the pipe. If there is space between the insulation and the pipe, that air will still drop, and potentially allow your pipes to freeze, inside the insulation. Your best bet is to buy the 6' lengths of insulation, at your local hardware store. There are different types, one is scored with a precut line, that you split open, and install around the pipe. This type requires that you use an additional tape to wrap the insulation. The other type is split, with adhesive applied to the edges. Upon installing it on the pipe, you peel the cellophane protector, and the glue from both edges, keeps the insulation in place. These come in different sizes, for different types of pipe. Make sure you buy the correct type for the pipe that you have. When installing this type insulation, cut angles, so you can completely cover all the pipe. Insulating the pipes, and not the joints, will increase the chance of a rupture at the exposed joints. Good luck to you, and stay warm!

How to make eye contact with people if your afraid of people?

motorbikes for children image

beautiful

Well let me first say that I am really awkward and clumy and at times I honesty think in crazy.

I am 13, and I have a fear if talking to people, with exposure therapy I have been able to talk to people more and more but I can't talk without a stutter or hesitation. I have OCD so people stare at me when I do rituals ( blink my eyes hard 5 times, shut the car door 5 times, pick something up and put it down 5 times etc...) and I've been bullied for it. My teacher calls on me in class and asks me questions frequently and I have to answer, that is when I start to break down. I can't make eye contact with him or anyone else and I just freeze. I eventually get the answer out but not without feeling like I'm going to explode⦠any tips. Also I stare at people and space out without even realizing it. And sometimes my teachers pull me aside and ask me if I'm ok (my careers 2 teacher has done it multiple times and he is helping me through all of this) and I have no idea what to say.⦠I've been told that I have a higher IQ that a normal teenage girl. Now in my school I'm considered a "beautiful mind child"

Any help? My guidance therapist beieves that I have aspergers⦠so anyways how can I calm my self and make eye contact?

Answer
There's a good chance you have Asperger's disorder, I myself have this, I'm not sure if you're aware of what it is but I'll give you a brief summary anyway; It basically impairs your ability to socialize, make eye contact, get jokes, sarcasm etc. With this disorder often comes OCD like habits, I have a few 'quirks' myself.

I can't make eye contact because to me it's disturbing, almost like the person is x-raying me or staring into my soul. I talk like a robot, I pace like 3-4 miles a day in deep thought. I can't understand most jokes, can't stand yellow things, takes me all y energy not to go crazy when an ambulance or motorbike passes etc.

Does any of that sound like you? Most with this disorder generally have higher IQs also. I can't talk to people when I need to but I'd rather be by myself for the sake of simplicity, I find that I get on with other people like me quite easily and it's never really awkward.

I'd bet if we met in real life it wouldn't be awkward. All I can suggest is try talking to people more and put yourself in social situations, sit at the center of the class instead of the back corner, things like this make it easier to talk to people I suppose but by answering this question it's really the blind leading the blind because as I said, I'm no social God either.

Lastly, the ''Beautiful Mind Child'' is an amazing way of putting how you are imo, I'd say you're the best kind of different. :)

Take care,

Connor.

Do you need a license to ride a moped, and can you ride them on sidewalks ?

Iron Monke

I would feel nervous riding a motorbike on streets with all the crazy drivers the world has.
I don't even ride my peddle bike in the street.

BONUS QUESTION: What are those scooters that you stand on, and ride called ?

Answer
Of course you can't ride a motor vehicle (or a bicycle) on the sidewalk - what are you, crazy? The sidewalk is for pedestrians. Only children ride bicycles on the sidewalk!

Hey everyone, I would like some ideas for a class project that I am working on. It's for a class that fouses on helping the community and providing assistance to those in need. I want to open the eyes of people on campus and would like some suggestions.

My question is:

How would your survive in Denver with a non-school aged child (age 4 or younger) ?

I've looked up some stats and things like that but would love some creative ideas as well as practical ones.

Thanks so much for your help!

Answer
espeically in our poor economic times, it's important to save, save, and save.

1. Take public transportation, bike, or walk. You save money by not spending it on gas or car insurance. If you do have a car, just try to use it for work purposes only.

2. Look to see if your employer offers daycare. These days, many organizations have day care centers close to or on the job site.

3. Eat out sparingly. Pasta and rice go a long way, it's affordable and filling. Weekly flyers are important, and have many coupons and sales. Just because you are not eating out, doesn't mean you can't have fun! Get your child involved with making dinner. Set up your own table, and pretend you are eating at a restaurant. Imagination is something important, and helps children expand their creativity!

4. Stock up! Don't wait to buy what you need. When there's something on sale, buy it. Things like shampoo, detergent, toothpaste, and even frozen items like meat and fish should be bought on sale and stored for future use.

5. Clothing. If you really don't have any money, go to thrift shops. They usually have stuff in good condition. If your willing to spend more, try bargain hunting. Go to stores like Wal-mart which have resonable prices, or wait for sales. Buy shoes that you needâa pair of sneakers, and dress shoes for interviews. Try to buy seasonal shoes off season (buy boots in the summer, and sandals in the winter when it is half off). Again, try to buy what you need.

6. Housing. There are plenty of apartments for rent that are affordable. Studio apartments usually go for a little cheaper. Sometimes asking coworkers can help a lot, especially if they have friends and family who are looking to rent out an apartment in their house.

7. Electricity, gas, and water. Conserve both! you save our planet, and decrease your bill. Showers should be short, dishes should be washed in loads, and lights shouldn't be used during the day. Use fans instead of ac. During the winter when it is cold, don't turn up the thermostat to 70. Try dressing warmly, with socks and sweatpants.

8. Health and Dental. If you can get one with your job, that would be your best bet. It is important to have a job that offers health and dental insurance. If you don't there are government programs that offer cheap insurance. If you are a single parent with a child, it might be free. But do not go to private practices, who will charge a lot of money.

9. Entertainment. Going out can be expensive. Try setting up "game night" or "movie night." You can get together with some frriends or neighbors and play board games, cards, even charades. For movies, local libraries usually have movies you can borrow.

10. Be positive and hopeful! Just because you are saving, doesn't mean that you are hopeless. Kids feed off of negativity! Always remember that there are people who are worse off than you are.

Hope this helps.

Where is the best place to live in Colorado?

Candy

My husband and I live in Texas and we are considering moving to Colorado in about 2 or 3 years, but where is a good place to raise kids?( We have an 11 and a 7 year old) I'll be an RN, and my husband is a welder, and we want to get involved in outdoor activities like hiking, biking, jogging, white water rafting, and snow boarding..I was thinking Fort Collins. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Answer
It all depends on what you're looking for. Fort Collins is a little bit of a college town, what with CSU. But it's still good. I grew up in littleton, a suburb outside of Denver, and I loved it. The schools are great (best in CO). It's close enough to Denver that you can get into a city, but its not too overwhelmingly close. Highlands Ranch is nice too. Colorado is pretty great in general. Even in the Burbs people are really active. Plus there's the platte. My friends and I used to go tubing every weekend in the summer there. There's also lots of families in Littleton. You might try Golden, too, which is closer to the mountains, but still has really good schools, while not being too far from Denver. Boulder is interesting too, if you're okay with college towns. You also might like the Highlands. It's a very young neighborhood, with lots of people in their late 20's-30's. It's probably the hippest neighborhood in CO, but people still bike a lot there.

Good luck! You'll love Colorado. It's such a great place!

I am buying a choclate labrador from apet shop(reputed one) ....he is saying will take me to the breeder and he is aka or whatever it is registered...will give me my puppy with breed certificate and papers and first vaccination...
Plz tell me what all things I should do before buying it and what all things should I see for...and also I am gonna house train him only(advises needed)
And what is the best lab food available in india..

Answer
A play pen or a puppy pen are really handy as they keep your puppy safe and out of trouble but they still get to be near you.
Of course you will need a collar,
lead (light weight),
lots of toys (only give him access to a couple at a time so he doesnt get bored of them.)
Crate (optional) good for house training and to sleep in. make sure you get one big enough for the grown do and section it off for now.
food and water bowls
Kennel or bed

when buying him you want to see that he is healthy, check his eyes and ears for any problems, feel him all over checking for any lumps or bumps and fleas while seeing if he is happy for his body to be handled.
If he is with other litter mates, see how he acts with them. Is he always the first to eat and start play time etc? then you might have a dominant dog on your hands and have your work cut out for you. Dont assume that if the puppy is sleeping that it will be a calm dog.

For house training, if you have a crate, after a long period of time confined, take him straight out to the desired toilet area and say "go pee!" if your puppy does pee, make sure you give him LOTS of praise. Never punish your dog for peeing inside or rub his face in it for this will only make the problem worse while loosing your dogs trust.
After feeding, sleeping or drinking, always make sure you take your puppy to the toilet area and make sure you go frequently as they can not hold on for long periods (this time will increase as they grow)

You will want to socialize your puppy as soon as you have finished all the puppy vaccs (ask your vet for when this will be) at such a young age, it is a crutial time for them to meet new dogs and people. You want to introduce them to as MANY sights sounds dogs and people as you can a day, try 100 a week. Sights sounds and objects could mean reflections, vacuum cleaners, brooms, lawn mowers, and moving things like cars bikes and skate boards. You want them to meet a variety of people such as young kids to the elderly. You want them to play with all kinds of dogs big and small and you want to take them to as many places as you can so they can be comfortable in the world areound them. Also it can be really helpful if you introduce them to other animals like cats rabbits and maybe even horses or cows.

You will also want to do some basic obedience like learning sit, lay down, wait, no, stay etc and this can be taught as soo as you get it. look up videos on how to teach these if you dont know.

Good luck :)

What do you think is going to happen to humans in the future?

purple.

Consider all aspects... Climate (global warming), population increase, crashing economy, increased illnesses (such as Cancer), pollution, war, and crime rate.

I just want to know others opinions.

How can we change? What scares you most? When do you think the worst will start to happen?

Answer
Climate Change(global warming):
First of all, there is no solid evidence if global warming is human induced, so we might not be able to anything about it. Like how our economy works in cycles, the Earth's climate apparently also follows a cycle, just like how we had our last Ice age, there were many before it, each with different lengths in time. Of course, there is no doubt we're doing things to mother Earth that could speed up the process, but to what degree is still a big and unsolved question. Fighting climate change is a global effort- a small hole on the bottom of a water bottle will discharge all of its content, we cannot have some nations doing it and others destroying it.What scares me the most is that I probably won't live to see Ice Age, just kidding. I am not really scared of global warming myself, I am scared for our future generations that will be dealing with it. I'm not an expert in climatology(Is that even a word?) It isn't completely hopeless, now that humans can control the climate through advance technology.

Population Increase:
If you're in a developed nation, I don't think there is need for change, as there is a trend in having less kids, and educated people generally know not to have too many kids, because they understand the burden behind it. We are already seeing some countries across Europe with declining population. I don't think we need a one-child policy all over the world, not because it's kinda anti-democracy, but because education is a power tool. If you're in a third world nation, without adequate sanitary condition and health care, then yes, what we can do is providing better education overall. I enjoy hiking and biking, and those two things, to me, are more enjoyable in areas where there are less people, not commercialized, and in a natural environment. A huge population could bring more pollution, and less all natural environment. I'm scared one day the favorite mountain I loved to climb is developed into a community with many houses on top of it. It's already bad enough in places like China and India, and also in parts of Latin America countries, I cannot imagine any worse than that. But I think human's roach-like survivability will somehow deal with the issue, like how Japan dealt with theirs.

Crashing Economy:
Unfortunately, there is no simple solution in solving a crashing economy, and what we can do to change it also depends on many factors. My suggestion is, live frugal, plan for retirement, get into saving habits, and don't be wasteful. Anyone would be scared to get laid off, especially when you have a loan to pay. For me, I'm scared I can't get a job when I get out of grad school. Due to my lack of knowledge on the economy, I have no proof that my gut feeling this wave of economic crisis is far from over, although some experts are already standing out to say there will be a second wave of financial crisis. We shall see how 2009 fares.

Increased Illnesses(Cancer):
Besides living a healthier lifestyle- eat regularly and normally, exercise, don't smoke and do drugs, sleep well, be happy, and etc, there is really nothing we can do except at the mercy of the businesses that provide us with safe and harmless products.
What scares you most? I'm a optimistic person, so I'm not really scared of (the usual)deadly illnesses such as cancer, it's a price we pay for being so dependent on technology. I can't say I'm not scared of death, I mean, who wouldn't? Modern medical practices are getting more advanced by the day, perhaps one day we really can develop a cure for cancer, as we ha

How do you home school without workbooks?

Curious to hear from families who are homeschooling but do not use workbooks as a means of their curriculum. I don't know if this is completely possible, thinking at some point kids would be doing some kind of worksheets. What other methods of curriculum or teaching to you use? Just looking for alternative methods to keep my kids from being bored or feeling like they are back in public school where they have been unchallenged and frustrated. Thanks for the tips in advance.

Answer
There are lots of options.

Field trips. Go to museums, zoos, historical sites, and other places. Go on nature walks and explore. Wherever you go, even just on simple errands, point out things of interest and ask questions to get them thinking, answer their questions (or work on researching the answers together). If you can find a local homeschool support group (try on Yahoo! Groups), they'll likely have a variety of field trip options to consider, if you want company on these trips.

Videos. Watch educational videos, DVDs, U-Tube or other online sources. There are lots of great educational programs.

Games. Board games, video games, online games. There are many educational games that you can buy or make.

Hands-on. Build something. Use a science kit. Make a model. Construct something from wood, or fabric, or whatever. Use written directions. Show them how to use the tools and fix errors. Cook something. Learn a hobby. You'd be amazed at how much kids can learn through projects of different sorts.

Library and other books. Why do you need worksheets? Without using a single worksheet the kids can learn a lot. We read through a lot of ordinary books. The nonfiction section of the library has great science and history books that can be read and discussed, or they can draw pictures or write something to explain what was just read to them. Or read literature--either on their own, or read it aloud and talk about it as you go along.

Classes. Try signing up for some classes through a local recreation center, community center, private company, museum, or homeschool support group. We've taken classes on martial arts, knitting and crocheting, swimming, human anatomy building a model of the body with organs from paper, drama, and more. We've used 4-H materials for practically free courses on sewing and bicycle safety. We know other homeschoolers who've taken gardening classes, gymnastics, art, dance, and much more. If you search long enough, you'll likely find options in your community.

Use your kids' interests, too. When my son was really interested in Legos, I found ways to use Legos to teach about physics. I found directions online for building a variety of machines, after I'd read to him about some basic physics concepts. Science was much more interesting when it involved his favorite toy.

Car schooling. We listen to tapes or CDs in the car going places. The kids can use flashcards or quiz each other, and we have some great educational conversations in the car.

Fun. Don't forget that visiting a park, or the beach, or a ball game can be considered PE. Visiting a Renaissance Festival or a battle reenactment can count as history. Look for fun things going on in the community and throw them into your homeschooling somewhere.

how do you stop brake pads from sqeaking on a bicycle?

crazybiker

I have a brand new road bike, and after i changed the tube after a flat, the brakes started sqeaking. I thought it might be the angle that the brake pad[s] was hitting the rim, but i con't seem to fix it.

Answer
WD-40? Are you kidding? Do not use WD-40 on any parts of your bike. (WD: Water Displacer. You do not want water displacement on your bike)

Since you said you have a road bike, im assuming you use rim brakes and not disc brakes. In this case, brakes will always squeak to some extent. When the pads are worn in and there is some of the pad's material on the rim, the squeak will stop unless you break very hard, enough to skid. The squeak occurs when the cantilever brakes are not strong enough to completely stop the rim, but are in contact with the rim. They rub and create this noise. When they are rubbing on bare metal instead of metal with a thin layer of pad material, they will make more noise.

Also, you will want to keep your rims and pads dry. Dry the rims after every ride, and do not lock the brakes when the bike isn't in use. If you ride through a puddle, it could have traces of oil or gasoline in it. Therefore, after every wet ride, dab a paper towel with isopropyl alcohol and rub it onto the rims, both sides. This removes the oil.

Good luck,
Adam

super g

also can you compare how the issues of today compare to the issues of earlier times? many thanks!

Answer
Government intervention - Rules - Regulations.

Here is a list of some - can you add more to the list.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED - THE 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70.s

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant..

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered
With bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes,

We had baseball caps. Not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.

Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't over weight. WHY?
Because we were always outside playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on..

No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were OKAY.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps
And then ride them down the hill,
Only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem

We did not have Play stations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's,
No surround-sound or CD's,
No cell phones,
No personal computers,
No Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We would get spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping pong paddles, or just a bare hand and no one would call child services to report abuse.

We played in the dirt and made mud pieâs.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best
Risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

If YOU are one of them, CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

Share this with your kids, so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.

DeeJay.

Anyone have a bicycle seat for baby that you love?

RearFace@1

I would love to get one for my 13 month old for this summer. Have the breeze in our hair and great exercise and freshness...I want the best for a good price, no more than $60 give or take. I am not sure what to look for. Any ideas or advice? I don't mind shopping online either, but I am not sure where to go and Google is just killin me today.

Also, a baby helmet too...?

Answer
I have absolutely no advice about what brand to get, I'm sorry. If you have a large sporting goods store near you that may be worth looking at. Chances are they would have some.

Mostly I'm just wanting to answer saying that I love the idea of a bicycle seat rather than a trailer. Everyone says that if you fall baby falls too, which is going to happen with a seat or a trailer. With a seat the baby is strapped in and protected on three sides like with a car seat. I'm more paranoid with the trailers. They make the bike longer, which means that you have more of an opportunity for a car or another bike to hit the trailer if they aren't paying attention. Plus if you fall on the bike the trailer is going to tip too, and often kids aren't as secured in them as they would be in a seat.

Here are two that I found on amazon. I think both look great, but for a younger toddler I would go with the one that has head support. The front mounted one looks like it would have better stability for the rest of the bike, but it looks a bit scary.
Good luck!

What kinda bicycle should i buy and what is a one speed bicycle?

kids bike v brakes image

SkyFox

what is the benefit of a one speed bike over a multi-speed bike. i live in the city and would make a daily commute to and from downtown( about three miles round trip), but i would like to take the kids on some trails on the weekends, what kinda bike should i consider, rigid frame, dual suspension, what about brakes? Disk brakes or traditional?

Answer
The only benefit of a one speed bike is low cost and easy to maintain. If you want to ride trails you want gears. You want a hard tail bike with V brakes, a decent full suspension bike starts at $1,000.
If you want to just ride around town and smooth bike paths a comfort or hybrid bike would be better. Visit the local bike shop, they can help you with the right bike and the right size. Bikes come in different sizes so they are more comfortable to ride. Stay away from Walmart and other department store bikes.

What kind of bike do i need for a hilly neighborhood?

Iam Cherry

I live in a neighborhood with a lot of different sizes of hills (small, steelp, in between) and i want to get a biike that is good for just riding around the neighborhood and can go up and down the hills. i also prefer a bike with brakes on the handles. as for gears, i know nothing about( where they are, what its used for, or what they even do and if it will serve any kind of purpose to me) im not a PRO biker and im not trying to be and i dont plan on riding every single day ( maybe 3-4 times a week). i just want to ride it to simply travel around the neighborhood. the sidewalks are really smooth as well if that helps. and theres a lot of turns. so based on all thaat, what kind of bike should i get?

Answer
Number 1 rule...stay OFF sidewalks! Sidewalks are for pedestrians. Streets are for "VEHICLES" - such as the bicycle. Little kids learn how to ride on sidewalks. R U still a little kid? In many parts of the country it's highly ILLEGAL to ride on sidewalks, i.e. Chicago, Manhattan Borough of New York, any business district in St. Louis, etc.

You NEED something like a hybrid or pure road bike. As you are a newbie, I'd go with a hybrid. Bicycle gears are EASY to comprehend. On a typical 21 or 24 speed bike, you have a triple crankset up front & either 7 or 8 gears on the rear cog.

1st gear up front is used for uphill climbs & slow conditions. On the rear, use ONLY gears 1 through 4 while in 1st gear up front.

2nd gear up front is the one most used for flat terrain & rolling hills. Use any of the 7 rear gears. Or on an 8 speed cassette - use gears 2 through 7.

3rd gear up front is for very fast or downhill conditions. Use ONLY gears 4 through 7 on a 7 speed cog & only gears 5 through 8 on an 8 speed cassette.

Why? This prevents "cross chaining" the bike - putting too much lateral (side-to-side) stress on the chain, gears & derailleurs.

G.T.A.B.S. Means Go To A Bicycle Shop - where test riding a bike before the sale is both FREE & ENCOURAGED. Avoid discount stores at all cost. Minimum wage "associates" who know nothing & can't even assemble a bike correctly. Start looking at bikes like a Raleigh Cadent FT1 (man) or an Alysa FT1 (woman).
http://www.raleighusa.com/bikes/fitness/cadent-ft1-13/
http://www.raleighusa.com/bikes/fitness/alysa-ft1-13/

Add a rear rack & either a trunk bag or panniers (saddle bags) and you have a nice "commuter bicycle". http://s382.photobucket.com/user/OldHippie_01/media/2013%20Raleigh%20Cadent%20FT1/100_0364.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0

Q. I don't even know where to begin for mine! :) Ideas? They are two years old and 4 months old.
I'd love to go to Disney World :) I wish we could.

Answer
I have no idea what to get my girls, I hate for it to sound like theyre *spoiled* by saying they have everything they want and need right now but its true! I cant even think about keeping up with more toys! My oldest wants this Barbie and horse she saw on TV, the horse walks and wags its tail or something. Other then that I havent heard a request. I think I might get her her first bike. And then of course a helmet and knee/elbow pads. I need ideas lol. Oh and they will of course get new coats.

Do your kids wear bike helmets?

Jessica

I bought my son his first "real bike" today....and along with it i bought a helmet, which also came with knee and elbow pads. I plan on him wearing the helmet and at least knee pads...maybe not the elbows...his dad says this will make him a "sissy", and that boys shouldnt wear helmets. My son is 4, im not about to trust him to be 100% safe on a bike, and as close of an eye as i keep on him, we all know it only takes 1 second for something to happen...is it uncommon now a days to wear one? Is it "uncool"? Do your kids wear one? Why or why not? Thanks!

Answer
Okay, he's FOUR. I would not ever let my child (four or any age), (Girl or boy) on a bike without a helmet. A four year old is not a pro biker. He's going to fall and scrape his knees and hands, and get himself hurt a bunch of times. But if he's not wearing a helmet, he can fall on his head and either bust it wide open and end up in the emergancy room or end up dead over it. Any parent will make their children wear a helmet, unless they just don't care what happens to them. No, wearing a helmet will not make him a "sissy", it will save his LIFE. That's just as ignorant as saying "boys shouldn't ride motorcycles with helmets, because it makes them 'sissys'". If it does, I would rather have a "sissy" son than a "dead" son.
Explain that to his dad.

does anyone here take your baby out for a ride in bike on a carrier seat and not the trailer?

kids bike seat weight limit image

2late2be

i just think that he'll enjoy the ride better in a carrier seat than in a trailer, he's 15 mo. by the way...

Answer
Back in the dear, dead, days of my youth, I carried my daughter around in a carrier seat.

As others have mentioned, a carrier puts your childs weight up high and has a tendancy to overbalance the bicycle. I never really noticed this as an issue once I was mounted and moving, but it was a problem trying to get her into the seat and settled. Generally, my wife and I found it a two person job. One person held the bike and the other got my daughter strapped in.

If you have ever ridder on the back seat of a tandem, you also know the frontal view is pretty limited. About all your baby will see is your back.

My little sister has a bike trailer. Her two kids seem to really enjoy riding in it.

Unlike a carrier, the kids have a great view forward and to the sides.

Being low down and having a low center of gravity, trailers are very stable.

While a trailer is somewhat heavier to pull about and bulky to store, it is a one person operation getting your kid comfortably situated.

Most trailers can be completely closed up to keep your child more comfortable.

Carriers, at least the one we had, are a real chore to put on and take off. For the most part, you install it and leave it there until the kid is too large. On the other hand, a trailer just clamps to the bike and is really simple to attach and detach. This also makes it easy to let someone else pull the trailer when you get tired.

Finally, at least for the carrier we had, there is a pretty definite size limit. After that, if you want to keep riding with your kid, you are likely to need a trailer until the kid is big enough for a tag-along.

Beleive it not, I am not really opposed to a carrier, but I really think trailers are better in most aspects.

Hope this helps.

Best starter-ish motorcycle for a girl?

Noir Cur

I'm 16 (almost 17) and I've been saving up to buy my own motorcycle for a while now. I've wanted one ever since I was 14. I like sport bikes, the really cool stretched out ones. But mostly I'm interested in the Kawasaki Ninjas. I've been researching and a lot of people tell me that I should just skip the 250R and go right for the 650R. I've also been looking at the 300 and the 500R. The thing is though, is that I'm really short, about 5'2 in height and 135 lbs D: so I don't know if I'd be able to touch the ground when I get on.

Anyways, what do you recommened? I like Suzuki's, Kawasaki's, & some Honda's.

It has to be sport, no cruisers - I just don't really like them.

Answer
The Ninjas, except the ZX ones, are not sportbikes, they're standards. They're certainly sporty enough for a beginner, and easier to learn and ride than a real sportbike. Real sportbikes are single-purpose, standards are general purpose. A Ninja 500 or 650 would be a lot easier to ride, a lot more comfortable on a long trip, just better for all-around use.

Now a lot of people here insist you should learn on a 250 (and lately the Ninja 250 was bumped up to 300cc). But the 500 and 650cc Ninjas are only marginally bigger/heavier than the 250 or 300, maybe 50 lbs heavier, which is not much. And they're able to cruise at highway speeds, which the 250 and 300 can't really do. So I guess it depends a lot on how you see yourself riding. If you plan to ride just around town, maybe out of town on secondary roads, a 250 or 300 is all you will ever need. And they can do 10 miles on the highway, though they're not ideal.

I would say a 500 or 650 wouldn't have 'too much power'. If you ride like a grownup, you only use the power you need, and it's nice to have some in reserve when you want to pass someone. Young boys suffer from what I call 'testosterone poisoning', they take stupid chances. But girls are more level-headed, and everyone knows they mature faster, right? 8^) In fact, motorcycling is not about strength or weight, it's about balance and finesse, so I think ladies have some advantages!

The other thing is your height. You want to be able to sit on a bike with both feet flat on the ground, and for someone 'inseam challenged' like you, this can limit the selection somewhat. They publish seat heights in the specs, but the seats are all shaped differently so the only way to really tell if you can 'flatfoot' a bike is to find one and sit on it. If you can't touch the ground, then you ought to look at a small cruiser, because they have lower seats. Cruisers are also good for all-around general use, and they have some advantages for new riders.

Back to the 250. Honda has a newish 250 called the CBR 250. The larger CBRs are dedicated sportbikes but the 250 is a standard, a trainer, competing directly with the Ninja 250/300. But the CBR has that low-handlebars seating position so it feels a lot sportier. Now me, I'm older, I'm old enough to be your . . uh . . . your older brother. I find that 'sporty' position very uncomfortable. It puts a lot of stress on your wrists and lower back. If I ride one of these bikes more than about 20 min., it better be to the chiropractor's office. 8^) But it doesn't seem to bother young kids so much. So you might consider that model, if you want a 250.

My (strong) advice is to learn on a used bike. Check out your local Craigslist.

Where can I find a cheap bike tune up in Chicago?

orwellian9

I ride for excercise, but soon I'm going to start riding a couple miles a day for transportation purposes. As such, I want my bike safe and ready to handle the Chicago winter.

Places Like Kozy's and Village seem to be huge ripoffs to me (inexpierienced kids working there, crazy prices). I want to do this as cheap as possible (it seems to me most would be capable of the service I want to do)...

True wheels

Adjust brakes and shifting

New tubes (I'm losing about 40 PSI per week--I am heavy, so I don't know if this should be)

General road worthiness maintenance

Get the squeek out of my steering.

and the springs in my comfort seat are getting a little soft, I'd like something done if possible.

Let me know how much something like this should cost and where I should get it done (also, how not to get screwed over).

Answer
A general tune-up would include brakes, shifting, and checking all the bolts to make sure everything is properly tightened. Expect to pay 30-40 bucks for that.

Truing wheels will run you another 20-30 bucks.

Your squeeky steering might be fixed by the general tune, but it could mean that your headset would need to be serviced. Expect 20 bucks or so for that.

New tubes, 5 bucks each, plus labor of another 5-10 bucks.

Together you are looking at 100 or so dollars. That does not include any parts that need to be replaced, specifically brake and shift cables and housing, or anything with your seat.

I know that may seem like a lot, but generally it is necessary to have your bike in optimal condition. If your bike is already working fine, there usually isn't a need to do any drastic overhauling, maybe just the general tune to make sure nothing is loose.

You can always save money by doing things yourself. You should at least learn how to change your own tire. It is very easy to learn and may save you a long walk someday. Also, while I don't know of any specific locations, you may be able to find some general bike maintenance classes so you can do the work yourself. Or just find somebody you know that knows how to work on a bike and pay them with beer!! :)

How do i put on a 1979 harley davidson spring seat?

dietzc2000

Answer
The bike in this picture has a spring solo seat and it is a 1979 sporty. All I had to do it change the frame. Just kidding. If you bought the 30 dollar ebay special, you may have to ditch the bracket in the front and look for one that is the diameter of your frame. As far as the rear goes, you'll have to drill holes for your bolts to holt on the springs. If your backbone doesn't have a big decline, then you'll need larger springs so the center of the seat won't hit. If you don't have the frame geometry to do this, then you'll have to get some custom brackets made.

I have been trying to find out if it is against the law to use profanity in Oregon around children?

Lacy

My son goes to the skatepark by our house, and the high school boys have been using every cuss word in the book around him, and directly to him. They threaten him, and I am worried. I have considered not letting him go anymore, but he truly loves riding his bmx bike and razor scooter there. I want to know if there is a law against using the language that they use around the younger kids. I live in Oregon.

Answer
If its against the law to say profanity around minors? would that help your situation? The word Bitch can mean female dog and the word Dick can be someones name (excuse me if I offended anyone). Its not enough cause to stop from high school kids from bullying your son. Are you with him while this is happening? if not maybe you should pay a visit and stay with him. These kids may not have anything to do or go and find your son an easy target.Take a video camera and record him, possibly be a lil sneaky and tape the boys you suspect in bullying your son without them knowing or realizing it.
Although make your presence known don't be intimidated but also you shouldn't be rude, kids learn by example. If your son is uncomfortable with this idea then you need to tell him to stay home if you don't wish for him to get bullied or worse. This I say since I'm not sure how the neighborhood is like on your end.
I really cant imagine my kids not being able to enjoy the park. I hope this is short lived and resolved quickly, till then keep him company while he skates and don't leave him alone, you can be discreet about it by sitting a few feet away and taking a book and "pretending" to read.

Our neighborhood has half old ppl, and some young kids and young families. Me and my friends Claudia and Danielle never have anything to do. Any ideas?

Answer
There are a fair few products on the market that help to reduce barking.

You can try those citronella collar thats spray a puff of citronella mist into its face when it barks.

Likewise, there are also water collars that spray a jet of water instead if some owners feel that the citronella may irritate the dog's sense of smell.

However, I find the "Good Neighbour Bark Breaker" to be more effective and less invasive (imagine having water or liquid sprayed at your face!). What it does is that it emits a high pitch sound everytime your dog barks. It has a rather large effective range, so you can also use it on your neighbour's dog if it keeps barking! (hence the name, Good Neighbour)

It is more of a behaviour modification device than a punishment device.

P.S. Dont forget, a tired dog is a happy dog! So tired it out by playing games or walking it often and it will happily snooze the rest of the day out without bothering others.

Please be serious don't make anorexia jokes.

I really need help with this.

Thanks!

PS- Would jogging, bicycle riding, swimming, yoga, etc. help?
And how much of each should I be doing and how regularly?

Answer
Lots of exercises make people bulk up. If you want long lean muscles (you need muscle to live, just not short stocky huge ones) you need to do Pilates and/or yoga.

Pilates makes long lean muscles like Cameron Diaz has, or Madonna. At any weight you don't want to be jiggly or literally skin and bones because it is NOT going to keep you alive. And whatever reason you want to be stick thin, you need to survive.

I'm guessing you will believe me that Cameron Diaz looks great and is NOT fat.. nor is she anorexic. So, with that given, start with Pilates as your main exercise, add in Yoga if you can but you MUST do Pilates if you want the Long muscles that will provide the look you are seeking. Eat a very MINIMUM of 1200 calories a day, that's if you're short (think 5'1") if you're taller you need more like 1500/day and these numbers will make you lose a ton of weight. Please remember to eat. If you don't your metabolism will freak out and try to store every calorie it gets and you will get FAT by not eating. I'm not kidding, it happens. You need 2 things: 1. Exercise and 2. a Good Metabolism.

Your metabolism will tank if you don't eat at least the minimums I stated earlier.

Why do parents buy their kids motorized scooters and bikes? SHould younger kids need exercise?

Sabastien

When I was young, I had a bicycle; skip-its; hoola-hoops; played sports; did a paper route.

Why do parents let their kids have motorized scooters and sit on the computer all day, nowadays?

More exercise when they're young means a more lively lifestyle in the future.

I'm not planning on it for my kids. I bought my daughter a tricycle.

We live in the Missouri Ozarks and have 5 children ages 9, 11, 12, and two 14 year olds. Our favorite place to take our family is Alley Springs campground on the Jacks Fork river. It is about 6 miles west of Eminence. It offers plenty of sites, some with electric, hot showers, flat level sites with paved roads for bike riding, and a good swimming hole. About 1/2 mile away is the Alley Springs Mill and spring with two hiking trails, one that goes around the spring area, and then a more difficult one that goes up to a lookout that is above the spring. It is a beautiful place. Hope this helps!

How to get kids in shape for x-country ski season?

Frankie

My kids are considering cross country ski races next year, but just getting into it this year. They are taking beginning lessons now at the course where the Junior Nationals will be held in spring, so they are excited about that. My daughter is almost 8 and son is 10. What sort of things should they do over summer? What sort of games and exercises would be helpful? How to make it more fun so they don't get burned out?

Answer
First, place restrictions on their use of phones, tv, computer and the like. This will direct their focus to more physical activities, and they will train themselves. I recently attended an athletic training seminar, and one of the topics was training pre-teen athletes. The general consensus seems to be- don't. These young athletes' bodies are still developing, and by directing them to a more active lifestyle, they will keep fit by simply doing what kids do best- running, jumping, skipping, climbing trees, riding their bikes, etc.

Diet and rest are also important. Make sure they have a healthy diet, and limit their intake of processed foods. Let their body clocks dictate sleep and rest periods, when a child is tired, let them rest.

What kind of bikes are popular with 11-12 year old boys these days?

Nancy

I'm particularly interested in kids in CA and other Western states, and
"everyday" kinds of bikes that boys would be riding to school, etc.
Thanks!

Answer
well id say road bicycles are popular in california, or well atleast comparing to the united states. however they are so dang expensive to were you really can't leave them anywere, not even with a bike lock.

Now mountain bike I would say be best... ya got a bunch of trails and mountains that us people on the east coast would sacrafice a person in order to have those mountains/trails... and in general mountain bikes are usually able to take beatings and they're all not super expensive like road bicycles. And if he is going to be on pavement/sidewalk ya can always go into a bike shop and ask for "slick" tires, which doesn't have the mud tire grips on the tires. this will help the bike roll faster on sidewalk/road conditions. there are even some hybrid version tires out there ya can buy.

then a mountain bike is also able to do a variety of tricks as well so ya can even treat it like a bmx bike too in some ways :-p
