Q. I like the Easy Bake Oven and the Magna Doodle.

Answer
Barbie, etch a sketch, Puffalumps, Pound puppies, My little Pony, slinky, pogo ball, My buddy and Kid Sister dolls, Care bears, Cabbage patch kids, play-doh, Strawberry Shortcake, pick-up sticks, Legos, connect four, hoola hoop, Teddy Ruxpin, A realistic doll that I named Ashley, which was my favorite doll of all time- My brothers ended up shooting her with a bb gun, and her face shattered. It was such a violent end to such a loved doll. I also had lots of stuffed animals that my brothers would body slam when they were pretending to be Hulk Hogan or the Ultimate Warrior, and I used to love mad libs. They were always hilarious. Almost made me pee my pants a couple times. I also had a pink and white bike with a banana seat with a picture of a horse on the side that my dad had drawn. and my friend had a Kricket doll and a Barbie dream house with an elevator, and a Barbie Jeep, and a fake kitchen stocked with fake food and pots and pans and dishes, and also a tea set -- all of which I coveted.

What is the most comfortable men's sandal?

looking fo

I have a few pairs of men's sandals, but it's time to buy a couple news pairs. I want your opinions on what are the most comfortable and the best price.

Also if you have any good recommendations on where to buy them.

(I've found good deals at Nordstrom Rack and Ross.)

Both for casual and more upscale.

For casual I have a pair of speedo sandals that are great. I've had a pair of Adidas and Nike that we not as comfortable, but I know there are many different sandals of each brand.

For more dressy sandals (ones I can wear to my office, I can't wear Nike or something and still look professional), I have 2 pairs of Kenneth Cole. They're okay. They look nice and they're somewhat comfortable, but I would have preferred Cole Haan. The difference was, the Kenneth Cole's were on sale and 1/3 the price. I couldn't justify paying 3x as much for th Cole Haan's.

I'm looking forward to your answers.

Thanks.

Answer
The most comfortable sandal that I have ever worn is a Keen. They come in both men's and women's styles, are very durable and you can wear them anywhere -- hiking, biking... I am a teacher and I walk around all day. Keens don't hurt my feet. They give me the support I need and the cushion to walk on cement floors chasing kids... They come in a variety of styles from really casual to more dressy. They can be a little pricey but it is well worth the investment.
You can buy them at REI or on the web.

The bike is new only a couple months old,I have no tools and the neighbor is always putting it back on. Is their a way to keep it on?
Its a cheap walmart bike.

Answer
Try to take it back to WalMart and see if they can fix it. If not, get your money back. The rear wheel needs to be straight so that the cog is aligned with the chain ring and tensioned tight enough to hold the chain in place but not so tight as to damage the chain.

Without tools, you can't fix this yourself.

What is the best gear to be in when you are going up hills?

Enigma

Me and my bf bought mountain bikes from Walmart. (Mongoose) I used to be in a biking club about 11 years ago but that was on a road bike, and my skills apparently have declined greatly. I couldn't make it up a faiir sized hill at all and I want to know if I should get a better bike and until then, what gear should I be in to make it up the hill. I feel discouraged right now.

Answer
Welcome back to cycling. Don't feel too bad, after 11 years, even for those of us who ride all the time our skill have probably diminished, we just don't notice as much until some 18y old kid on a old Schwinn Paramont blows by your fancy-smancy carbon-fiber rig... well that is a story for another day.

I'm just going to go ahead and assume you know all about shifting and big gears/little gears etc and skip right to some thoughts.

A mountain bike from Walmart is probably a gosh-awful heavy bestie to pedal up anything. There is little you can do about that right now. If you are used to road bikes the first time you clip into a mountain bike and encounter a big hill the instinct is to power up it like on the road. However, if you are on dirt or single-track on the mountain bike this really is the wrong approach and it is best to stay in the saddle and choose a very easy gear and patiently spin your way up the grade. The keeps your rear wheel from slipping in the dirt. Don't be afraid of the triple chain ring and drop to the smallest ring before the grade so you are not shifting rings on the hill, but concentrate on spinning through on the very small gears of the mountain bike (that is what they are there for after all!).

Are cheap bike helmets safe?

I haven't bought a bike helmet in years, but I recently went to Target to pick one up for my 3 yr old son and was surprised to see that the helmets were just $8-$15 for kids. I remember paying $50 or so for mine when I bought it in a bike shop years ago. Are these cheap helmets safe?

They do have a CPSC sticker. They don't have a Snell sticker, which I recall was the standard a while back.

Answer
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) bike helmet standard is required by law in the US. Some of the Snell Memorial Foundation standards (plural - Snell has multiple standards) are a bit more difficult to pass, but are not often used.

There are some great articles out there that explain the standards and what goes into the testing and certification of helmets:

http://www.helmets.org/#standards

A helmet sold at a Target is cheaper due to several factors. One, because those helmets are pretty basic. Foam, with a taped on shell - that's a pretty inexpensive production process. Two, in most cases, the manufacturers don't even change the helmet molds from year to year - just the graphics. That way, tooling costs are reduced. Three, because there's a much bigger market for the product. Just think of the sheer number of people who patronize the big box stores versus your local bike shop. The big box folks order exponentially more than your LBS, and so their savings get passed on to the consumer. There are a lot of deals made between the manufacturers and the stores - and that's done just to get the shelf space and to get their product into the stores.

The price of a helmet isn't generally a good indicator of how good a helmet will do its job of protecting in the event of an impact (note that no helmet will ever fully prevent injury), save for the really high end helmets. That's what the standards and testing are for.

Higher prices usally are the result of what goes into the production of the helmet, R & D, etcetera.

You take a helmet like the Giro Atmos (MSRP $189.99), and you have a lot of things that go into it. An in-molded (fused, versus taped on) microshell. Two carbon fiber plates to strengthen and reduce the weight of the helmet. An internal rib cage in the foam that acts much like rebar. An additional rentention device (Roc-Loc) that helps with the overall fit. All the while maintaining very minimal weight and maximum ventilation.

I could go on and on, but I think you get my point.

BMX GIrL <3?

sweettart

IM 13 years old and I think it would be really fun to do bmx. I was wondering what kind of bike I should get and what size. I weigh 102 pounds and Im 5 foot 2. I want to eventually get into competition riding but for now I just need to practice. Also, do you have any tips?? thx <3

Answer
Look around for a local bike shop that sells BMX bikes. Do not buy a bike from Wal-Mart, Target, or any other big box store. The bike shop will have staff who know about the best bike for you. They will also be able to tell you about the local racing scene.

Depending on where you live there is probably a track somewhere nearby with regular races and practices. Other than the bike, you'll need an approved BMX helmet but that's it. You have to wear a long sleeve shirt and long pants but you don't need special clothes if you're just starting out.

I guarantee there are tons of kids your age doing BMX. Once you find them you'll have plenty of chances to learn, practice, and race.

Good luck and have fun!

How much should I charge for a 3 - 4 year old kids bike?

I just bought a bike for my 12 and 13 year old. I have one bike I'm going to sell, but I don't know how much to charge them. Also I just bought a new camera and now running low on some cash. I need to buy a new set of golf clubs for my 12 year old too.

Answer
It would depend a lot on how much you spent. If it was an inexpensive bike, possibly bought at a department store, you might be better off donating it to good will or to the Yellow Bike Project and taking it off on your income tax. A bike that old will not bring much in return. If it was more of a high-end bike, you may get something for it, but again things have changed so much in that time, probably not very much.

If it is a high-end bike, you might go by a local bike shop and ask them.

If you really want a price, I would guess you could not get ore than $10 or $15. You might get a bit more if it is in good condition.

How to keep a 4 year old busy?

.

What are some activities to do with a 4 year old boy to keep him from getting bored? Note I live in a tropical area and it's Summer now for us.

Answer
Ah, been there, done that. I babysit a lot, and kids between the ages of about 4 - 8 are always the most difficult to keep busy.

Well, for me, I say go outside as much as possible. Sprinklers, water guns, sidewalk-chalk, bikes, sports, tag, hide&seek, anything and everything active. Plus, it'll tire him out and will hopefully have him wanting some down time after a few hours of constant activity. Take him to the park or a local discovery house, if you have one. If you're stuck at home or it's bad weather out -- coloring / painting, simple board games, story books, or just getting out some of his favorite toys (perhaps trains or action figures) are a few things I always do. Movies (especially Disney ones) can be a lifesaver at times, too, and will keep him occupied for quite a while.

Are there any kids nearby that are his age that you could have over for him to play with? I've noticed when they have a playmate, they're very occupied with just the imagination between the two of them. I babysat brothers over the summer who were 8 & 6 and they would be busy for hours just making up games together; and I babysat a nine year old girl who was always easily bored, but suddenly had plenty to do when she had a friend her age over. Just an idea.

Good luck!
:D

How much is assembly for a kids bike at Wal-Mart?

Q. It'll be a little bike for a 2 year old.
I called the Wal-Mart since it'll be site to store & they do assemble. They have people to assemble them. But I forgot to ask when how much when I called & it's a long distance call so I'm trying to avoid having to call a second time.

Answer
Walmart does not charge for bicycle assembly. If you order site to store shipping call them when you get the notice that it is there and ask to have it assembled otherwise you will get it a box.

What do you think of the Baby Trend brand stroller/car seat travel system?

wonderingi

Particularly the "Venture" style. And, did anyone order it direct from the website? If so, where can you take it if there is a problem?

Answer
Love the stroller, hate the car seat, would never buy the travel system.

You can try out the strollers or at least some of the models at Target and Toys R Us/Babies R Us. I love them, they're comfortable for my kids, easy to maneuver, easy to go through sand, dirt, grass, whatever, and I haven't tried out a nicer stroller. I love the large wheels that are bicycle wheels so that it's easy to fix them and for them to go over obstacles. :)

However, I don't like the car seat because you can try them at Target as well, and you have to put the two hooks together then push them into the seat-belt latch, and when working with a restless baby that would be a nightmare. Graco and other infant seats let you push in one side then the other, which makes it a lot easier when you're working with a restless baby.

I also don't like people putting the baby in a car seat outside of the car. It makes the car seat at risk for knocking against things and becoming damaged, as well as it curves the baby. SIDS research says over and over that we need to lay the baby flat or be carrying the baby, and research has proven that while car seats save their lives in an accident you should limit their time in a car seat (or anything that tilts them) to less than 3 hours in a day and no more than 1 hour at a time, and basically not use it in anything but the car.

So the stroller is nice, get the stroller, but order it through something like Target or Walmart's or babies r us so that you can take it there if there's a problem. Skip the car seat, get one that is better and will work better. Carry the baby for the first 4 months, either your arms or a Moby Wrap for a cheaper alternative to something like an Ergo, it's really not hard. Do a search on car-seat breathing and you'll find the studies done about the dangers.

Add: Looked at the stroller. It's not the jogger that I prefer. If you're going to go with that style of stroller, look at the Chicco strollers. They lay completely flat, so it's better for the SIDS aspect, and have better reviews. I honestly wouldn't get a Baby Trend stroller that's not the jogger because they don't push well, don't maneuver, don't move well. It's all about the wheels and those little wheels always are a pain in the neck on strollers.

This is one similar to what I thought you were talking about. They're approved for babies about 2 months up.

Looking for a quality bike for my beyond wonderful, eight year old niece moving up from a twenty inch bike?

Joseph G

I need advice on purchasing a quality bike for an eight year old girl. One who loves to ride. She is moving up from her twenty inch bike. Any suggestions on twenty-four inch wheel bikeshop bike that is under $180? Or on a department store/sporting goods store bike that is of the same quality as bike shop bike.Would prefer the cruiser type bike to the mountain bike type, but quality level and reliabilty are most important factors. Thanks for the help!

Answer
Excellent opportunity to buy a lightly used bike. Kids don't normally fit this size bike for more than 2 years. By the time they turn 10-11 yrs old, they will be in a 26 inch wheeled bike (unless they are short). With your budget, you will get a better bike too. A decent bike shop quality bike will be over 200US.

Regarding the first answer being too young for a 24? My boys were on very comfortably on 24" wheels at 7 yrs old. They looked like circus clowns on toy bikes when they tried to ride 20" wheeled bikes at that age (other than BMX).....but I would agree that a fitting would be in order, or at least go shopping with the kids height/proportions at hand so you know what to get.

Anybody know where there is a motorcycle store in Manassas,Virginia?

I need to know where there is a motorcycle store. I need one that might sell pocket rocket for kids. Maybe a X18 Mid-Bike. Can you guys help me? Thanks!

Answer
Before you spend your money, be aware a pocket bike cannot legally ride on the street, bike path, sidewalk, or bike lanes. Only legal on private property with owner's consent.
Below are the Vehicle Codes of Virginia that cover pocket bikes.

Code of Virginia, Title 46.2, section 100, provides that:
"Motor-driven cycle" means every motorcycle that has a gasoline engine that (i) displaces less than 150 cubic centimeters; (ii) has a seat less than 24 inches in height, measured from the middle of the seat perpendicular to the ground; and (iii) has no manufacturer-issued vehicle identification number.

Code of Virginia, Title 46.2, section 911.1, provides that:
No person shall operate a motor-driven cycle on or over any public highway in the Commonwealth.
("Highway" includes streets and roads, § 46.2-100.)

âRecently, there has been a growing interest in a type of vehicle called a "Motor-Driven Cycle." These types of vehicles are like a miniature replica of a real motorcycle and are fully operational⦠The operation of these cycles on public highways is prohibited.â

How much does it really cost to raise a child?

kids bike 18

kids bike 18 image

Andrea

I have been trying to research this, but all the websites I find seem unrealistic - they say it will cost over $300,000 to raise a child from birth to 18. So my question to you is how much does it really cost for you to raise your child? And how much would a second or third child cost? I want six children overall. What is a rough approximation of what our household income should be in order to raise six children?

Answer
Cribs, baby beds, changing tables, childseat, bouncy chairs, exersaucer, tricycles, scooters, bikes, skateboards, baby monitors, playpens.

Triple your grocery bill because one boy can eat enough for three people. And, because kids want the cook cereal with Dora on the box. And, because between working and caring for the kids, you pay more for convenience foods.

An allowance.

Health insurance premiums. Life insurance premiums. College savings.

Prenatal visits, hospital stay when you give birth, and followups.

Well-care checks. Many insurances don't cover them, and they can cost $200.

10+ diapers a day, approx 10 cents per diaper. Say $1 per day.
3 years, times 365 days = $1095 if your child potty trains at exactly age three. You might need pullups for night time for a few years. They are more expensive. Add another $300-400.

Formula, baby food, baby cereal, baby fruit juice, bibs, diaper rash ointment, baby shampoo, wipes, etc. Formula is like powdered gold.

Doctor visits. Medicine. One of my kids had asthma medicines that cost almost $300/month. Medical equipment like a nebulizer. Braces. X-rays because you're not sure they have pneumonia, or sonograms because they had more than one kidney infection. You're going to see your pediatrician so often that you'll think you live there, and you might as well have your paycheck sent directly to his office..

Childcare, $165 per week from birth to age 5 (free public kindergarten). 5 years times 52 weeks time $165. $42,900.

School lunches, $2 per day, 5 days a week, 9 months a year, 13 years (K-12). $5200.

Complete new wardrobe every spring and fall, every year, including jackets and shoes, underwear, socks, hats, mittens, whatever (kids grow fast). $1000 per year, for 18 years = $18,000.

Summer daycare, at least through age 11. $165 * 12 summer weeks, times 6 years (K-5). $11,880. plus registration fees every year. $150*6 = $900. Total around $12,780..

After school care, $50/week, 35 weeks a year, 6 years. $10,500.

If not public school, then add tuition for private school.

Swimming lessons, dance lessons, gymnastics, cheerleading, activity fees, field trips, registration fees, uniforms, sports equipment, musical instruments. Costs vary wildly, and can be VERY expensive. Let's just guess around $1000 per year or more.

PTA fees, school fundraisers, t-shirt order forms, etc.

A car for your young driver. Auto insurance (very expensive). Gas. Registration. And repairs when they wreck it.

Money for dates and outings with friends.

Christmas, Easter, Valentine's day,Halloween,New Years, birthdays, including the party AND the gifts. Depends on your budget, but very expensive. Many familys spend over a thousand just on Christmas.
Family vacations.
Famly portraits.
Trip to Disneyworld.

Doing the "in" things, like BuildABear, Sweet n Sassy salon, Chuck E Cheese, Arcades, movies at the theatre (priced tickets recently?). Most are $100 a pop several times a year. State fair. Street carnival.

Purchasing a van, because your little 4 seater's not going to cut it. Gas for running back and forth to school, dance lessons, girl scouts, daycare, McDonalds, etc.

Redecorating your child's room several times, from nursery to young kid to teen.

Buying all the necessities for when they leave for college.

Add an extra 15% on every shopping trip, because baby is tugging on your dress asking "Can I have one of those?"

Enormous utility bills because your darling teen takes hour long showers, your young one never learned to close the door, and your teen thinks the thermostat should be set at 68 in the summer.

The cost of missing work every other week and not getting paid, for ear infections, stomach viruses, unexplained fevers, lice attacks. Kids get sick A LOT. Plus staying home or paying daycare for those frequent days and weeks when school is not in session for teacher in service days and fall and summer break. By the way, you go to work when you are sick, because you used all your sick leave on the kids.

Replacing your carpet, because it looks like you've had farm animals living on it. Replacing your furniture, because the kids have been using it as a see saw and a trampoline, or they're not quite potty trained, or they had that unfortunate accident with the chocolate milk.

Buying a trampoline, swingset, maintaining a pool, etc.

A new more expensive place to live with another bedroom, because baby needs someplace to sleep, with a yard, because baby needs fresh air and sunshine.

Interest on your debt, because you weren't fully prepared for the onslaught on your checking account.

If you divide $300,000 by 18 years, you get around $16,666 per year, or around $1390 per month. You'll pay an extra $600 to $800 a month on childcare, groceries and dry goods and medical, and the remainder will hit in large random chunks throughout the year. For a person making $50,000, that's about 33% of their income. And, then there's Christmas.

$300,000 might even be low.

What bike should I get for my kid?

Ben

This morning I ran over my kids bicycle when I backed out of the driveway. I was thinking about getting him a walmart junk bike but I figured that maybe I should just go out and get him a good one instead. Are there any good aluminum framed BMX bikes for 7 year old kids? His destroyed bike is an 18" walmart Mongoose ship anchor.

Answer
Bike shops are usually the best place to get an entry level bike for any age. Sure the price will be more than a department store, but you will be getting a suitable vehicle as opposed to a disposable toy.

Childrenâs bikes are usually cheep and disposable no matter what. Some BMX companies (freestyle & race) have invested some money into making childrenâs bikes more reliable for performance. Childrenâs mountain bikes have come a long way as well. Expect these bikes to be more expensive than normal childrenâs bikes.

Take him to a bike shop and hook him up with whatever he likes that fits him. At 7 years old a bike is usually a bike. If you have money, buy it. If you donât find something in your price range at the bike shop, check out craigslist. Hook up with a few sellers that are selling something similar to the bike you found at the bike shop. Do some test riding, and low ball the best seller with cash.

If you donât know anything about bikes, take the craigslist bike back to the shop for a solid once over.

I hope this helped!

yeah would i get my lisence revolked? do i have to be plastared drunk to get the dui? if i pass all the normal tests but blow just over the .08 limit will they probably just let me go? also im usually on a kids sized bmx bike if that makes a difference

Answer
CA law does not allow for a DUI on a bike. You could face only public intoxication charges. (Assuming you are over 21 and not looking at MIP) Note that the law section that cowboycop quotes is NOT dui, and does NOT carry any drivers license consequences.

What should I do with my old BMX Bike?

D.R.E.

Ok I have a old black & gold Royce Union FX760 BMX Bike thats been sitting in my basement for years. Its still in good condition just has a bent rear axle.Should I fix it up or should I junk it?

Answer
If you're not using it anymore why not fix it up and donate it to a kid that doesn't have a bike. That gets it out of your basement and gives you a reason to sleep well at night.

When looking on ebay or craigslist, I have come across: Roadmaster, Huffy, Magna, Trek, Pacifica, Mongoose as the usual brands that pop up for $100 or less. Should these all be avoided? I am a mom who wants to ride with her kids when we go camping, on some trails, around town. So, I am not an avid cyclist and do not need a wonderful bike/brand but also do not want junk. Thanks.

Answer
Well, for $100 used a Trek could be the best. Every brand you mentioned is very low end, except Trek. Trek makes good to very high end bikes. It'd be the 1st choice, but a BEAT UP Trek may be the worst choice. All companies make many models. It's like saying which car should I buy a $500 Chevy or Ford, hard to say.

I will say this, get one that fits you. Look for a bike that has v-brakes instead of side-pull. Stay away from thumb shifters, grip shift or rapid fire types work much better. Of couse test ride, if it works well, wheels are strait and it's in good shape you are set. If it's for camp riding etc. almost anything that work's well when you buy it should be OK. With infrequent use, a used < $100 bike could last forever.

How do I pick a freestyle BMX bike?

argh.pirat

What brands are respected freestyle BMX bikes? I thought Mongoose where cheap kids bikes but they're everywhere. From what I can tell I should be looking for one that's 20". I'd like to ride street and vert for now and am looking for something under $150.

Answer
20" has a lot of possibilities... it would take a while to find one under 150, i would expect to find one under 200. go on danscomp.com , they have a lot of bikes. heres 2 under 200

What happens if you work out frequently without eating a lot?

I've been working out more and more. But I haven't been eating more. I generally eat less than 2,000 calories a day.

I'm 6'2", 180 lbs. Daily I ride 10 miles on a bike, run a mile, 2 max sets of hindu pushups. 2 max sets of situps and 3 sets of 10 pull ups.

I know conventional wisdom says I need to eat like 9 meals a day of a dozen fruits, nuts, and what not to get up to probably 3k calories per day. But could this be wrong?

Basically, I feel great, have very good energy (great energy when I get red meat) and I look great too.

Has there ever been any research into this? Does anyone have any personal experience or know the effects of such behavior?

Answer
The following healthy living recommendations will help you if youâre trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:

*1) Burn more calories then you're consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm

Get a diet and fitness calculator that you can put on your computer or cell phone. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.

Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:
Adults: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
Teens/Children: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/exercise/weight/bmi.html

It is difficult and unhealthy to lose more than one or two pounds per week. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. If you eat 500 fewer calories per day for a week you will lose one pound. If you burn through exercise 500 more calories per day for a week you will lose one pound.

*2) Eat natural and organic foods found on earth versus something created by a corporation to make money. Eat meals in small portions throughout the day and take a good multi-vitamin supplement.

Avoid âHigh Glycemic Load Carbsâ (sugar, pastries, desserts, refined starches such as breads, pasta, refined grains like white rice; high starch vegetables such as potatoes) and drink lots of water. Read this article for more information on high GL Carbs:
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/carbohydrates.html

Do not try fad diets or diet pills. Here is an excellent food pyramid that anyone can follow: http://www.rayandterry.com/html/images/PyramidLRG.gif?osCsid=26a424be471d1337e7c2f105d5c64d9d

*3) Exercise on most days by doing cardiovascular training and/or resistance training activities.

Read a book or find a certified trainer to make sure your doing all resistance training exercises correctly. A great book to buy that teaches you the resistance training basics is âWeight Training for Dummiesâ. A superb magazine to buy with resistance training routines that will not get you bored is "Muscle and Fitness". Signup for the free newsletter. An excellent free online resource is at http://www.exrx.net/

A good book to buy that teaches you the cardiovascular training basics is âFitness for Dummiesâ.

*4) Get plenty of sleep. Sleep experts say most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for optimum performance, health, and safety.

*5) Educate yourself continually on health issues and make a life long commitment to good health. A great free publication is âDietary Guidelines for Americans 2005â. A superb book to read is âYou The Ownerâs Manualâ. An excellent periodic publication is the âNutrition Action Health Letterâ. A reputable test you can take to measure your biological age is at http://realage.com

What areas are best to move to in Rapid City SD?

mudpuppie_

I am planning on moving my family with 4 children to the Rapid City area to attend the School of Mines. We are looking at rentals in the area and want to take into account the quality of the area we move to. Every place has its good and its bad sides, we are aware that there is a gang presence in the city and we are aren't interested in living anywhere where that activity is concentrated. Looking for a nice middle class area where the kids can ride their bikes down the street and make friends in the neighborhood any ideas? What schools are the best in the area? What areas would you recommend and which would you warn against?

Answer
Questions about Rapid City are always welcome! I try to keep an eye out for them. ;)

I answered a similar question awhile back so forgive me for copy/pasting my neighborhood information:

Here is a general breakdown of the parts of Rapid City. I left out downtown as it is mostly just very small apartments and not really suitable for family living. Also, anywhere outside of the city limits and into the country is going to provide you with a more "open" feeling, and there isn't a general "good and bad neighborhood" rule there. (Feel free to open Google Maps and follow along.)

West Side - The West Side is referred to as anything west of Mt Rushmore Rd (also called 8th street). This tends to be referred to as one of the nicer sides of town and usually holds middle class to upper middle class residents. There aren't really any areas here that I personally wouldn't feel comfortable raising a family in.

Along Sheridan Lake Rd are some of the newer houses. These are really nice/family friendly neighborhoods. The further along you drive down Sheridan Lake Rd, the more expensive the houses get. Red Rock Subdivision is located about 10 minutes out of city limits and contains some huge houses that are home to upper class residents. This area is beautiful.

South Rapid - Also known as "Robinsdale Area" to some. It is basically anything South of E St Patrick Street. This is usually home to middle class residents but there are some upper middle class that live here as well. My dad lived on this side of town, and when I was growing up I never felt unsafe here. The houses between E Fairmont Blvd and E Minnesota St are probably the nicest on this side. Between E Fairmont Blvd and E St Patrick St you will find that these houses tend to be smaller.

North Rapid - North Rapid is basically anything north of Omaha Street. I honestly do not recommend living the areas between Omaha and I-90 nor the areas directly west of Lowes and Best Buy. These places are usually home to the lower income residents of the area and there tends to be higher crime rates here. The houses are also very small and often poorly maintained. Now, N Haines Ave (North of Lowes and Best Buy), has some nice houses. This area is newly developed and are nice neighborhoods consisting of about middle class to upper middle class residents.

Rapid Valley - This area is hard to give a recommendation too, and I even live in this area. It's a mix of old and new houses and nice and not-so-nice neighborhoods. Basically all the "newer" areas around Reservoir Rd and Twilight Dr are nice neighborhoods. However there are some streets that look less than lovely. Thankfully, the good and bad areas can pretty much be determined by just driving down the street here.

As far as schools go, Stevens High School is generally the school that is regarded as higher class. The classroom sizes are smaller, allowing for more individual attention. Central High School is currently a bit over crowded, but is getting an extension. I went to Stevens and loved it, but also had friends who went to Central and had no complaints. Both schools have a lot of security for the safety of the students. (Also, a side note that the elementary and middle schools often are determined by where you ultimately decide to live.)

I wish you guys the best of luck in finding a good rental home! :)

How can I decide which is safer...a front or rear mounted child seat on my bike?

best kids cruiser bikes image

San Jose M

My hubby says putting a child seat on the front of my beach cruiser is wrong. But from what I've been reading, the front is safer than the rear. Plus I would rather see my son.

Is there a site I can go to that would give me a definite answer?
What do you do?

Thanks!

Answer
Front-mounted seats are very popular and have been used in Asia and Europe for decades. They are less common in North America. Many people swear by these because it is easier to keep an eye on the child and have a conversation with them, and get the child in and out with greater ease. The fore-aft position of the child affects stability. More mass over the front wheel is more stable than mass over the rear wheel. Therefore, a front child seat will be more stable than a rear child seat.

Over three years old a trailer for sure. Most kids get too tall before too heavy for seats.

how many of those high dollar aftermarket Harley Clone bike companies are still In business?

Q. Personally im glad that they are going under,50,000 dollars and a trailer dont make you a biker! I would rather try to keep up with a kid on a Ninja than ride with any of those posers! At least the kid on the sportbike gets out and rides it like he stole it!And That kid always wants to check out my panhead!

Answer
People ride for a whole lot of reasons, and some people have a very low tolerance for risk.

If you are on the road with me and on two wheels then I could care less what you are riding. If you wanted the bike with nothing but chrome and the coolest paint job you could find, or just wanted an old beater that could get you from place to place then you are still good with me. Being a "biker" has nothing to do with how much you ride, how fast you ride, or how much leather you wear.

At least one person I know rode for a few years when he was younger, and due to Parkinsons he will never ride again. He is still as much a biker as any man alive because he has faced the same dangers we all have, and he still wants to ride but can't.

Just as many people scream about the Harley tax and ride a metric cruiser as ride Harleys and scream about the expensive custom bikes. Ride what you want, as long as you are riding. When you can not ride anymore then sit and talk about the good old days and offer advice to those just learning to ride.

Being a biker is in the soul, not in the specific "lifestyle" choice you make. Does someone have to play in the NFL to be called a football player? Does someone have to drive in a NAScar race before they are an auto racer? If so than if you are not wearing full colors in a national 1% MC then you are not a biker. So quit being biased against what someone else rides or how they ride.

Oh and BTW, this is coming from someone that used to track race superbikes in Japan, and now owns a Heritage Softail Classic and rides it every day rain or shine to and from work plus just for fun to the tune of at least 100 miles per day. Does that make me a biker in your eyes, or is there another hoop I need to jump through?

I like New Kids On the Block- Summer Time and
The Corrs- Summer Sunshine.. :)

Answer
Sunshine by Atmosphere

Ain't no way to explain or say
How painful the hangover was today
In front of the toilet, hands and knees
Trying to breathe in between the dry heaves
My baby made me some coffee
Afraid that if I drink some it's probably coming right back out me
Couple of advil, relax and chill
At a standstill with how bad I feel
I think I need to smell fresh air
So I stepped out the back door and fell down the stairs
The sunlight hit me dead in the eye
Like it's mad I gave half the day to last night
My bad sight made me trip on my ass right into that patch of grass like that's life
All of a sudden, I realize something
The weather is amazing, even the birds are bumpin
Stood up and took a look and a breath
And there's that bike that I forgot that I possessed
Never really seen exercise as friendly
But I thing something's telling me to ride that 10 speed
The brakes are broken, it's alright
The tires got air and the chain seems tight
Hopped on and felt the summertime,
It reminds me of one of them Musab lines like

[Chorus 2X]

Sunshine, sunshine, it's fine
I feel it in my skin, warming up my mind,
Sometimes you gotta give in to win,
I love the days when it shines, whoa let it shine

If I could I would keep this feeling in a plastic jar
Bust it out whenever someone's actin hard
Settle down, barbeque in the backyard
The kids get treats and old folks get classic cars
Every day that gets to pass is a success
Every woman looks better in a sun dress
The sunshine's an excuse to shoot hoops, get juice
Show improve their moves and let loose
I hear voices, I see smiles to match em
Good times and you can feel it in the fashion
Even though the heat cooks up the action
The streets still got butterflies
Enough kids to catch 'em
Ridin my bike around these lakes man
Feelin like I finally figured out my escape plan
Take it all and the day started off all wrong
Somehow now that hangover is all gone
Ain't nothing like the sound of the leaves
When the breeze penetrates these southside trees
Leanin' up against one, watchin the vibe
Forgettin' all about the stress, thanking god I'm alive
It's so simple, I had to keep the song simple
When I get home I'm gonna open all the windows
Feelin all right, stopped at a stop sign
A car pulled up, bumpin Fresh Prince's Summertime

[Chorus 2X]

do you think the number of people using bicycle will change in the future?

avaq

Answer
Not to be a party-pooper, but my feeling is that there will NOT be a notable increase in bicycle usage in the near future (5-10 yrs) in the US.

Why?

1. People are attached to their cars. Despite favorable weather and road conditions, the vast majority (probably near 95%) of cyclists I see on the road are on recreational or training rides, not commuting.

2. Oil prices have stabilized. OPEC wanted the crude price to settle near $70, and market speculators seem content. China stockpiled crude oil (as well as other raw materials) for its high growth, but China's economy has slackened as well and won't be driving up the price of crude in the near future.

3. Even at $5/gal, people still got in their cars last summer and drove like all was normal, even though their very actions (high speed of travel, frequent short trips, etc) were keeping the fuel prices high. Stupid is as stupid does.

4. Even during the Great Depression, most people kept their automobiles. Even at the cost of parting with other, possibly more important, belongings. Even when they had no money for gasoline or any need to drive. The auto brought independence at a high cost.

5. By far, most communities have lagged behind their once star-studded plans for bicycle infrastructure. Even when the economy was strong, there was seldom that extra bit of money necessary for striping bike lanes, installing racks, or cleaning the rubbish out of existing bike lanes and shoulders. Now there is no money for such worthy public works. City councils will still speak boldly of their ambitions in the interim, but very little will be done to make the roads safer for commuting and recreational bicyclists.

6. Commuting by bike isn't expensive, but it isn't free either. For short commutes to work, school or the store, it's cheaper than driving. But it still requires an outlay of finances. Consumables such as tires, chains and cables wear out. Bikes need regular care and maintenance. The average commuter will depend on someone else (the LBS) to do this work.

7. Cycling still falls behind the gym in popularity with fitness buffs. The gym is always there, many are always open, and there's no concern with weather, hazards, or any other "inconveniences" that still pale in comparison to what our ancestors dealt with on a daily basis.

8. Bike manufactures have nurtured a culture that road cycling is for the more affluent. High modulus carbon frames, integrated shifting, proprietary wheelsets, ceramic bearings, blahblahblah. While this isn't true of certain makers, it is true of the "big four" (c-dale, trek, specialized, giant). The high cost is a turn off for those that are financially conservative and a complete obstacle for those that lack the disposable income altogether. The technology is a great option, but the shops are killing off potential customers with their constant upselling.

9. Off road access for mtbikers is becoming limited in some areas. State parks and wilderness areas have closed access to some trails for fiscal reasons, and other trails are now off limits to bikes for liability reasons.

10. Kids don't ride bikes like they did 10, 20, or 30 yrs ago. They spend more of their time inside on various networking sites or playing Wii or PS17. It's not uncommon to hear of teens and young adults that are trying to learn to ride a bike for the first time,,,or have no interest in riding as an adult because they never learned as a child.

So, yeah, I say no significant increase in cyclists in the short term in the States.

What's a real solution for a married couple with 3 young kids to stay committed in weight loss?

We are on the road that leads to heart disease, diabetes, and a life of obesity. And even worse I'm afraid our kids will soon be there too. Joining a gym isn't an option, because we can't get a babysitter for every day and we can't afford it. I feel like I may be more committed then my husband, since I've already lost 1/3 of the weight and have truly accepted my problem. I need some real solutions that will actually work! Maybe something involving a commitment that can't be broken or daily routines that can become habititual.

Answer
First, eliminate all fast food from your diet. Learn to cook together, involve the husband and kids. Feed your family healthy snacks, carrot sticks, raisins, apple slices, etc. Then find an activity the whole family can do, take walks with the dogs, the kids in strollers or on their bikes. Last, but most important, turn off the TV and video games. Sign the kids up for T Ball or soccer, swimming lessons, anything outdoors.

What are some ideas for a good youtube video?

L

I'm thinking of getting my videos promoted so I can earn some money from YouTube, what might be some really epic video ideas like the sneezing panda video? Where should I look?

I'm not much of an actor, and I'm afraid if I speak in the video people will say I sound like a girl. My voice is still a little high pitched and I'm 15.
What kind of videos do people like watching?

Answer
your not going to get 1,000,000 hits kid its pointless to chase after that, but you can try no harm in doing that.

Video your own animal doing funny stuff, siblings?, strap the camera to your bike and ride it around or skateboard with it. Be creative!
