Can a baby 5 months old, 16 lbs and 26 inches long (not walking yet), use the CoPilot Limo Bicycle Child Seat?

maria w

Most baby bike carriers say that the child must be one year old and not more than a specific weight, but the CoPilot Limo Bicycle Child Seat simply says that you can use the bike carrier with a child up to 40 lbs. So does that mean that I can use the bike carrier with any baby under 40 lbs? I would really love to hear from someone with experience with this product.

Babies uaually gain control about 4 months.

Answer
You should not have a child on a bike or being pulled behind a bike until their head and neck are strong enough to use a helmet. Which is around 1 year.

http://www.ibike.org/education/infant.htm
Usually by age 12 months parents can start checking with the child's physician to see if they have the neck development to safely go for a bike ride. Most toddlers' neck and shoulder muscles can tolerate the weight of a helmet and absorb shock from bumps in the road at 1 years old.

http://www.helmets.org/little1s.htm
Nobody we have met in the injury prevention field recommends taking an infant of less than 12 months in a bicycle child seat, trailer, sidecar or any other carrier. Nobody. And we do not either.
New York state law prohibits it. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission thinks it is dangerous to take a child under one year on a bicycle, and here is their rationale:

Maurice Keenan, MD, from the American Academy of Pediatrics [21], requested that a minimum age of 1 year be reflected on the label for helmets intended for children under age 5. This would better convey the message that infants (children under age 1) should not be passengers on a bicycle under any circumstance.

The Commission agrees with the commenter that children under 1 year of age should not be on bicycles. Children are just learning to sit unsupported at about 9 months of age. Until this age, infants have not developed sufficient bone mass and muscle tone to enable them to sit unsupported with their backs straight. Pediatricians advise against having infants sitting in a slumped or curled position for prolonged periods. This position may even be exacerbated by the added weight of a bicycle helmet on the infantâs head. Because pediatricians recommend against having children under age 1 as passengers on bicycles, the Commission does not want the certification label to imply that children under age 1 can ride safely.

Source: 16 CFR Part 1203 Safety Standard for Bicycle Helmets; Final Rule, page 11726

That explains why you will not find a child helmet on the market sized for a tiny tot. You certainly do not want to ride with a bare-headed child, and in some places it is illegal. In fact, several states have laws against taking children under one year of age on a bicycle, even with a helmet.

Parents love their babies and love their bicycles, so it is natural to want to put the two together. That thought occurs to every bicycling parent, generally before the child is born. We see messages on the Internet indicating that some parents do put their children in baby seats of one design or another and take them along on trailers starting as young as five weeks. Others use a baby backpack. At slightly older ages, people use front or rear-mounted child seats. A few (mostly in the UK) use sidecars. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. A disclaimer: our purpose here is to cover the risks, so you know what you are getting into. We are hearing more these days about undiagnosed brain injuries, with symptoms too subtle for doctors to detect, but very real to families. And that comes to mind whenever someone asks us about babies and biking. We worry about your six-week-old entering the first grade six years from now with a small but detectable mental handicap. That is alarmist; this is an alarmist page.

"compared with 100 years ago, families in the UK are now child centred" Do you agree?

Nim

im doing a project for school and
this subject will lead to a 2000 word essay helpppp!!!!! i really need some ideas and it also has something to do with why there arent so many people having children

Answer
Not from the UK, but yes I do agree with you.
Go into any department store in the baby/toddler area and look around. Not only all the car seats and booster seats that are mandatory to have in your vehicle, but all the "child proof" crap for the home.

When I was growing up it wasn't mandatory to wear seat belts. So maybe do some research on how this CHILD FIRST attitude not only changed the laws, but how it impacted safety standards for vehicles, kids needing to wear helmets while riding bikes or scooters, etc.

Lightest durable frame BMX?

Matt

What is the Lightest, yet durable for dirt jumps AND skateparks
pics and name

Answer
Hm. Perhaps you should have clicked on "Discover" rather than "Ask". Anyway, I'll try to educate you so you can be the smartest kid on the block...

Stunt BMX bikes are never designed with light weight in mind. You NEED the weight to build up inertia to keep moving when you can't pedal or when you are flying through the air. On top of that, it is REALLY tough to design a lightweight BMX frame that will take the punishment...I know, I design them for a living.

Even considering chrome molybdneum (cromo) as a frame material, designers tend to use the greater strength of the material (hiten and cromo weigh the same) instead of thinning everything down and saving weight.

Regarding dirt jump versus park bikes, these also tend to be different in design because each has their own needs, such as sealed mechanisms on the dirt bike and (sometimes) longer chainstays on the park bike... stuff like that. That doesn't mean you can't use a dirt bike for street, but you should NOT use a park bike for the dirt.

So, forget the weight factor, decide on the 3 best dirt jump bikes you can afford, and pick your favorite. Don't leave out brands such as Diamondback or Mongoose when looking but DO ignore bikes from department stores- they aren't the same as bike shop bikes.

If you need help finding these types of bikes, call you local bike shops or search for BMX bicycle on your favorite search engine.

My friends mum thinks i'm a bad influence?

leroy

My best friends mum thinks i'm a bad influence on him and doesn't like having me in the house. i'm 16 and have known him for about four years. It's because i smoke, do dangerous things, get into fights, drive my quad bike on the roads without a driving license, get into trouble with the police and wear predominantly black clothes but i don't drink or do drugs whereas my friend does. I don't see why i'm so bad. She's the only mother who thinks i'm a bad person. Another mates mum described me as well spoken and polite.

What could i do to make her think i'm a better person? Would you let your kids be friends with me?

Answer
well for a start, you could behave better i;e quit smoking(nothing cool about it)as for doing stupid things...what can i say...boys will be boys!!!
There's basically nothing you can do to change mums mind, when people meet, opinions of character are formed in the first 60mins&basically this thought always remains,no matter how things change.
So my opinion is to change yourself for yourself only, because you simply can not please every one all of the time.
I am mum to a 13yr old boy&i go through the same things with his friend(they do drugs, vandalise, commit crimes, join gangs)i tell him what i think&hope he will make the right decision, but he will do what he wants behind my back,so i try to let him live&learn,so far he has let some friends(bad ones)go...but he decided to once he saw the trouble that comes with certain behaviours. So far he doesn't do drugs, steal, crime ect.
So kid all i can say is try to make educated decisions&pull yourself together, for your own sake, you will pay down the line!!!!
Take it upon yourself&talk to the mum if the friend matters to you that much, assure her that despite how stupid you sometimes are, your mate is not and you always have their back, see how ya go.
Just step up boy....be a man&don't forget to check ya-self.
PS:my son does stupid stunts with bikes, scooters, skateboards(he does this-he's been stitched up plenty!)I do not blame the boys he was with, coz i know with or without them,he will do it.
I don't lay blame on other kids,i know boys will be boys.
So don't stress to much,take care&be carefull.

Any Straight edge girls out their?

Eric A

It seems like no matter how hard i look, i wont find my perfect girl. Any girls reading this let me know if this is YOU: are their any girls out their that are straight edge (no drugs, alcohol, sex until marriage), are a tomboy, is into LOWRIDING!!!!! Working out, collecting records, golfing, and going to concerts!!! Loves music. Subject-wise has hovered around History because much of my political beliefs has been shaped by what I learned in the past. History plays a key role in shaping our future so we can learn from it or repeat our mistakes. Is a Republican, believes in Small Government, Less Tax, and a Strong Military! Social stances include, Pro-life, Pro-Israel, Pro-marriage, and Pro-gun! Is more about looking good than following the latest look of the week! 100% loves Jesus Is single with no kids and currently seeking for a relationship, but not rushing herself. that's my definition of a perfect girl!!!!!! THANKS!

Answer
Eric, I'm going to be really honest with you.

I'm eighteen and a Christian. I'm in an excellent college studying neuroscience and sociology with an emphasis in human services. I believe that the past shapes our lives and our choices shape the people we become today; in fact, that was the subject of an essay I wrote to win the scholarship that's putting me through school. I've never drunk, done drugs, or done anything sexually immoral. I'm single, a virgin, and I obviously don't have kids. I love music and am very involved in music programs especially at my church. I love classic rock and one of my favorite memories is going to a rock concert with my dad. I make my own clothes because I know how to and I'm more into what I like fashion-wise than what everyone else is wearing. I have three brothers and love wrestling, hunting, and racing with them (quads, bikes, cars, whatever we can get our hands on.) I love hiking and exploring new patches of wilderness, and have a job leading hiking groups at a Christian camp this summer. I've never golfed before, but I'd love it if someone would take the time to teach me. I'm registered Republican, but I vote for the person I think will do the best job in office. I'm pro-life, pro-marriage, and own guns and know how to use them. I believe in a small government, less tax, and a strong military because a majority of my family is made up of politicians, lawyers, and judges who actually know what they're talking about. I make an apple crisp that melts in your mouth and am currently learning to surf, somewhat badly.

But I'm not perfect either. Forgiven? Yes. Wholeheartedly trying to live life to please Christ? Yes. Perfect? No.

And I don't "date" guys over the internet.

You see, I've got a great relationship with God and I'm doing work that is truly fulfilling to me. And yeah, sure, someday I'd love to meet the right man for me. But it's going to be in God's time, not in mine. I pray for this man every night, that he will be led in righteousness and that I can be a woman who is worthy of him. But until such a time comes I trust God with my heart and try (not always successfully) to focus on my relationship with him instead of dating.

So, Eric, what was the point of all this? To prove to you and anyone else who may read this that good girls do exist. We might be a little hard to find, and we're certainly not perfect, but we do exist. And we're praying and waiting for good men who will come along side us. So keep on hoping, don't lower your standards, and be the kind of man that a good woman can love and trust one day.

Blessings to you.

Good bike for a tall person?

Dan S

6'4 37inch leg 240lbs. Looking for rules of thumb on buying a bike. I haven't owned one since I was a kid, and I don't have an easily accessible bike shop so I will probably have to buy online. I'm looking for a road bike with multiple speeds but I don't know where the best place online to buy one is, or what I would need regarding size/material. I'm not exactly strapped for cash or anything but I would like to stay under an upper limit of $500. If anyone could direct me to a good online store or, even better, an affordable and reliable bike for my size, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Answer
Buyer beware when buying over the Internet. Why? There's not a bicycle made today that comes "ready to ride" out of the box. Brakes need to be centered & adjusted. Derailleurs need to be adjusted. And worst case scenario - wheels need to be trued-up. Then you'll still need that bike shop - wherever it is in your area.

That being said...Bikes Direct or possibly Giant Nerd.com. For a few extra bucks, Giant Nerd offers what they call "Genius Build". What that means is minimal build up on your part & things like spoke tension on the wheels already checked. Multiple links below. Use the sizing charts for each individual bike as this changes from one company to the next.

Best Road Biking Gear ?

meeeee!

My dad is an avid biker.
However, he is sacrificial and never buys anything for himself, only for his family, so he has done without the legitimate biking gear for years.

This Christmas, I want to hook him up with some legitimate gear!

It's cooler where I live, so I know he definitely needs some biking pants, a jacket, and like, biking glasses (he always rides with sunglasses, but I want him to have the legitimate gear) (:

Any other suggestions, please suggest away!

I need help!
Thanks so much!
(if you provide links, it would be greatly appreciated!)

Answer
You sound like my kids. I'm congenitally cheap. I do get legitimate gear, but I lean towards the sale bins and closeouts, while my kids get me the good stuff that I would never buy for myself. Yes, its always appreciated.

Some thoughts: Shoes are good, but you can't buy them online, since sizes and fit are all over the place even among different models from the same brand.

Gloves are always good. If you're dad's putting in any kind of miles, he's wearing out gloves constantly. Tights, jerseys, underarmour (I like that better than bike specific base layers)

Here's my favorite place for a variety of jerseys. They have other stuff as well. If you get lucky and find what you need in their closeout section, you can be stylish AND frugal.

http://www.primalwear.com/

The other place I get most of my bike stuff:

http://www.performancebike.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TopCategories_10052_10551_-1?

Then of course there's your friendly LBS (local bike shop).

does anyone know of a multi speed 18" tire bike for a small child?

dave

Answer
You'll only find 18" wheeled bikes in a very few stores catering to kids like Toys R Us. These bikes are considered "transition" bikes where the child is too big for a sidewalk bike and too small for a 20" wheeled model. They don't make multispeed versions because the derailleur would hit the ground.

You do have some options however depending on the amount of pain you want to endure:

1) Buy a junior framd 20" wheeled bike with gears. They are available from a several of companies in the US like Raleigh and Diamondback (about $200) and in the Pinnacle line from Evans Cycles in London http://evanscycles.com . Fair warning, the Pinnacle costs close to $400 but is a great bike;

2) Go to your local bike shop and inquire about a multispeed hub- 3 or 7 speed from Strumey Archer would be a good choice. Find out if they are able to build you a rear wheel with that hub. It is a pretty simple matter to then swap the rear wheel and add the cabling necessary. You can get internally geared hubs with coaster brakes so there is no need for calipers. This will likely cost you something over $200- just for the wheel;

3) Determine the number of spokes there are in an existing 18" wheel (there are probably 24) then wander around yard sales until you find a bike that has internal gears and a 24 hole hub, then have the wheel relaced. New spokes and doing the dirty work will probably run about $80-100.

YIPPEE! I found an 18" wheeled multispeed bike- but it is in England- at Evans Cycles. The Raleigh Hot Rod. It costs £104 (about $208) plus the considerable freight to get it here.

(Ramadan children) question about bad dreams..?

Zunnun

recently I had a dream ...it was more like dream in a dream...and I died in it..I was told not to talk about bad dreams not sure why..can someone tell me why?

secondly..I dreamt my frnd and me were playing some king of vid game (Bike racing I have never played such game before) and I hit 8-10 vehicles (trucks cars and other things) nothing happened but when I hit a moped that was it...my frnd started shouting I am dead...woof got scared and woke up..

what does this mean?

{most of my online gang is offline right now }
@ second answerer : I am muslim..too maybe that's the reason..I read ayath-ul-khursi every night before going to bed i dont recollect reading lt that night..thanks sis

Answer
your not supposed to tell your bad dreams because your better off not knowing what they mean, and so that you dont freak out and do anything drastic...

the only people that can interperate your dreams are those who have studied dream interpretations in Islam...
or...
you could get a dream interpreation book.
i use ''The Interpretation Of Dreams'' by Ibn Sirin.

heers some information about the book and author. You can order the book online, or you can get it from a alocal Islamic bookshop.

Is my son too old for the Vtech Ride and Learn Giraffe Bike?

S.F.

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3497094

My son is 4 and he keeps seeing this bike on TV and reallys wants one for Christmas, but I was checking it out online and they said it was for 18-36 months. First I'm worried that he'll be too big (39lbs), but also that he won't be that entertained/stimulated by it and it will sit around collecting dust. He's a VERY energetic kid which is why I wanted to get it for him, to give him a way to burn off some energy when stuck in the house on nasty cold winter days.

Answer
I have a theory that as long as it entertains or teaches, a child never really outgrows a toy. If he weighs too much, try showing him the Fisher-Price Smart Cycle and seeing if he likes that. It plugs into a gaming system on the tv and lets him pedal while playing educational games. It's made for kids in his age range. Good luck.

BMX bikes (20 inch), how to tell which are for kids or adults?

SF kid

i'm trying to find a good bmx bike, but i've been to the shop where one felt realllly uncomfortable and the other felt good, but they were both 20 inch i think. or is there a different size for adults? i'm not big or anything i weigh like 150.

Answer
I am 31yrs old, and I ride a bmx that's a tad smaller than the ones available in stores. It's still 20inch, but the Top Tube is only 19.5"
When deciding on a bmx, they are all 20", but the length of the Top Tube (the tube between the seat post and the stem/handlebars) makes quite the difference. Some go as high as 22", and some as low as 17.9".
Wall-Mart bikes will feel very cheap and 'toy like', where'as if you go to a bike shop, you will be looking at more mid-high end bikes, with quality parts, built to last and take a beating.
Look for Double-wall rims, as they are a lot stronger and less prone to buckling. You won't be able to tell if they are double, single, or triple wall by looking at them, but some have stickers on them, saying so. Ask for the specs on the bike you are looking at, or take some makes and models of bikes you see in the store, and look up their specs online.
I am 6'0", and my bike is designed for Flatland, so it's light and short. Very few stores will stock Flatland bikes, because we make up only 5% of the bmx world.
Some handle bars have a lot of 'sweep', meaning the grip part of them are angled back or up. This can affect the feel of the bike a lot, but bars can always be changed over.
Tyre pressure, believe it or not, can also make a bike feel different. Most people will roll on 65-80psi.
Best way to go is to ride a few bikes and look at the parts that make it feel different, and see what takes ur preference.
Bar sweep, top tube length, tyre psi, seat height, angle of the bars(forward or back), crank length... all these things vary on all bikes, but all (besides the top tube) can be adjusted to suit your preferences. :)

Rome with 2 Kids - Need suggestions?

Srini

Hi,
I am making a 5 day visit to Rome with 2 kids, aged 3 and 1. I would appreciate some suggestions:
1. Can you please give some guidance on places to visit in Rome and Vatican? What is the best way to see as many places as we can with the two kids in mind?
2. Good locality/hotel to stay closer to the places?
3. Where can I baby supplies (diaper, formula etc) in Rome?
4. Which of the two airports is better?

Thanks in advance,
Srini

Answer
Villa Borghese would be a perfect place to spend a nice afternoon with the kids. The park is huge and you will find plenty of activities to keep you and your kids happy. Either pack a lunch or you can have sandwiches at one of the numerous cafes. You can rent bikes (also those family style bikes that seat four or five) you can take a train around the park (great for the little kids), there is a pond where you can rent a row boat, a children's museum, and from time to time have out door plays for the kids (Im not sure of the schedule). Also there is a few miniature rides for the kids. On the far end of the park is a Zoo if you are interested. Or buy a cheap ball and sit under a shady tree and let the kids run around. The park is a great place to relax and sit down after a long day of sight-seeing.

Not far from the park, just around the corner from the Flaminio metro stop is a child's museum, with hands on activities. I can't remember the name...Museo Bambini.. or something like that.

As far as where to stay, anything central that is close to the metro or with in walking distance to the center... it really depends on your budget. Ask your hotel what metro stop they are near, you want to make sure it is Metro A (Metro B is a little our of the way and not on the tourist path). The Vatican area is a good place to stay that is a little more quite then the center of town, but many hotels will lie and say they are near town, and in fact they are 5 miles away. So best bet get a Rome metro map out make sure you the hotel is near metro stops Spanga, Barbarini, Flaminio, Leapanto, Ottiviano, or Cipro. I would strongly suggest staying away from termini with small children.

Rome is beautiful, but also hectic and crazy so it will be a bit of a challenge with to small kids, hopefully you have another adult to help you out, otherwise I would suggest getting a double stroller.

Baby supplies can be bought at any supermarket (Supermarcato).

There is so much to see and do in Rome, that my suggestion is don't try to see it all. Otherwise you will not enjoy yourself and will be exhausted. Pick a handful of thing you want to see, save the rest for another time, but Villa Borgheses is a MUST!

Hopefully this info was a little helpful. I don't have children so I may not be the best source.

Is it true that kids in Puerto Rico of any age are able to drive cars?

The White

I had a friend who always lies and comes up with the most outrageous lies and thinks that people are gullible enough to believe them. He is Puerto Rican and goes to Puerto Rico a lot and has a lot of family there.

About 2 years ago, we were talking about driving and stuff and what the driving age was here in PA. He then told me that he wishes he was back in Puerto Rico because in Puerto Rico, kids of any age can drive as long as they pass the test. He says there are like 7 year olds driving cars and that once he even saw a 4 year old who was driving. He said that his cousin there is 8 and he drives and he said that every summer when he goes to Puerto Rico, he uses his grandma's car to drive and stuff. He says that they own cars and the elementary kids drive themselves to school every morning instead of having their parents take them. He said that they live literally drive down the road and the streets like that.

He also told me that he was going to buy a car from Puerto Rico, because there they are really cheap and like $100. He said that steering wheels are on the right side of the car like British cars. He also told me all this other stuff about Puerto Rico like everyone there lives in a mansion and that young kids around 10 can get real jobs. He said he knew a 15 year old lawyer and that the kids had to go to school only 2-3 days a week and he just told me all this stuff. He said more but it is too much to say.

But I was just wondering if the part about kids of any age driving was true? And are the cars really like 100 dollars?

Answer
Is it true that kids in Puerto Rico of any age are able to drive cars?
* No, not at any age.
* to take the test (written test) and get a learners license the person has to have 16 yrs old.
* to take the drive test the person must had at least 3 months with the learners permit.
* A younger kid do learm how to drive (older brothers or father teach them), but not do it legally. The law has a 16 yrs old limit.
* However, there has been at least one documented case, by the police and the press, where a little kid (7 yrs old?) has taken the wheel and drive a car to get his mother to the hospital. The kid was declared a herom he saved his Mom;s life. Police did not gave him a ticket recognizing it was an emergency.

elementary kids drive themselves to school every morning instead of having their parents take them.
* that's a lie, unless a kid over 16 stillin fifth grade.

buy a car from Puerto Rico, because there they are really cheap and like $100.
* well, a lemon used car, a pile of junk, can be sold for $100. and then repaired until be able to run again.

He said that steering wheels are on the right side of the car like British cars.
* false.

everyone there lives in a mansion
* some do, most people do not.

young kids around 10 can get real jobs.
* if selling newspapers in a bike or washing cars arounf the neirborhood are real jobs, then yes.

15 year old lawyer
* really? Probably a lawyer with 15 years of experience.

kids had to go to school only 2-3 days a week
* false.

trouble putting front tire on kids bike?

I just bought a new 16" bike for my 5 year old. Some assembly is required and that's normally not an issue at all. The front tire, however, does not fit on the fork(the fork is too narrow). anyone have any tips? The bike is a very basic girls Pacific Twirl.

Answer
You will need to pull them apart a little, most cheap bikes are like that. If it looks bent take it back, but most of the time you will have to spread the forks.

is this bicycle helmet too little girly for a 14 yr old grl?

flower.!

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Bell-Youth-Aero-Helmet-Poppies/12528137

Answer
TERRIBLE helmet on at least 2 accounts.

#1) Lack of ventilation. I've seen that exact helmet in stores. Not enough slots or areas to let air both in & out.

#2) At 14 years old, most kids are ready to step up to an adult sized helmet.

#3) Although the law states all helmets must meet certain requirements in theory, there's still a difference between 'theory' & practicality.

If you must buy a helmet from Wally World - see the two links below. Much better helmets. For a really good helmet at a good price & FREE shipping, see 3rd link from Amazon.com.

Why do babies wear helmets now?

Q. In almost every store i go to, like Walmart or the mall, i see women carrying babies with helmets on their heads. It's really weird and i'm curious.

Answer
There are a few kids that need a helmet in order to protect their head as they have some condition that makes head injury very easy. It is really rare to see anyone with this though. Maybe the mom's rode a bicycle to the store and just kept the helmet on the child. It could just be overprotective parents. It is actually not advised to have a helmet on a child when not on a bike(or riding in a bike carrier) because of the risk of strangulation-so I don't know if the overprotection thing would be why.

whats better kids trailer or kids seat mount for my bike?

mommy of p

I am going to be using my bike as priotity transportation to and from work. i will be bringing my daughter home with me from work. what attatchment is the safest and best( what should i purchase) a kids trailer to pull her in or a seat of her own to mount on my bike( should i get a front mount or a back mount).

my daughter is 1 year and 2 months. she walks and everything and is tall for her age.

please nobody comment how stupid i am for bringing my daughter home on a bike. i am working my ass off for a car and my husband and i only have one car and he leaves for work in the middle of my shift. so please nobody be rude.

to all others thank you for your time.
i am a teacher at a school. she is going to school with me. what the hell do i need a babysitter for!!

Answer
I would say the trailer. It may be harder to pull, but I think it is more safe. With the seat mount, if you fall over, well your kid does too, but in the trailor, they just seem more protected, plus you can put her bag and your stuff in their with her, Maybe you can get a trailer with a pivoting mount so if you were to fall she the mount would just pivot, but I don't know because I've never had one. I don't think it is stupid, but I just always though the seat mounts were kind of scary and dangerous! If she is in a trailor and you take a spill, she won't skuff her knees or hands or anything!

biking but seat causeing problems what to wear for protection fron front of seat?

jumbo20

i ride my bike alot i am a 15 year old male and when i ride my bike for a long time my penis and balls start to hurt alot. is there any thing i could wear to keep that from hurting so much

Answer
You didn't say if this is "casual" riding or riding a little more seriously and done for the sake of exercise. If it's serious, you should be wearing proper bike shorts, made of lycra and with a built in pad. (For god's sake DONT wear a cup on a bike--RU KIDDING????)
Next, is the saddle. It should be approximately level with the ground. Don't point the nose down or up. A lot of saddles have a cutout section in the middle which are designed to put less pressure on sensitive areas. They are very common--check the bike shop. Don't go for a "softie" seat. They are very amateur and for real non-bikers.

4 year old Birthday?

What can i get my 4 year old twins boy and girl for there birthday.

My daughter don't like playing with dolls.

They like drawing and painting they have loads of pencil glitter glue paint so i dont want to get them anymore.

They both love trains they got loads of wooden trains toys and loads of thomas toys.
They got swings and Slides
They got swings and Slides

Answer
My daughter just turned 4 and we got her a new bike from Wal-mart, it was less than $40.00. Also, if they are into thomas, how about a new Thomas t-shirt. Or go with the idea of no new toys and take them to a children's museum or ChuchECheeses for the afternoon.
A few more ideas follow:
1) The new Elmer's Paint that only paints on special paper. (available @ Wal-Mart)
2) Go to a craft store and get a candy making kit, they are super easy to use and your kids would love spending time with you making candy.
3) Get them a sand box and some sand toys (if your yard doesn't allow for this, use a Rubbermaid tub w/ a lid that you can put away when they are done.
4) If they are into toys with wheels, and you can afford it, Power Wheels are so fun! We got our girls a two seater and gave it them as a shared gift. believe it or not, one of them prefers riding and the other prefers to drive, works out great.
5) those huge cheap balls at Wal-mart are a huge hit at our house. They are 2 for 5 dollars!
6) Get them some new books to read and read to them. The best a gift a parent can give a child is time!

are bmx bikes sized differently than kid bikes?

.

I saw a 20" bike at target but it was too small. Yet i search on the internet and they say 20" would be good.

Answer
20" is just the tire size. The way you find different sizes on a bmx bike is by the top tube. If your height is 5'4 to 5'10 get a bike with a 20 to 20.5 inch top tube if your taller then 5'10 look for a bike with a 20.5 or higher. Bikes from Target,Wal-mart,K-mart,etc. are heavy and not worth buying at all. And they only come in one top tube size. Check out www.Danscomp.com they have a great selection of bikes, and remember the your top tube size so you can have comfort while riding.

Good luck

Kids Bikes?

marie

Want to buy my nephew a new bike for his birthday. He will be turning 4. What should I look for? I know he needs trainning wheels, but don't know what size to look for.

Answer
If he's small or average for his age he will need a 12" bike. If on the larger side maybe a 16". Both normally come with training wheels. Best thing is to head over to Wal Mart, Target, Toy r Us etc. and see how they fit. If it's a surprise you can always buy one and take it back if not right. Make sure to not get something he will grow out of by fall.

I would not take a 4 yo to a bike shop - most don't even carry kiddie bikes anyway.

what are some of your best memories when you were a kid?

?.?:*??*:?

Answer
We were poor. There were 7 of us. My dad could not afford to buy me a new bicycle, so he went to the hardware store and bought new stuff to put on an old bicycle and when I got home, there was my bike with new grips, freshly painted red paint, and of course, he always test drove the bicycles to make sure they were safe. I still remember him flying down the hill in front of our house testing out my bike. He was peddling away and showing me how good my bike was working.
Dad died in January, he was 81 years old and had so many health problems, His hair was gray, and he weighed about 120 lbs, much smaller than his 220 lb 6 ft tall frame from my childhood memories. I sure will miss him.

Where can I find a rain cover or canopy for the toddler seat on the rear of my bike?

SmokeyGun

I've been looking around, and there doesn't seem to be a rain cover for my kid's bike seat, so the kid is going to get soaked next time it rains and we're out for a bike ride.

Its been suggested to get a trailer which will be under cover, but that's not really an option since I can't get through the gates near where we live with a trailer behind my bike.

Answer
I don't think one exists but how about the old school rain poncho that the kid can wear and it will also drape right over the seat. If you can't find one small enough then maybe modify one to fit. Good Luck.

Is this bike worth 68$? Bikers help me!:)?

I've never used ebay. I was browsing and saw a cute bike for 30$, so I bid 31$. Had no idea i'd win. Problem is the cheapest shipping is 37$. That's more then i'm paying for the bike. Question is, is this bike worth 68$? Would you buy it, or just wait and find a cheaper local one? I don't know anything about bikes, but the listing states

Answer
To be honest with you, Murray Bicycles aren't exactly something everyone is scrambling for. Whenever someone puts rare in front of a bike, it literally means that they have no found search results on Google, and that sounds just about right with many old bikes. I cannot see the bike, and if it were just a Murray Hybrid or Mountain bike or road bike then it'd be great. Cruisers don't sell for much because they are very simple mechanisms.

Answer
If possible, you should ride each of them on the same trail so that you can compare. If you go to a show/race, often the manufacturers are there and have bikes you can test ride.

How much you're willing to spend and they type of riding you plan on doing really should influence your decision the most. For example, if you like climbing (as I do), you might pick the lightest bike. The lighter the bike, the more expensive though. If you like technical drops, you might pick the 2006 Specialized Rockhopper Pro Disc, because that has the 130mm travel fork.

I've just upgraded from an old 100mm to a new 130mm and that extra 30mm makes a difference on descents.

Disk brakes are nice, but I wouldn't choose one bike over another just because one had disks.

Do you ride now? If so, trade with some of your riding buddies to get a feel for how different bikes ride.

No matter what you get, if you really ride, you're gonna wear out just about every part on that bike (no kidding). If you get something with a nice fork and frame, but the rest of the gear isn't that great, you can just upgrade that stuff as it wears out. For example, my FSR used to be 8 spead, but the cassettte and chain and rear Derailleur have all worn out, so everything was replaced with 9 speed XT (and then all replaced again after a few years). The point is, it's better to get a good frame/fork with OK everything else than getting good equipment on a heavy/poor frame.

I'd probably get the '05 FSR because that's a damn fine bike and is probably cheaper than the others.

Mike.

Suspension forks on a BMX Big wheel? (cruiser) 24 inch?

Jez

I have a BMX big wheel with 24 inch wheels, im looking to buy some suspension forks for it and was wondering if it would work... Here is the bike i have with all the specifications

http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?Year=2007&Brand=Mirraco&Model=Icon%2020Forty%20(24%22)&Type=bike#.UDI95tV5mSM

And these are the forks im looking to purchase...

http://www.pro-bike.co.uk/24/21834-sr-suntour-24-inch-xcr-sf11-suspension-fork-cycling--8393539009011.html

Please let me know if this would all fit fine and work, thanks!

Answer
Probably so, but I'm afraid there's not enough tech information and pic views for either of those for me to say for sure. First, you need to be sure that when the fork compresses the tire won't hit the frame. Knowing the axle-to-crown height on both forks would be really helpful there, and the offset of the suspension fork. Also, the fork doesn't say what the dropout spacing is, but I'd assume that it's the same as your hub...shouldn't be an issue there, and swapping the headset shouldn't give any troubles either.

Those 24" forks are mostly intended for kid's bikes, but they have steel steerers so they will probably handle some park riding, etc. Marzocchi and Answer both had some 24" aggressive forks on the market for awhile, but both sucked and they quit making them, so most people just use normal 26" forks with 24" wheels on them...not an issue if you run disc brakes, and of course that's usually on mtb frames. Doing that on a bmx frame, however...lol. I've seen it done but I'm not sure of the particulars, and it'll slack the geometry a lot to where the steering feels really weird.

Best I can tell you without better specs or having the parts in front of me.

Can you help me pick out a bike?

Hello!

I'm looking for a bike to attach a trailer to, to haul my 2 kids around this summer. I have a mountain bike but it's not comfortable for me any longer (ever since I hurt my lower back). I already have the trailer but I want to replace my mountain bike with a more comfortable one.

So, I'm a woman, I'm 5' 5" and I would like:
-comfort
-street bike but it could be for light trails for when I'm without the kids
-at least 3 speeds
-anything else I should look for???

Could you help me and recommend a brand and/or style on any that you think I should take a look at? I'm the type of person that likes to research before I begin my browsing at my local shops! :)

Thank you soooo much!
Joe-yes, I was fitted for the bike originally. I didn't think about making the adjustments you suggested. Perhaps that is all I need? I will look into it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Answer
Was your existing mountain bike fitted to you for proper frame size? If it is, maybe you just need to adjust a few things to eliminate the back pain. You can try things like moving the saddle a bit forward, using an adjustable stem that brings the handlebars up more so you can sit more upright, etc.

If you got your heart set on a new bike, definitely go to a bike shop first to get fitted for the right frame size-- That's the critical foundation to build on to ensure comfort. Then build from there by selecting a bike with the right geometry (describe your back pain to the bikeshop person and test-ride different geometries). Then think about the feature sets you want (handlebar setups, wheel type, derailleur components, etc).

Good luck.

Look on the local ebay ans Craig's list for a good quality used bike. You may have to go with a bike with 24 inch wheels for a proper fit. Have your Dad go with to check out the bikes. You can also try the local Goodwill and Salvation Army stores.

guys, what size should my Bike be? im an tall kid?

jakey

lately ive been riding my bike with friends.... and the can do tricks that I hav
trouble with

Answer
Depending on how tall you actually are, the bike can vary in size. If you have a BMX bike be sure to have tall handle bars. Usually BMX bikes come in a 20 inch or 24 inch. If you think that your bike is too small, then go for a 24 inch BMX bike. I have a friend who is 6 feet tall, that can ride a 20 inch perfectly. But he has tall handlebars, so that is what i think you should do. Also, your friends may be able to do better tricks because they have been practicing, biking longer, or are just better. So don't think that you are bad just because your friends can do better tricks.

How is it like living in Richmond Victoria or its surrounding suburbs?

Q. We are moving to Australia in two months time. And all the feedback I am getting from friends and family who have gone there are positive so it is making us really excited.

But since they are family they might be a bit biased. So I would like to get strangers opinion.

How is living in Richmond or Melbourne?
What are things I have to beware off?
What should I be prepared for when we get there?

Answer
Richmond is an inner eastern suburb of Melbourne. It is walking distance to the city and is well serviced by trams and trains. Parking can be a hassle and traffic is bad, particularly at peak times. There are a lot of restaurents there, particularly Bridge Rd. and if you like Vietnamese, Victoria St. (it is a 'little Vietnam'). The shopping is very good there (both boutiques and factory outlets). There are a lot of pubs, some with live entertainment. You will be very close to the MCG, Rod Laver Arena and several other sporting/entertainment areas. Richmond is a pretty eclectic area as far as the people who live there and the types of housing. There are still are lot of old Victorian houses, lots of terrace houses, lots of apartments and some housing commission flats, so there is a mixture of well off people through to new refugees. It has become pretty fashionable for double income no kids people who like the closeness to the city/restaurents/entertainment in the last decade or so. It is quite expensive to buy into now. There is not too much to be aware of, maybe the odd low life/drug addict/alcoholic that hangs around any big city. If you intend working in the city I would suggest either walking (through the Fitzroy Gardens) or cycling along the bike track by the Yarra River.
Surrounding suburbs include Kew, South Yarra, East Melbourne and Hawthorn. They are all very nice - they tend to have bigger properties, leafier streets and no housing commission and maybe a bit quieter.

Any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Newcomer to Victoria, BC seeking information?

Sunshine

What makes Victoria so beautiful, as people tend to say? I will be there during wintertime.

Is there a lot of short-term/temporary housing available? I'm a student and will be needing one semester's accommodations. I am hoping to sublet with some students. What are some safe areas of the city to live in? Is Victoria a safe city overall? Any areas of the city to avoid, any to see?

What are typical price ranges for living in Victoria? Is cost of living high, rent, entertainment, etc high?

Anything else that's good to know?

Thanks!!!

Answer
Victoria is beautiful because of the climate, tourism and as a government town. The three add up to lots of gardens and greenery.

As a University town there tends to be accommodations for that. But property values are shooting through the roof. It has always been a retirement place, and more and more Canadians are hitting retirement ages. The most well off retirees from across Canada can sell their houses in other high priced real estate markets and move to Victoria and willing to spend it all on real estate there. So you are left to compete with that.

Right downtown at night is the main place to avoid. Lots of kids hang around. You also have to pay attention to your personal safety issues when on ANY student campus. The large group of students tend to attract criminals for anything from car and bike theft, to sexual assaults.

I suggest you check out the Royal BC Museum and hang out at the Legislature building on a sunny day. It scenic day and night.

Where can I purchase Trek MT-16 Bike?

jamesmcgov

I am looking for a mail-order source for Kids Trek MT-16 bike. I have seen sites that sell it for as low as $169 but none will ship and the local guys have obscene pricing.

Answer
If you see a site selling a Trek it is not a Trek dealer. You are probably looking at a used bike or someone reselling a new bike.

Most communities have a couple of Trek stores, if not it's hard to go 50 miles between them. Cross shop them and don't be shy that you are looking for the better deal. The need the sales right now. Also you really should build a relationship with a bike shop if you are looking for that quality of bike. Most Trek stores, no matter the discount you talk them into, will offer lifetime adjustments on the bike and some give free flat repair. Even a first bike needs attention sometimes.

Amount to spend on a bike?

pastcars

I plan to buy a bike. I intend to use it for fun and exercise. I know I want a mountain bike and found the one I like. My only thing is whether I should spend this much on a bike. I know that bikes can be a lot more expensive. Growing up we always had bikes that cost $100 to $200 dollars at most. I get it was a kids bike and you don`t want to spend a lot on those because kids are hard on bikes a tear them up. The bike I want is $430 dollars and I have never spent that on a bike. I understand that the more you spend the better the quality. What do you think? The link to the bike is here http://www.schwinnbikes.com/bikes/mountain/frontier-expert-9690#/highlights

Answer
Hey Pastcars,
You would probably be shocked by how much you *can* spend on a bicycle these days. Personally? I have 3 bicycles in my "stable" A single speed for riding around San Francisco (not as hard as you might think) and on The Playa at Burning Man. I paid $200 for that particular bike. I also have a Bianchi Milano I paid $750 for and I also have a Jamis Aurora that's a dedicated touring bike. With all the racks bags and all the goodies? It totals out to around $2000-$2500. I will admit to being a bit of a "bike snob" but I've also worked in the industry for a number of years.

One thing I can tell you is this... Most bikes in a given price range are going to be really close in value. The thing you really should be shopping for is a good bike shop. Here are some things to look for:

GET THE RIGHT SIZED BIKE! Be sure and LISTEN to the suggestions made by staff about what sized bike is best for the type of riding you'll be doing. There is nothing worse then having a bike that's either too big or too small. Don't be stubborn and think that "bigger is better" or that you'll know exactly what size frame is best for you, that's where experience and knowledgeable staff come in.

Do the shop offer service with the sale? Most shops will tune a new bike after 3-6 months for free. More is better.

Is the staff *knowledgeable* and helpful? or are they just trying to sell you something? Do they ask you questions about how you plan to use the bike?

Do they have a wide selection?

Do they make suggestions that include bikes at, above and below the price range you're looking at?

Are you greeted when you enter the store or are you left to wander without any assistance for hours on end?

Do they give "attitude" as soon as you walk in the door? Like it's beneath them to educate you about bikes?

Do they offer to fit the bike to you according to how you plan on using it?

Did you actually enjoy the experience going into the shop or was it all negative?

I would not recommend a Chinese 2-stroke mini-bike. I would recommend the 70cc to 125cc 4-strokes. I own two of these and they work and ride good. The 2-stroke is going to be working a lot harder than a 4-stroke and I just don't see the Chinese 2-stroke lasting more than a year or two.

what parts do you need to build a 49cc 2-stroke engine from nothing?

tom m

i have a moped frame with no wheels and no engine how to i complete it so it runs with no problems i want it to be able to idle after a pedal start a list would be nice. if its a used engine cylinder does it need to be reboared for new piston rings?

Answer
You need to buy a 50cc, 2 stroke engine block... first part on the list ;) You could get one cheap from on of those old mini-bikes, or one of those little 50cc kids dirt bikes.

tag along with existing kids bike?

Kilino9

I saw on the street a kids bike attached to an adult's bike with a sort of a tag along pipe kind of a thing. Does anybody know where to buy it or what it is called

Answer
There are two different types. One is called a Tag A Long that is made to attach to the seat post of an adult bike and the other is a boom type device that lifts the front wheel of the childs bike off the ground. The tag a long is a much better design.

Do a Google seach for.
Tag a Long

Rigid Bicycle Stand Alternatives?

Oliver K

Im currently involved in a project that needs to support a a standard 24" pedal bicycle while a person rides it (basically a stationary bicycle). The project needs to be designed for excessive side to side loads because little kids are going to ride it and probably not ride it properly. Im looking for other options then rather just mounting supports at both axles, or if anybody has a different idea of how to go about this

Answer
The bike is already designed to take its loads through the axle mounting points, so why not use those?

On another note, if the bike uses a standard size circular cross-section tube, and it's a steel frame (I know, these aren't as common any more), then you can put machinable shaft collars at a couple of points on the frame or even the seat post, and mount those to whatever support structure you dream up. While I was working in a group designing a handcycle that would attach to an existing wheelchair, we did some testing on shaft collars clamped onto the steel tubing that's common in bicycles. We found that any rubber or spacer material that seems like it would help it "grip" decreases the strength a great deal. With a closely matched bare shaft collar on a painted one inch steel tube, we had a 200 pound engineer hanging off of an 8 foot long cheater bar trying to shift the shaft collar- and it didn't budge.

You could probably get the job done safely and effectively with these shaft collars, but something I'd like to emphasize is that when you're throwing weight around, something has to give. If the bike is totally rigid, it will fatigue the rider and seem very unnatural. Any shock or impulse loads that are not taken up in some amount of compliance or damping can add up to very high local stresses- either at your mounting points, are at other points in the bicycle that would have previously had an acceptable factor of safety.

What would be a good bike for me ? not motorcycle?

asarath

Im 17.. 6 foot 4 and 160 lbs .. I am a beginner to the whole bike riding thing and i was wondering what bike would be good for me? I am willing to spend 170$ and down:/ i know it isn't a lot but its all i have. I looked at my local walmart and they were out of practically every bike. Amazon.com also was a bit of a bust because of the reviews and lack of bikes.
Another notch on the to tall belt :/ .. well ok thanks guys for the help and it would be for just around my town. It is a rather small town i know that wouldn't be helpful to the ones that have already answered.

Answer
So many things wrong here...

#1) You will NOT find a quality bicycle anywhere (new) for $170 or less.
#2) At 6'4" tall you will NOT find a bicycle that will fit you properly at ANY discount store.

You need a larger frame size than most people. See links below. On a road bike - you would require about a 62cm frame size. Discount store bikes come in ONE frame size only. On a hybrid - you would need about a 23" or 24" frame size. Most discount store hybrids come in about 18" or 19" frame size. Starting to get the idea? You would feel as though you were riding a kid's bike.

Even if you can not afford one now - go see some REAL bicycle shops & get an idea of what you need/want. Buy a bicycle based on "WHERE & HOW" you will be riding. Mostly on the streets? Mostly off-road? All on the streets? Where?

If you live in a fairly large city, you may find a quality used bike on craigslist in a larger frame size. That's all problematic. It's better to have a quality used Raleigh, Specialized, Trek, Giant, Cannondale or other fine brand than a new piece of s*** from a discount store.

I don't think I can take exercising any longer?

BatManPigB

I probably shouldn't say "don't enjoy". I'm beginning to hate working out. It's actually at the point where I am constantly sad that I have to exercise again in less than 24 hours. I started working out back in March, and I really enjoyed doing it for the most part at first... But just the past few weeks, I keep thinking to myself of many more things I could be doing rather than exercising. I love the results I'm getting from working out, but I just keep asking myself is having a good body really worth losing 2 hours a day? I used to have some spare time when I got home in the afternoon to relax, but now I'm REALLY starting to miss that time. Exercising is not really a challenge now that I'm used to it, but I'm just getting sick of putting myself in discomfort all the time. I only take one day off a week from working out (Sunday). And throughout the week, I'm constantly looking forward to that relax day where i can sit down and relax for a few hours. I'm actually getting to the point where I am getting more and more tempted each day to not work out and just go and play video games instead. I don't want to go back to my old, unhealthy self. But I don't want to be constantly worried about my next work out either. What should I do?

Answer
Youâre burning out.
You probably have the wrong diet and/or the wrong workout and/or not getting enough sleep and/or not having enough rest daysâ¦the list goes on.

Being physically active should be enjoyable (getting that ârunnerâs high!!), easy, surely not âputting yourself in discomfort all the timeâ.
Not exercising is really what puts you in discomfort the other 22 hours of the day, when youâre weak, flabby, fat and everything you do is hard like just going up some stairs, huffing and puffing.

You could also have mild depression (constant sadness is a symptom) even unrelated to your workoutâ¦often you stop wanting to look healthy, strong, toned, thin, fit because you broke up with someone or are going or went through a divorce. Youâre thinking âwhatâs the pointâ¦I look good and still get dumped or cheated on and have to dump someoneâ (think about how Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Elizabeth Hurley or Johnny Depp must have felt).

You should review your workout. Maybe get into sports with friends.
When I went on bicycle rides with friends, I was never thinking âgosh, I could do something more relaxing than having fun with friends and looking at the countrysideâ.
When my son plays Ultimate with friends on the spur of the moment, heâs surely not thinking âI should be doing something else with my timeâ.

Why on Earth are you only having once day of rest/week if you need 2 (which is normal), 3 (when you need a break) or 4 days of rest (like for beginners so they donât burn out within a month)?

If you keep doing what youâre doing now, your body will take care of your problem for you and FORCE you to slow down (lack of motivation, fatigueâ¦aches and pain here and there like getting headaches, backachesâ¦) and if you donât listen, youâll get cold symptoms and then flu-like symptoms and end up in bed.

Then it will be VERY hard to resume exercising when you get tired of being out of shape and flabby again as you will have lost your muscle mass and have to regain it (muscle mass is a âuse-it or lose itâ system and much easier to maintain than to build up).

Edit:

You can play video games on your rest days of not going to the gym, as long as it does not become an addiction. My kids (very athletic) play some video games and then stop to go rock climbing or running or playing Ultimate...

Look into Time Management and if you have 3 or 4 days rest, it will be easier to manage your time.

Good luck with your trip, seeing as how a few miles of your biking will have to be done over ocean.

Answer
Contact some news stations. Tell them your aim, and call for sponsors. Do your research. Call around, ask if any companies would sponsor you if you wear their company t-shirt. Get news coverage. Get people to support you. It will take a while to set up. Have a date arranged, act as though everything is organised except the money. If you are unsure about the date of leaving no one will think you are serious about it.

whats better kids trailer or kids seat mount for my bike?

If she is in a trailor and you take a spill, she won't skuff her knees or hands or anything!

is it legal to have kid seating at bike back in california?

jian l

if yes, what is the hardware requirement? and what is
the safety tips to carry a kid in bicycling?

Answer
A kid seat on the back of your bicycle is legal in California and a helmet is required. However, I strongly recommend against those seats. They make your bike top heavy and if you fall, your child falls with you. Your best bet is to buy a trailer to attach to your bike. They have roll cages and if your bike falls over, the trailer hitch has a pivot attachment which keeps the trailer upright. Also, if the trailer does happen to fall over, the roll cage (and helmet) will protect the child. Yes, trailers cost quite a bit more but ask yourself: Are you willing to sacrifice your child's life to save money?

What size of bike??????

Jose R

I have a 4 year old girl I was wondering what the proper size of bike I should get

Answer
Kids bikes are denoted by wheel size (unlike adult bikes) Take her to a bike shop (or sporting goods store but NOT kmart/walmart/target unless you want her to take biking)

A 12" is usually the smallest size then 16" 20" and 24". It all depends on how tall she is. You have to have her sit on a bike to see if it fits her right. Not all bikes are the same size even if they are listed as the same size. Different maufactuers do things differently. She is probably somewhere around a 16" size now thought. That said, remember she will outgrow it really soon. If she can sit on a 20" comfortably (even with the seat down pretty low) then that would be a bike she could grow in to.

What's wrong with kids bikes these days?

elisabeths

When I was a kid, I rode my bike everywhere, school, piano lessons, work, college classes, the store. Aside from a tune up here and there and having to top off the air in my tires I never had any trouble. My kids are a different story. They ride their bikes to school ( 0.9 miles) and not a day goes by without a popped tire, lost chain, broken brake cables you name it. "Mommy, can you drive us today my bike....?" is a chorus I hear every day. My husband fixes them only for them to be messed up the next day. Their bikes are not top models but I think descent (Giant, Specialized, Huffy). Why all this trouble? I think it is unreasonable. Any bike experts can tell me what I'm missing?

Answer
Send your husband to bicycle repair school. Most bike shops offer classes. You really have to know preventative maintenance and what to look for in the mass produced bikes.
Get a spare bike or two to keep those kids peddling off to school - that's awesome these days.
