I am seriously considering using a b20-b99 blend for a 10 year old Ford F-350 powerstroke truck. If anybody has had problems with this in a stock engine please let me know. Thank you!

Answer
I still think that people are so ignorant when it comes to electric
cars they only think of one way to make them run and that's batteries.
Its like you lost your mind and have no innovated ability to think of
more than one source of power. Every year people spend millions of
dollars to go to the gym they hop on bikes and treadmills and
ellipticals and pedal away for hours and then pay their gym for it.
Then they hop in their car and pay gas to ride home. The answer was
right in front of your face when you watched the Flintstones as a kid.
Do remember the car on the Flintstones. Hmm, not so stupid now is it?
Do remember how boats got across the ocean? Have you ever held your
hand outside the window and felt the power of the wind resistance
against your hand? The faster you went the more force you felt
pushing against your hand right. Have you noticed that the quality of
solar powered panel technology has increased tremendously in the last
twenty years. The quality of of generators and electric engines is
also there. Our government has manged to keep all of this from you
because they believe you are all ignorant and set in your ways. They
could make cars that run with out wheels but our government would
never allow it to be mass produced. If you had the means to build a
car that had electric generators that produced electricity via wind
power, Human power "recumbent bike pedals", Solar power and maybe some
lithium batteries you would have a car that would go thousands of
miles without ever needing to be charged or fueled.
But will this ever be allowed. Its amazing that china and japan have
magnetic trains that never touch the track they actually float be we
never use that technology. Its no wonder they do not put any emphasis
on science. They want us to remain ignorant and in the dark. They want
you to keep forking all the billions of dollars in tax revenue. They
want the price of fuel to sky rocket because most of them own the
stock. The only way to overcome the greed is to take matters into our
own hands and break the grip of Fuel mongrels from ourselves by building
our own fuel free cars. I just showed you the way. Now all you have
to do is " Just Do It!"
My method overcomes the perpetual energy law crap because you get extra energy, Via Human power and solar power! The sun is the source of unlimited free power and so what if you have to pedal your car for it to go long distances. I just saved you from getting fat as hell.

How do i get rid of this stubborn cellulite?!?

I'm a very attractive girl. I'm 5'4 120 lbs and i 'm trying to lose 5 more. I eat so healthy workout about 4 x's a week. But i have cellulite on the backs of my legs. I was so upset when my husband even mentioned it to me. I dont even know if i want to wear a bathing suit this summer. I've been to doctors for mesotherapy, and all kinds of injections and even endermologie. I drink 3 liters of water per day. I rub oils on my legs at night. But NOTHING works I ride a bike , run, walk jog do lunges squats but it wont go away. whats the deal can i get surgery for this. I know liposuction does not work it could make it worse actually. Any suggestions? I'm obsessed with perfection

Answer
Screw him he's a jerk!

Now if you dont hate me for having your back...
Try loofah, I've been using it for 3 weeks now. It is definately making a difference. I am of average weight and cellulite has been a problem for me since my second kid.

But I swear by the loofah. It also is supposed to brind blood to the surface and stimulate degeneration of the connective fat-to-skin tissues. It just takes alot of dedication and scrubbing. Do it while you watch TV.

All forms of the loofah are good but the loofah hand mit and large sponges are good for grip.

We are going there in the beginning of July and really want to fully experience Germany. The original plan was mostly sight seeing and looking at castles, but 3 days sitting in a car doesn't seem that appealing.

The best plan would be to see 3 or 4 cities, like Prague and Vienna. Along the way, stopping at a few little towns. The kids are all old enough to do some hiking and physical activities. Some scenic boat/car rides, maybe some architecture, parks, cafes, night life, markets, and really anything else. If you know of any exceptional hotels, that would be great too.

Just a fun vacation filled with a little bit of everything!
Thanks a lot.

What is it like living in Los Angeles? Specifically: weather, houses, freeways, work, people?

PER92

I'm thinking of visiting and then possibly moving after completing Urban Planning at university. According to PayScale the salary is good there.

Answer
For a number of reasons, we get a bunch of questions asking what itâs really like in Los Angeles.

First of all, I'll tell you what it's NOT like: It's not like anything on TV. People watch shows on TV and think thatâs what itâs like out here. The âReal OCâ, Newport Beach, The Hills, etc. Ever wonder why people in those shows never have to pay bills, do laundry, and are NEVER stuck in traffic? Because itâs FAKE. And the news doesnât help either, since they know that sex and sensationalism sells. News flash: There arenât running gun battles in the street. There arenât shootouts every day. Also, you donât see celebrities just walking down the street, all glammed up, or sipping a cappuccino at Starbucks waiting to sign autographs. We don't go surfing during lunch hour.

Some sections are REALLY nice, others are âghettoâ. Too many people have this vision in their head that LA is one or the other (either Beverly Hills or Compton). In fact, most of it is working class and middle class stiffs working to pay the bills.

You NEED a car to live in Southern California. We donât have an effective public transportation like New York or San Francisco. One reason is that LA is larger in area than either of those, without a central hub where everything is. Back in the 1960âs, we might have done it. But by the time local governments got their act together, it was much more difficult to make a working public transit system. Also, unlike NY, we have earthquakes, which make it a little more difficult to build underground.

The freeway traffic is probably the worst thing about living here. The 405 is the worst. Know why they call it the 405? Because you go 4 o' 5 miles per hour, and it takes 4 o' 5 hours to get where you're going. Freeway Traffic is bad from 6-10 AM and bad from 3-7 PM. I don't know why they call it rush hour. It's more than an hour, and nobody's rushing, that's for sure.

The gangs are the cause of many rumors. Keep in mind that there are gangs in any large town, in every part of the country. In LA, the gangs aren't really downtown, they are in South LA, East LA, and north Long Beach (an extension of the South LA gangs, actually). And here's the deal: Mostly, they just kill each other.

Gas is expensive in California. Itâs about 20-30 cents above the national average.

Yes, gas and real estate are very expensive in SoCal. However, this would be the best time to BUY a house because it's a buyer's market right now. There are a lot of foreclosures, and too many houses on the market.

Yep, freeways are a drag, it's smoggy in summer, and expensive to live here. Yet, if it's so bad, why do we have thousands and thousands of people moving here?

Weather, Activities, Plenty of jobs, Beaches, mountains, deserts all within driving distance, and plenty of opportunity for those who have the skills and tenacity.

In colder parts of the country, people keep their cars in their garages all winter. Kids get snow toys for Christmas. Here, kids get BIKES, scooters, and skateboards. 10 AM Christmas morning, the streets are FULL of kids on their new bikes, scooters, etc.

The job market is good here, mainly because there are SO many people here that it creates its own job market. Then there are MANY industries, including tourism, entertainment, shipping, manufacturing, etc. Itâs an incredible economy.

However, it is not for everyone. Every time someone posts this question, you get the LA haters who post their bile and venom. A lot of them donât know what they are talking about. Some people never even visit, and hate it on principle and stereotypes. Some actually visited once, and found out it wasnât like it was on TV, and it certainly wasnât Mayberry. A lot of people move here expecting Paradise, and are VERY disappointed when it is not what they thought it should be. Many canât deal with the expense, the traffic, or the somewhat impersonal nature of living in a large metropolis. To those I would say âgood luckâ to you wherever you are, but please donât spew your hatred in this forum.

As for lifestyle, itâs rather casual. You work during the week, and then go do something fun on the weekend, so that you can impress your coworkers around the water cooler on Monday.

To summarize, LA a HUGE metropolis that really defies easy description. I live in one of the nicer suburbs, but the commute is no fun, often 1-2 hours each way each day. However, 340+ days of sunshine really helps. Yeah, it's expensive. Mrs. Obviousman and I both have to work to pay the mortgage. But is it worth it? You bet!

That link to LAUSD is misleading. Not all schools are 70% hispanic. Despite desegregation efforts, there are still a number of schools in areas with high concentrations of one ethnic group.

Am I exhibiting a sign or signs of autism?

kid bike youtube speech
on Believe In Yourself Tom Free MP4 Video Download - MP3ster Page 1
kid bike youtube speech image
Q. I'm 19 years old going 20 in July and I'm realizing I don't have many friends. Now, I don't see myself as extremely awkward, however I seem to be overly intelligent compared to the average person. Not to say that's a bad thing because that's the nature of things sometimes.
I tend to avoid people, I enjoy being alone and I should probably add that I've always had some difficulty looking at people when I talk.
Today I had some music playing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tP-9UOvWaao some good song I like), and something happened; I was spinning around. It's not the first time I've done that, although I paid more attention this round because I've read about autism and it's symptoms; that of which can result from compulsive behaviour. In the past (when I was a kid) I've had times where I would turn over my bike and spin the tire, and repeatedly play in the playground and sat in class in a specific way everyday until grade 6. Today I spin the occasional coin, but that's as far as it goes.
I've come along way in improving my focus though, such as not spending too much time completely distracted on something like TV, playing the same levels in the Halo series or not looking at the ground when I walk around; which I did until I was 16.
Overall I'm coming to the conclusion that most people are programmed with a same type of personality. That such as when I pass a person walking somewhere, almost all of them look forward and then to the ground and forward again; in that sequence. actually these patterns are all over the place, right down to the way they sit or sleep.
I feel very different from the common person and there may be other signs I don't even notice. Just me asking this question maybe out of place in itself, so maybe you can clarify what a non-autistic person is like.

Answer
It's a possibility. If you didn't have a speech delay, it's more likely Asperger's syndrome than autism. Nobody here can diagnose you, so if you want a diagnosis you'll need to see an autism spectrum disorders specialist. Your GP can suggest someone.

You're correct than non-autistic people (neurotypicals) are creatures of habit. In general, they take the same route to work every day, sit in the same seat in the classroom, follow the same routine when they get ready for bed. Most people are quite predictable. The difference between an autistic person and a neurotypical is how necessary the routine is. When a neurotypical's routine is disrupted, they usually feel mild frustration but quickly move on. Autistic people need routines as a way of creating order and safety in a world that is chaotic and difficult to understand. When a routine is suddenly changed, this creates a lot of anxiety.

I have this 85 yamaha that I got about 5 years ago when I was a kid and was wondering if I could use it as a pit bike. It is like a 2005 and it is pretty small. (smaller than my friends 65 ktm) I notice a few obvious differences between my bike and the pit bikes I see. I was wondering if I could get some new parts or something and make it into a pit bike. I don't know if this helps but Im about 5'4 110 pounds.

Answer
Pit bikes in general are 50cc bikes modified for full size riders.

85cc bikes are race bikes and technically not a pit bike but you could ride it around the pits and call it what ever the hell u want. new parts and modification of the 85 will just make it hard to ride around the pits. throw some graphics on it and have some fun with it.

i don't really know how you plan to use it, if u want to use it as a bike you ride around the pits on race day then i would say ur better off selling the bike and getting a 50 and building your own pit bike. this is due to the fact that 85s have power bands and that isn't much fun when ur running between RVs. if u plan to just ride the bike around your house the 85 is a fun ride and you can call it a pit bike till your hearts content.

What are different kinds of awards to give kids on the motocross team I coach?

Just wonde

I am coaching a team for kids from 10-15 years old and want to give out awards at the end of the season...like MVP. What are some other awards I could give out?
I do plan to have an award for every racer

Answer
Get in touch with the local importers who deal with bike stuff. Where I one such is called monza imports and ask for some freebies. Also local bike shops and get stickers and odds and ends that don't cost much and do up some grab bags so all the kids can have one.

Don't just give out 'most improved' and such as while it is great to be achieving I find sometimes this only focusses on one or two riders and they get the pats on the back the whole way through. Did anyone have a big off in training as you could give out a 'bent handlebars award' One of the clubs I am involved with actually has this and it really is a set of bent handlebars. So make a few fun awards like this as well.

A lot of coaches I know get the kids to balance on their bikes and try to have a slow race. Those with good balance can stay upright with the bike basically not moving for ages. See who is best at this and give them an award. So you could make the end of year a fun things as well. Have a race where they have to start by putting their boots on before running to their bike and doing a lap. Again you can award a prize for it. You can do a tag team race where you put the riders in groups spreading the ability out and making sure each group has a 50cc bike to slow them down. See who gets over the finish line first with each member of the group doing a lap.

This way the day is fun and the kids go home, some with real achievement awards and others with just a fun award.

How to make eye contact with people if your afraid of people?

beautiful

Well let me first say that I am really awkward and clumy and at times I honesty think in crazy.

I am 13, and I have a fear if talking to people, with exposure therapy I have been able to talk to people more and more but I can't talk without a stutter or hesitation. I have OCD so people stare at me when I do rituals ( blink my eyes hard 5 times, shut the car door 5 times, pick something up and put it down 5 times etc...) and I've been bullied for it. My teacher calls on me in class and asks me questions frequently and I have to answer, that is when I start to break down. I can't make eye contact with him or anyone else and I just freeze. I eventually get the answer out but not without feeling like I'm going to explode⦠any tips. Also I stare at people and space out without even realizing it. And sometimes my teachers pull me aside and ask me if I'm ok (my careers 2 teacher has done it multiple times and he is helping me through all of this) and I have no idea what to say.⦠I've been told that I have a higher IQ that a normal teenage girl. Now in my school I'm considered a "beautiful mind child"

Any help? My guidance therapist beieves that I have aspergers⦠so anyways how can I calm my self and make eye contact?

Answer
There's a good chance you have Asperger's disorder, I myself have this, I'm not sure if you're aware of what it is but I'll give you a brief summary anyway; It basically impairs your ability to socialize, make eye contact, get jokes, sarcasm etc. With this disorder often comes OCD like habits, I have a few 'quirks' myself.

I can't make eye contact because to me it's disturbing, almost like the person is x-raying me or staring into my soul. I talk like a robot, I pace like 3-4 miles a day in deep thought. I can't understand most jokes, can't stand yellow things, takes me all y energy not to go crazy when an ambulance or motorbike passes etc.

Does any of that sound like you? Most with this disorder generally have higher IQs also. I can't talk to people when I need to but I'd rather be by myself for the sake of simplicity, I find that I get on with other people like me quite easily and it's never really awkward.

I'd bet if we met in real life it wouldn't be awkward. All I can suggest is try talking to people more and put yourself in social situations, sit at the center of the class instead of the back corner, things like this make it easier to talk to people I suppose but by answering this question it's really the blind leading the blind because as I said, I'm no social God either.

Lastly, the ''Beautiful Mind Child'' is an amazing way of putting how you are imo, I'd say you're the best kind of different. :)

Take care,

Connor.

why are some geographical areas seemingly more 'green' than others?

here in the states, many of the 'good ideas' discussed here on YA are already being implemented in places like washington, oregon, minnesota... but you seldom see any mention of interest in many of the other parts of the nation.

what exactly is it about certain parts of the USA (or please feel free to use your country if you're not an american) that make them more open than others to 'green' ideas like sustainability, permaculture, and ecologically sound planning? is it the people living there? the physical environment they're in? the experience and proximity of native american populations who historically respect the earth? is it that the presence of a few enlightened individuals in a locality is enough to make that much of a difference?

and if i'm wrong, tell me why you think so! thanks in advance.

Ive talk to some people about the ninja 250 most kids, i guess you could say 16-18years old always say that its a weak bike. i dont understand why people would always say that. I've drive mine on the high way and everything i cruse about 75-80 and the Rpms are around 8-9 it has power to pass. I like it, but why do people say its not a high way bike?

Answer
There are a lot of people that like to talk about things they have no knowledge of.

Have fun riding, that is all that matters. If you want, tease the naysayers about not putting many miles on their bikes, while you rack up time on yours. Have the numbers on the odometer to back up your claims. I ran into a guy with a great looking R1 that was a couple years old with like 5,000 miles on it. I accidentally said something about how it's almost time for the third oil change and offended him. Ah well, get out and ride your bike!

I have 300 dollars to spend on a mountain bike. What should I look for?

Beaser

I used to race BMX and Mountain Bikes competitively when I was a kid but it has been years since biking. I recently was given a free Murray bike which is about the heaviest and junkiest bike I have ever ridden on. I used to ride Cannondale and Trek. Unfortunately with 300 dollars I know I am very limited for my selection.

What, if anything can I get for 300 dollars or less that would be a decent bike? I ran across a gentleman selling a 2005 GT mountain bike with cyclops trainer and road tires/accessories (odometer, etc) in a package deal for 250. I did a little research and it seems that would be a really good deal. Should I check it out? Or any other recommendations? It's been awhile and I want to jump back into it now that I have located some good trails within an hours drive of my new location.

Thanks again.

Answer
Used is your best bet at that price range. Make sure the GT is the correct size frame. I would also check the local ebay and Craig's list for a good used shop quality bike. If I lived hours from trails I would look for something more road friendly. Hybrids are good on the road and can be ridden dirt and gravel bike paths.

I would like to start bike riding to shed some baby weight what are the best bike trailer/bike combos?

best kids trailer bikes

best kids trailer bikes image

Yeah Momma

i need a bike and want to buy a bike trailer, what type of bike should be used?

Answer
- how much do you want to/can you spend?
- what kind of trailer - cargo or kid?
- how long and where do you want to ride (urban/country, flat/hilly/mountainous)?
- commuting or sports/training?
- what's your weight - and do you do any kind of sports?
- are you fixed on a bike/trailer combo, or would a (two or three wheeled) bakfiets be a practical alternative?

Unless you want to lay down at least 4k$/â¬, there's no sense in talking about 'best'. You can start thinking about 'good' (enough for everyday use) with 2k$/⬠and either the willingness to learn basic maintenance or a friendly LBS within reach.

As a short guide to what I'd consider best (I'll just throw in a few buzzwords, use google or come back here if you want to know more):
- steel frame, touring geometry, Rohloff dropouts
- Rohloff internal geared rear hub
- SON front hub generator
- Edelux front bike light, b&m rear light
- Magura hydraulic disc brakes
- disc brake rims, Schwalbe Marathon Supreme tires in 26x2.00, DD stainless spokes
- Brooks leather saddle
- closed chain box, e.g. Hebie Chainglider

That'll cut down the yearly maintenance to the gear oil change and regular inspection (and occasional exchange) of brake pads and chain.

- Weber hitch
- brand trailer - for kids, Chariot or Croozer, for cargo, Roland or Carry Freedom

I want to make a bike trailer for my kids, how do i get a universal bike attachment?

How to deal with children eating to much?

INNEEDOFAD

I babysit a newly 8 year old boy M-Th 7:30pm-7:30pm. The kid is severly overweight, about 2-3 times bigger than his classmates. His grandpa who is his main guardian is morbidly obese, has sleep apnea (where is spell check when you need it), a thyroid disorder, and possibly diabetes. Even with his health problems he does not seem to care what his grandchild eats and contributes to making it unhealthier by buy dozens of cupcakes, gallons of ice cream, mcdonalds/dominos for dinner 3/4 or more nights a week. I just watched the kid I watch eat a nacho lunchable, a cupcake, chocolate ice cream, a diet pepsi, three corn dogs, and dry cereal. This was all after he had dinner and all within 2 hours. What do I do?

Answer
Yikes. Take him for walks , ride bikes anything, as much as you can. Don't let him eat any if that junk when he is with you.
Teach him to read the serving sizes to get him to cut down on his own. Insist he eats at the table only so he does not snack by the tv etc.
Read children books to him about eating healthy.
Maybe he is bored and eats to pass the time. Can you help him find a hobby such as legos, drawing so his hand are busy.

My family is travelling in Berlin, GE this summer. I can't find a nice hotel centrally located in the city. We have 3 kids(ages;6, 3 and <1 y old). Are we counted as 2 adults and 2 kids? What is the hotel policy of a 6 month old baby? Are children that age counted as 1 guest?

Answer
Jason first off most places in Europe do not charge for children under 12 as long as they stay in the parents room.

Secondly try this site for a hotel in Berlin:
http://www.accorhotels.com/accorhotels/index.html
They have hotels all over Europe and spreading out across the world now.

Accror hotels offer everything from super cheap F1 hotels with shared baths upto 5 star hotels. We normally stay in the IBIS catagory when as a couple and if I am on the road with my bike and friends week book a step below in the ETAP hotels.

In January we stayed at the IBIS Potsdamer Platz. It was inbetween an ETAP and a SUITEHOTEL which are both Accor hotels. They offer a parking garage much cheaper then parking on the street. It is 2 blocks from Check Point Charlie and buses stop right infront of the hotels.

I would also suggest for your visit that you all buy the A,B,C, tickets for public trans. It cost Euro 6 pp per day and you can ride all over Berlin and surrounding areas like Potsdam (Sansucci Gardens and palace a must see!!). THe tickets are good on all modes of public transportation.
Bus = Bus Small square sign with route number
U-Bahn -Subway (sometimes above ground) Circle with "U"
S-Bahn - Trolley (but sometimes more like trains) Circle with "S"
Bahn - Trains Pinkish sign with "DB"
Here is a site for the S-Bahn with maps. They are color coded and within a few minutes most people can navigate with them. http://www.s-bahn-berlin.de/englisch/

What is a good age for kids to start riding their bike?

Nicnac

What age do u think a child should be taught to ride a bike with training wheels? without training wheels?
What age do u think is appropriate for a kid to ride their bike into town with an adult or an older kid like a teenager maybe?
What age do u think is appropriate for a kid to be able to ride a bike downtown themselves?

any other thoughts about kids riding bikes?

Answer
it varies and depends how motivated the child is. my kids started riding w/ training wheels at 3 and w/o between 4 and 6 (some of my kids were more cautious and others were more motivated). they biked into town (maybe 4 miles for us) with an adult from about 5 or 6. as for by themselves, they haven't yet. my oldest is 10 and she sometimes bikes short distances around the neighborhood with a friend.

other thoughts: helmets are not optional. (speaking as someone who got a concussion riding my bike!)

I need to rent a dirt bike for my child but I don't know where. If anyone have any ideas please feel free to comment.

Answer
Rent one? Why would you do that? You're going to introduce him to a sport that he loves, then he can't have his own bike. Renting a dirt bike is the biggest mistake you can make. Check on Craigslist for some cheaper ones. Remember, if it's from the 90s or so, it doesn't mean it's a piece of shit. Just check it out first.

Oh, and I think there MIGHT be 2 or 3 places in the whole US to rent dirtbikes. Companies hate the liability because you can kill yourself on them so easily.

The Pope's Chauffeur?

Arnold G

After getting all of Pope Benedict's luggage loaded into the limo, (and he doesn't travel light), the driver notices the Pope still standing on the curb.

"Excuse me, Your Holiness," says the driver," Would you please take your seat so we can leave?"

"Well, to tell you the truth," says the Pope, "they never let me drive at the Vatican when I was a cardinal, and now that I'm Pope, I'd really like to drive today."

"I'm sorry, Your Holiness, but I cannot let you do that. I'd lose my job! And what if something should happen?" protests the driver, wishing he'd never gone to work that morning.

"Who's going to tell? Besides, there might be something extra in it for you," says the Pope with a smile.

Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decision when, after exiting the airport, the Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 105 mph.

(Remember, he's German.)

"Please slow down, Your Holiness!" pleads the worried driver, but the Pope keeps the pedal to the metal until they hear sirens. "Oh, Dear God, I'm gonna lose my license -- and my job!" moans the driver.

The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop approaches, but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle, and gets on the radio. "I need to talk to the Chief," he says to the dispatcher.

The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he's stopped a limo going a hundred and five.

"So bust him," says the Chief.

"I don't think we want to do that, he's really big," said the cop.

The Chief exclaimed," All the more reason!"

"No, I mean really important," said the cop with a bit of persistence.

The Chief then asked, "Who ya got there, the Mayor?"

Cop: "Bigger."

Chief: " The Governor?"

Cop: "Bigger."

Chief: "The President?"

Cop: "Bigger."

"Well," said the Chief, "Who is it?"

Cop: "I think it's God!"

The Chief is stumped, " You been drinking, John? "

Cop: " No Sir."

Chief : " Then what makes you think it's God?"

Cop: "He's got the Pope as a chauffeur."

Star if you liked it. :D

Answer
lol....here's one for u

On Christmas morning a cop on horseback is sitting at a traffic light, and next to him is a kid on his shiny new bike. The cop says to the kid, "Nice bike you got there. Did Santa bring that to you?"

The kid replies, "Yeah."

The cop says, "Well, next year tell Santa to put a tail-light on that bike."

The cop then proceeds to issue the kid a $20.00 bicycle safety violation ticket.

The kid takes the ticket and before he rides off says, "By the way, that's a nice horse you got there. Did Santa bring that to you?"

Humoring the kid, the cop says, "Yeah, he sure did."

The kid continued, "Well, next year tell Santa to put the dick underneath the horse, instead of on top."

Question about Banana Seat Bike?

TheFreak

My girlfriend has an old Banana Seat Bike. I can't remember the Brand, but I think its a Schwinn Classic Stingray. It's a 20 inch. Well this bike was bought Brand new in like the 70's when her mom was a kid. It was passed down to my girlfriend 20 years later. Now her sister wants it, but the seat is screwed up and its got some scratches on it. I can paint the Frame but I don't know how to refurbish the seat. Like it still has the foam it just need the vinyl on top. How can I fix it? I tried looking for a new one online, but I can't find any nearby so if someone could just tell me how to replace the vinyl, that would be great.

Answer
If you don;t want to buy a replacement, take it to an auto upholsterer.

What is the difference between fixed gear and single speed road bikes?

.

The only thing I know is that you can coast on single speed, and you pedal continuously on a fixie. I haven't ridden a bike (I live in the suburbs so I mostly drive) since middle school. Only rode a road bike a couple times.

Here are a few questions:

What is the difference, feel-wise, of riding them? For example, does one go faster, or smoother than the other?

I hear fixies are dangerous but only because a lot of people who have fixies ride brakeless. Can I install brakes on fixed gear? And if so, what brakes would be best? I rode a bike as a child but it was not really a road bike, just a generic kid's bike, and I am used to pushing down on the pedals to brake.

Which bike would be better for riding in the city of Chicago? I've rode in traffic with my friends but had borrowed someone's mountain bike because I don't own one, and that was a workout trying to keep up.

Which one would be easier to maintain? I'm a beginner so my boyfriend could help me with maintenance, but I don't want to spend too much to keep maintaining my bike.

Thank you so much! All the help is much appreciated. I'm moving to Chicago in the fall and would like to start riding. Thanks!
Oh, and can I always change the gears? Like could I start off with a single speed and then once I'm used to that, if I ever want to try fixed gear, could I change the whole thing into that? As I said, I'm a beginner so I have to learn everything about bikes and I don't really know much lol.

Are there any 24inch cruiser bikes?

kids bicycle 24 inch image

Adam

My dad is in need of a new bike and really likes the older "vintage" style cruiser bikes. He says they are very comfortable and the high handle bars do not make his back hurt like traditional bikes do. The only problem is that he is about 5'8" and says the 26 inch bikes are too tall for him. All of the bike stores where I live only have 26" and up size cruiser bikes.

I'm wondering if there are 24" cruiser style bikes that are designed for men. He is very well built, and I wonder if the boys bikes will be suitable for him. I also cannot find any that have multiple gear ratios, as would be necessary for longer rides.

Or as an alternative, could I purchase a 26" bike and just put on 24" rims and tires, or would there be problems with this?

Thanks.
Thanks for the advice, you all have convinced me. Now to convince him.

Answer
He's PLENTY tall to get on a bike with 26" tires. 24" tires? He'd be riding a kid's bicycle with his knees up in his chest. Not only uncomfortable - but downright dangerous! G.T.A.B.S. Go To A Bicycle Shop. A REAL bicycle shop. Test ride a few.

Rigid Bicycle Stand Alternatives?

Oliver K

Im currently involved in a project that needs to support a a standard 24" pedal bicycle while a person rides it (basically a stationary bicycle). The project needs to be designed for excessive side to side loads because little kids are going to ride it and probably not ride it properly. Im looking for other options then rather just mounting supports at both axles, or if anybody has a different idea of how to go about this

Answer
The bike is already designed to take its loads through the axle mounting points, so why not use those?

On another note, if the bike uses a standard size circular cross-section tube, and it's a steel frame (I know, these aren't as common any more), then you can put machinable shaft collars at a couple of points on the frame or even the seat post, and mount those to whatever support structure you dream up. While I was working in a group designing a handcycle that would attach to an existing wheelchair, we did some testing on shaft collars clamped onto the steel tubing that's common in bicycles. We found that any rubber or spacer material that seems like it would help it "grip" decreases the strength a great deal. With a closely matched bare shaft collar on a painted one inch steel tube, we had a 200 pound engineer hanging off of an 8 foot long cheater bar trying to shift the shaft collar- and it didn't budge.

You could probably get the job done safely and effectively with these shaft collars, but something I'd like to emphasize is that when you're throwing weight around, something has to give. If the bike is totally rigid, it will fatigue the rider and seem very unnatural. Any shock or impulse loads that are not taken up in some amount of compliance or damping can add up to very high local stresses- either at your mounting points, are at other points in the bicycle that would have previously had an acceptable factor of safety.

What kind of bike do i need for a hilly neighborhood?

kids bikes usa image

Iam Cherry

I live in a neighborhood with a lot of different sizes of hills (small, steelp, in between) and i want to get a biike that is good for just riding around the neighborhood and can go up and down the hills. i also prefer a bike with brakes on the handles. as for gears, i know nothing about( where they are, what its used for, or what they even do and if it will serve any kind of purpose to me) im not a PRO biker and im not trying to be and i dont plan on riding every single day ( maybe 3-4 times a week). i just want to ride it to simply travel around the neighborhood. the sidewalks are really smooth as well if that helps. and theres a lot of turns. so based on all thaat, what kind of bike should i get?

Answer
Number 1 rule...stay OFF sidewalks! Sidewalks are for pedestrians. Streets are for "VEHICLES" - such as the bicycle. Little kids learn how to ride on sidewalks. R U still a little kid? In many parts of the country it's highly ILLEGAL to ride on sidewalks, i.e. Chicago, Manhattan Borough of New York, any business district in St. Louis, etc.

You NEED something like a hybrid or pure road bike. As you are a newbie, I'd go with a hybrid. Bicycle gears are EASY to comprehend. On a typical 21 or 24 speed bike, you have a triple crankset up front & either 7 or 8 gears on the rear cog.

1st gear up front is used for uphill climbs & slow conditions. On the rear, use ONLY gears 1 through 4 while in 1st gear up front.

2nd gear up front is the one most used for flat terrain & rolling hills. Use any of the 7 rear gears. Or on an 8 speed cassette - use gears 2 through 7.

3rd gear up front is for very fast or downhill conditions. Use ONLY gears 4 through 7 on a 7 speed cog & only gears 5 through 8 on an 8 speed cassette.

Why? This prevents "cross chaining" the bike - putting too much lateral (side-to-side) stress on the chain, gears & derailleurs.

G.T.A.B.S. Means Go To A Bicycle Shop - where test riding a bike before the sale is both FREE & ENCOURAGED. Avoid discount stores at all cost. Minimum wage "associates" who know nothing & can't even assemble a bike correctly. Start looking at bikes like a Raleigh Cadent FT1 (man) or an Alysa FT1 (woman).
http://www.raleighusa.com/bikes/fitness/cadent-ft1-13/
http://www.raleighusa.com/bikes/fitness/alysa-ft1-13/

Add a rear rack & either a trunk bag or panniers (saddle bags) and you have a nice "commuter bicycle". http://s382.photobucket.com/user/OldHippie_01/media/2013%20Raleigh%20Cadent%20FT1/100_0364.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0

What are some skills and hobbies girls like to see guys know and do?

Aaron

For example how some girls like guys who could play guitar,or can cook, or guys who are good with kids.Girls, what skills or hobbies do yous personally like to see a guy do/know?

Answer
A guy who's good with kids is always a big bonus, there's something very attractive and endearing about a man who can show a kind, paternal and nurturing side towards children (including and especially children who aren't genetically his own)
As another poster said, it is instinctive for most women to look (at some point) for "father material" in a man so if he is a good provider and can interact well with children then he instantly scores some major points.

I like to see guys who are a bit adventurous in their hobbies, I'm an outdoor girl at heart and I'd love to see a guy that can enjoy hiking, camping, dirt biking, cave spelunking, diving, someone who could keep up and enjoy a bit of roughing it and risk taking. If I could find a guy that would go storm chasing with me on a major road trip across the USA, who'd stand on the ice and watch the northern lights or who'd stand next to the lava streams on Hawaii while we dared to get as close as possible then I'd consider him more than perfect.

If he's a guitar player than great, can he teach me? I have a guitar but I'm not too good yet, I could teach him keyboard/piano in exchange.
I admire guys that have the patience to teach as well as listen and learn, open-mindedness is a must.

Someone who understands the concept of personal space, he does his thing and I do mind, we don't always have to do them together and hours, days, weeks or even months apart does not necessarily mean that our relationship is going to the dogs.

I'm also a major geek/nerd at heart, I love gadgets and electronics. I could happily spend hours torturing some poor Sim on my computer or blowing the head off some enemy in a first person shoot-'em-up, I do not consider him a loser if he likes Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, DC etc. and do in fact enjoy a guy who's passionate in his interests.

Honestly I don't really care what type of interests he has as long as they're not illegal or seriously taboo and he's genuine about them.

kids bike with gears
on The Unsuccessfulness Of Repeated Fasts Consider'd And Apply'd: A ...
kids bike with gears image

Yeah Momma

i need a bike and want to buy a bike trailer, what type of bike should be used?

Do I really have to spend that kind of money on a bike?

Emmi

I decided to get a bike to commute to work. I live very close now (less than 2 miles) and would like to bike instead of walk. Doing some research leads me to believe that I have to spend about 300 to 400 dollars on a bike.
Any thoughts on that?
I would like a bike with some gears, but nothing fancy.
Thanks for the input.

Answer
Just like $150 basketball shoes don't make you able to slam dunk; a $1000 bike will not make you Lance Armstrong. There is a happy medium of bike quality and price. Walmart and Target don't have anyone that is skilled in bike assembly, just a high school kid that can kinda follow directions when he feels like it, when he's not too pissed off at his girlfriend. Try Performance bike, its a chain bike store that has qualified mechanics that put your bike together, they have much better bikes overall and yes you will spend more on a bike you will have something that will stay in adjustment. Remember you are trusting your life to the bike, brakes, steering etc are critical components, especially if you are going to bike to work a few days a week. Performance has lifetime tuneups on their bikes so you get the long term value compared to the discount store.
