my 3.5 year old knocked out her front tooth riding her bike, BTDT moms help?

Q. I strapped her helmet on right.. gave her a little push, she was so excited riding a 2 wheeler.. and has been doing well since we started almost 3 weeks ago. 2 days ago she lost control of the handlebars and fell, smacking her face on the pavement and knocking out a front tooth.

No stitches, a cut bottom lip and her chin has scrapes..thank god she had her helmet on so her head was fine.

My problem is that.. I Was probably crying harder than she was. I tried to stay calm but I was terrified at all the blood, once we got to the emergency room and saw the dentist the next day the doctors said an antibiotic is needed incase of infection.

My question is, why do I feel so horrible about this. I cannot let myself get over it. Her falling, I want to protect my baby, but i know i cant stop any bad thing from happening. Im told this was not under my control. that any kid learning to ride a bike can fall. But I feel so guilty and I keep replaying it over and over in my head. Its making me sick.

To top it off the poor kid has a missing front tooth now and it will be like that till shes at least 7...UGH... i want to throw the bike away now!

Any advice from those whove been there and had a little one lose a tooth unnaturally?
AHH I know.. the helicopter helmet.. im trying not to be a helicopter mom.. actually im normally not.. which is why i figured id let her give riding a 2 wheeler a shot.

I also lost my first tooth at 4...I had my two front teeth in for my school pics in kindergarten! Well halfway in. my 7 year olds front teeth look like mine when I was 5.

Anyhow.. I am going to look into a football helmet for her! LOL just kidding.

thanks for all the great responses.. I really appreciate it.. and ya know.. shes pretty darn cute with that missing tooth. Today she figured out that a straw fits in that spot perfectly. So proud of my strong little girl!

thanks again!

Answer
Kids will have accidents. It's not your fault. When she is 20 you will look back at pictures and remember this. She will be ok. Her teeth will come in fine and kids at that young age don't judge too often.

my 3 and 1/2 yr old son does not want to wear clothes. also ever since his 1 and a 1/2 yr old sister made a?

babyherc1r

deal about his potty training he still wants to use a diaper. how can i get him to wear his clothes?

Answer
My 3 year old does the same thing. I even caught her outside during the summer riding her bike without pants or underwear on! I thought it would get better in the winter, but as we have an infant in the house we have to keep the house warm. It is a struggle everyday for me with her clothes. I do daycare for my sisters 3 kids all under 3 so she will strip down and I wont even notice as I'm involved in the other kids. Lately I've kept a VERY close eye on her, when I notice pants coming off, "no keep them on its cold in the house" or whatever you tell your son. With my daughter I have to be consistent and keep a close eye on her, today we did pretty good. Getting dinner ready I found she had stripped and so told her to put your clothes on so we can sit and eat dinner. We don't want any naked butts at the dinner table" I got an "Ohhhh Ok" like maybe it clicked? Who knows, good luck to you

Anyone know any good online chat games?

Seppala Di

My friends and I decided we want to all play an online chat game together, and I couldnt really find a good game to play. So you all know, I am not a child so I dont want anything like club penguin. I was looking for something like IMVU or Second Life where the focus wasnt nessicarly on fighting and leveling up. After a few hours of research.. I still have failed to find an interesting game for us all to play. Anyone know of any good games? Preferably free.

Answer
Second Life (SL) isn't fighting and leveling up at all. Because SL allows people to customise the virtual world to suit their needs, it IS possible to create systems for role-playing where you have fighting and levels, but the nature of SL demands that the people who want to do this have their own area for such activities so they don't bother those who don't share their interests. This means you may never stumble upon a role-playing area, although you may encounter someone who role-plays in SL. The places you choose to frequent will dictate the types of people you meet. If you like rock music, you'll hang out at rock clubs and meet like-minded people. If you like sailing, you'll go to a sailing simulation area. If you are a shop-a-holic, you'll be in one of the thousands of fashion stores in SL.

If you're worried about role-players intruding on your privacy, maybe you don't realise quite how large Second Life is. Last time they totaled up the land area of SL (to scale, of course) it was something like twice the size of the city of San Fransisco and it's suburbs. The land is split up into square regions and each region is roughly the size of a small village. People just like yourself buy or rent these regions (yes - with real money) and build and landscape the area. Some are private and you can only go there if you're invited, but that probably takes up only around 15% of the total land area. Most places are open to visitors. These places can be shops, music clubs, parks, live music venues, sailing clubs, or any number of things. In SL, you will find every sort of activity you can imagine, from church groups to sex clubs. There are virtual college campuses owned by real life colleges and universities; museums and art galleries, recreations of real life places (Paris, London, New York, Berlin);vast areas for sailing, skiing, flying planes, racing cars, riding bikes and horses; political interest groups; health advice centres; areas themed on TV shows or movies; regions owned by major world companies (such as Sony, the BBC, Mazda) and much more. The UK pop band Duran Duran own several regions where they perform live concerts, or band members DJ favourite tunes (and yes, it's the real band members playing the avatars). Yoko Ono held an art exhibition in SL in 2011 and Phil Collins performed a live concert in SL in 2012.

So SL will have what you and your friends are looking for ... somewhere. It's just a matter of joining, creating an avatar and exploring until you find the sorts of places you like. Once you have your avatars made, take a look at the Second Life Destination Guide for ideas of places to go to. Look at the Chat Hotspots section (Personally, I would recommend The Blarney Stone). You can find the guide here: http://secondlife.com/destinations/

At what age do most kids learn to ride a bike with training wheels?

junebugbab

My oldest son is 4 (as of June) and we got him a bike when he was 3 and he just couldn't figure it out.. He barely started riding right around his birthday and now he is doing much much better. It does have training wheels of course.

His younger brother is 2 1/2 (turned 2 at the end of April) he immediately showed jealousy of and interest in his brothers bike so 2 weeks ago we decide to buy him one also. We figured he would just sit on it for a while and probably not learn for a year or so but to our amazement he learned in just 5 20-30 minute sessions!!! He now rides at about 80% the efficiency level of his older brother.

I am just curious if the younger is just super cordinated or if his brother was just a late learner. When do most kids learn to ride a bike with training wheels.

Also, at what age would it be appropriate to take the training wheels off? My husband is thinking of taking them off in about 4 months for our older son and 6 months or so for our younger son.. I am a bit worried about this because I don't think I've ever seen a 3 year old riding a bike without training wheels.. Is he expecting to much?

(P.S. neither of my children ever had a tricycle or anything with pedals)

Answer
My twin girls started with tricycles when they were two and bicycles with training wheels at three. They were barely able to ride the bicycles till age 4. (One of their friends was able to zoom around without training wheels at age 3, but he had an older sister.)

We finally lost the training wheels at age 5. I took them to a flat field in the park and let them learn and fall on the grass with great success.

Good luck!

Answer
Anytime between 2 and 4 is reasonable for riding with training wheels. Some kids just are more motivated or get the coordination to do the pedaling sooner than others.

It's the same for taking off the training wheels. I know kids who learned at 7 and kids who were zooming around at 3 without them. Generally younger siblings start sooner.

Teaching an older kid to ride a bike?

Reality *

My daughter is nine and somehow very tall -- 5' -- and a couple of injuries kept her from learning to ride a bike sooner. How do I teach her to ride one now, as I don't think there are training wheels for someone her size.

Answer
Our daughter was ten when we adopted her from overseas. She'd never ridden a bike before. We bought a bike that fit her size, then got training wheels at a bicycle shop. They do make them large enough for older children, but you can't get them at Walmart or anything like that. A regular bike store should carry them.

Good luck!

Good to buy a bike?

terse

I am going nuts trying to buy a bike. I am going to bike shops and getting very conflicting information. I don't know if I am getting fed a line of BS because someone is trying to make a commission or what.

My situation is that I am a good athlete that is new to cycling. I had a bike when I was a kid, but haven't been on a bike in years. I am a 30 year old male, 6'2" and 240 lbs. I am not looking to join the X-Games or Tour de France. I want a good bike that I can ride around on for excercise and enjoyment, mainly on pavement, but would also like to be able to go off road a bit. I would ride 3 to 6 days a week. One salesman told me the Trek Navigator 3.0 was the way to go. A different shop told me the Trek 7200 hybrid. Another shop told me to get a Gary Fisher mountain bike. Last shop I went to was hardcore about a Fuji bike. I am trying to educate myself and make a smart purchase, but it is difficult with all of the conflicting information.
A lot of great information here. To add a few notes:
When I am talking about going offroad, I mean a dirt trail in the woods. It is not specifically a bike path. There are some places with rocks and big roots to go over. It is nothing dangerous looking though.

I don't really a pre-set budget. I am not opposed to spending good money as long as I am buying the right thing. Ideally I would like to stay under $2,000, but that is not my main concern.

Is there a certain size bike you suggest? I think it can vary between mountain bikes, hybrids, etc.

Thanks again for all of the great input. If any of you guys that work in bike shops are in the New Jersey area, please let me know. I'd be happy to buy my bike there.

Answer
Very good answers here for a change.

I'll just add a few pieces...

I would personally suggest you go for a mountain bike. The hybrids or cyclo-cross bikes are fine, but seem to do neither terribly well.

The only real problem with riding a mountain bike on the road is rolling resistance. You'll work harder on pavement, but so what. If it is for fitness, who cares.

Moutnain bikes are certainly more comfortable. Later, if you want to do a triathalon, or become a roadie, you can invest in another bike. Mountain bikes are very good all purpose bikes, with good versatility and can take abuse.

You fall into what is affectionately known as the Clydesdales -- a big guy. Still, most anyone under 300 pounds won't have an issue with a frame unless you are dropping off of cliffs, getting big air.

And yes, bike shops absolutely will try to sell you on the their bikes, and disparage their competitors. Margins are slim, and bike sales are flat right now.

Your BUDGET will go a long way toward determining what you need. Do not go for a $200 Wal-Mart or discount bike. But, you don't have to spend $2,000 either. You can probably find a very nice hardtail that would meet all your needs in the $8000-$1100 range, perhaps less.

The vast majority of "name brand" bikes are made within miles of each other in Taiwan. They are all perfectly good, and offer good value. Bikes from Giant, Specialized, Trek, Gary Fischer, Kona, etc are all good choices.

I like Mountain Bike Review (link below). You do get biased opionions, but can at least screen the bikes you are looking at, and see if users have noticed fatal flaws. Read up, and you might be able to narrow your choices.

Try the bikes you are interested in. It's rare these days, but some shops do have demo models you can borrow or rent.

Don't be afraid to ask if they will discount a bike. There is a lot a shop can do to earn your business. Just reward them with your service needs later.

Good luck!

EDIT: Have a shop size you. It's the best way, and you can then feel the difference in person, rather than using the formula from a book.

I want a BMX Bike cheapish...?

i want a semi good bmx bike.

I had a look at some BMX websites, and they don't have anything in that price range. And it looks like the bikes under $200.00 are small kids bikes.

I'm sorry, but if you want a Name Brand bike, you will have to pay at least $250.00 to $300.00

Unless you buy a used bike. Sometimes I see good bikes at garage sales. Once I saw a Redline BMX for $50.00 at a garage sale.

How do you fix bounce houses? (You know the things kids bounce inside on.)?

Hot Shot

For my church has a little bounce house and a big kid got on it and it got a hole in it. So if you know a way that it could be fixed let me know or where I could get a cheap one.

Answer
Have you considered repairing it as you would a rubber raft, fishing waders or a bicycle tire? There are repair kits available for those items. I don't know if the glue or rubber cement would be compatible with your bounce house though.

Bicycle sizes?

Elbert

I have a boy that's soon to be 8. He is an average sized kid and my wife and I are thinking about getting a bike for his birthday. The problem is, we don't know diddly about how to fit a bike for him. There isn't a bike store that we can go to for him to try one out and that would definitely spoil his birthday surprise! So how are bikes sized and which one would be ideal for his age? Thanks.

Answer
I would stick with a 20 inch bmx style bike.
That is highly recommended. An 8 year old son would probably put a lot of wear and tear on a bike. But, bmx bicycles are made to take a beating and can withstand a lot more than other types of bike. So, that should be ideal for him and, to make it even better, by having a stronger bike, (bmx) you save yourself from fixing many strenuous annoying repairs that without the right tools, can be pretty expensive to fix. (THIS IS MORE COMMON WITH BIKES THAT AREN'T BMX.)
When I was 8 years old, I had a 20 inch bmx bike. It fit me fine, and I was actually quite short at the time. I grew into it a little bit more, fit me perfectly and lasted me many years.

To save yourself from spoiling the surprise, you are frankly just way better off with a 20 inch. bmx bike.

I guarantee you that's the kind he would want. That's the kind of bike that's popular among the youth now a days. Plus, if for some odd reason he is un-capable of reaching the pedals, you can always simply adjust the height of the seat.

I recommend these 3 brands which you can find in practically any store that sells bikes. "Mongoose" very strong, been around for many years. "NEXT" very durable as well. And of course, "Schwinn".

I hope this helped you out on the selection of a bike for your son, a bicycle is a great gift.

Can I put 14" wheels on a kids bike?

pmondrag

My 4 year old daughter is ready for a two-wheel bike w/training wheels. When we went shopping for bikes I noticed she is way too big for a 12" bike but she felt very unstable and hesitant on the 16" wheeled bike. It looked too big for her. They had a couple of 14" bikes at Toys R Us, none of which we liked, but she seemed most at ease on those and seemed to be best fit. Instead of buying a 14" bike this summer and another 16" bike next, I was wondering if I could buy a 16" bike (that we actually like) and just put 14" wheels on it until she is ready for the 16" wheels. And if I can, where do I (and can I) find 14" wheels that makes sense it terms of cost?? Doing custom-order would defeat the purpose.
Thanks so much for the feedback. I hadn't thought about the frame sitting lower. I'll probably find a cheap used $12 just so she learns and then when she is confident switch her to the 16" - who knows maybe she'll be ready for it before I know it! I'd rather her be confident as you mentioned. Thanks so much!

Answer
This might work. You need to keep in mind, everything about a 16" bike is scaled up. Everything is bigger, not just the wheels.

Anyhow, the first problem will be with hand brakes. The hand brakes won't be in the proper position to squeeze the rim of the wheel if you put a 14" wheel on a bike made for 16" wheels.

Putting 14" wheels on will also put the pedals closer to the ground which may cause your daughter to drag a pedal on the when turning. If she drags hard enough, it might flip her right off!

Finally, finding 14" wheels is going to be a pain. Consumers just don't go out a buy 14" wheels. Thus, I suspect, if you can find the wheels, they will be cost prohibitive.

In my humble opinion, a small bike is easier for a kid to learn to ride. They feel more in control of a bike they can put their feet down with. In the dear, dead days of my youth, we started our kids on a little tiny bike with 12" wheels. We promised to get them a "real" bike as when they learned to ride. In next to no time, the training wheels came off and they learned to ride. Good to our word, we got them "real" sized bikes and they were pleased as could be with themselves. My daughter was just over 4 when she learned to ride and my son was about 4 1/2.

Hope this helps.

Are 20 inch mountain bikes only for kids?

Joseph

So I'm 14, almost 15, and also fairly tall. Lately I've been looking to buy a new bike, and I started looking at 20 inch wheel mountain bikes. Now I don't know much about bikes, but I figure that these kinds of bikes would be good for me because I liked how its a small size with 20 inch wheels like a normal bmx bike, but I also liked that it had suspension and the ability to change gears. I was getting ready to order one, but I noticed that the reviews mainly involved parents buying them as gifts for their 8-10 year old kid. Are these kinds of bikes really only meant for small children, and will I look stupid if I buy one for someone as old and as tall as I am?

Answer
Those are little kids bikes you want one with 26" wheels.

What is the deal with kids and cell phones?

Jenintn

WHY do all these parents buy their spoiled kids cell phones, and then gripe when they run up a $400 bill? The idea of 9, 10, 11yr.olds having their own phone is RIDICULOUS! The same with thong panties and padded bras! Why buy this crap for a KID? They may as well let them hang a sign on their neck that says "COME AND GET IT BIG BOYS!"
When my 14, and 11yr. old asked me when they could get a cell phone, I told them "When you get a job and pay for it yourself"!

Answer
I totally agree with you. Thats why kids are like they are today. Most kids today, are selfish, spoiled brats, and ungrateful little shits. I mean why would a 9,10,11, even 12 year old need a cell phone??? they shouldnt be going out at these ages anyway!! they should be at home playing with there barbies, or watching tv, or riding bikes!!!! Parents today just are to nieve, and when there kids get older, it will only get worse. If its one thing that i cant stand- its being around selfish brats that are mean to there parents, and ungrateful. I think that this was a great question.

What's the best bike rack for a PT Cruiser?

elb

We have a PT Cruiser. The bike rack we got years ago that was supposed to work on it, didn't. Now we're getting back into cycling and only one bike will fit in the car at a time and there are two of us and two bikes.

We've looked at REI and seen the trunk racks, roof racks and hitch racks, but we want to find one we know will work before investing the money.

The previous rack that didn't work was supposed to go over the back of the Cruiser, which is sort of a hatchback.

The Cruiser does have the factory rack on the top, with two rails going from the front to the back of the vehicle and two bars that go from side to side. The side to side bars can be pushed along the front to back rails to make one cross bar or be split to make two.

We don't have a hitch, so we're trying not to have to get one to get a hitch bike rack.

Has anyone with a PT Cruiser had success with a bike rack?

Thanks for your help.

Answer
I haven't dealt specifically with a PT cruiser but I have dealt with bike racks for a multitude of vehicles, small, medium and large.

The easiest (in regards to purchase and installation) and probably the cheapest way to go would be to get parts that fit your factory roof rack. I have done this on both my wife's S-10 Blazer and my full size SUV using Thule and Yakima trays. Yakima sells universal cross-bar clamps to work with many of their models. If you are mechanically inclined, you will find the installation very easy.

The downsides of having the bikes on the roof are: A) decreased fuel economy; B) increased chance of low-clearance destruction; and, C) having to lift the bike, sometimes awkwardly, into position.

To explain A further, the increased height of the racks and bikes causes wind resistance. The wind resistance causes your engine to work harder and uses more fuel. Even when the racks are not holding bicycles, there will be a slight decrease in fuel economy.

As for B, if you do this, beware of low-hanging drive-through awnings and parking garages (including the one at home). With C, if you're strong and tall, there's no issue.

As for me, I eventually opted to put a 2" hitch receiver on my wife's truck and get a 4-bike hitch rack that we can swap between our 2 vehicles with ease. We have a Saris that holds the bikes by their wheels and doesn't require their removal. It is easily removable for trips to the carwash and stores easily. The bikes can be loaded at a height that even kids can handle and it causes no fuel economy difference.

Depending on how many miles you drive, it may be worthwhile to invest in the hitch receiver just for the fuel savings.

Oh, and check Craigslist before you buy new rack components. You might be able to find what you need, slightly used for a fraction of the price!

What is your 20 month old doing?

Jessi

I'm just curious what other 20 month olds are doing. My son is 20 months and he does alot.
He started standing at 7 months he started walking at almost 15 months. He pretty much went straight to running. Since then things have been crazy and fun.
He says alot of words. Some he says right off almost perfectly first try.
He loves trying to figure out how things work. He is a very smart monkey. We ride atvs all the time so he can already crank one completely by his self. He tries to kick start the dirt bikes too.
He does good brushing his teeth. He can undress his self and tries to dress his self back. He does pretty good with washing his self. He has 16 teeth.
He loves playing with cars. He's been making car sounds since he was 11 months old.
He's never been like alot of babies though. He's never cared about baby toys. If it doesn't look real he doesn't want it. He has his own opinion that's for sure.
He doesn't like to eat healthy food though. Sometimes he does good other time he doesn't wanna eat at all. He just tries to feed the dogs. He refuses to sleep by his self. He has to cuddle with mommy. He loves his stuffed animals. He loves to give sugar and hugs. He is the sweetest little monkey. He was born 25 days early weighing only 5lb 4oz. He was so little and he already weighs almost 30 pounds. He's not chunky at all though. He's actually quite scrawny. He loves eating breakfast. He's already weaned off his paci. He is a strong booger too. He had to get a lead test at 12 months and it took me holding his legs and one arm and two other ladies to hold him still.
I know all kids are different so I'm just curious what your 20 month olds do or did at that age. I'm not one of the moms who get worried about what my kid is or isn't doing. I understand that they develop at different rates and do different things at different times.

Answer
My baby is crazy! she started walking at 12 months! and has not stopped since! She can climb out of her crib and runs as fast as an adult. Anything that can be climbed - she's up it! You can't take your eyes of her in the supermarket because she is sat in the freezer ( true story).

I turned round once whilst driving and she wasn't there! My little girl had escaped from her car seat straps and was sitting on the car floor! Nearly gave me a seizure - pulled over straightaway!!! My little girl tells me what she is going to wear - "Dat one mama!"( that one mummy) or "No sker!" ( No skirt).

Her favourite food in the world is Kinder chocolate or dolly mixtures sweets! But she doesn't eat a lot in general ! I give her a bowl of healthy yummy pasta and she will grab a handful eat it and then shove the rest away!
(charming huh?)

She adores our dog! and will boss him around! Its is so cute! Also when we take him for a walk i will chuck a ball for the dog to chase and of course he will take off at the speed of light but my daughter will run after him!

She has her little temper tantrums and we have to be forceful with her as the terrible twos are approaching! :( She has been spending a lot of time on the naughty chair.

My child isn't chunky either! Quiet the opposite !

We sound like such proud Mamas!

Good luck for the future and Merry christmas!

Cheap Road bike?

Kristie L

Hi,
I need a road bike for an 18 mile race two weeks away. Other than that I will use it on a bike path and the road about 2 miles at a time. I really want a cheap bike, no more than $300. But now that Iâm researching, the one bike I thought I would get, the GMC Denali Women's Road Bike, people say itâs not a good bike. I cannot spend a lot of money. What will work? I really donât like that straight bar from the handle to the seat. Can I get away with a more angled bar? As a kid, I remembered borrowing a âboysâ bike and finding that bar annoying.

Also, this is a triathlon I doing. I will swim ½ mile first. I donât care about time or winning, as long as Iâm within what they allow. I just want to cross the finish line. I noticed that they sell triathlon suits good for all three parts of the race. Do people really leave a wet suit on for biking or do some people change into dry clothes? Is a wet bathing suit really uncomfortable will biking, running?

Thank you.

The Denali you mentioned is not a very good bike, I've seen them at Wally Mart ... BUT if you will hardly ride it then sure it's fine to get, it will work and for the ocassional 15 minute ride it's more than fine. Really cheap road bikes are very hard to find.

Many bikes are sold with a sloping top tubes now. The top tube slopes down towards the seat. That could be an option in many brands of bikes.

Isn't there anyway you could borrow a bike for this one time event? 18 miles isn't very long and to buy a bike that you really won't use seems a waste. Some bike shops will rent a bike for the day check it out. It just depends where you live. Same thing for the Tri suit. Buy it for a couple hours use? No way. Use a swim suit and you can throw on shorts over it if your modest for the ride/run. Make sure the shorts are NOT cotton, but made of anything that dries fast.

What have you been riding to train for this? You have done a little training??? Maybe?

From what you say this is a one time short Tri you want to do . Very cool, but borrow or rent if you can. Don't buy stuff you'll never use just to look cool. Be happy you want to do this and if you make the cut off Congrates to you.

Good Luck

Why does ever-body say baja's dirt bikes are bad for motocross?

Caleb

The suspension is fine i have jumped my baja 90cc dirt bike all the time.(good air) They also say the acceleration is bad, are you kidding me its just like a normal dirt bike's acceleration. My Friend has a honda 80cc dirt bike and we mess around race and sometimes i win the starts and some time he does. Some one tell me why people think there so bad.

Answer
Look Caleb I baja 90cc is a horrible bike to race. You have asked this question many times (which is ok but it gets old). I promise you if you race motocross with a 90cc baja you will not do good unless everybody else crashes. What is your good air you say you get? Probabbly no more that 5 feet. In motocross racing even in the beginner class you are jumping 15 feet high and 120 feet in distance. I am not joking your bike would break in half if it jumped that high which I dought it would even do. On a motocross track it is very loamy dirt. I ride a crf250r and it is a racing bike and is very hard to get through the dirt. Your baja would get stuck. The acceleration on your bike is not good enough for racing. You are probablly around 12 so you should be riding a 85cc 2 stroke out there. Those have good accelreation and is a racing bike. Trust be the accelration is not good. I

f you are racing with your freind and he has an 80cc and you win the starts great. You both have trail bikes though and on the starting gate of a motocross race (even in the beginner class) you are going agaist bike that are 85cc screaming 2 strokes that are made to race. I promose you a baja 90cc or any baja bike is not made to race. Go to a motocross track by you and watch how everybody races. You will see your bike is not good enough. On a motocross track in your class you are racing about 50 mph which your bike may be able to go that fast but the suspension, frame and everything on your bike could not take that abuse. Trust me Caleb a baja is not made to race. If you want to race look at buying a cr85, rm85, kx85, 85sx, yz85, or even a 4 storke crf150R. You many be thinking these bike only have 5 more cc than mine. Yes but these are liqued cooled bike with very good suspension and are fast, acceleration is good, and they have strong engines. That is why a Baja 90cc is a bad bike to race.

When I first wanted a dirt bike at 12 years old I wanted a bike for $1000 or less. I went up to some auto parts store and saw a baja 125. I told my dad I wanted it. He said are you sure and I said yes. We went home and though about it and I decided not. My dad reommended at kx100 instead. I though that bike is not good enough for racing but it was. That bike was $1200. It was much better, stronger, faster, better handeling, better suspension, than a baja. I am very glad I got the kx100 because I could race it on a motocross track(not just with friends in my back yard). I now got a crf250r and am happy. BUT TRUST ANYBODY WHO KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT MOTOCROSS. A BAJA 90CC CAN RACE (any dirt bike can race) BUT IS WILL NOT DO GOOD AT ALL AND WILL MOST LIKELY COME IN LAST PLACE.

Kids Bikes?

marie

Want to buy my nephew a new bike for his birthday. He will be turning 4. What should I look for? I know he needs trainning wheels, but don't know what size to look for.

Answer
If he's small or average for his age he will need a 12" bike. If on the larger side maybe a 16". Both normally come with training wheels. Best thing is to head over to Wal Mart, Target, Toy r Us etc. and see how they fit. If it's a surprise you can always buy one and take it back if not right. Make sure to not get something he will grow out of by fall.

I would not take a 4 yo to a bike shop - most don't even carry kiddie bikes anyway.

What size of bike??????

Jose R

I have a 4 year old girl I was wondering what the proper size of bike I should get

Answer
Kids bikes are denoted by wheel size (unlike adult bikes) Take her to a bike shop (or sporting goods store but NOT kmart/walmart/target unless you want her to take biking)

A 12" is usually the smallest size then 16" 20" and 24". It all depends on how tall she is. You have to have her sit on a bike to see if it fits her right. Not all bikes are the same size even if they are listed as the same size. Different maufactuers do things differently. She is probably somewhere around a 16" size now thought. That said, remember she will outgrow it really soon. If she can sit on a 20" comfortably (even with the seat down pretty low) then that would be a bike she could grow in to.

? for all bike enthusiast!?

Morphed_In

I used to have a (adult) bike as a kid that I absolutely loved... it was quite old (my parents bought it at a rummage sale in the 70s for my older siblings), but sadly it came to an end one winter when the snow blower ran over it :( I couldn't find anything like it until now.

I found a picture of the "Trek Lime" http://www.bicycling.com/article/1,6610,s1-1-324-16389-1,00.html

It has the handle bars I want, the wider seat I want, and the braking mechanism (pedal backwards) I want. I have never had a bike that shifted gears, and I don't know if that is important or not. It doesn't have the price tag that I want though. Are there any bikes out there that are similar but not as costly?

Thanks!

Answer
If you really want a bike like this ( ah yes, the 26" x 1-3/8 tire. So many flats, so many innertubes. ) Look out for garage sales and thrift shops. You might be able to find a good old Schwinn, Ross, or Raleigh for 20 bucks. These new bikes are simply $500 + versions of the same thing we bought to $50. I've found a few in the trash and reconditioned them. Too bad I didn't have room in my apartment for five different bikes.

Is $175 a good deal for a 1996 trek 930 Singletrack?

Q.V.

I'm interested in a getting a starter mountain bike. I found this on craiglist:
Trek 930 Singletrack 16 1/2 inch frame. Includes new saddle, new urban tires, fenders, rear rack, and two water bottle cages. $175.

Is a $175 too much for a 14 year old bike?

Answer
It depends on how much it fits what you were looking for

-looking for a Steel framed mountain bike
-Fits you perfectly (take to bike shop)
-components shift perfectly and frame in great shape

Any of those missing it isn't worth $50 to you but otherwise I personnaly would jump on it.

I have the guys version of this bike as it was my first bike that fit me that got me into cycling. I still use the bike for mountain bike and pulling my kids in a bike trailer and I love it. Got it a few years ago in Atlanta for $150 (had chipped paint and dent in frame). Put a lot of miles on it and love it. It it comes with the stock seat throw it in the trash as it is like sitting on a brick.

which bmx bike brand is better?

Shane M

which bmx brand is better

haro
redline
mongoose
powerlite

Answer
all the brands which u have listed are really low quality bmx brands. these are the type of brands in which parents go out looking to buy bikes for their kids, with average quality at a minimal price. if u really r interested in buying a bmx please look into buying a bike with a more reliable brand
try not to rush into a bike, and while u save more money, seriously take the time to look around and find the best deal, because u dont want to regret a buy later on. dont be afraid to spend the money, as down the track u will eventual upgrade and change parts.

what kind of mountain bike should i buy for my 13 year old son?

Justin T.

what should i buy a $200 diamond bike or a $125 mongoose
he is real experinced

Answer
I agree with the first poster, if your son is experienced neither a diamondback nor a mongoose will do (those are department store brands, and designed mostly for young kids that never take their mountain bikes off the pavement).

There are inexpensive mountain bikes made by companies with great reputations; Giant, Raleigh, Cannondale, and Specialized all come to mind. My advice would be to do some research (for example, you should find out how you son plans on using his bike, bc different bikes are suited better to different types of trails), and to talk to your local bike shop, they should be willing to answer any questions you may have without pressuring you into a sale. Also, buy used, you are guaranteed to get a better deal, and a used specialized beats 5 brand new mongooses hands down!

Traveling to canada by foot.?

Willow

I dislike where Im currently living, and who I'm living with. I've been wanting to travel the world for quite a while now, with my first stop being Canada. Honestly, I'd like to live there permanently, then once having a job long enough, I'd like to continue with traveling. I don't have a lot of money and am currently unemployed. I'd actually like to try to get to Canada by foot or by bicycle. Im currently residing in New York at the moment. I'm aware of two online networks known as couchsurfing and wwoof. I want to know if anyone used these networks before, how long it would take to get to Canada from New York by foot or bike, if the trip is even possible, and any possible tips to keep me safe and keep me going until I get there. Anyone who has ever traveled by foot before, your help would be greatly appreciated. Im only looking for help, so if your going to insult me and/or call me names please just keep you comments to yourselves.

Answer
It is about 410 miles from New York city to the closest Canadian border point (Niagara Falls) by road.

As an American citizens, you need a valid US passport to visit Canada. That only allows you to stay for 90 days and does not permit you to work in the country. If you want to visit for more than 90 days, you need to apply for a visitors visa at the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate. In addition, Immigration Canada may ask questions like where you are staying, proof you have sufficient funds to remain in the country, proof of medical insurance, etc. if they suspect you don't have money. The fact you are riding a bicycle -- rather than a car, bus, train, or plane will probably trigger the questions.

If you want to temporarily work in Canada, you must first receive an offer of employment from a Canadian company in a specific field and then apply for a work visa. You need to submit financial statements, proof of medical insurance, etc.

In order to stay in Canada permanently you need to apply as an immigrant. If you have direct relatives in Canada (parent, children, spouse, etc.) they can apply under the family section. Otherwise, you need to apply as a skilled worker (with a degree, job experience, etc.), an investor (willing to start a business in Canada worth $300k or more), or as provincial nominee (a teacher willing to work in the north, a famous artist, etc.). You need to submit your passport number, medical records, background checks, financial statements, English or French proficiency tests, etc. You compete on a point based system including work experience, age, knowledge of Canada, if you've visited or lived in the country previously, if you have friends, etc. Of the 2 to 3 million applications each year, approximately 20,000 people are allowed in. The process can take up to six years.

is it legal to have kid seating at bike back in california?

jian l

if yes, what is the hardware requirement? and what is
the safety tips to carry a kid in bicycling?

Answer
A kid seat on the back of your bicycle is legal in California and a helmet is required. However, I strongly recommend against those seats. They make your bike top heavy and if you fall, your child falls with you. Your best bet is to buy a trailer to attach to your bike. They have roll cages and if your bike falls over, the trailer hitch has a pivot attachment which keeps the trailer upright. Also, if the trailer does happen to fall over, the roll cage (and helmet) will protect the child. Yes, trailers cost quite a bit more but ask yourself: Are you willing to sacrifice your child's life to save money?

are bicycle inner tubes stretchable?

Josh

im building a catapult and trying to figure out what will stretchh i look for surgical tubing can not find at local stores. please help

Answer
Inner tube rubber is pretty strechy and so should work. Some sources peg elongation at 480% at breaking point. When I was a kid, I purchased a slingshot in Mexico that used long strips from innertubes. The strips lasted for awhile, then would start to get a lateral tear that fairly quickly snapped the band. Modern slingshots seem to use surgical tubing.

For stretchy surgical tubing, the generic names are "latex tubing" and "natural rubber tubing". Tygon probably had the best-known product, with technical information identified here:
http://www.tygon.com/natural-rubber-tubing.aspx

If you search using either of the above two generic names, there are several on-line sources. Here are some examples:
http://secure.sciencecompany.com/Amber-Latex-Tubing-18x116-5-ft-P6307C661.aspx
http://www.amazon.com/Flexible-Latex-Tubing-Thickness-Length/dp/B000FMWMA4
http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=latex+tubing

As far as local stores go, the tubing probably isn't carried except by say a medical, health, or chemical supply house.

Depending upon size needed, perhaps a sling-shot band would work:

Answer
There are two different types. One is called a Tag A Long that is made to attach to the seat post of an adult bike and the other is a boom type device that lifts the front wheel of the childs bike off the ground. The tag a long is a much better design.

Need suggestions in buying a new bicycle?

Steve

I'm looking to buy a bike so I could ride along with my kids (4 and 7 years old). I'm thinking that a mountain bike would be better than a road bike, due to its versatility. However, I have very limited knowledge in brands, features, wheel sizes, suspensions, etc... I don't want to spend more than $600 on a new bike. Can you offer some suggestions to assist/guide me in shopping for a new bike?

Answer
Start by reading "How to Choose a Bicycle" on this link - http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bicycle.html

I seriously doubt you NEED a mountain bike. Don't buy what you want - buy what you NEED. If you'll be riding on streets & light off road (groomed) trails you don't NEED suspension at all. A comfort and/or hybrid bike would work just as well & be easier to ride. Suspension parts soak up or 'zap' your energy. With every stroke of the pedals part of your energy is lost or soaked up into those suspension parts. Knobby off-road tires slow you down.

Features? Double wall rims and an 8 speed "cassette" rear cog - not a 7 speed "freewheel". The hub (axle) on the cassette is MUCH stronger. Too many good brands to recommend just one or two. See your local bike shop. Tell the salesperson "where & how" you plan on riding. What you NEED the bicycle to do for you.

Extensively test ride a few. The one that rides & just plain feels the best - buy it!

I am a kid and i am to young to go to a gym what do i do?

Welcome to

i am 14 and i am to young to go to a gym and we dont have a workout equipment at my house....is there anything i can do at my house without all that stuff? my goal is a six pack and stronger bi and triceps

thank you guys :)

Answer
how tall are you? some people say if you lift weights to early it'll stunt your height or something idk if this is true or not but if your happy with your height then go for the gym. their are some... not much you can do at your house.

1. cardio to lose weight. Examples would be Bicycle riding, swimming, running, jogging.
2. sports are good things to lose weight.
3. tricep extensions- can use like a can of tomatoe sauce or something a heavy one. or a bag of flour. <- like i said theirs not much to do without equipment so your better off going to the gym
4. Curls <- same as #3.

Reasons.
1. You need cardio to lose weight if you want your muscles to be bulging especially your abs. if your like me and are fat or got a tummy then you wont see your abs. i can feel my abs but i cannt see them -.-"

PS. i forgot to say for excersizes that you can do at home another can be like pushups, sit ups, bicycle kicks, crunches. You can get a pull up bar for like $20-30 hook it on your door frame and it's good to go. my friend and i have one but mine is unopened. his can hold up to 200+ pounds.

I need a good work-out routine..?

Desiirae

I need a good work out routine.. the only type of weight I have are 5, 10, 15, and 20 lbs dumbbells and a 20lb baby. ;) haha. I had a baby 8 months ago and now I have the time to work-out, so I wanna get back in shape. I would like to focus on my stomach mainly, but also would like to work on my thighs and biceps. I need a good workout plan using the things I have. Help me out pleeeease. Thanks for all the help!

Answer
Are you borrowing some guyâs weights? 20lbs! :-O

I might use 20lbs if Iâm in very good shape, after exercising for a couple of months, doing leg extensions (the quads are the biggest muscles). Otherwise I donât go over 10 pounds, like when using a weight belt while doing squats. I wonât go over 8lbs for my dumbbells curls because I care about my elbow joints and by the time I can handle 8lbs, I feel that I reached my top shape (with that sexy curve on the arm instead of my arms looking like a stick) and just need to maintain my muscle mass from then on. After about 3 months of doing weight training, doing calisthenics and using small weights, you will go from out of shape to a great shape, tripling or quadrupling your strength (depending on which muscle youâre talking about). You will gain about one pound of muscle mass a month that will make you look thinner and toner (but heavier on a scaleâ¦who cares about weight, right?). Also that one pound of muscle mass will need 30/50 calories a day to maintain so it will devour 3 to 5 pounds of fat reserves a yearâ¦nice! (each pound of fat reserves is 3,500 calories).

My goal of small weights are 11.5lbs for the back strengthener, 10lbs for the door squats, 5lbs for the lateral raises, 20lbs for the leg extension, 5lbs for the triceps extensions, 8lbs for the dumbbells curls, 6.5lbs for the side leg lifts, 18lbs for the heel raises, 8lbs for the upright row, 6.5lbs for the butt/hip extension, 5lbs for the arm kickbacks and the back leg lift. For calisthenics (using your own body as weight), just do as much reps as you can (pushups, lunges, any kind of crunches, seated rowsâ¦). Now, those are MY goals, not yours. Everybody is different. Your routine should reflect your physical abilities and nobody else. As a rule of thumb, if you cannot do 8 reps, the weight is too heavy and if you can do more than 12/15 reps, the weight is too light, so you should add more weight and go down to 8 reps unless your weight increment is too heavy (then youâd need endless, time consuming reps before you can go down in reps and add weights)

You need to buy some ankle/wrist weights (1.5lbs, 2.5lbs) and a pair of 2.5 dumbbells and maybe an extra 8lbs pair of dumbbells because women cannot progress at 5 pounds increments like guys. Even guys have a hard time when using gym weight machines and having to go over a 5 pounds incrementâ¦they have to grunt like cavemen and do 30 reps before they can add 5 pounds and go down to 8 reps.

If you cannot buy 1.5lbs, 2.5lbs or 8lbs weights, you can use whatever is in your house that is the same weight (itâs not as practical, but itâs as effective). You can fill Ziploc bags with dirt or use water bottles or backpacks filled with books. I used to do my 8lbs dumbbells curls with an 8lbs unabridged encyclopedia until I bought an 8lbs pair of dumbbells.

Nowâ¦about using your babyâ¦haha. Without kidding, kids are great when exercising (they love stretching). Except that you cannot have a treadmill or a stationary bike in your house if you have kidsâ¦too many moving parts that could hurt them.
Kids love to fly like Superman. For a great abs exercise, lie on your back, with your knee next to your chest, put your kidâs chest on the bottom of your feet, hold his/her hands and when you extend your legs up, your kid is going up like Superman, then you swing your legs back and forth and 20 years later, theyâre still reminding you how great that felt.

Do not focus on your stomach (Iâm guessing that you mean your belly and/or abs?), your thighs or biceps. Take advantage of all your muscles so you can build up more muscle mass and rev up your metabolism. Your workout plan should be about what you like. You have numerous exercises that you can pick and choose. Try them out and drop the ones you donât like.

I do regular and reverse crunches but not obliquesâ¦I just donât like obliques or even bicycle crunches.

Donât forget to also eat healthy and do aerobics (at least 3 different aerobic activities to challenge your body in different ways).

Darion Joh

I have ALWAYS wanted to be a professional Motocross / Supercross racer ever since I was 3 years old. I would start riding my bike as if I was a racer. For Christmas I got a Dirtbike when I was 8 years old, Best feeling EVER. I never touched my Bmx bike or my Skateboard. I was defiantly going to go far in the sport. I was getting around to jumps and speeds. Then after only a good 3-4 weeks of me riding, My dad got on my dirtbike and rode it to the air-pump on a flat tire and completely shredded the inner-tube on the back tire. Now its been seven years and I can't take this. Its PISSING ME THE HECK OFF. I have 2 A's a B and failing algebra, that I am bringing up. He completely ignores any good grades I bring home, and finds something to flip on me about. For years he has blamed the dirtbike on me, and said "You have no one to be disappointed in but yourself." Which to me sounds Idiotic considering he broke it, and just left my most prized possession sitting there for 7 years. We watch Supercross EVERY week, EVERY time it comes on, then when I mention my dirtbike, he gets all defensive, trying to make it seem like its my fault that its broken. Even though I watched him SHRED the back inner-tube apart. He keeps telling me to get straight A's and I got really close but I have to bring up my math grade, Even when I was home schooled last year and did outstanding, he never even mentioned fixing or replacing my dirtbike. School is not the same as it was for him in the late 70s.. I wish he would understand. Iv'e been offered weed, dip, shrooms, and a blunt, which makes me really uncomfortable at my school. Many are use to firing guns at my school since the majority hunts bucks and other animals. It's cool when you home but not to bring bullets and shells to school. He just doesn't understand. I'm starting to feel depressed, over this bull crap. I CAN NOT see my self doing anything else than racing Supercross and Motocross. That's what I'm made for. I started to get into Bmx and Skateboarding, and got really good at both, to try and take my mind of of my dirtbike. Just as I started to get in contact with sponsors, my dad shuts it down, and said I can't talk to any sponsors at all. I get ABSOLUTELY NO support from him other than him getting me a Bmx bike only after I got made fun of for bringing my old one to a Skatepark. If it really takes his only son to be made fun of, for him to get me a new bmx bike, he could care less about my future career. I just can't see me as a professional racer with him apart of the picture. He is like a road block that follows me. Just waiting to shut me down at a moments notice. I'm 15 years old going on 16, I NEED to start riding before I'm 18, just to start earlier within that age range, or else it will be almost impossible to get my body used to the workouts, the training and straight up going fast. It's like I'm slowly going into a meltdown, that's hard for my parents to see. Any advise? Please help, I feel stuck.. What I say, What I know is, There's no point in me living if I can't race....

You are mentally screwing yourself. You have a lot of negatives going on and it is bringing you down mentally. Don't think in the negative. Change your mind to improvise, adapt and overcome. Instead of looking at what isn't going right, look at what you can do to make it go right.

Talk to the kids in class that get the math that you are not getting. Have them sit down with you and explain it. Sometimes it takes someone else to explain something to you, so you will understand it. Example: Someone can explain to you how to throw a free throw. Cup the ball with your support hand, bend at the knees, keep the ball straight and push the ball with your shooting hand. You don't make it. Then another coach comes up and tells you basically the same thing, but that you need to keep the ball lined up with your chin (straight). Now you make the shot. Same lesson, different teacher.

When you talk about school, you need to read the book: The deliberate dumbing down of America. Here is a free PDF of the book: http://deliberatedumbingdown.com/
This is the reason you are doing bad in Algebra. Public school is now meant to confuse. It is teaching theory instead of the basics. Rout learning has been removed. They don't teach kids to be euntrapanuers, they teach them to be assembly workers. It is indoctrination. You spew back what the teacher wants - whether it is right or wrong - just spew back what they want to hear. Math is now a joke. Imaginary numbers, no more long division, etc. it is all concepts, theories, exploration and explanation....ok, back to racing.

If you lived near me, I would get your bike up and running for free and teach you how to maintain it - I live near Chicago, IL.

First things first. The bike is not running. Get some money together to fix it yourself. You cannot afford shop time (over $100 an hour), you need to learn to maintain and fix your bike yourself.

You need to save up some money, from odd jobs, birthdays, Christmas, etc. Use that money to buy parts and a shop manual for your bike. Watch YouTube videos on how to fix what needs to be fixed. After you fix the rear tire (you can find used ones on Ebay, Craigslist, flea markets and yard sales). You will need to drain the gas tank, clean the carb, clean the fuel petcock and put in a new spark plug.

Maybe your dad doesn't have mechanical skills and doesn't want you to find out. Maybe he is embarrassed. Stop asking him for help and do it yourself. It is obvious you are not going to get the support you think you need from home. You are going to have to take your own initiative and get what you want for yourself. This is actually a valuable lesson. No one and I mean no one, on this earth is ever going to hand you what you want. You have to go and get what you want yourself.

After you get the manual, get the parts and get stuff up and running again, you should tell your dad "thank you" for teaching me how to be independent and self sufficient. Then show him what you did, what you learned and how you did what you did. Dad's love their children and to even suggest that he taught you something, by not teaching you, will make him happy.

Generic Trigger SM Owners (or people familiar): A few questions please?

geoffrey.m

So I've just got my Generic Trigger SM50 yesterday and, like a little kid at Christmas, am very exited. My CBT is on monday so hopefully I can get that over and done with and jump on my bike.

However, I have a few questions.
1. Where did you put your front L plate? I've got my back one on okay attached to the rear number plate, but just don't know where to put the front one. I'M NOT TOO KEEN ON TRIMMING IT but I guess I might just have to if need be.
2. Did you manage to get a proper owners manual with your bike? As we never got a manual with ours (since the only one available was poorly translated. We did download it just now however and we agree)

I have a few more but my Dad insists he knows them so I'll leave them to another day :)
thanks for any questions in advance.

Answer
if all else fails you should call or ask your state DMV about your states' laws regarding license plate placement
