We just bought a basic exercise bike because we are planning a biking vacation next August. The weather is too cold and snowy to do real biking in the winter (I'm in Alaska). How long should I let them use it each day? They are 7 and 10 years old.

Answer
Unless they use it to the point of feeling sick, if they are otherwise healthy there's no reason to make them stop.

My brother has autism and wants to ride a bike?

Isis

My little brother, who is 10 years old, is autistic and is having trouble learning how to ride a bike. I keep suggesting to my mom that we wait until he's older to teach him, when he understands more. My brother wants to learn, but he won't keep his feet placed on the pedals. And he keeps his head down as he's trying to ride. We've tried the scooter method, which didn't go to well. We've also tried letting go of him, but all he does is stop or fall. Is their any place we can take him, so someone else can train him?

Answer
There is a program for children with special needs called "lose the training wheels" which use special bikes and people who are trained for working with kids with special needs. They boast an 80% success and I've heard only positive things about them helping kids with special needs - especially those who have balance issues such as those on the spectrum.

If none of the locations are near you, you may want to contact them anyway to see if there's any plans of adding more locations or if they know of any other similar programs.

What are some activities you do when babysitting?

kids bike accessories image

Zoey

I babysit alot the activities can be for any age of children. I'm just looking for a really long list of activities that are kind of time consuming and a lot of fun, for both me and the kids thanks!

Answer
-Make play dough! http://www.busybeekidscrafts.com/Salt-Dough-Recipe.html
You can even take a small food storage container (of yours) to have the kids decorate with stickers, etc. that will hold their play dough it.

-Decorate a pillow case/T-shirt/etc..
Bring your accessory that you are going to color on. Take some permanent markers for them to use, but make sure they don't write on anything else- include themselves.

-Go outside!
Play with chalk.
Blow bubbles. (you can even make them)
Take a walk/bike ride
Visit a park
Have a picnic
Bring some water guns
Do a scavenger hunt: Have them find a pink flower, a blue car, etc.

-Have a dance party!
Put some songs like: The Macerana, the twist, chicken dance, hokey pokey, electric slide, etc. on a CD or a playlist on your ipod. Turn off the lights, expect for some dimmed ones or a lamp. Try to get a diso ball. (glow sticks if the kids are above the age of 7) Freeze dance for the little ones!

-Play games!
Hide and seek
Twister
Go fish
Slap Jack
Candy Land
Bowling (use soup cans as pins, and a ball)

-For girls: Do a pedicure!
Take a large bowl, if you have one and put a towel under it. Fill it up with warm water and bubbles/soap. Let her sit on the coach with her feet in the bowl. Massage her feet, then paint her toes.

-Frost cookies!
Make the cookies at your house and take them with to avoid using their stove! Bring along some frosting and sprinkles. Have them decorate their own. Rice krispies also work but are quite messy!

-ColoIring
You can take big poster boards and stamps, stickers, markers... Or you can print off coloring sheets, and have them make their own coloring book. Drawing contests for older kids are always fun!

-Build a "tent!"
Very fun in my opinion. Put chairs in a circle, and lay a big blanket on top! Crawl in and enjoy.
I love going "camping" with this idea. Set up the tent, roast marshmallows in the microwave, do a scavenger hunt, etc.

- Balloon games..
This is only good for kids older than about 5... The little ones can choke on broken balloon pieces. Play "keep it in the air" or do the game with the balloon tied to your ankle. Make sure to clean up!

-Limbo...

-Movie "theater"
Bring 4-5 movies for them to pick from, make tickets, have a concession stand.
A fun idea with this topic is if you can bring some large cardboard boxes to make fake cars out of and have a pretend drive in movie.

Just be creative!!

What kind of bicycle for an adult who wants to learn?

mpp1229

Rode a little as a kid, but not for over 15 years. I am small, 5'2" and nervous with no balance! Read something about a lower style bike where both feet can be flat on the ground- this sounds good! Going to be riding mostly on a bike path, recreationally only. Don't want to spend a fortune. What should I look for and where? Thanks!

Answer
Look for a good bike shop. The can fit a bike to you, tune it and make all the adjustments, install any accessories that you might need and later on make repairs as neccessary.
For a large selection of reasonably priced bicycles of all types, check out the Giant website here...

How do we as Adults handle kids that are bulling our children outside of school?

kids kick bike image

purplefrog

We've already switched schools, unfortunately the bullying is continuing after school. It is to the point where we are unable to let are children go to the park and ride bikes and have fun with the other children in our area.
Aside from teaching them to kick these kid's butts (which I'd love to do, but know it won't help) or even better, sending my husband over to their house to kick THIER dad's butt, what do we do?
I've had one encounter with the "mother" and well, needless to say I know exactly why her children are they way they are. She's a complete MONSTER.
Any ideas?

Answer
You say the mother's a monster, so the kids are the same. Maybe the kids need another role model. You are going to hate this, but I say try to make friends with the bully kids. Invite them--the kids only, not the awful mother--over for cookies or hot dogs and talk to them in a friendly, non-threatening way. Always be polite and wave or speak nicely to them when you see them in the neighborhood. If the bullies like and respect you, they'll leave your kids alone.

What can I do about a guy who rides around with a radio taped to his bike?

babieyoux3

Seriously. There's a guy that rides around in my neighborhood with a radio taped to his bike, blasting Spanish music. I REALLY can't take it anymore. I feel like it would be stupid to call the cops saying "Hey, there's a guy with a radio taped to his bike, it's disturbing the peace." However, I don't know what else to do! Help!

Answer
pay some kid to "accidentally" kick the guy off the bike and destroy his radio....

i'm tryin to find a bike for my 5 year old that wants to start racing, but i'm not what size to get. he's average height for his age. if you could help me out with the size it would be great. i was looking at a 16in, but i don't want him to out grow it too fast. if you could also provide some sites to look at them on it would be great. thanks.

Answer
you probably want to get him a micro (18'' wheels) or a mini (20'' but built fo smaller kids)

I just want my 8 year old son to try BMX racing. Can we just use a bmx bike from walmart?

pickle

What do you look for when buying a BMX raceing bike?

Answer
I would NOT recommend buying a bike for racing purposes form a Department store, especailly for an 8 year old.. Even at a bike shop, there are less expensive versions of racing bikes - Diamond Back and Redline both make them. In Redline, you are looking at the "Proline" rather then the "Flight."

The problem with department store bikes is that they are "fits all" bikes that will not fit an 8 year old very well for racing.

What you are looking at for an 8 year old would be a mini or maybe junior racing bike. Micro-Mini is too small in most cases. A mini will have 1 1/8 tires front and rear. If you want to buy new, find a shop with one on the floor - with the downturn in the economy, they are likely to deal on the price to move product.

Also, since kids outgrow thier racing bikes at that age, there tends to be a lot of good deals on used BMX "mini" sized bikes. There is almost always one for sale at the race track. Other good sources woudl be eBay and Craig's List.

Plus, if the kid doesn't like racing, or gets serious and wants a new bike, a used racing bike has some resale value, whereas a used walmart bike has limited resale value.

How old was your kiddo when they wanted their training wheels off their bike?

My nephew was begging my sister to take the training wheels off his bike yesterday, and he's almost 5. (2 more months) The neighbor took em off today, and he's out there with my mom riding his "big boy bike"
I remember I was 4 when I got into my dads tool box and tried taking my training wheels off by myself. How about your kids? When did they ask for their training wheels to come off their bike?

Answer
He was 3 when he wanted them off. We tried and it didn't work out well. Earlier this spring(when he was 4 and a half), we took the training wheels off and it was a success.

How old was your child when they learned to ride a bike?

a mom

My daughter is 5 1/2. She wants to remove her training wheels. We've tried it, but she just does not have the concept of balance yet. I feel bad for her. I will keep working with her, but what is the typical age a child learns to ride a bike without training wheels?

Answer
Well, I learned to ride with training wheels when I was 5 and I learned to ride without them at age 8. All kids be able to learn at different ages, so I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. I'm sure she'll be ready to ride without training wheels in a few years. I had the exact same problem as your daughter- my dad tried to teach me earlier but I just couldn't do it yet. We waited another year or so and I ended up learning just fine! Good luck to your daughter!

3. Hannah Elizabeth and Hailey Elyse
4. Danielle Marie and Jonathan David (David really can't be feminized so I chose Danielle because it was close.)
5. Gavino Carlo
6. Cassidy Rose (Cassie), Amelia Daisy (Millie), Kasey Violet (Kasey), Emma Lilly (Emma), Kaitlyn Aileen (Kaitlyn), Hannah Elizabeth (Hannah), Hailey Elyse (Hailey), Danielle Marie (Danielle), Johnathan David (John-David), and Gavino Carlo (Gavin)

Cassie, Millie, Kasey, and Emma at 15:

Cassie is the oldest of the quads and shows it. She acts like the leader when it comes down to pretty much anything. She is really into her school work and want to become a radiologist when she finishes school.

Millie is the the second born of the quads. She talks a lot and loves to paint. She hopes to open an art studio with Emma one day. Millie also loves to read and shop. She is the one everyone else goes to when they need help finding clothes.

Kasey is the third born and the most laid back of the quads. She has a steady boyfriend named Jacob and is always with him. She is a little shy, but gets to talking when a conversation gets started. She wants to be an elementary teacher when she finishes school.

Emma is the youngest of the quads. She loves horses and also loves to paint. She hopes to open an art studio with Millie one day. She also likes to cook and experiment in the kitchen. She is usually the one to cook when I am not home.

Kaitlyn at 11:

Kaitlyn has always kept to herself. She has a few good friends and likes to have sleepovers. She loves to ride horses. She has her own horse named Izzy. She also likes to play school with her younger brothers and sisters.

Hannah and Hailey at 9:

Hannah is the older twin but often lets Hailey take charge. Hannah loves to dance and has been for seven years. She also likes to ride her bike and hula hoop. Yet, she might complain a bit if she gets a little dirty.

Hailey is the younger twin but sometimes acts as the boss over her sister, Hannah. Hailey likes to play softball and soccer and pretty much does nothing else. She plays soccer a lot with her brother, John-David, and likes showing him new tricks.

Danielle and John-David at 5:

Danielle has her own personality. She loves animals. She has a dog named Scooter, a bunny named Velvet, and a fish named Dakota. She always talks about her pets to everyone she meets. She also likes to take pictures. Can you guess what she takes pictures of?

John-David loves sports. He is in a karate class and plays soccer with his sister, Hailey. He also wants to play football when he gets older. He also likes to skateboard and rollerblade down the road. He is very smart and at the top of his class.

Gavin at 3:

Gavin is the baby of family and loves it that way. He is so spoiled to everyone. He likes to cuddle and he is always loveable. He is the only one not in school yet and loves his time by himself. He likes to play games and sing songs in the car.

Piece of Meat or Romantic?

Leona N

I feel as if I'm letting my fiance down. I'm a pretty low maintenance person and I don't understand someone who complains constantly. But my fiance finds something "wrong" with me all the time. I don't cook enough, clean enough, have sex with him enough, dress-up for him enough. And when he is telling me about the things I'm not doing, he doesn't do it in the nicest way. It's usually something below the belt and hurtful. Granted he may have a point on the sex thing, but we both work full time and are planning a wedding and I have a large and needy family, but that's life right?
And it makes me feel weird about things when every time I'm changing my clothes, get out of the shower, doing anything remotely related to being naked, he is making comments, and grabbing at me. I don't know if this is all that weird for a man, but it makes me feel bad. And trying to tell him this makes him angry. He'll start acting like this is only way to express his ahem... interest is to act in this way. Accusing me of never initiating, which isn't false. But he makes me feel like a piece of meat when he acts this way. And when we do have sex, it's not EVER anything romantic. It's always a wham-bam-thank-ya ma'am, he feels great, I pretend I do. How am I supposed to want to have sex with someone w

Will aluminum frames hold him? What about spokes, tires, etc? Can we just buy a standard mountain bike? Would that work?

Answer
there are 3 frames of bikes. the standard mountain bike frame, the road bike frame and the liedown frame. The bikes are pretty sturdy in that I have fallen down half of a mountain before as my bike hit a tree and a rock and a nest of hornets and a small Puppy (just kidding about the puppy). Most of these mountai biking companies like Trek, Gary Fisher, Specialized and Kona are tested to have alot of impacts. The frames are welded professionally as well as tested professionally before they are shipped.
I would recomend deflating the tires 5-10 psi to compinsate for the weight...Be careful tho if you are planning to take this offroad inflate the tire to normal psi. Alluminum tires and spokes should work just fine since all the weight is displaced between the frame and the fork (what holds the tires on) of the bike.
I would recommend buying a name brand bike like the abouve mentioned and only because a bike from walmart will not hold up...i.e you get what you pay for.

Does anyone know where I can find a jeep brand kids bike I think its called x12? I cant find one online?

It's white and orange and it is a 12 in bicycle. I have looked online but I can't find one. I want to get one for my 3 year old I first saw it in our walmart but they only had one and when I went back to get it it was gone.

I just bought a bike for my 12 and 13 year old. I have one bike I'm going to sell, but I don't know how much to charge them. Also I just bought a new camera and now running low on some cash. I need to buy a new set of golf clubs for my 12 year old too.

Answer
It would depend a lot on how much you spent. If it was an inexpensive bike, possibly bought at a department store, you might be better off donating it to good will or to the Yellow Bike Project and taking it off on your income tax. A bike that old will not bring much in return. If it was more of a high-end bike, you may get something for it, but again things have changed so much in that time, probably not very much.

If it is a high-end bike, you might go by a local bike shop and ask them.

If you really want a price, I would guess you could not get ore than $10 or $15. You might get a bit more if it is in good condition.

At what age can kids start riding dirt bikes?

Momof3kidd

I have a 7 year old and a 4 year old boy who are interested in dirt biking. What age would it be appropriate for them to start? I think they are a little young, my husband disagrees. What age did your kids start?

Answer
I think thats great that they want to start, there really is no age limit, you just have to go to a local dirt bike retailer and check some bikes out because they come in a bunch of sizes, i've been riding since i was 2 so i know what I'm talking about, its just takes practice. just make sure you teacher your kids and they should be fine.

Answer
He is not ready!!
Iâd love to reclaim that feeling of freedom that I experienced the summer I turned ten and got my first bicycle. Its simple operating system included pedals that I pushed forward to start and slowly back-pedaled on to stop. I found it exhilarating to ride my bike out my driveway, onto the gravel road, and around the corner at the end of the block. I could be out of sight almost as soon as the echo of the âgoodbyeâ to my mom disappeared into thin air.

Lightest durable frame BMX?

Matt

What is the Lightest, yet durable for dirt jumps AND skateparks
pics and name

Answer
Hm. Perhaps you should have clicked on "Discover" rather than "Ask". Anyway, I'll try to educate you so you can be the smartest kid on the block...

Stunt BMX bikes are never designed with light weight in mind. You NEED the weight to build up inertia to keep moving when you can't pedal or when you are flying through the air. On top of that, it is REALLY tough to design a lightweight BMX frame that will take the punishment...I know, I design them for a living.

Even considering chrome molybdneum (cromo) as a frame material, designers tend to use the greater strength of the material (hiten and cromo weigh the same) instead of thinning everything down and saving weight.

Regarding dirt jump versus park bikes, these also tend to be different in design because each has their own needs, such as sealed mechanisms on the dirt bike and (sometimes) longer chainstays on the park bike... stuff like that. That doesn't mean you can't use a dirt bike for street, but you should NOT use a park bike for the dirt.

So, forget the weight factor, decide on the 3 best dirt jump bikes you can afford, and pick your favorite. Don't leave out brands such as Diamondback or Mongoose when looking but DO ignore bikes from department stores- they aren't the same as bike shop bikes.

If you need help finding these types of bikes, call you local bike shops or search for BMX bicycle on your favorite search engine.

What are the reasons why people ride bicycles?

Answer
1. Riding a bike is liberating in that I-still-feel-like-a-kid sort of way, and I'm not trapped in a metal/glass/infernal combustion coffin looking at the world through wide-screen television eyes. And parking is always free on a bike. And my bike starts every morning, even in cold weather.

âHurl Everstone of Minneapolis is the publisher of Cars R Coffins, a Web site devoted to bicycle-punkrock-action.

2. Without cycling, Iâd die consuming the quantities of beer that I do. I also ride for the scenery. And what other opportunity do I have for stuffing 250 pounds into too-small Lycra bib shorts?

âMatt Wiebe, a Santa Fe resident, University of New Mexico professor and technical editor of Bicycle Retailer and Industry News

3. I ride because it gives me an excuse for shaving my legs. If it werenât for the six bikes in the garage, Iâd be forever trying to explain why I look like a bearded lady on the lam from a carnival sideshow who got her head shaved in the drunk tank after flunking a cootie inspection. Plus when I'm stuck for something obnoxious to write or draw, a quick ride helps jar the nickel loose and set the music to playing. That, and the drugs.

âPatrick O'Grady, a professional rumormonger living in Colorado who vents periodically on this site and at www.maddogmedia.com.

4. While pedaling over hill and dale, people usually notice and often talk to me. Because of this I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly. Like a Southern Baptist song, the good has overcome. This has been the best reason of all for bicycling. I'm approachable when on a bike. It's fun talking to kids and strangers about a sport and way of life that I love. Humanity awakens at the sight of a two-wheeled traveler.

âLoretta Esparza is a seven-year veteran of Salsa Cycles and a dog-lovin' barista in California.

5. To coalesce the burning pure horrific rage as you face knuckleheads, debutantes and four-wheeled freaks in traffic.

âBob Roll calls himself âa man barely alive.â A veteran of the 7-Eleven team, the first U.S. pro squad to tackle the Tour de France, he is the author of several books and a cycling commentator on the Outdoor Life Network.

6. Your ass. As in, if you ride a bike your butt ends up looking fairly tight â like two VW Beetles parking.

âJoe Lindsey of Boulder, Colorado, has been riding and racing bikes for 15 years, and covering the sport for the past six for cycling magazines. He's covered the Tour de France, the Olympics and numerous World Cups and world championships. He enjoys photography, telemark skiing and Britney Spears videos with the sound turned off.

7. Riding a bike has always been a major symbol of independence and freedom. But the real reasons I go out and pound the pedals are sex, drugs and rock 'n roll.
Sex: As the gap to geezerhood closes, stayinâ in shape for my favorite activity becomes even more important.
Drugs: A long time ago I realized that maintaining my awesome boy-toy bod while enjoying my modest beer habit was going to require a lot more exercise than it did in my studly youth.
Rock 'n roll: While my guitar skills have never surpassed the mediocre stage, the stuff I play in my head when I ride is awesome. Just give me the steady rhythm of my fixed gear, some open road and turn it to 11, Jimi, âcuz today weâre gonna rock!

âRoss Shafer lives with his wife, Mari, on the Rockinâ Bar L ranch in Petaluma, California. He is the founder and former owner of Salsa Cycles and owns and operates Six-Nine Design, which provides product design, prototyping, fabrication and tool design services.

8. Some people train so they can race; I race so I can train, so the all-important workout doesnât get shoved to the back burner so easily. Nothing inspires like knowing you're going to get your butt kicked in the next race if you donât train. The fact that I get my butt kicked anyway is completely beside the point.

âJef Mallett, a former bike racer and current triathlete and cartoonist. His strip, "Frazz," appears in 150 newspapers across America.

9. My wife, Natasha, thinks cycling is great way to spend time as a family while burning a few calories. For her, the family ride is quality time. Then again, she does not have the trailer with 50 or so stuffed animals and the 2-year-old singing âOld McDonaldâ attached to her bike as we climb what must be Mont Ventoux. Hmm ... now that I think about it, cycling is the best way to burn a bazillion calories and hang with the family.

âJohn Kibodeaux, a 16-year veteran of bicycle retail, owns High Desert Bicycles in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and also works full time for his daughter, Marguerite. He has a B.A. from St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and a Ph.D. in dirty diapers, Sesame Street and anything Disney.

10. I live and breathe bike transportation. Does that make me a granola-crunching, world-saving utopian? Actually, my riding has a lot to do with what's good for me. Riding makes me healthy. It saves me time.

What was the maximum speed did you reach while ??

Riding your Bicycle?? and did you get injured??

Answer
True Story: When I was 16 years old (so this was back when dinosaurs roamed the earth) I was riding my ten speed bike along highway 1 on the California coast, I was going on a long downhill stretch peddling as fast as I could in the largest gear (I used skinny racing tires and my bike weighed 20 pounds). A car got along side me and the driver yelled out the window "You're going 55 miles per hour" Sorry I don't know how many Kilometers per hour that is but I think it was fast.

At least that's what the ambulance drivers said when he scraped my off the street... kidding! but the first part was true. It's funny that you asked that because if that guy hadn't told me I would not have known the answer to this question. After that I took the training wheels off... kidding again! You don't need training wheels with a tricycle... kidding three times! I'm out!

What changes in your childs lifestyle did you do when they were diagnosed with ADHD?

children bikes for cheap image

YummyMummy

My child was diagnosed with ADHD however medication will be my VERY LAST option if it comes to that. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on diet change, activity change, therapy suggestions on ways for him to cope and to help him. I am feeling very lost right now, however I just want to help him so he can be happy in his life. Any suggestions would be great!

Answer
These are the things I did:
1. Change the diet. Get books by Dr. Doris Rapp online, used books. You will want to do the elimination diet or go to an environmental allergist. But, truthfully, you may just be able to find out what foods are causing problems with the diet. Main offenders are: sugars, dairy, wheat and peanut butter/peanut products is a big culprit. The body has to heal itself, and then the foods can be eaten in lesser quantities.
2. Be understanding. Don't expect your child to be the perfect child, but don't let him get away with everything, either.
3. Use a sense of humor. This can cover many faults in general, and is a very handy tool in dealing with ADHD kids. Laugh a little. When my son was having fun by burping at the dinner table, I finally joined in and he really didn't need to continue. We laughed and it did not become a fight. You may not be able to laugh at everything, but let your child learn to have a sense of humor.
4. Use things that stimulate the intellect. Find books, games, toys and places to go that help your son learn about his world. If he has a special interest, find lots of ways to help him learn about that.
5. Lots of activity, especially outdoors. Let him ride his bike, skate board, roller blade, run around, play baseball, walk the dog, etc. Our kids just loved their trampoline, our best investment.
6. Be encouraging. The best thing you can do is to be positive and encourage him. Show lots of love, encouraging words and praise. Don't just praise for the sake of praising, but genuine appreciation is always good. Help him to appreciate all of his good qualities, always, and find ways to mention them, often (to any of your kids).
7. Do things with him, including things on the list.
8. Help him with his homework. He may not want to study in the normal way. When my son was upside-down on the bed with his feet up against the wall, I let him do this while I helped him study. He got the job done and we did not fight about it. Encourage in the homework area.
9. If tempers flair, give him a time out in his room. Do not yell, do not demean, just take him to his room and let him calm down, always keeping your cool, despite what is happening. There might be a lot of noise in the meantime, and you just need to do something else until things settle down. Then, when you are sure he is more approachable, go in and talk to him, very calmly. Talk about what happened, that you love him, and what ways it could be handled differently, next time. Then let him come out if he is ready to try, again. Hugs.
10. Be willing to listen to him when he has things to talk about. There might be people at school that cause problems or criticize. They do this to everyone and everyone needs to learn how to let it go or how to react without escalating things. Help him to feel good about himself, despite the unkind people in this world.
I think the site called CHADD has links and tips.
Get the books above and see the Youtube from Dr. Doris Rapp. It is helpful and the books are especially helpful. Find as many of her books as you can. These were the best books that had lots of information, and very cheap online.

Why are so many young children being diagonosed with type 1 diabeties?

DAD OF DIA

I have noticed a large number of young children in our area being diagnosed with type 1. I wounder if their could be a tie to the inoculaton shots for school. If not the shots why are we seeing so many new cases?

Answer
We discussed this exact topic in workshop for Nursing.

Our diets have changed so much in the Western World.
30 years ago we were lucky if we had a couple of take away food shops in a town or city and then it was a treat to eat these meals. Most food was grown at home or brought from the supermarket for cheap eating.
We also had the time to cook a proper meal and then burn it off.
We were also more active. Kids could ride their bikes. Go to the park. Play on the streets till dark. We knew they were safe.
We also didn't have Play Sations. X-Box. DVD's etc. We had to ride to a shop to play a video game and then ride home again. We had no choice but to keep ourselves busy through activities that usually involved some sort or exercise and movement.
TV was even pretty boring. In my Home town we had 2 channels! So I prefered to go meet my friends and go climb trees and swim.
We DID HAVE THE SHOTS back then and have for many years before that. And kid's hardly ever had a Type 1 diagnosis. It was very rare indeed.

Now we have a McDonald's in every town and city. Fish and Chips. KFC. Take away Deli's. Even in the supermarket we can buy 'quickie' food.
Most of this food is laden with calories, fats and sugars.
Because we live such hectic lifestyles now grabbing a quick tea is so much simplier. So we buy more and more often.
Add that with that it's not as safe to let the kid's go out and play, they are going to not burn off the excess fat's and calories and gain weight.
Kids sit in front of the TV and video games and not move as much.
All of this has contributed to the massive increase World wide almost of new cases of Type 1.

EDIT Some people DO have a pancreas that just stops working causing IDDM (Type 1) BUT if that was the case with EVERYONE then we would have been diagnosing and testing our kids 30+ years ago. There is usually a reason for IDDM.

EDIT I am Type 1. I am extremely active and always have been. I am also very skinny. Too skinny. My diet is healthy although it wasn't always through late adolescence.

EDIT I LOVE thumbs down. I am trying to get a Yahoo record. Bring them on.

EDIT Becksstein If you are going to send a really nasty, irrational, aggressive e-mail you should expect a tactful but blunt one back. BUT then go on to questions and cry about it? You 'forgot' to mention you sent me one first that was less than polite. And all I did was answer a question about something I learnt in workshop. Yeah I would hate to see what you would do if I bad mouthed you on Yahoo?!
My Aunt was a NIDDM who is now IDDM through her lack of changes to diet and lifestyle.
If you don't believe me as you know it all, I will send you her medical history and you can debate it with her Doctor not me and the World.
Maybe you don't know EVERYTHING about diabetes? Maybe you should "look that up."

My friend bought a new house and this model of Schwinn bicycle (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Antique-Schwinn-Pixie-childs-bike-bicycle-original-16-blue-stingray-old-/300609992604?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45fdc0779c) was in it, but in an adult size. I'm wondering what the model is called and what years it was manufactured.

Answer
The first two looks like JT so it would be September 1982

Here is John's vintage bikes with link to schwinn date code pdf that you can download to your computer for future reference.
http://www.johnsvintagebikes.com/

If you need any other help then go to these two forums I go to The Classic and Antique Bicycle Exchange & Ratrod Bikes that also have for sale and wanted sections if you want to look for a bike some where else.
http://www.thecabe.com/vbulletin/content.php

http://www.ratrodbikes.com/

I guess your going to use it for parts like he his selling it for unless you can fix the weld on it but if you do not know how to then you want to look for a different one a ebay or Craigslist and the two links above.

What is a good bicycle for a beginning cyclist?

justwonder

Currently in my early 40's. I haven't spent much time riding a bike since I was a kid, though I have used the Lifecycle at the gym many times. Now I have moved to a place where there are a lot of outdoor trails and I want to get into outdoor cycling. But I don't want to spend a lot of money for a fancy bike right away, since I'm still a beginner.

What is a good entry-level bike that I should look for. What price range are we talking? 300? 500?

Thanks.
Forgot to add, I'll be looking at men's bikes.
;-)

Answer
Avoid buying a bike at a place like Wal-Mart. Often the bikes are put together incorrectly, are unsafe, and they are so-o-o heavy and uncomfortable. In addition, they often have very few sizes, if any beyond child and adult, and fit is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING with any bicycle. While these bikes are cheap, the quality also absolutely sucks. (Try picking one of those babies up, then compare it to a bike from an actual bike shop!)

Next: what kind of riding do you want to do? All paved bike paths, on the road, on trails? If you want to do any trail riding, you want a mountain bike. If you are going to only ride on paved paths or roads, you will want a hybrid or road bike.

Find a local bike shop and talk to a sales person about the kind of riding you want to do and your budget. Actually, go to a few shops that sell different brands. Test ride a few different bikes and see what feels good. Different brands all have slightly different geometries. Some good brands to look for include Specialized, Trek, Giant, Gary Fisher (mountain bikes only), Jamis, Cannondale, Bianchi and Fuji. Schwinn is even back in the market making some decent stuff, but only if you buy it from a bike shop, not a big chain store! Jamis bikes are not as widely available as some of these other brands but are often the best priced for what you get.

For just starting out you can find a bike for under $500. Generally avoid anything under $350 unless it is on sale. If you buy after the 2007 models come out, you can probably get a 2006 model on sale this fall.

A road bike (with drop bars and everything) will probably be out of your price range--they generally start up around $600+ since they are not as popular with recreational cyclists. But if you are going to ride on pavement, you can find a 700c wheel hybrid, or "flat bar" road bike in the $500 range. If you are going to be riding off road, stick to the name brands, but you can get an entry level bike in the $400-$500 range.

Dawgface_L

I own a store that sells skateboards, scooters, and mopeds along with their related accessories. I am not doing well in sales and would like to know what else can I sell that will appeal to the customers between 13 to 40 years old.

Answer
If you sell skateboards you could also sell skates and bicycles; safety equipments like helmets and so on. Also sport drinks and water. Brand sport clothing, t-shirts, sport bags, caps (kids love any junk with some fancy logo).

You could aslo ask your customers for some input on what they would like to see.

Most importantly you need to do some advertising.

What is a good Halloween costume that will make me look cute?

Liz C

I am 16 and i want a creative Halloween costume but i also want to look good when going to parties but i don't want to be slutty. Please help me come up with ideas. I could be pippi longstocking, but its not my first choice. I want a unique costume that will make me stand out too. Thanks!! :)

Answer
well it's not exactly cute but it is unique. one year i went as a speed bump :) i dyed white sweat pants and sweat shirt yellow and spray painted the tires on my parents car and had them drive over different places on the sweats and did the same with a bicycle. it was really interesting and everyone thougt it was hillarious.
i also went as a school girl one year but it was a play on words. i just wore things from a lot of different schools. like a tshirt from one school, shorts or sweats from another, a baseball hat, maybe a backpack or a jacket or something from another, whatever you can find actually. and universities are usually easier than high schools because they tend to have more clothing and accessory options.
or you could try to do something cute from everyone's childhood like a character from a tv show. something like strawberry shortcake would be easy since she just wears jeans and a striped shirt and you can usually find her hat in the kid aisle of party supply stores like party city. or do something current like dora the explorer, or get some friends and go as the backyardigans.

Hi there I'm a 13 year old girl, andbim moving 45 mins away from what I used to call home, and my old school everyone loved me all the guys wanted me and I was pretty much a god( not a snobby fake bitch) how can I be sure to get the same respect at my new school... And what If I don't make the cheer or volleyball team? Help? Anyone? Please?

And yes I know, don't be a whore stay true to myself don't become plastic be myself get god grades an keep my parents trust... I've heard it all before

Answer
The best thing is not to go to your new school moaning on about how great the old one was.
Keep in touch with old friends, Dont dive in trying to be miss popular straight away.
We all know girls can be very bitchy and protective over boys !!

Go to school and look around watch people who belongs in what crowd.
Who is the trouble maker.. Who is the school bike etc.
Most people will approach you when you are new they are just nosey.. Where do you come from have you any brothers etc..

Then decide who seems more on your level and who you get on with or like. Remember 3 is always a crowd.
See if there is anyone that lives near you " oh we could walk catch the bus etc ".
You will be fine.. I moved 15 times with my parents in my child hood and
made friends in all the schools it is not easy...
But I have kept friends over the years and we keep in touch.. I even moved from England to Dublin at 14 and left everyone and family..

What are all the parts that I need to assemble a bmx bike?

kids bike brake set image

Jake

My diamondback is real messed up. I bought a DK frame off some kid and now I wanna assemble a decent bike. I just need to know the basic parts I will need. Please help.

Answer
Things You'll Need:
BMX Bike Brakes
BMX Bike Forks
BMX Bike Frame
BMX Bike Gloves
BMX Bike Parts
BMX Bike Pegs
Bike Pumps
Bike Tools
BMX Bike Helmets
BMX Bikes
Step
1
Start with a good flatland-specific frame. These usually have a short top tube, a short rear end and steep angles.

Step
2
Do a quick check of the frame and everything else on the bike to be sure nothing is cracked, bent or broken.

Step
3
Remove any pads, reflectors, chain guards or kickstands.

Step
4
Put axle pegs on the front and rear wheels and cable detanglers on the front and rear brake cables.

Step
5
Position your handlebars so they are straight up and down or in line with the fork. You may be more comfortable with your bars a little further forward or back, but don't go too far in either direction. Some riders like to cut their handlebars' width to just wider than shoulder-width.

Step
6
Remove old grips if they're torn or if the handlebar is showing through. Bar end caps will help protect the ends of the handlebar.

Step
7
Choose a wheel set that has a rear hub specifically designed for flatland, usually called a free coaster. Free coaster hubs allow you to set your pedals at one position, and they will stay there when rolling backward. Hubs with a regular free wheel make the pedals go backward when rolling backward, and coaster brake hubs don't let you set the pedals easily because of the brake in the hub.

Step
8
Use tires that have a smooth tread and inflate them to the maximum air pressure. Most flatlanders run at least 100 pounds of pressure in their tires, even though it is usually well above the recommended pressure on the tires. There are only a few tires rated to that pressure.

Step
9
Tighten all nuts and bolts to their specifications, including axle nuts, stem bolts, pedals, cranks, seat and seat post nuts, brakes, and headset.

Step
10
Lubricate all moving parts, such as brake cables, brake pivot bolts and your chain.

Step
11
Put the correct amount of tension on the chain so that it doesn't fall off when you're riding.

Step
12
Use the smallest front sprocket that you can find. The easier gearing makes it easier to ride away from tricks and the small sprocket will not get in the way.

Step
13
Choose platform pedals over caged pedals.

Step
14
Find the shortest crank arms you can.

Step
15
Adjust your seat to a height and angle that allows good mobility in front and in back.

Step
16
File down any sharp edges on the bike, such as the edges of the stem or handlebars.

How do I know what the best bike for me is?

southernbe

I am looking to get a bike to give me a cardio alternative to walking or running. I haven't ridden a bike since I was a kid, so I am trying to figure out what kind of bike to get -- mountain bike, road bike etc. How do I make sure that I get the right bike for me --- kind and size?

Answer
Start by reading "Bicycles: How to Choose"
http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bicycle.html

It's all based on "where & how" you will be riding. Road bikes will be your fastest choice but for the streets & smooth roads ONLY. Mountain bikes or all-terrain bikes basically suck on the streets because of the knobby off road tires & suspension parts zapping your energy. Knobby tires slow you down. And with every turn of the pedals, part of your energy is absorbed or soaked up by suspension parts. All-terrain bikes are OK on the streets ONLY if they have a smoother "street friendly" tread design & "lock-out" front forks. This (in essence) turns the suspension fork into a rigid fork with the simple twist of a switch.

Hybrids are a good "all around" type bike. They are great at nothing - but still good at many things. They can be ridden on the streets or light (man-made) groomed off-road trails of finely crushed stone.

"How do I make sure that I get the right bike for me --- kind and size?" Nine very, very simple words... See your authorized, independent, knowledgeable, friendly, local BICYCLE shop! Not K-Mart, Wally World or Target. At a REAL bicycle shop you can TRY B4 you BUY! You can test ride as many bikes as your little heart desires before the sale!

Other advantages are...
1) Professional sales - not some minimum wage "associate".
2) Professional assembly of the bike by a certified mechanic - again, not some minimum wage associate.
3) FREE service after the sale. ALL new bikes require a tune-up as shift & brake cables stretch a bit during the break-in process. Some shops do this only once. Some for a year. A bike shop near me does this for LIFE!
http://bigshark.com/about/policies-and-shipping-pg11.htm
4) Vastly better quality. Wally World lists bicycles on their website in the TOY Dept.! Does that give you a clue? A quality bike from a REAL bicycle shop - taken care of properly - can last a lifetime. Those from discount stores are "disposable bikes", meant to be ridden a year or so - then into a dumpster.

See link below. This is my "pride & joy" - a 2011 Raleigh Sojourn touring road bike. Time spent in the shop for repairs? ZERO. Money spent after the sale? A bottle of chain oil (about $8.00) and a set of new tires when the original ones wore out. And I replaced them with the SAME tires. Flat tires to date? ZERO - none - nada. Sure - you'll need to do routine maintenance & cleaning on any type of bike. But getting a quality bike from the start cost LESS in the long run.

Answer
What do you like to do?
If you like skateboarding or snowboarding, hang around an independent skate shop and get to know the owners. They may hire you for odd jobs and pay you "Under the table". If you are really good at skating, ask around for some sponsors and start signing up for competitions and compete for the prize money. My nephew, now 16, has been doing this since he was 12. My brother met friends who own their own skate shops and worked for them helping them sell stuff at X-Games gigs, now he is a manager for Zumeez stores.
If you like working with tools, working on cars, or working with wood or metal in shop class, ask around at independent shops for a job as an apprentice and learn the trade.
If you like digging in the dirt, ask around for work with a landscaping crew, or get a lawnmower and hire yourself out to mow lawns. Some people would still rather pay the neighborhood kid than a stranger to mow lawns.
If you like doing your own thing, scrounge around the neighborhood and collect recycling. You can do this whether you have a regular job or not. Recycling centers here in California are paying $1.78 per pound for aluminum, or you can ask for the 5-10 cent per can or bottle recycling deposit back. We collect about $30 a month on a regular basis just by collecting the bottles and cans we find walking the dogs in our neighborhood every day. The hardworking people who roam the streets and dig through the garbage cans collect about $100 a day this way. You might want to call up recycling centers and ask how much they pay for newspaper or cardboard. There's a recycling center in Los Angeles I know of that is paying up to $75 a ton for clean newsprint paper. I used to earn my gas money when I was in high school by collecting recycling.
If you like selling things, there are lots of things you can make and sell at flea markets and yard sales. We refurbished some free bar stools and sold them for $10 each. We would have sold more if we had more. I know a kid who finds bicycle parts being thrown away, fixes them up and repairs them, paints them really cool and sells them. I know another guy who paid for his tech school training by fixing computers for his friends and selling refurbished computer parts. I know of another kid who won several awards, including trophies and scholarships, for repairing and fixing up his grandfather's old tractor that had been unused for years.
My brother and his friends hung out at a friend's surf shop all the time and ended up working for him shaping surfboards. They also hung out at their friends' dad's gasoline service station and ended up working for him as their other part-time job. Talk up the dads of your friends and get to know your neighbors. Make yourself useful. Be willing and unafraid to start at the bottom. One of the most successful radio disc jockeys practiced his schpiel at home and worked sweeping floors at the radio station. When one of the dj's showed up to work drunk, the kid filled in and was an instant hit. Sometimes the best foot in the door is first to volunteer and be there when opportunity knocks.
Good Luck to you.

I want to spend $200 to $300 on a street bicycle. Is there anything decent for that price range that you would recommend?

Answer
That price range is the tipping point: anything below $200 is going to be Walmart crap, anything over $300 starts to get into semi-decent territory...and escalates in price really fast. Bicycle manufacturers know this and structure their lines to draw you into crossing that magic $300 barrier.

However, that price will get you a very decent, nearly unused bike on Craigslist. Here's the scenario:

Joe says I need to get in shape.
-------------------------------------------------------
Joe says I remember bikes were fun when I was a kid, I'll buy one.
-------------------------------------------------------
Joe says "I'm a grown-up now, I can afford a 'real' bike" and spends $500-$600+ at the LBS
-------------------------------------------------------
Joe rides it once, loves it
-------------------------------------------------------
Joe rides it twice and notices his ass hurts but still likes it
-------------------------------------------------------
Joe reluctantly rides a third time and finds his ass is killing him, his legs are tired and he can't catch his breath.
-------------------------------------------------------
Joe puts it in the garage.
-------------------------------------------------------
Joe's wife makes him put it up for sale 2-3 years later.
-------------------------------------------------------
Joe either dumps it in shame for next to nothing or tries to get his money back, fails miserably and eventually sells the bike at a fire sale price on CL or gives it to his church to sell at the next fundraiser.

Look for one of these and avoid Joe before he gets educated about how much his bike is really worth. If you don't know much about bikes either find a friend who does or stick to the major quality brands: Trek, Cannondale, Specialized, etc. Ask for help on the mass-market brands: Schwinn, Raleigh, (Trek, too), Giant, Fuji -- some are excellent, some are fair to poor. Don't buy old department store brands for any reason: Murray, Huffy, Kent, AMF and stay away from vintage bikes, no matter how gorgeous, unless you have someone with you who really knows what they are doing.

Good luck!

I wonder what this means if you compare bike shop bikes to department store bikes?

Shawn B

I remember over the past couple of years, I've been using a bicycle as my main method of transportation and I remember getting like this Next mountain bike, GMC Denali bicycle, and also a Kent mountain bike from Wal-Mart and within about 2 to 3 months, the crank barrens would go out, spokes would break, the gear sprocket would go out and so forth. So you would say it sure has some wear and tear on it, now for these 2 bicycles that I bought from the bike shop which is a Fuji Royal 27 speed and a Felt sixty nine 27 speed as far as wear and tear gose on them, I just don't know about those bicycles, I been having them so are for the past several months and so far may have got a little dirt on them, but have held up well, so I don't know about them as far as wear and tear gose. What do you think about the Fuji or Felt brand of bicycles compared to other brands like Schwinn, Mongoose, Next, Huffy, or Pacific bicycles. I know the brands of bicycles I have now, you can't find them at any Wal-Mart or K-mart or any Target store, but you can only find them at an independent bicycle shop.

Answer
People who buy bicycles at Wal Mart and Target are buying only by price. So Wal Mart and Target know they can foist off real crap on them, so long as they can beat the prices of bike shops. They're usually buying bikes for their kids, so they don't even really care.

Some manufacturers, like Schwinn, make two kinds of bikes! They make the cheap stuff for Wal Mart and they make a whole different line of good bikes for bike shops. So you can't really go by brand. Some famous old European brands are now made in China and are nothing like the bikes that made their reputation. Anyway it doesn't matter what brand a bike is, it matters what stuff it has on it--deraileurs, sprockets, cranks, shifters, etc.

Also if you look on Craigslist, you see a lot of people will buy a really nice bike, they ride it a few times and then the bike sits in the garage for years & years, and then they put it on Craigslist. You can get some 'vintage' bikes that are 30 years old and they still have the 'whiskers' on the original tires! If I was going to buy another bike, that would be the first place I'd look.

BTW Fuji and Felt both have very good reputations, also brands like Trek and Cannondale and Marin and so forth. Mongoose is a little cheaper. But again, what really matters is what stuff they have on them. And every time I look at bikes I see brands I never heard of! I always suspect they're just rebranded from the brands I know. It isn't hard to set up a new bicycle company because you buy everything outside--shifters, brakes, cranks & pedals, bearings, wheels, etc. etc. You might have a special design for your frame, or you might buy those in bulk from some factory in China that makes frames for everyone else.
