USA made bicycles still made?

ac

Are any casual bikes still made in USA? I remember Huffy, Mongoose and Redline when I was a kid. What's out there now that's affordable for casual users?

Answer
Intense is one of the only true-USA made bikes that I'm aware of.....they use USA-sourced tubing and everything is done in California. Some brands like Cannondale and Trek make a few frames here but most are made overseas....just like every other manufacturer. Don't let that be a thwart to choosing a good bike. Truth be told, the skill in China and Taiwan factories is arguably better than a lot of what we have here in the US anymore.....sadly.

As far as comfort and casual bikes, I'd doubt any are US made. Some may claim "made in the US", but that's 99% probability that they are simply assembled here.....and again, most are made and assembled overseas.

No matter where it's made, just be sure to choose a decent one that suits your needs. You should probably plan on spending at least $250 from a bike shop.....and most of us here would highly recommend that you stay away from Walmart, etc. because those bikes are generally junk in the long run.

What's the best bike for towing kids in?

Samantha 8

I want to buy a bike to ride around the neighborhood and to the park and grocery store with my kids in tow in a trailer. The trailer I'm looking at buying is the Schwinn Joyrider. The bike I'm looking at is the Schwinn Crest Urban Women's Hybrid Bike (700c Wheels), but I'm not sure if this is what I should get? I want something that's easy to ride and that can handle bumps and "easily" tow two kids. If this isn't the right bike for me, please point me in the right direction! Thanks! (if it matters, which I don't think it should since most bikes are adjustable nowadays, I am 5'4'')

Answer
Whoa! Stop! At first I tried researching that bike on the Schwinn website. http://www.schwinnbike.com/usa/eng/ Turned up nothing. Then I did a Google search & found it on Amazon.com.

There are two different divisions of Schwinn every since the bankruptcy years ago. There is still the real bike shop quality Schwinn. Then there is the discount store & big box store Schwinn. Did you ever click on the photo from Amazon.com to zoom in on the bike? Only 24 spokes per wheel vs. the usual 32 to 36 spokes on a better bike. Also only one frame size - 17". At 5' 4" tall, you would more than likely need a 15"-16" frame, not a 17" frame.

If you want to go with a Schwinn, get one from a real bike shop. See 3rd link down. $379 vs. $313.88 for the one on Amazon.com. But the quality is soooo much better. And a real bike shop will insure you get the correct frame size, sometimes called frame geometry.

I do not know how to ride a bike!!!?

HG

I am in my 30s and have NEVER riden a bike. I have tried to learn several times.....no luck! Is it ridiculous to learn how to ride using an adult trike? And is it an effective way to learn?

Answer
Riding a bike is about balance. Not everyone has a good sense of balance, and some folks are too fearful to take the risk of falling.

There are a surprising number of people that never learned to ride a bike. There's no shame in it. Not everyone had someone to teach them when they were children, and not everyone had a safe enough place to ride to warrant learning.

So there! Don't be embarrassed. If you currently have a bike, there are resources online that will guide you through the basics of learning how to ride it. The first step in a well-proven method is to lower your seat, remove the pedals and use it like a scooter (pushing along with your feet on the ground. The low seat height allows you to keep your feet on the ground, and removing the pedals keeps your legs from being struck by them as well as discourages you from using them initially. Afterward, the pedals come on, the seat gets raised a bit, and you practice pedaling on the grass.

If you're scared of falling (not saying you are), riding a bike may seem impossible. Accept that you will fall, but don't *worry* about it. Worrying will slow the whole process down or defeat it.

Are 20 inch mountain bikes only for kids?

Joseph

So I'm 14, almost 15, and also fairly tall. Lately I've been looking to buy a new bike, and I started looking at 20 inch wheel mountain bikes. Now I don't know much about bikes, but I figure that these kinds of bikes would be good for me because I liked how its a small size with 20 inch wheels like a normal bmx bike, but I also liked that it had suspension and the ability to change gears. I was getting ready to order one, but I noticed that the reviews mainly involved parents buying them as gifts for their 8-10 year old kid. Are these kinds of bikes really only meant for small children, and will I look stupid if I buy one for someone as old and as tall as I am?

Answer
Those are little kids bikes you want one with 26" wheels.

beginner bmx bike question? 10 points!?

Chris

I've been looking for a bmx for an adult male and I found some that say 20" bmx, what is the 20 inches referring too? is it the diameter or the tires? or what? also is a 20" bmx even for an adult? I don't want to accidentally buy a kids one or something. Thanks!
*to

Answer
The 20inches is referring to the tire size yes. To avoid the aquard ness of buying a kids bike go to your local bike shop and get a bike there or you can buy a bike online and get one of the top of the line brands like wethepeople, fit, mirraco brands like that. If its not a top brand or you buy it from a big box store like Walmart you are getting 2 things a piece of crap and a kids bike. Real bmx bike go by frame size like 20.5in or something like that and toptube size and frame size are the same things. Have fun bike hunting.

Have you ever had a latex allergy reaction to a hand basket in a grocery store?

Grew

I had one at shaws from the rubbery handle. I couldn't believe it because it did not look like the kind of thing that would contain latex. But apparently it did. It was grey and looked more like plastic but after picking it up it was obviously rubbery because of how soft it was. Am I the only one with a latex allergy this has happened to? Why not list unsuspecting places where you got a reaction.

Mine are:
1. Wheelchair handles while helping a crippled man
2. Grocery basket handles
3. A rubbery grey mouse scroll wheel.

Answer
I have been dealing with a nasty latex allergy for over 10 years
Still can't find a list of everything, that's because it is ambiguis
My rule of thumb has been if it :
sticks
absorbs
stretches
bounces
spongy to the touch
it is widely used in many new produces
Some newsprint has latex ink or latex powder to keep pages from sticking
even latex free bandages have latex powder in the packaging to prevent the band aid from sticking to the wrapper
some brands of disposable diapers have it to adsorb the moisture
tampons & pads can contain it too,for moisture absorption
mascara ,mostly the black
the print on plastic shopping bags
rubber grips on pens ,tools, flashlights & other "easy gripe" items
electrical wires
envelopes ..self sticking & regular ones you lick shut
blood pressure cuffs
bra straps,underwear waist & leg bands,nylons
sneaker soles,shoes with cushion inside,boots
ziplock bags
buttons on remotes
buttons of phones
the nose tabs on eye wear
some air valves on blow up water toys
grips on cooking utensils
rug & carpet backings
baby toys...chew toys
non slip tub grips
bike tires are loaded with rubber (I can't go near the toy isle that has kids bikes)
fishing lures
buttons on laptop keyboards
all latex paints, though people will argue about that, marine paint has the highest amount, the colors they add are mostly pure latex, darker the color the more latex (Sherman Williams customer service rep told me about all paints) if they smell like banana it is the latex.Latex/rubber comes from the same botanical family of trees
pencil erasers
surgical & exam masks have latex powder to absorb the moisture from your breath

the list goes on...
I have only found a list of medical devices since they have tried to switch to polypropylene in the medical field.IV tips can be latex, some switched over to poly, but they found the poly ones did damage to veins since it wasn't as flexible as the latex ones.

if i ever have a daughter, should i name her TwatMuffin?

Twatwaffle

Answer
I say why not! I have heard stranger names than that. My question is What will her middle name be?

The only problem with giving her that name, it will be next to impossible to get her one of those little personalized license plates for her bicycle. I could see you standing at the display at Toys-r-US looking through all the names on the little plates screaming "Why the heck don't they have my kids name, they have names like Mary, and Susan, how come they don't have any that say TwatMuffin?"

What do you think of modern spelling of names?

Jennifer

What is your opinion when people decide to do a modern spelling of a name

Answer
I think it is ignorant, and I feel sorry for the kid because for their entire life they have to spell their name. They also won't be able to find anything like those cute little license plates for their bicycles!

Bicycle sidecars?

superfortr

This is more than 1 question, but recently I've gotten interested in possibly putting a side car on my bike and was wondering about a few things.
Is it street legal (for St. Louis, Missouri really, but anywhere)?
Does it make driving the bike harder?
What about balancing? Does it make balancing harder or easier (like a tricycle)?
Is there any company who builds them cheaply in the US?
And is there any special way to attach it?

Answer
The only manufacturer I know of is Chariot Carriers based in Canada. Here is a link to the site
http://www.chariotcarriers.com/english/html/sidecarrier.php

It will set you back around $380
http://www.rei.com/product/753239

The reviews that I read when I researched these were very favourable. They are easy to get on and off (special hitch). You can keep a close eye on your child and chat easily. There is less dirt thrown on them from the rear wheel. Unfortunately I need one for the other side of the bike (right hand drive country)and they don't make one, otherwise I was sold.

There should be no legal problems using them on the road. (that I'm aware of). Drop Chariot carriers an email to make shore or check Missouri's vehicle code.

What is this children's book??

Michael

Okay, so I'm just running into a mental wall when I try to recall the name of this book that I read about ten years ago. It was a children's book, as in it was in the children's section of the library, but it was fairly long. I think the title was something the "The Emerald of Aslfkjs" or "The Jewel of Sdfkjslk." I remember that the last word was weird⦠If it helps, I believe that I remember some of the details of this book. There were three women living on an island, and for some reason, they had to go get a young boy. They believed that they had identified him, but unfortunately this boy was very nasty. On the other hand, they also ran into a nice boy, who was the same age. In the end, the nice boy turned out to be the prince/wizard/whatever, and the fat boy was not. There was a scene where the fat boy was demanding a wizard to turn stuff into gold, and the wizard was very relieved, because this was a simple request-- I remember that the line in the book went something like "any wizard worth his salt could turn [metal] into gold." I know I don't have many details, but if anyone knows what this book is called, I would be super grateful. I believe the author. who I'm like 90% sure was a woman, wrote a book about how an unsuccessful witch married a man who was very surprised to realize that she was pretty. There was a picture in this other book where she's sprawled out in the bed with her hair all scattered about. I suppose if you know of this other book. Thank you, and I'm sorry I'm being so vague. This is killing me!

Answer
That sounds like "The Secret of Platform 13" by Eva Ibbotson, who also wrote "Which Witch?" and "The Star of Kazan".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Which_Witch%3F_%28novel%29
http://www.librarything.com/work/247431/reviews

" 'Any wizard worth his salt can make gold, but it isn't very interesting to watch.' 'I don't believe you. I don't believe you can do it.' Cor turned and clapped his hands, and three wizards came to him at once. 'His Highness wishes us to make gold,' he said wearily. 'Find me some base metal - a bit of guttering from a drain pipe ... an old bicycle wheel . . . anything."
