What are the things attached to bikes that kids can ride in?

kids bike seats and trailers
on Child bikes, seats and trailers + About Bike Hire
kids bike seats and trailers image

Emma

Those buggies that can be attached to the back of a bike so someone (or more than one person) can pull it. Not the small strollers that only seat one, or the seats that can be strapped on. I'm talking about the actual 2+ people carts. And it needs to be able to fit on the sidewalk.

â¢What are these called?
â¢Where can I get them?
â¢About how much do they cost?
â¢How much can they seat?
â¢How old do you have to be to not fit in it anymore? (ex. only kindergarten - 2nd can ride)

Any other information would be great too. Thanks! :)

How do you make a bicycle trailer?

Meady

I am 14 and i wanted to know how to make a push-bike trailer, made out of wood, as it is close to hard rubbish time and i would like to collect some rubbish. If you know how to make it , please reply to this question!

Answer
The important parts of a trailer are the wheels and the hitch. The in between part is what makes it useful but you can tie things on with rope or attach a large plastic bin - like a rubbermaid style bin, or a clothes basket... but that can be done after.

Wood is a pretty heavy material and not strong in the ways you need for a bike. Using steel welded together from old bikes is best. Also you could use chopped up old bikes if you don't weld or have metal tools by using a simple plumbing tube cutter and hose clamps.

However, if you insist on using wood... you can be creative.

First you definitely need bike wheels. Try to find an old maybe even broken - children's bike. You need 2 wheels of the same size. Smaller wheels are stronger than bigger wheels so kids bikes are perfect. Also they are much cheaper and thrown away more often so you are more likely to find them.

Next you need something like a bike fork to mount the wheels in. This could be as simple as using the fork from the kids bike you got the wheel from - and then finding another matching fork from an identical kids bike. Finding matching scrap bikes is sometimes hard though. And it isn't wood. If you are using wood you basically have to make something similar to a fork but out of wood. You could use two beams of wood of the same size on either side of the wheel - then drill a hole for the axle in each size - you can drill both holes or even all 4 (for both wheels) all at the same time to make them match up. You will need either very strong wood or thick wood and it may take some figuring out to have it strong but thin enough for the axle to have the bolt fit on the other side.

Now for the decisions. How big a trailer do you want? I suggest basing your design around the container you are going to use. Do you have a large plastic bin of a certain size? Metal or wood would also do but would be heavier/stronger.

For instance, If you have a wooden bin or crate it might be strong enough to be integral to the bike trailer frame. Then you just attach the wheels with the forks to either side of the crate. Put the wheel in the middle of the crate so that your trailer will be balanced in the middle with the wheels carrying the weight. Have the crate be oriented with the opening at the top (of course) and the wheels in the middle of the longer sides so that the trailer is longer than it is wide. Place the Wheels such that the ground clearance underneath the trailer is about 6 inches. The lower you can put the mass to the ground the more stable and balances the trailer will be. However, you need about 6 inches of clearance to go over bumps in the road - etc.

If you are going to use a plastic (or other material) bin/crate/basket/bucket that is not strong enough to form the frame of the trailer you will have to make a frame for the bin to sit on top of or in. This could be a rectangle that supports the bin from the edges. Or it could support the bin from underneath with a U shape. It depends on the material you use. Mount the wheels in the centre on the long sides with about 6" of underneath clearance just as you would if the bin/crate were part of the frame.

Now you will have an almost finished trailer than should be balanced if you hold it. Now test it out and load something in it. Test to see if it is strong enough or you have to add more structure.

Next you make the arm which attaches the trailer to the hitch on your bike. Steel or wood this is pretty simple. Attach in to the middle on (what you decide is) the front of your trailer that you have so far. The easiest place to pull the trailer from is from the seat post. So you basically just need an arm that goes from the top/front of the bin support frame towards just lower than your seat. This should have a curve in it or even a right angle. You need to allow space for the wheel to pass underneath the bar. You need 6" clearance there also because as you ride a bike and turn or go over bumps that distance gets closer.

Finally you have to add the hitch. The hitch could be very complicated if you want it to be very convenient. But since you are using wood we will keep it simple. The easiest place to attach the trailer hitch to your bicycle is to your seat post. There are lots of options but it needs to wrap around the seat post. You could use old bicycle inner tube or bicycle tire to make a flexible linkage. Or you could drill a seat post sized hole in your thick wood. Keep in mind the trailer has to pivot in all directions ideally - up/down, side to side, and twisting. so you have to be creative.

You might also consider attaching the trailer hitch instead to a bike rear rack or "rat trap" style rear race rack. If you have one on your bike already. This will probably not be as strong as attaching to the seat post but it may be easier. If you do that make sure the pivot point that you attach to is exactly above the centre of the rear bicycle wheel because that will make it work b

I am currently 15 and want to get into motocross. Im 6'2, 185 what size bike would be best for me? 250cc? What year? (if that matters) and some tips on where to get helmets, pads, ect. would be very helpful and also where to find races my age. I assume i can find local ones considering i live in texas.
The way i put this kinda seems like i want to jump into it in a month. Which is wrong i know im going to have to practice a lot and some beginner tips on what to improve on would be great also.

Answer
You are not the first person to ask this question, but since Yahoo Answers decided they wanted to change their format and go with this stupid new format, I can't find it. So now I am going to have to type this all over again.

Okay.
First you are going to need to purchase a bike. For your height and weight you should be on a 250cc 2-stroke, 450cc 4-stroke or an open class 2-stroke. You will fit on any modern motocross bike.

Since you are just starting out, I would shy away from the open class 2-strokes, they are serious beasts.

Since you are not going to try and start racing right off the bat and you did not say if you have any riding experience, I would go with a 250cc 4-stroke. They have adequate power and are easy to learn to ride. I like 2-strokes for racing, but there are only three manufacturers that are still making new 2-strokes = Yamaha, KTM and Husqvarna.

Once you decide on a bike, you will then need to locate one. I would recommend you purchase new, but if the budget is tight and you are not going to be competing right from the get go, a used bike is more than adequate. If you go 4-stroke look for a bike made from 2000 to present. If you go 2-stroke you can go all the way back to the 1990's to present. There are those people that will tell you that you can't be competitive on an old 2-stroke, they don't know what they are talking about - The Retro Kid: http://vurbmoto.com/blogs/jerry-robins-kickin-it-old-school/14270/

You can find used bikes on Ebay, Craigslist, CycleTrader and BikeFinds. This will also be some of the sites that you will look for used motocross gear. Ebay, Craigslist, flea markets and garage sales. The only piece of gear I recommend you purchase new is a helmet. Make sure the helmet is SNELL approved. You can find new SNELL approved helmets on line. HJC makes a line of inexpensive SNELL approved helmets.

Bear minimum gear is: SNELL approved helmet, goggles, long sleeve shirt, long pants and motocross boots. You can get generic goggles on Ebay for under $15.00. Use an old sweat shirt as your long sleeve shirt. Military BDU pants work well. Motocross boots can be very expensive, unless you go used. Motocross boots are very tough and will last for decades. Oneal, Thor, Ocelot, etc all make good boots and you can find them used on Ebay, Craigslist, flea markets and garage sales. I have picked up used motocross boots for $25.00. After you have the basic gear, then you can look into shoulder pads with chest protector, gloves, racing jersey with elbow pads and armored racing pants. Wal Mart sells padded mechanics gloves that work well for motocross gloves, they cost about $25.00. You can usually find these items used also at the same places you found other used items at. Don't worry about the used gear being scratched, chipped and faded. You are not trying to make a fashion statement, you just want protective gear.

After you get the gear, you will need transportation for your bike, gear, tools and fuel. Most guys use a pick up truck, van or trailer. Once you get transportation then all you need to do is ride. If you don't know where to ride at, you can check Yahoo or Google for local motocross tracks in your area. You can also check the local shops and ask them where tracks are in your area.

Basic riding tips:
Stand up over rough terrain. Keep your knees slightly bent so they act like shock absorbers. If you sit on the sit or if you keep your knees locked, the motorcycle will buck you off.
It is okay to put your inside foot down when turning. This helps keep your balance as you go through. This is why you want motocross boots. They have a uni-direction tread that will slide as you put your foot down. If you use normal boots, they will stick when you put your foot down.
When making a turn, slide up on the seat to the gas tank. This puts weight onto the front wheel so that it sticks better, you can also lean forward as you have your foot out so you put even more weight on the front end while turning.
When going over rough terrain you want to keep the front end light and the gas on. The rear wheel driving will make the front end light and allow it to skim over bumps and ruts. If you let off, the front wheel will dive into those bumps and ruts. This technique also works for sand and mud.

Good luck, have fun and welcome to the sport.

what are things people buy a lot of on craigslist?

jerkin

things worth anywhere for $75 to $300 . What items in that price range are most popular ? and how can i get them for the least amount of money ?

Answer
Things I would buy on craigslist are furniture (bed, dresser, dining table, couch, standing lamp etc.), baby items (stroller, car seat, crib, jolly-jumper and similar large toy/activities, etc.), large kids toys (trampoline, pool, bikes, etc.), sports equipment (surf boards, golf clubs, etc.) and cars.

I would never bother with anything smaller like clothes or nick-knacks.

As for how you can get them for the least amount of money, I would say that these things often go for way less at yard sales than they do on craigslist (go early to get the best stuff, or late to get the best deals on stuff that didn't sell).

What should i look for in a mountain bike?

spridder

Im in the market for a mountain bike. I havent bought a bike since i was a kid many years ago. What should i be looking for in a bike these days? I would primarily use the bike on paths and mostly trails. also, what are some decent manufactures?

Answer
It really depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to do. if you want to do cross country mountain biking, look for weight (the lighter the better), the derailleurs, (I like Sram XTRs), the travel( this is basically how far the shocks can move, for cross country you want 4.5 inches or less), and the shocks. Fox shocks are usually the way to go in my book but Rock Shox Recons are awesome. if you are looking for a full suspension bike, Fox Floats are good rear shocks for the money. just know that climbing with a full suspension bike can be a bitch because they are usually heavier and a lot of the power from your pedal goes into the shocks instead of the chain. for Downhill bikes, I'm not really sure, but I know that you want durability and a lot more travel (7-10 inches)

how can I teach 5 year old to ride his bike?

sarahjane1

I just took the training wheels off his 12 inch two wheeler. Any tips on helping him learn to ride?

Answer
Assure him that you will run beside him and hold the seat of his bike so that he won't fall. Once he gets going, you can let go of his seat for a time. Don't tell him that you're doing that. Once he gets up to about 10-20 seconds without you holding onto the seat, show him your hands and tell him that he's been riding without your help.

My dad taught every kid in the neighborhood how to ride that way. He took pride in it.

Im I a bad parent for doing this?

I am the c

I have a 4 year old daughter. She is treated so special by her family , me and her dad. Her grandmother gave her a bike, the uncle and aunt gave her lots of dolls, clothes, and money. She has cousins that give her toys, and her dad buys her more toys, take her out to fun places and trips and etc.
Now for ME! Out of everyone who gives her stuff.... I go OVER WITH MYSELF!! I buy her TOO much stuff. Almost everyday I come home with a bunch of new toys for her, or it can be clothes, a bag full of candy. I even going to set up a party in Disney land for her in 2 months. I spend about hundreds of dollars on my only daughter. ....I been doing this since the day she was born. Now she is so use to this, that she knows she gets whatever she wants. If she see something on tv she likes. She goes....I want that! Or can i have that. Over and over all the time.

Anyway ....Just yesterday my daughter wanted something that cost over 200 bucks. I though what she was looking at was a waste of money for me. So I told her...maybe another time. Then she started crying.
So ...I hated to see her cry like that, so I got it anyway, just to make her happy.

Im I a bad parent??...What should I do??

Answer
No, you are not a bad parent, but you are far too indulgent. You are raising a spoiled child and this presents many problems not only now, but in the future. You absolutely are not doing your daughter a favor by giving in to her every whim. She can't appreciate anything and never will when it is so readily handed to her. What's going to happen when she is 20 years old and wants a new summer wardrobe? Do you think she will get a job to pay for it? Of course not...why should she?? Mommy, daddy, aunts and uncles have always given her everything! She will cry and throw fits at that age until you buy her what she wants. If you continue spoilimg you daughter, you will end up with a co dependant, spoiled woman whom you still support because no man will want to be saddled with someone like that.

Start spoiling your daughter with love and quality time together that does not involve a lot of money. Take a picnic to the park, feed the ducks, go to a childrens museum, water parks...hve fun with her but you will have to stop giving into her. If she cries, so what! Children experiencing disappointment in life is a character builder. You need to get her ready for the harsh world out there and you are hindering her, creating a weak person. I know you love your daughter and don't want that for her.

How can I decide which is safer...a front or rear mounted child seat on my bike?

kids bike seat front or back image

San Jose M

My hubby says putting a child seat on the front of my beach cruiser is wrong. But from what I've been reading, the front is safer than the rear. Plus I would rather see my son.

Is there a site I can go to that would give me a definite answer?
What do you do?

Thanks!

Answer
Front-mounted seats are very popular and have been used in Asia and Europe for decades. They are less common in North America. Many people swear by these because it is easier to keep an eye on the child and have a conversation with them, and get the child in and out with greater ease. The fore-aft position of the child affects stability. More mass over the front wheel is more stable than mass over the rear wheel. Therefore, a front child seat will be more stable than a rear child seat.

Over three years old a trailer for sure. Most kids get too tall before too heavy for seats.

Should I buy a toddler bike seat that fits in front of me or behind me?

bettiebee4

I'm not sure whether to buy the new style toddler bike seats such as those at: http://www.weeride.com.au/ or the more traditional style that sits on the back of the bike.

I know they don't take as much weight, but thats about the only negative I can see so far.

Any feedback on them for those that have them?

Answer
Many parents like the top tube mount seats because of the "closeness" with the child. Being able to talk easier. Having their arms around -- to protect the child so to speak.

Like you said the seat isn't rated for as much weight, but they also have a size limitation. The larger child should be behind you, especially if the parent is petite.

If you get the rear seat the child can ride in it longer, say from 1 yr to 4+ years old. Usually, somewhere between 4 and 5 the kid learns to ride a bike on their own.

tom s

when i was a kid,dad got me a 20 dollar basketball or a baseball bat or something..a bike if i was lucky..lol...NOW!!,kids want them 500 dollar toys,or a cell phone..sheesh,What up with that?

Answer
On one hand they could but on the other hand they may not be...

They Are:

1. They get alot of attention, get what they want when they want, No discipline from parents most of the time in america,

2. There are tons of things even made for 3 year olds that involve electronics. Even baby's have like 3 different carries, bouncy seats and cribs...and not to mention toys and stuff out the wazoo.

3. Kids want cellphones when they are like 7 or older. I'm 13 and I dont even use my cellphone only to get my mom to pick me up from school. Other than that there isnt any other use for it except taking an occasional picture...I dont see why they are so "cool" they are so boring, you dont do anything on it...

4. Kids want to be teenager wannabees at like 8 and up. They are growing up way too fast. They think they have to have everything and dress to the nines to be cool.

5. There are so many electronics out there that cost tons of money and they barely use them. And if they do find something they like they have to have it all the time or they constantly have to be entertained. No more watching the sunset or watching the scenery on a road trip. It's always watching movies, or playing on game systems

They aren't spoiled:

1. Back then we didnt have all those cool gadgets. The "in" thing was barbie dolls and stuff like that. Now the "in" thing is gadgets. So really kids dont have a choice if they want to have simpler games. They are introduced to expensive gaming systems and stuff like that. So really you cant blame them for wanting stuff that our culture now a days uses just like back then the culture was simpler.

2. They dont realize that you have to work for your money. they think it grows on trees so they ask for what ever they want. They dont care what the price is. back then my mom lived on a farm and they did back breaking chores everysingle day. Kids now wouldnt dream of doing those chores. Back then everyone knew how hard money was to get and it was hard work. Now kids just think money is easy to get because they dont do chores and their parents work all day and they dont know how it all works. So really you cant blame them because they dont know that money is earned. And you have to work for it. Back then at young ages kids knew all that stuff because they were a part of it.

That is basically both views on if you think they are spoiled or not...

Mommies, what are your kids getting for Christmas this year?

wonderingi

Particularly the "Venture" style. And, did anyone order it direct from the website? If so, where can you take it if there is a problem?

Answer
Love the stroller, hate the car seat, would never buy the travel system.

You can try out the strollers or at least some of the models at Target and Toys R Us/Babies R Us. I love them, they're comfortable for my kids, easy to maneuver, easy to go through sand, dirt, grass, whatever, and I haven't tried out a nicer stroller. I love the large wheels that are bicycle wheels so that it's easy to fix them and for them to go over obstacles. :)

However, I don't like the car seat because you can try them at Target as well, and you have to put the two hooks together then push them into the seat-belt latch, and when working with a restless baby that would be a nightmare. Graco and other infant seats let you push in one side then the other, which makes it a lot easier when you're working with a restless baby.

I also don't like people putting the baby in a car seat outside of the car. It makes the car seat at risk for knocking against things and becoming damaged, as well as it curves the baby. SIDS research says over and over that we need to lay the baby flat or be carrying the baby, and research has proven that while car seats save their lives in an accident you should limit their time in a car seat (or anything that tilts them) to less than 3 hours in a day and no more than 1 hour at a time, and basically not use it in anything but the car.

So the stroller is nice, get the stroller, but order it through something like Target or Walmart's or babies r us so that you can take it there if there's a problem. Skip the car seat, get one that is better and will work better. Carry the baby for the first 4 months, either your arms or a Moby Wrap for a cheaper alternative to something like an Ergo, it's really not hard. Do a search on car-seat breathing and you'll find the studies done about the dangers.

Add: Looked at the stroller. It's not the jogger that I prefer. If you're going to go with that style of stroller, look at the Chicco strollers. They lay completely flat, so it's better for the SIDS aspect, and have better reviews. I honestly wouldn't get a Baby Trend stroller that's not the jogger because they don't push well, don't maneuver, don't move well. It's all about the wheels and those little wheels always are a pain in the neck on strollers.

This is one similar to what I thought you were talking about. They're approved for babies about 2 months up.

If I want to loose weight using exercises, would a good crosstrainer do?

leatherbik

Although I cycle every day about half an hour to my work and back, although I workout two times a week I'm overweight. It's not because I eat bad food, or eat between meals, but I tend to eat too much, especially too much meat.

I've tried to diet, but dieting makes me think more and more about food, so I thought maybe it's good to do more excercising.

Doing more workout in the gym costs me too much time. So I thought about some calory burning machine, like a bicycle, or crosstrainer.

If most fat is on my abs, is a crosstrainer a good choice? Or are there better ways to train every day about twenty minutes?

Answer
The following healthy living recommendations will help you if youâre trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:

*1) Burn more calories then you're consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm

Get a diet and fitness calculator that you can put on your computer or cell phone. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.

Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:
Adults: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
Teens/Children: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/exercise/weight/bmi.html

It is difficult and unhealthy to lose more than one or two pounds per week. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. If you eat 500 fewer calories per day for a week you will lose one pound. If you burn through exercise 500 more calories per day for a week you will lose one pound.

*2) Eat natural and organic foods found on earth versus something created by a corporation to make money. Eat meals in small portions throughout the day and take a good multi-vitamin supplement.

Avoid âHigh Glycemic Load Carbsâ (sugar, pastries, desserts, refined starches such as breads, pasta, refined grains like white rice; high starch vegetables such as potatoes) and drink lots of water. Read this article for more information on high GL Carbs:
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/carbohydrates.html

*3) Exercise on most days by doing cardiovascular training and/or resistance training activities.

Read a book or find a certified trainer to make sure your doing all resistance training exercises correctly. A great book to buy that teaches you the resistance training basics is âWeight Training for Dummiesâ. A superb magazine to buy with resistance training routines that will not get you bored is "Muscle and Fitness". Signup for the free newsletter. An excellent free online resource is at http://www.exrx.net/

A good book to buy that teaches you the cardiovascular training basics is âFitness for Dummiesâ.

*4) Get plenty of sleep. Sleep experts say most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for optimum performance, health, and safety.

*5) Educate yourself continually on health issues and make a life long commitment to good health. A great free publication is âDietary Guidelines for Americans 2005â. A superb book to read is âYou The Ownerâs Manualâ. An excellent periodic publication is the âNutrition Action Health Letterâ. Hey There - we are looking to get a couple of bikes to ride around white rock lake with our 22 month old son. We are novices - so we just want something decent, but doesn't need to be the tour de france. Also - what is the best seat for the baby to get? Thanks!

Answer
You do not put a child of 22 months on a bike!!! Are you out of your mind?

OTOH your child can ride WITH you on almost any bike with age appropriate compatible equipment

The child goes on/in the equipment, the equipment attaches to the bike/bikes you choose.

Got it?

Generally speaking if/when your child is old enough to hold his/her head up WITH an infant helmet the progression is usually this:

infant to toddler - best solution is a child trailer. Your kid is sheltered, somewhat protected, sheltered from the sun, and if YOU take a tumble the trailer stays upright!! This will let you go from novice to experienced while your child is safe.

A trailer can go on almost any bike. Some will convert from trailer to jog/stroller.

Check with your local bike shop.

DO NOT BUY AT A BOX STORE. Your LBS will show you how to attach it safely and use it and what bikes will be compatible.

Toddler to lets say maybe 4-5 depending on kid. Some manner of rear mounted child seat. Who knows what will be available by the time the fruit of your loins reaches that age. Same principle, go to your LBS and have them show you how to safely attach it to your bike.

BTW in all this and at all stages GET A HELMET FOR YOUR CHILD and you too. Makes no sense for the child to survive and you to be relearning the alphabet. ;-)

5-9 or so depending on child: tag-along trailer. Like a tandem in principle attaches to your bike. Your child can pedal ... or not. But gets the feeling of participating and helps Mom/Dad move along. You know where said child is (behind you). Said child is not likely to hit me or veer all around the trail unless you do that too ;-)

9 and up plus or minus depending on your child, their interest etc now you may be talking ride with their very own bike or some equip a tandem with crankset the right length for said kid (which can be adjusted as your kid grows)

Have fun out there!!!!!!

How do you ride a bike without training wheels?

Linda

I am nine and I can't ride my bike without training wheels! I have not rode it in years.I really want to ride it because I don't have any training wheels and I got a brand new bike that is my favorite color. I didn't want to until I went to the park and saw my friend and I was chasing her while she rode a bike without the spare wheels. Now I really want to! I will try her way tomorrow after I get to my house, but if I can't hang on to her way i'm taking my scooter to the park. If her way doesn't work, best answer deserves a lot of credit.

Answer
Well first of all, training wheels are for little kids. I doubt they even make them in a size you would need.

But actually training wheels are obsolete. The new way to teach a kid to ride a bike is what's called a 'gravity bike' (and I have NO idea why it's called that. It makes no sense to me. But that's what they call it.) What you do is take the pedals off a bike. You lower the seat so you can put both feet flat on the ground. Then you push the bike along with your feet. They make bikes for little kids that don't have cranks or chains or anything, just two wheels and adjustable seat height.

You push the bike along with your feet and learn to balance and steer. After not too long you could coast down a mild hill with your feet off the ground, you can steer by leaning without putting your feet down. Then you're ready for a real bike with pedals.

Training wheels will get you pedaling and all that, but you're not really learning to ride a bike, which has to do with balancing and steering. It's something nobody can teach you, you just get a feel for it.

The 'gravity bike' idea has resulted in kids learning to ride at a much younger age. In my day we all learned around 5 or 6 but these days I see three year olds on bikes! Which I think is great! I've never heard of a nine year old learning that way, but why not? A person your age actually has better balance than a five year old, so it should be even easier.

Riding a bike is a lot of fun! I do it almost every day. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Get a helmet, though, and expect to fall two or three times before you get good at it. It's all part of learning.

Where can I buy an electric dirt bike?

SuperNik7

I am 14 years old and I want an electric dirt bike to ride around my neighborhood or the woods. In Ohio where I live, I can`t find any place that sells them, or online besides Zero but they are way too expensive and little big for me. I don`t want a little kid one that is tiny, I want a good one my size. I am 5'5" and looking for something like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scasEb2D4DI

I don`t think I am able to build one either because I have no experience in building electric dirt bikes neither do I have the money to do so. I do not want a gas powered dirt bike because it would require a licence plate, gasoline, and i cant ride it on side walks :/ plus it`s a little loud too.

10pts for best answer! Thanks!

Answer
you dont need a license to ride a off road dirt bike. You just need the off road registration in order to ride on public lands that allow these bikes. Otherwise you can ride all you want on private property. Also an electric one will be a hassle how are you going to charge it when you are away from home in the woods or out and about?

Whats the best kind of dirt bike for a 4 year old?

kingelkhun

Yeah you read that right, a 4 year old. Whats the best kind of 49cc dirt bike to get for a 4 year old? And Im talking a REAL dirt bike. Not a power wheel or a plastic wal mart razor electric imitaion dirt bike. Im talking yamaha, suzuki, etc etc. Whats the best dirt bike to get my 4 year old.

Answer
I agree with Yamaha pw50. That's what both of my kids learned on. It is shaft drive, so no chain to get caught in, no shifting or clutch, and the kill switch has a "start" position which will only let it idle until you switch it to "run", which prevents accidental take-offs. They are extremely reliable too.

What are some great things to do in Santa Monica California aside from the pier?

boys youth bikes image

Copper Cow

The woman I am dating has two sons-One is 15 and the other is 12. The weather may not be that nice so we want to spend a few hours on the pier and then do some things that are indoors. We are looking for budget priced things.

Any help or links is much appreciated :-)

Ps. We are not foreigners and live about 40 miles away.

Also- Are there some original inexpensive restaurants you may know of?

Answer
There are so many awesome activities in Santa Monica, but most are outdoors to take full advantage of our fantastic weather. Lately we've had a bit of "June Gloom," but the sun pokes through the clouds by the afternoon, and the temperature hovers around 67. Unless you are coming in late autumn when the Santa Ana winds flare up or during the winter, the weather should cooperate.

I absolutely love spending time on the beach biking, skateboarding, rollerblading, surfing, playing volleyball or just chilling, so if the boys are into such active pursuits they could bring their equipment along. There is an amazing public beach house that just opened up, and is very reasonably priced.

Other ideas:
~ The Third Street Promenade: it's chock full of stores, movie theaters, cafes and restaurants and often has great entertainers.
~ Main Street: charming little street with fun stores, and a fantastic Sunday Farmers Market
~ Bay Shores Lanes: bowling alley
~ Palisades Park: really pretty park beside the Pier that extends along Ocean about a mile. There is a lovely rose garden towards the end near Adelaide.
~ The Getty Villa: it's actually in nearby Pacific Palisades on the border of Malibu, but it's close to SM
~ Montana: yet another street with charming stores & eateries. I don't know that the boys would get that much of it, but there are some great restaurants.
~ Skatepark: I'm 17 and when I was 12-15 all my guy friends were addicted to this place, and we still hit it up sometimes. It's only like $3 or $4 for youth. There is also one at the Boys & Girls club anyone from SoCal 18 or under can hang at for free, and while the boys were there you guys could hang at the Santa Monica Library, which is actually really cool, right down the street.

Restaurants:
Omelette Parlor ~ Main Street - charming, affordable
Mani's ~ Main
Urth ~ Main
The Victorian Baker ~ Main Street (only on weekends, love this place)
Jinky's ~ 2nd Street
The Tudor House ~ 2nd Street
Barneys ~ 3rd Street Prom (day only, it's over 21 at night)
Interim ~ Wilshire - I looove this place
Babalu ~ Montana
The Novel Cafe ~ Main Street

There are literally dozens upon dozens more, but these are some of my favorites.

Have fun!

What is the best collar/leash to get for an active boxter to stop pulling when walking and jogging?

chelys

My Boxer is very strong and pulls allot when walking and jogging especially when he sees kids in bikes( he wants to run after them) or any rolling leafs or trash in the park. I would like to know of a good collar to be able to control him better.

Answer
It sounds like your boxer is exhibiting prey drive, he is stimulated by things moving quickly and away from him. Some think that this is sufficiently dangerous that you need a serious correction to immediately stop it from happening.

There are all kinds of aversives from Cesar's Illusion collar, choke collars, haltis, gentle leaders, shock collars, etc. The most aversive are probably the prong (pinch) and shock collars. All of them have problems from whiplash in the head collars to serious damage from improperly used choke collars.

If you think this is a case of prey drive, you may want to invest in a trainer who can teach you how to use these tools properly so that you do not injure your dog either physically or mentally. If this is a case of a young dog not being trained to walk on leash, you can do the follow-me routine. Go somewhere dull and uninteresting with no distractions. Walk with your dog starting with a loose leash that forms a "U".

Whenever the leash becomes taut, you reverse direction and go the opposite way. You praise him for following you - you can provide a small treat as well. Dogs tend to ignore us if we let them and a taut leash means that they are paying more attention to their surroundings than they are to where we are.

The loose leash routine can take awhile or it can happen very quickly.

why do cops go after blacks and latinos more than others?

kaine

I always see how they target us and always take us to prison for no reason.
For example i was watching a cops show and when he passed a group of white kids he didnt notice but when he saw to black kids on bikes he gets out of the car and attempts to arrest them.

Answer
/ TV shows portray exactly what they want you to believe and see.

In reality, there are more Black and Latino crimes committed in the United States than by any other group. Those are stats based on convictions, not arrests. To convict, the court needs proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

So the true question is, Why do Blacks and Latinos commit more crimes than another race?

What's a good way to teach a child to ride a bike?

I am a nanny and am working with a set of parents who really think it's time their daughter ride her bike without training wheels. She's definitely physically ready and has good balance, etc., but doesn't really seem confident in herself and won't concentrate. If we stop taking her out she gets upset because then she can't get her brand new purple bike, but if we do take her out, she purposely wobbles the bike. We've tried talking to her and we hold onto the back of the seat while she rides. Are there any other tips you could offer? Nothing mean and nasty about pushing the kid--the parents have decided on this approach with the child (and the mom's a child psychologist so she knows what she's doing), I just need to take her outside every day and "practice" until she gets it... Any suggestions?

Answer
We spent a great deal of time trying to teach our son to ride his bike. Riding on grass helped quite a lot, as did spending a lot of time running along holding the seat while he got used to balancing and pedaling and steering at the same time. We also found practicing for short periods often helped keep everyone from getting too frustrated. The reality is most kids won't do it until they are ready emotionally - the physical readiness usually comes long before the emotional readiness. Good luck!

What age do kids typically start to learn to ride a bike?

Mikey's Mo

Sorry for such a silly question, but I'm just not sure.

I have a new toddler bike with training wheels for my niece. She is 2 now (3 in September). I'm not sure if she'll be able to start riding this summer, or if I should wait until her birthday or Christmas to give her the bike so she can ride next summer. Or, is 3 even too young?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
She can probably start riding now, depending on the size of the bike. You want a bike that is correctly sized. A child will go through several bikes. There is not a one size fits all. My kids are on their fourth set of bikes and they are 8 & 9. They began riding at 2 1/2. One was riding without training wheels at 3 1/2 and the other at 4 1/2.

I was without training wheels at 3 1/2 too.

It's easier when they are young. They have less of a fear. Only with age do we develop fear.

Police took my bike and wont return it?

jay

Every day i ride to school and my red and yellow mountain bike. i lock it up near the police station on the railing for some stairs. after school i left and didnt see it i asked around and found out the police had it locked up in evidence. i told them i didnt know i could lock it up out there and they said i cant get it back without a recipt. The bike is 4 years old!! I even tryed to get my mom to get it back but no luck. Are the police lying or do i really need evidence that the bike is mine. i live in new jersey.

Answer
Weird! You would think that the police would have better things to do than confiscate your bike!

What kind of "evidence" is it?

Do you have a bill of sale from when you bought the bike? Do you have the serial number of the bike? At least, you have the key to the padlock that you used to lock it to the rail!

I cannot imagine why the cops took your bike unless one wanted it for his kid! This is unconscionable! If the cops won't give it back, write letters to the chief of police, the mayor, the city council, your local state legislators, the newspapers, and anyone else you can think of!

I would be so pi$$ed about this that I would leave no stone unturned to get the bike back! Actually, while answering this, I have gotten so mad that your cops are lucky that I don't live in New Jersey! I would be tearing heads off!

What should I do about storing our bicycles outdoors?

Our garage is too full...we need to find another storage option for 2 adult-size bikes and 2 kid bikes. I want to be able to securely lock up the bike, but also protect it from rusting in the rain. We own our own home and have a small backyard with some extra space. Any suggestions???

Answer
You should weigh your options with all the junk in the garage and determine what is more important to you, those boxes that have stuff you havent touched or looked at in over 4 years or the well being of your bikes from having made the right decision by making room for them in the garage rather than letting them rust out in the backyard so that the next time you need them they are all nice and rusted.....Not a hard one to figure. Besides that if the bikes you have will rust by being left outside then you might want to consider an upgrade since only low end bikes tend to have parts that can rust in the first place. Put them in the garage or spend more money anyway!
Anything you use to cover them outside to keep rain off will capture condensation underneath at night which will defeat the whole purpose of covering them in the first place and will lead to rust- dont believe me? Go right ahead and do it and I will know you did when you come back and ask if it is ok to use WD 40 to clean a rusty chain later on.....

Any tourism attractions on my way from Washington DC to Myrtle Beach?

HOPE, BEL

Hi, I am going to drive from Washington DC to Myrtle beach, SC. I am traveling with my wife and 2 kids. I want to stop on the half way, South Virginia or North Carolina for a day or two. I am looking for a great travel destination on my way, that can make my family vacation even more memorable. I enjoy mountains, lakes, caves, and etc. Any suggestions

Answer
Maybe take a stop in Richmond? It's right on your route down to Myrtle Beach on Interstate 95.

Outdoors and Sports
Historic Sites
Wineries & Breweries
Museums
Theme Parks & Zoos
Shopping
Caverns
Arts & Performances
Exhibits
Golfing
Cultural Heritage
State Parks
Dining
Spas
National Parks

Here's a link for everything to do in Richmond + surrounding areas: http://www.virginia.org/

It's not quite half way only about 70 miles south of D.C. infact.

Another Place you could stop at is Lake Gaston. It's right at the border of Virginia and NC and is right next Interstate 95. Quick and easy stop for a little.

Here's a link to Lake Gatson: http://www.lakegastonchamber.com/

Or take a stop in Croatan National Forest, it's a little out of your way and not on Interstate 95 but it will be a great destination. It is right next to the Atlantic Ocean and is one of the biggest National Forests in NC. Infact it's 160,000 acres.

In Croatan National Forest there is-

Bicycling
Camping & Cabins
Climbing
Fishing
Hiking
Horse Riding & Camping
Hunting
Nature Viewing
OHV Riding & Camping
Outdoor Learning
Picnicking
Scenic Driving
Water Activities

Here's a link to their website: http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c4/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gjAwhwtDDw9_AI8zPwhQoY6BdkOyoCAPkATlA!/?ss=110811&navtype=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&cid=FSE_003853&navid=091000000000000&pnavid=null&position=BROWSEBYSUBJECT&ttype=main&pname=National Forests in North Carolina- Home

The Croatan National Forest is about 100 miles north of Myrtle Beach. If you go there you can just drive down route 17 and you'll be in Myrtle Beach in a few hours.

I hope you have a fun trip and I hope I helped. If you have any more questions feel free to message me.

Is there an infant seat system for bike trailers?

kids bike 5 year old
 on Wednesday, September 7, 2011
kids bike 5 year old image

Arwen

Years ago we sold our car to get a slower lifestyle in our suburban town, and for 10 years we lived by bike and bus. We used the bike for short trips and for going places the bus didn't go. At the time the bus service didn't run on Sundays or holidays, so if we wanted to go anywhere, we had to take the bikes.

At the time we had three children - age 7, 4.5 and a newborn. The 7 year old rode his own bike, the 4.5 year old rode behind his dad on a trail-a-bike, and we jury-rigged an old infant seat into a bike trailer for the infant. I also carried all our groceries in that trailer, and once, a door (without the baby!). Eventually they all rode their own bikes, but it started this way.

My brother's wife is about to have a kid, and I want to give them a bike trailer to go riding with their new baby.

Has anyone invented/marketed a better system for infants in bike trailers? If so, what bike trailer does it work with, and where can I get it?

Answer
Most bike systems are designed for babies 9 months and over. It's an issue of being able to hold their heads up enough to prevent the sort of jostling that biking creates. Even a carseat in a bike trailer, isn't secure enough to hold them steady, especially not in the case of a spill or accident. I also wanted something for our five month old to use with our bikes in the spring, but no such luck. Now she's 16 months, and we've gotten her a bike seat.

I think maybe just buy them a bike trailer and let them decide what they are going to do to. It might've been a risk you and your husband were willing to take, but each parent should decide for themselves.

Good luck!

Has anyone yet designed an infant seat for bike trailers?

Answer
@Old hippie, the infant car seat could be secured to the bike trailer and have it rear facing. In the car, it needs to be reclined no more than 45 degrees, but a parent could recline it more than this on a bike trailer to keep their newborns airway open and to prevent their child's head to their chest (especially going uphill)- more at 60 and 80 degrees from vertical on a bike. Remember that if the seat is installed in the car, it needs to be no more than 45 degrees.

This is because they aren't going to use the seat to withstand crash forces- just to secure the child for the ride.

Here is an article about the American Academy of Pediatric policy regarding bike trailers. They recommend that, "...adults should carry only children 12 months or older and weighing less than 40 pounds."

These are just recommendations and a parent can take what they want from what the AAP says. Because I don't agree with all policy decisions by the AAP.

Instead of having the child ride in the back with a jury-rigged infant car seat why not wear the baby with a wrap? There is the Moby Wrap or the Ergo carrier.

*Sigh* Many people haven't lived or visited Cambodia. You would never know how people ride on motorcyles and their bikes with their infants. That being said, I'm not sure if it is safe though. I just haven't heard about children dying in bike trailers.

Here is an article about why bike trailers may not be as dangerous as people think: http://www.mnn.com/family/protection-safety/blogs/bike-trailers-child-safety-and-the-medias-fear-
agenda

Whoops! Forgot to put the AAP article in: http://aapnews.aappublications.org/content/30/7/18.6.full

Why all the thumbs down? I haven't ever heard of many children getting killed being hit by a vehicle in a bike trailer. In contrast, I have heard plenty of children getting killed while in a crash being *in* the vehicle. Statistics just don't lie.

I'm all for safety, but I just don't understand by these trailers are just deemed as so dangerous. What magically happens when a child is 12 months old? If the car seat can be tightly tied down in the trailer, I just don't see how that would be any different.

I'm in pretty good shape except for my stomach. 3 kids later I don't exactly have the abs I used to. What are some really good ab exercises for toning I could do to help tone my stomach? I already do 100 crunches a day. I do 25 at a time 4x a day. However, I'd love to know more exercises that help. Give me some ideas! What worked for you? Thanks!

Answer
Abs can be worked out every day because they have great recovery time. Do roughly 12-20 reps depending on strength and endurance levels. Do 3-5 sets of each exercise.

Crunches
Altenating crunches(elbow to opp knee)
Reverse crunches(knees to chest)
Flutter kicks(lie flat on back with legs fully extended and heels >6in. off floor, then corss one leg over the other and alternate)
Bicycle kicks
Hanging crunches(chin-up bar)
Hanging reverse crunches(chin-up bar)
side bends(hold weight in one hand, then use free hand to touch knee while standing straight up)
