Motocross equipment???? (and how to convince my parents)?

Sadie Lady

Okay so I already asked about motocross, (thank you for the info I got it was very helpful) . But now I have a little problem. I need to be able to convince my parents that I can do it and to let me. Also I would like an idea about where to get a bike and equipment, but it's gotta be CHEAP. I will probably be paying for things myself and I'm only 13. I need to know expenses and equipment thanks so much!! :) ((and where do get it cheap)) HOW TO CONVINCE PARENTS TOO PLEASE!!!!

Answer
Bike can be purchase used off of Ebay, Craigslist, Bikefinds and Cycletrader.

Most motorcycles, even if they are "kids" bikes will usually run you $500 to $1000. Anything under $500 is going to need work. If you look long and hard enough you can find one, but you better have cash in hand and be able to get to the guy who is selling it first.

You did not give your height and weight, so I do not know how big or small of a bike you would need, but here is an example of a bike for sale on Ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-PW80-2005-/320893430453?pt=US_motorcycles&hash=item4ab6bd2ab5
and another:

New and used gear can be purchased from the same places (Ebay, Craigslist, etc), plus yard sales, garage sales and flea markets.

I was able to pick up my daughter (2-years ago) a used 1991 Honda XR100 R for $300 (Craigslist). Used Bell full face helmet - $35.00 (Ebay). Used Ocelot motocross boots $15.00 (yard sale). Used HRP shoulder pads and chest protector $10.00 (yard sale). Goggles $10.00 (Ebay). Motocross racing pants with knee and hip pads $55.00 (Ebay). Racing jersey with elbow pads $25.00 (Ebay). Padded racing gloves $15.00 (Wal Mart padded mechanics gloves). So for a bike and all the gear it came to a grand total of $465 my daughter was up and running. I did have to purchase a new carb for the bike, which I got of Ebay for $47.00. So that brought the grand total up to $512.00.

You can get away a little cheaper if you don't purchase racing pants and a jersey. I originally bought her some soccer knee and shine pads for $10.00 at a garage sale that she used until we got her the racing pants. She would just put them on over her sweat pants. She also just used a sweatshirt to ride in instead of a jersey.

Minimum gear you will need will be a helmet (SNELL approved) and boots. Then when you get the money buy gloves and goggles.

Convincing your parents is difficult to say. My wife and myself were all for my daughter riding, so it wasn't hard for her at all. All she did was ask. It took me about 3 months to get everything for her to be up and riding. It is a fun and great sport. My daughter is 13 now (same age as you) and she loves it. She has crashed and hurt herself, but she still loves to ride. It is excellent exercise and most of all, it is fun. It is easier to convince people that have ridden before. I know of only one person who has ridden a motorcycle and did not like it....and I know a lot of people...lol.

Feel free to have your parents email my wife and / or me, we will be willing to answer any questions they may have.

Good luck

New York outlawing quick release bicycle wheels?

bikeworks

I have recently learned that the NY legislature is attempting to pass a law disallowing the sale of ANY bicycles with quick release front wheels.

I am not kidding.

So, if you value the ability you gain with having quick releases and you live in New York CALL YOUR LAWMAKER NOW. It seems to have already passed part of the legislature.
Jay and Chad.. I wish I could give you further info. I came across this jewel while interviewing for a Product Manager position at a NY based bicycle company... not a retailer, but a brand name product supplier.

I was aware of the NJ bill which is equally crap, but the NY take is that ALL quick releases must go.
CM.. thanks for the input. The general feeling in the supply side of the bike industry is that if this bill is passed the next inevitable step will be taken.

Answer
I don't know about New York, but New Jersey is debating a law that bans the use of quick-release skewers on child bikes and bikes with wheels smaller than 20 inches.

Quote: It shall be an unlawful practice for any person to sell a bicycle intended for use by children with a front wheel diameter of 20 inches or less, which is equipped with a quick release wheel , exclusive of specialty adult bicycles.

While there may be other issues about this bill, it is NOT about banning QR skewers all together.
