I am looking for a mail-order source for Kids Trek MT-16 bike. I have seen sites that sell it for as low as $169 but none will ship and the local guys have obscene pricing.
Answer
If you see a site selling a Trek it is not a Trek dealer. You are probably looking at a used bike or someone reselling a new bike.
Most communities have a couple of Trek stores, if not it's hard to go 50 miles between them. Cross shop them and don't be shy that you are looking for the better deal. The need the sales right now. Also you really should build a relationship with a bike shop if you are looking for that quality of bike. Most Trek stores, no matter the discount you talk them into, will offer lifetime adjustments on the bike and some give free flat repair. Even a first bike needs attention sometimes.

Amount to spend on a bike?

I plan to buy a bike. I intend to use it for fun and exercise. I know I want a mountain bike and found the one I like. My only thing is whether I should spend this much on a bike. I know that bikes can be a lot more expensive. Growing up we always had bikes that cost $100 to $200 dollars at most. I get it was a kids bike and you don`t want to spend a lot on those because kids are hard on bikes a tear them up. The bike I want is $430 dollars and I have never spent that on a bike. I understand that the more you spend the better the quality. What do you think? The link to the bike is here http://www.schwinnbikes.com/bikes/mountain/frontier-expert-9690#/highlights

Hey Pastcars,
You would probably be shocked by how much you *can* spend on a bicycle these days. Personally? I have 3 bicycles in my "stable" A single speed for riding around San Francisco (not as hard as you might think) and on The Playa at Burning Man. I paid $200 for that particular bike. I also have a Bianchi Milano I paid $750 for and I also have a Jamis Aurora that's a dedicated touring bike. With all the racks bags and all the goodies? It totals out to around $2000-$2500. I will admit to being a bit of a "bike snob" but I've also worked in the industry for a number of years.
One thing I can tell you is this... Most bikes in a given price range are going to be really close in value. The thing you really should be shopping for is a good bike shop. Here are some things to look for:
GET THE RIGHT SIZED BIKE! Be sure and LISTEN to the suggestions made by staff about what sized bike is best for the type of riding you'll be doing. There is nothing worse then having a bike that's either too big or too small. Don't be stubborn and think that "bigger is better" or that you'll know exactly what size frame is best for you, that's where experience and knowledgeable staff come in.
Do the shop offer service with the sale? Most shops will tune a new bike after 3-6 months for free. More is better.
Is the staff *knowledgeable* and helpful? or are they just trying to sell you something? Do they ask you questions about how you plan to use the bike?
Do they have a wide selection?
Do they make suggestions that include bikes at, above and below the price range you're looking at?
Are you greeted when you enter the store or are you left to wander without any assistance for hours on end?
Do they give "attitude" as soon as you walk in the door? Like it's beneath them to educate you about bikes?
Do they offer to fit the bike to you according to how you plan on using it?
Did you actually enjoy the experience going into the shop or was it all negative?
