Traveling to canada by foot.?

Willow

I dislike where Im currently living, and who I'm living with. I've been wanting to travel the world for quite a while now, with my first stop being Canada. Honestly, I'd like to live there permanently, then once having a job long enough, I'd like to continue with traveling. I don't have a lot of money and am currently unemployed. I'd actually like to try to get to Canada by foot or by bicycle. Im currently residing in New York at the moment. I'm aware of two online networks known as couchsurfing and wwoof. I want to know if anyone used these networks before, how long it would take to get to Canada from New York by foot or bike, if the trip is even possible, and any possible tips to keep me safe and keep me going until I get there. Anyone who has ever traveled by foot before, your help would be greatly appreciated. Im only looking for help, so if your going to insult me and/or call me names please just keep you comments to yourselves.

Answer
It is about 410 miles from New York city to the closest Canadian border point (Niagara Falls) by road.

As an American citizens, you need a valid US passport to visit Canada. That only allows you to stay for 90 days and does not permit you to work in the country. If you want to visit for more than 90 days, you need to apply for a visitors visa at the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate. In addition, Immigration Canada may ask questions like where you are staying, proof you have sufficient funds to remain in the country, proof of medical insurance, etc. if they suspect you don't have money. The fact you are riding a bicycle -- rather than a car, bus, train, or plane will probably trigger the questions.

If you want to temporarily work in Canada, you must first receive an offer of employment from a Canadian company in a specific field and then apply for a work visa. You need to submit financial statements, proof of medical insurance, etc.

In order to stay in Canada permanently you need to apply as an immigrant. If you have direct relatives in Canada (parent, children, spouse, etc.) they can apply under the family section. Otherwise, you need to apply as a skilled worker (with a degree, job experience, etc.), an investor (willing to start a business in Canada worth $300k or more), or as provincial nominee (a teacher willing to work in the north, a famous artist, etc.). You need to submit your passport number, medical records, background checks, financial statements, English or French proficiency tests, etc. You compete on a point based system including work experience, age, knowledge of Canada, if you've visited or lived in the country previously, if you have friends, etc. Of the 2 to 3 million applications each year, approximately 20,000 people are allowed in. The process can take up to six years.
