Why did kids/teens in the olden days spend so much time either playing outside or reading?

like all they did was ride bikes go hiking climb trees play sports (ugh think how dirty and sweaty they got!)

they swam in the sea (ugh! how knows what was in that water!)

and they always read books (ugh boring)

why didn't they go shopping? im sure theere were clothes stores back in the 40s. 50s 60s 70s 80s and 90s!

Answer
No videogames back then. I can't imagine how sucky that would be :)
And they probably didn't have any money to shop either.

When did harley davidson become a status symbol?

This has been going on for a while but why are so many suburban yuppies riding Harleys!? Squeaky clean leathers and dude rags with collage logos trying to look like a mean sob's.

Answer
Don't forget to include BMWs because they too have a long history of being status symbols as well, especially in the 1960s to early 1980s. In the 60s and 70s, HD and BMW were both aimed at the touring/non-sporting market, but were at opposite ends of the spectrum. BMWs were light, extremely reliable, they handled decently, the boxer engine was a 50+ year old design but they lacked serious horsepower and speed. HDs, especially the dressers, were heavy, very unreliable, poor handlers, the V twin engine was a 60+ year old design and they too lacked horsepower and speed.

The people that rode both makes were also at opposite ends of the spectrum. Many HD riders tended to be the rough and tumble tough guys, which makes since considering the poor ride quality their bikes had and the mechanical abilities the riders needed to keep their bikes going. The only mechanics that could hold a candle to them were the Brit bike riders, whose bikes were always experiencing electrical failures, especially at night when the lights would go out. BMW riders tended to be the more sharp dressed guys, which I guess makes sense considering Beemers were shaft drive and didn't leak oil. A HD or Brit bike would have left their close oil soaked. I rode a Japanese bike back then and many of the BMW riders I met were snobby (I heard the same thing from other Japanese bike riders as well). Apparently they knew their bike cost twice as much as my bike did.

The old joke back then was that you could tell how reliable a bike was by looking at the factory supplied tool kit. BMWs were the most relaible and had a very complete tool kit, Japanese bikes were fairly dependable and had so-so tool kits, Brit bikes were very unreliable and had poor tool kits and HDs were extremely unreliable and didn't even come with a tool kit.

One thing BMWs and HDs had in common was that they both cost more much more than the British or Japanese competition, which put both into a more monetary elite class, thus making them consider their bikes to be a status symbol. Today, look at how many BMW car drivers tend to turn up their noses at non-German autos, excepting the Volkswagen. Some things never end. Something HD has that most other bike builders wish they had is name recognition. Ask any grade schooler or non-riding adult to name a motorcycle brand and they will tell you "Harley". Same thing with farm equipment, as a kid or urbanite to name a tractor brand and they will answer "John Deere."
