What changes after school gets out for the summer?

Do you notice more kids in the neighborhood than through the week? Nothing here like when I was a kid. No kids in the parks during the daytime, riding their bikes up and down the streets, playing in the sprinklers, running down to a little store to get a Coke or something their mother was out of. I have seen some going early in the day to the grocery stores or right before dark. We played outside most of the day unless we were doing chores or running errands. About the only difference is more kids are in the stores and malls, some running wild and others with their mother.

I have to push my 11 year old grandson outdoors, when he is not on the computer he is playing up stairs on his video games or psp. There are no children close by as we live way out in the country. He is a tv watcher too. We have a park with a public pool that I take him to so he can be with other children every Saturday in the summer. We also have a place at the beach we love to go too. Being an only child can have a lot of drawbacks, but we try to make it easy for him to be with children when school is out. Poppy

Is it just me, but is the number of people able to ride a bike decreasing?

I bunch of my classmates said that there parents never taught them how to ride a bike because it's to "dangerous". I respect parents decision but I am look down upon because I am doing a dangerous activity. Is there anything wrong with riding a bike?
Also is it true America is getting fatter?
Because I barely see anyone at the park anymore. Not even little kids. But I do hear people playing video games at night with the sound turned on REALLY loud.
Some people have seen ride bikes, but not many kids in my area.

Answer
The number of kids riding bicycles may be down. But the number of people commuting by bicycle is up about 20% in the past few years in the USA.

I agree with what you're saying though - and for at least two reasons. 1) Parents don't trust their own neighborhood or over-protect the child. There's a lot of weirdos out in the world today. 2) The allure of video games & TV keeps kids away from riding a bicycle. 3) And the one I get most upset over...parents are too damn lazy to spend any quality time with their own child & teach them the proper way to ride a bicycle & do so safely!!!

Pardon me while I air out some dirty laundry. My "ex" wife being guilty of #3. Because my kid had/has Asperger's Syndrome (a form of autism) she felt he (our son) would NEVER be able to do anything more than ride around the block on the sidewalk. I proved her wrong. End of rant.
