i live in texas and i am beginning to race. i would like a powerful bike but i don't know what type of bike or engine i should get and how old i have to be to race it. i am 14 and i am 5 foot 10 inches (about). HELP PLEASE!!

Answer
You fit the age requirements for America but you are really too tall to race that bike. Your knees will be up under the bars.
The country I am in kids can race the small wheel version of the crf150r from 9 years of age and then they move to the big wheel version and can race that till they turn 16. In America you cannot race the crf150r till 12 years and some kids have to move on by 14 as they are too tall for it. Like you are. You would do better with the crf250r and you can race that at 14.

Here is a link to the rule book for the ama and you can look up any information you need

Wow all I can say is if you have to weigh 65kilos to race a crf150r in america then a load of people would not race at all. I have a 55 kilo son who races pro lites nationally on a crf250r so I think I would re check your rules on that and he also races national supercross on the same bike. He still would not be allowed to race a crf150r by your ruling. There is also no mention of this in the ama rule book.

Why is it so hard to find a 14-Inch bike for my son?

My son is 3 1/2 and sat on a 12-Inch bike yesterday. He rode it great but his knees already came up high so I was thinking he needed a 14-Inch bike but they are hard to find. 12 and 16-Inch are common but why no 14-Inch? I think a 16-Inch would be too big but the 12" look small. Any suggestions?
If 14" bikes aren't made, would a 16" bike be okay or should he be on a too small 12"?
I saw one 14" bike at Toys R Us and none, anywhere else.

Answer
The standard 12, 16, 20, 24 etc. exists because the 4" gap is considered small enough to accommodate all riders. Kids bikes are one size frame (in general - but there are size differences) At 3 1/2 I would think a 12" wheeled bike would work. Was the seat all the way down when he rode it? If so you can simply raise the seat - you'll need to do this a couple times a year to keep up with his growth. Usually, by the time the seat is as high as it can go, the next size with the seat set low will work. Because kids grow so fast the in-between sizes really aren't needed.

Unless your boy is very big for his age, I'm sure a 12" would be fine with the seat adjusted. He'll out grow it but kids bikes are so cheap it's usually not a cash issue. If you can't afford it, buy a used one at a garage sale etc. Also, friends, neighbors and family are usually looking to give old ones away, like you'll be doing in a few years. And if indeed a 16" is really in order check it out on him at the store. If he won't be riding until spring then maybe a 16" will fit in 6 months.

Be sure to check his bike out over the year. My kids are the only ones in the neighborhood with the seats adjusted right, tires pumped up, chain lubed and brakes in good working order.

I'm very attentive to my kid's bikes as I'm really into cycling. My 2 daughters have progressed fine from 12" to 16" to 24" now... and I'm a picky dad when it comes to bikes. The sizes worked fine.
