My kids used to carry a can of cheap hairspray when they walked or bicycled.. they only needed to spray the air about knee high, and all dogs backed off..soon they quit even bothering to come out and bark..

I have already asked some questions about bicycles but have much more to learn.
I intend to buy my first-ever bike as soon as I can. I am an "older person" and did not learn to ride a bike when I was a child though I did get some very very very basic beginners lessons in my mid 20s.
I want something lightweight. I am not a very tall person so I need something for a person who is 5 foot three inches but has slightly shorter legs than the average person my height. Usually only kid's bikes are designed for someone my size, and kid's bikes have tacky designs in other ways. It is hard to find a mountain bike that weighs no more than 26 pounds. In fact I think they don't exist. I would like a bike with more than one gear but some of the ones I like best have only one gear. Am I right to believe that "gears" refer to the apparatus that can enable you to ride inclines and hills rather than only on flat surfaces? I have my eye on a certain folding bike but though it is compact ( which I like) and light ( which I like) and it fits me very well ( which I like) it has no hand breaks and is only one gear.
Information please, and remember I am not familiar with a lot of bike terminology so be specific.

Go to your local bike shop and ask to see a light weight hybrid bike. The one they would fit you with probably has a 15" frame size. A 21 or 24 speed bike will have some low gears for climbing steep hills.
