I have a 5 year old son that is not afraid of anything! He is ADHD but is medicated, yet he still does things that endanger his life almost daily! How can I instill some fear in him or get him to understand the dangers of his actions. We have talked to him until we're blue in the face and we obviously are not saying anything to affect him. HELP!
Answer
The following should help.
1. Reevaluate his medication. It might be an idea to keep a diary of the times he does these things, is it happening after the meds have started to wear off? Does he metabolize the meds faster than the average child? Do the meds have enough of a positive effect? They may not be strong enough or not working well.
2. Enroll him in gymnastics classes. This is the perfect environment for a fearless child. parents may worry that it would make them more dangerous but in gymnastics kids are taught how to fall and crash safely in a way they do it naturally without thinking. Often the problem with an ADHD boy is they need to constantly test their body and see what it will do, doing this at gymnastics in a safe environment will reduce the need for it in your house or backyard.
3. Check his diet. The problem with ADHD is a lack of chemical/electrical activity in one part of the childs brain. There are many foods that further destroy these chemicals. Avoid food with colors, flavors, preservatives and flavor enhancers. Be very wary of seemingly healthy foods. Often the preservative in bread causes scary behavior.
4. Get him involved in more exercise and sports. A child with ADHD needs to play sport a lot more than an average child. An ADHD child should be doing at least 30 minutes of vigorous exercise every single day like running, bike riding, swimming, playing ball sports and so on and should be doing organized sport at least 2-3 times per week. kids with ADHD find that if they play enough sport they have better control of their impulsivity and hyperactivity.
5. Make sure he has a firm and consistent consequence every time he does something dangerous. The consequence needs to be exactly the same every time he does something dangerous so it becomes almost ingrained into his conscious.
6. Continually remind him of the dangers of what he is doing, He may seem like he is not listening but eventually it will sink in.
