Q. My family has been looking for another dog and we already have a golden.We were interested in the German Shepherds.We would like to know if they are good pets and if they're good with children/other dogs.The kids are 13 and 9.

German Shepherds are great dogs in the right hands. This is not a breed for everyone. Care should be taken in choosing a breeder because some can have serious health, nerve and temperament problems. Early socialization is a must to develop a stable, confident temperament, they are easily trained, aloof by nature and can be very territorial.
If you simply want a pet for your family, and don't have the time or inclination to take your dog running or hiking or biking or swimming, or to get involved in agility (obstacle course), or advanced obedience, or schutzhund (protection), or herding, or tracking, or a similar canine activity, I do not recommend this breed.
A German Shepherd may be right for you if you want a dog that is:
Is strong, athletic, and natural-looking
Thrives on challenging activities and exercise
Looks stern and imposing, so makes an effective deterrent
Is exceptionally versatile -- when well-trained, can learn and do almost anything
A German Shepherd may not be right for you if you do not want to deal with:
An extremely careful search to avoid all the bad-tempered and unhealthy German Shepherds
Vigorous exercise requirements
Rowdiness and exuberant jumping, especially when young
Destructiveness when bored or not exercised enough
Aggression or shyness toward people in some lines, or when not socialized enough
Aggression toward other animals
Chasing and nipping at things that move: children, joggers, other animals, bikes, cars
Constant heavy shedding
Legal liabilities (public perception, future breed bans, insurance problems, increased chance of lawsuits)
A multitude of serious health problems

What are some fun activities you do with your toddlers or preschoolers?

I'm looking for some new activities for my 2.5 year old. We have made clay and bubble mix and have done the whole spray bottle paint on a white sheet deal and made hand print butterflies and elephants..... what are some fun interacive crafts or activities you do with your kids?

Nature hunt. Find acorns, different shaped leaves, pine cones, flowers, etc. Count the different kinds of wildlife you see.
Parade. Make instruments and get dressed up and parade down the sidewalk. Even better if you can get some neighbors to come out and cheer and other kids to participate by decorating wagons and bikes and big wheels.
Homemade salt playdough.
Freeze water in 9x13 pans. Before the water goes in drop some food coloring in and see what happens when it freezes. We did this a lot this winter.
Make obstacle courses to run through - you run them too! Things to climb over, under, around and through.
Find out what free/cheap concerts are available. Many high schools and colleges have band, dance, orchestra concerts that are open to the public. Groups like military bands often play in parks for free.
Picnic. Pack up easy lunches and a blanket and go have lunch out at a park or even in the back yard.
Find your local children's museum. Even better if it's rinkydink and hands on. 2.5 year olds don't need to have the fancy stuff, but I know my son loved petting turtles and using the thousands of blocks (he didn't have nearly as much at home), playing dress up, playing make believe, and creating art projects.
Cook together. Little kids can add ingredients, stir, put fork prints in cookies.
Help around the house. Seriously? My son used to (and still does) love helping me around the house. From putting wet clothes into the dryer to digging in the garden to being "tool boy" when I was fixing the car...it was great fun for him.
