kids bike chart image

My kids are not eating much. I include them in meal planning and preparation, but they would rather just be outside running, playing or riding bikes.
We just try to offer healthy stuff they like and have family meal times, but they don't want to eat much. We don't force them to eat and they are losing a little (less than 4 pounds) weight. Is this normal?
Answer
im certain its their age. kids change their minds everyday about what they like and dislike.taste. texutres.... so much to choose from. not to mention... they find themselves going through so many different changes! weather they are an active tiny two year old to a pre- teen. children who tend to be active surely can fluxuate in pounds.
i just wouldn't allow them to junk foods all day or completely rule the dinner chart.its great that you include them @ this point. its so positive that its a family issue. families that eat together @ the table for meals, have shown to have the greatest positive effect in school as well.
just a little bit of home bonding makes such a large impact.
with 1/3 of the population being heavy weights, you should be happy that they aren't over weight.
just as well, the body immage to be so skinny these days is a harmful factor as well.
as long as you stress to them that both healthy eatting and physical activity are key to a great appearance... i think you are doing fantastic!

What are some fun educational activities for kids to teach them about wellness?
Aaron
I currently work at a summer camp with elementary students and I have to make some activities for the students since the main instructor is back at his original job. The theme for this week is wellness. I have made some activities, but I want to see if there is anybody who can help me with some other ideas.
Answer
Hi there! sounds like a fun week, hope I can help you out! I am just going to rattle some ideas out...(hope that is ok...)
- reading/cooking..perhaps you can make some fun nutritional snacks like smoothies, applesauce
and yogurt parfaits
- math-menu activities-get some of the menus and nutritional facts from McD's, Burger King,
Subway,Taco Bell etc and have groups of students try to figure out the kids meal that has the fewest
calories, or fewest carbs etc. (students will need scrap paper and/or calculators) You could also
have groups calculate the worst choice, then discuss the difference.
-physical- maybe have a fitness day that teaches and experiences a variety of exercise options
(zumba, yoga, swimming, cardio, muscle-building activities. YouTube is great a showing routines
etc.
-physical-go swimming, and rather than just splashing around, actually see if a fitness director can do
aqua zumba with the kids...its a lot of fun!
-listening-see if your community DARE Officer is available to come in and speak with the kids
-physical-have a bike day, when students come to camp with their bikes, and participate in safety
lessons, and challenge courses...or a long ride...
-writing/introspective-students have about a month left of summer...maybe you can do a goal setting
activity with them, where they set a wellness goal for themselves for the summer. you can help them create a chart to show progress on their goal (to display at home in their rooms)...ex. goal=drink 6 glasses of water a day, or...play outside 60 minutes a day, or avoid caffeine for the rest of the summer..etc..
-artsy-students can create posters or fridge magnets based on the wellness theme
I hope some of these help~ have a great time!
